#4 15. gezici festival isbirligi ile nisi masa türkiye tarafından hazırlanan bagımsız gazete an independent gazette prepared by nisi masa turkey in collaboration with the 15th festival on wheels nisimazine 14 aralık 2009 artvin f ilm of the day here burada TZU NYEN HO g ü nü n filmi interview r ö p o r ta j Yarışma filmlerinden Bay Kim’in Avare Günleri’nin yönetmeni ve yapımcısı ile teknolojinin her türlü imkanını kullanarak görüştük. We interviewed the director and producer of the competition film Castaway on the Moon, by benefiting from all opportunities of technology. He Zhiyuan karısını öldürür ve konuşmayı keser. _lale seyda gülsoy Through tragic and funny circumstances of your characters, could we say that you are criticising modern life? The guy lives on the island and there is nothing. But outside, there is a life going on with crowds, cars, food and problems. Since the island is located in the city, he can still witness the life he is not involved in. We think there is an irony here and wanted to talk about this and the modern life in general. What do you think about Artvin and Festival on Wheels? When we first heard about the festival, we did not quite understand why it is moving from one city to another. But now we fully understand why it moves. The festival is based on a very interesting idea; constantly changing places! It is a small one but has everything that should be in a festival. p ic tu r e o f t he day günün fot oğrafı It should sound good in theory. But at this point, the film quotes Nietzsche; it mentions the concept of amor fati, explaining the greatness of consenting with one’s fate (which it defines as the has-beenlived and will-be-lived) and leaving things as they are. It emphasizes that the construction of any alternative to an end is ultimately useless as a method of therapy since the end can never be repeated; and displays that the madman’s abnormal practices in his environment are making him an individual. Behind the reckless usage of the word “madmen” all through this article lies a meaning that political correctness should never conceal. After all, there’s only a thin line in between: being Here only means not being ‘there’. The belief that madmen are curable pathologic cases is a product of modern times. The doctors in the film have videocuring as a method, which involves filming the realization of an ‘alternative’ end by the patient himself to the initial incident that placed him in the institution. The screening of these videos becomes a social event: The madmen watch each other’s process of normalization as in a show; they cheer, applause and get encouraged. Artvin ve Gezici Festival’i nasıl buldunuz? Düşünceleriniz nelerdir? We are used to seeing the isolation of human through the mediation of 'the lonely person among the crowd' myth. Why did you choose just the opposite; an island story? As you can see in the film, there is a real island in the centre of the city which is a preserved area for protecting the birds. Nobody lives there. One day, the director passes there by car and imagines a person living there but nobody knows about him. There is another person, a girl watching him. She lives in an apartment near by the river and watches him through her window. Their isolation is very similar: one is on the island and the other is in her room. _m. murat kocaaga Teoride her şey güzel görünüyor. He Zhiyuan kills his wife and quits talking. Instead of prison, he is placed in a mental institution where most of the other patients are also sent due to their criminal records. They spend time making friends, falling in love and responding to the efforts of installing them back into society. A big portion of the mockumentary is presented as a recovery process including interviews with the patients. John Wayne Hated Horses is a blurred film. It is more likely to feel the whole picture rather than imagining it since the director Andrew Betzer made a film full of symbols and implications. While the images are silently flowing, a definite determination and grace accompany the inexpressible feeling of the film. review john wayne hated horses john wayne atlardan nefret ederdi k r it i k ANDREW WETZER The film softly deals with intricated problems which are obviously bigger than a conflict between a father and son. Therefore they are mostly hard to analyse. The indirect expression of the film suggests references to more than just one fact. Thus, the analysis of the film gladly conserves the possibility of an instant scatter away from the notions flashing in minds. For instance, while a beatiful, long haired boy is walking around the abondened tanks -with the information that militarism is identified with masculinity-, it is possible to see the barrels as phallic images. On the other hand, the sequence that we see the father coming out of the bathroom and punishing his son, probably reminds us conscientous objectors to the army whose heads were shaved making them bleed. To some of us, it surely does. cross-border operation of cinema Tüm sanat dallarında gerçeklik, ulaşılması imkansız bir yerde durur. For all the art forms, ‘reality’ is such an impossible ideal. Even for documentaries, the most direct method for transmitting reality in cinema, there is selection and arrangement: editing. Thus, documentary can only offer a reflection of reality. However, as its history solidified this image for good, it represents reality in our common cinematic subconscious. But still, this situation supplies an opportunity for film-makers. Both documentary and fiction benefited from each other in order to find a better place for themselves. In the program of the festival, three films from Turkey offer interesting examples of crossing the borders of documentary and fiction. Fiction through documentaries: Journey to the Moon, is a mockumentary about the tragicomic space adventure of an eastern village in Turkey. We see in the film how the tools of documentary filmmaking have a role in transmission of a fictious story. When the narrator -with his local accent- and experts’ claim come together, East’s story-telling tradition finds its contemporary form. We call it as ‘story-telling’, because the situation of the villagers who are desperately going after their dreams, shows the historical pains of Turkish modernism in an allegoric way. Documentary inside the fiction: In 10 to 11, Mithat Bey, the leading leading character, is real and plays himself. Even the events going around this extraordinary character are fictional, the existence of Mithat Bey’s ‘reality’ penetrates into every second of the film. Therefore, this film differentiates from other films based on real events/persons. But it makes the audience think “What would happen to the perception of the audience, if Mithat Bey hadn’t played himself?” Documentary through fiction: On the Way to School, the most talked about film of the year, does not claim to be just a documentary. However, it totally shows traces of the documentary aesthetics. Regarding its subject matter and narration, it is a kind of a synthesis between the fictious style of the documentary film Être et avoir (To Be and to Have) and the documentary feeling of the fiction film, Entre les murs (The Class). The film urges us to criticize our ideological stands, nationalistic views, and the state policies by depicting the experiences of the Turkish teacher who cannot speak Kurdish but teaches Kurdish children who cannot speak Turkish. These films show us that there are not strict boundaries between documentary and fiction. Because not only in cinema, but also in our daily life, we, the audience have to construct the reality and transmit it indirectly. While this obligation is so obvious, no genre has no genre has the right to occupy a consistent field to itself. _deniz akhan focus mercek _nisimazine artvin ekibi pelin aytemiz
