PROJECTS I AM INVOLVED
1) Friesian - Jersey Crossbred (FJXB) project. Conducted by Livestock Improvement
Corporation, Hamilton, New Zealand. (June 2001 - September 2003). Position involved:
Research Scientist. This project aims to identify genes (quantitative trait loci; QTL/gene),
which determine phenotypes in dairy cattle, and detect their location. In this project F2 design
is used. The F2 offspring were obtained from mating of New Zealand’s outbred HolsteinFriesian and Jersey dairy cattle populations.
2) Characterization of Drug-type Cannabis Genotypes via RAPD-PCR and Evaluation of
Statistical Methods in Use. (2005-2007). Supported by Selcuk University, Scientific Research
Institute Coordination. Position involved: Project leader. Aims of the project were: 1) to
identify relatedness of high number of seized Cannabis samples, provided by Istanbul forensic
department, by means of RAPD markers, 2) to evaluate statistical methods used in the
phylogenetic analyses of dominant genetic markers.
3) Sheep Genomics projects SG204, SG227, and SG-ITT. Conducted by ReproGen –
Advanced Technologies in Animal Genetics and Reproduction, Faculty of Veterinary Science,
University of Sydney, Camden NSW 2570, Australia. (August 2007-August2008). Position
involved: Research fellow. This projects aim to identify genes (quantitative trait loci; QTL),
which determine phenotypes in Merino sheep. Phenotypic data were available for QTL
analysis from Awasi  Merino, Indonesian thin tail sheep (ITT)  Merino, divergent lines of
Merino sheep matings in BC, F2 and daughter designs.
4) The Biometric Identification of the Cattle Breeds in Turkey by Planum Nasolabiale.
Conducted by Selcuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Funded by TUBITAK
(1109O331). (15.10.2009 - 15.10.2011). Aim of the project was to define reliable, improved
identification methods and tracking of animal with minimum error risk, resulting in
eradication of many diseases, the control of animal transportation, competitions. In addition,
easy solution for the disputes in judicial situations. 3000 cattle-species animals from seven
geographical districts in Turkey and from three cattle breeds (native, culture and crossbreed
and equal to each other as possible) were used. Photograph and prints of animals’s planum
nasolabiales were taken. The differences or resemblances of the shapes were shown
statistically according to the morphological methods and biometric-based computer analysis
methods to be applied on the pictures or prints of merme or nose part (P.N.), of the cattle.

5) Investigation of microRNA expression profile in relation to pregnancy in equine
endometrium. Conducted by Selcuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Funded by
TUBITAK (111O733). (15.03.2012 - 15.09.2013). The microRNAs (miRNA) are 22 nucleotide
molecules and are not translated into proteins, however, they play roles in the regulation of
gene expressions. Evaluation of uterine miRNA profile will help to understand the regulation
of posttranscriptional control of endometrial genes which direct the maternal recognition of
pregnancy in mares. In this project, the aim was to determine miRNA profile by microarray
technology in the biopsy samples of mare endometrium, which were collected in the
TUBITAK TOVAG 107O035 project. GeneChip miRNA 2.0 Array with 361 horse miRNA
have been used and then confirmation of real-time PCR analysis of selected miRNA with
significant differences, defined via various statistical approaches, is being performed. The
results are expected to add to the understanding of molecular mechanism of early pregnancy
and its maternal recognition in mares. Furthermore, the results may help in the development of
strategies to increase fertility and will surely introduce new information about miRNA into the
scientific literature. Position involved: Researcher.
6) Effect of Dietary Omega-3 Fatty Acid on Early Pregnancy in Ewes: Determination of
Endometrial Global microRNA Expression Profile. Conducted by Eskişehir Osmangazi
University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science. Funded by TUBITAK
(112R022). (15.04.2013 - 15.04.2015). In this study, it is aimed to determine dietary fatty

miRNA expression profiles by using microarray technology in endometrial tissue samples of
the sheep fed a ration flax seed oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids or carbohydrates during early
pregnancy or on the day 13 of the cycle Following the analysis of microarray statistically
significant expression profiles miRNA molecules will be verified with the Real-Time-PCR
analysis. The results of the project will allow the understanding of physiological process
responsible for mechanism of recognition and continuation of pregnancy the molecular level.
With the outcomes of the project it is expected to pave the way for improvement of the
parameters of fertility and embryonic loss reduction and development of potential therapeutic

7) Comparison of the migration of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from different tissues:
The effect of basic-Fibroblast Growth Factor (b-FGF; FGF2) and Stromal Cell Derived
Factor-1 (SDF-1) on the migration of cells. Conducted by Selcuk University Faculty of
Dentistry. Funded by TUBITAK (112S587). (15.04.2013 - 15.04.2015). Since due to their
accessibility, high growth capacity and multipotential, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold a
great promise for clinical applications of tissue regeneration. MSCs migration, proliferation
and synthesis of required extracellular matrix in the wound healing area are important cellular
events for regeneration. Therefore, the capacity and potentials of the MSCs isolated from
different tissue sources should be clarified in order to use in regenerative periodontal therapy.
The purpose of this project is to; a) compare migration potentials of the MSCs isolated from
human bone marrow, adipose and dental tissues including periodontal ligament and dental
pulp from molar and premolar teeth, pulp from deciduous teeth, b) check the effects of basicFibroblast Growth Factor (b-FGF) and Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1 (SDF-1) on the
migration potential of the MSCs, c) examine the effects of these factors on the mRNA
expression of the MSCs with genome-wide expression assay using microarray, d) find
candidate genes for migration of the MSCs, and e) confirm data obtained from microarray
experiments using Quantitative RT-PCR. Position involved: Researcher.
8) Determination of Non-affected Reference Gene(s) for Maize Grown Under Different
Boron Dosages. Supported by Selcuk University, Scientific Research Institute Coordination
(16.07.2013 – 16.07.2014). Reverse transcription–quantitative real time PCR (RT–qPCR) is a
widely used sensitive method in the gene expression technology. However, its success depends
on the reference gene that is used in the normalisation process of the target gene. This projects
aims to detect reference gene(s) to be used as house keeping gene(s) in RT–qPCR studies of
maize grown under different boron doses. Position involved: Project leader.
