1. Introduction
STUDYING IN IRELAND
For those wishing to meet and study with fellow international students from all over
the world, as well as make lasting friendships, with friendly locals, Ireland is the perfect
study abroad destination. It was voted by Lonely Planet as the world’s friendliest
country in 2008 and 2010.
Students experience Ireland’s rich cultural heritage and enjoy exploring its beautiful
ancient landscapes. Many of Ireland’s writers such as Oscar Wilde and James Joyce
are household names throughout the world. Students have the opportunity to visit
world famous sites such as the Cliffs of Moher, the Blarney Stone and the prehistoric
passage tomb at Newgrange.
“Time spent as a student at
NUIM is very special. Both
highly collegiate and very
personal, you will find it
challenging and exciting”
Professor Philip Nolan
President, NUIM
Many of the world’s leading companies have chosen Ireland as the location for their
operations in Europe: Google, Facebook, Apple, Intel, Paypal, Microsoft, Twitter, Pfizer,
Cisco, Amazon.com, eBay, Dropbox, Oracle, Salesforce.com... The list goes on! This is
a direct reflection of the high standard of graduates that the Irish education system
consistently produces.
Frommer’s Guidebooks described Ireland as ‘a magical destination in nearly every
way’. They named it their ‘favourite holiday destination 2011’. It topped their global
poll because of its ‘spectacular landscape, history and opportunities to ramble and
explore’. Our hospitable nature coupled with an unrivalled sense of fun, ensures that
studying in Ireland is an unforgettable experience.
STUDYING & LIVING IN MAYNOOTH
Maynooth is Ireland’s only university town. It traces its historical significance back to
the 12th century and combines this legacy of medieval origins with its location in the
beautiful Irish countryside while being just 25 Kilometres west of the centre of Dublin,
Ireland’s capital city.
Today, it is a charming and busy town with many shops, cafes, public transport
options and general services. It is home to a vibrant local community that offers
students abundant opportunities for a very enjoyable social life. Maynooth has
excellent transport connections to Dublin city centre and the rest of Ireland, providing the ideal location from which students can explore the capital city as well as the
whole island of Ireland during their time here.
National University of Ireland Maynooth’s location gives it a unique character among
the Irish universities. This has resulted in the development of a strong sense of community both within the college and in its relationship with the surrounding area.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
Professor Philip Nolan
President, NUIM
In addition to the English language programme, a programme of cultural heritage, historical and sightseeing tours is arranged for students during the week. On weekends,
various tours for students allow them to travel and explore Ireland. Alternatively, some
students may choose to take advantage of the many low fares airlines that offer opportunities to explore some of Europe’s famous cities during weekends (London, Paris,
Rome, Prague, etc..).
The National University of Ireland Maynooth Summer Extensive English (SEE) Programme
offers students the opportunity of a lifetime. They will study in a beautiful institution with
a history of high quality education stretching back over 200 years. During the SEE Programme, students will have the opportunity to explore the amazing beauty of the
island of Ireland and also meet and make friends with both international students and
Irish people. All of this in the world’s friendliest country.
Students arrive in Ireland on Sunday, 6th July and are transferred from the airport to
the National University of Ireland Maynooth. Once they arrive, they are welcomed
and checked into their rooms on-campus. The formal welcome and orientation takes
place the following day. Students are tested to find out their current English proficiency
levels and are placed in classes accordingly. All levels of English ability are catered
for at the NUIM Language Centre*. Students start their English language programme,
which consists of 20 hours’ tuition per week (80 hours in total) immediately.
NOTE: *classes for absolute beginners are offered on request only.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH
With over 9,000 students from more than 90 countries, National University of Ireland
Maynooth is Ireland’s fastest growing university. National University of Ireland Maynooth is a University of contrasts. It has a tradition of academic excellence going back

National University of Ireland Maynooth in 1997, it is both Ireland’s youngest university
and Ireland’s second oldest university at the same time! This contrast is mirrored in the
National University of Ireland Maynooth’s two beautiful campuses. The South Campus,
an older complex of fine nineteenth century buildings, and the North Campus, a modern complex of teaching, research, accommodation and support facilities.
“The accommodation
was great. The apartments

TOTAL IMMERSION ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
The SEE Programme is designed to provide students with a complete English learning
experience through a comprehensive schedule of trips and activities. As Ireland is one
of the world’s safest and friendliest countries, it is the perfect destination for students
to totally immerse themselves in the English language. Activities and trips on the programme are designed to place students in situations where they are in direct contact
with native English speaking people, which gives them an excellent opportunity to
practise their communicative English. Throughout the programme, students will make
new and lasting friendships with other international students and native English speakers.
EXPERIENCE IRELAND’S CULTURE AND LEARN ABOUT ITS HISTORY.
During the SEE Programme, students continue to learn and encounter new experiences outside the classroom. The comprehensive schedule of cultural activities and excursions included in the programme ensure that students get a true taste of Irish culture.
Activities include:
• Irish national sports and cultural events.

CULTURAL EXCURSIONS
Glendalough
Glendalough is one of the most popular tourist sites in Ireland. St Kevin established a
monastery at Glendalough in the 6th century and it continued to flourish as a place of
pilgrimage and meditation for many centuries. The picturesque lake and surrounding
mountains combined with the ancient monastic ruins create a wonderful landscape
of great beauty and tranquillity.
Newgrange and the Boyne Valley
Newgrange is the finest Neolithic tomb in Ireland, located in the Boyne River valley.
The Boyne Valley is considered the cradle of Irish civilization. Newgrange, built over
5,000 years ago, is considered the most important ‘passage grave’ of the Irish Neolithic
period. The burial chamber is the world’s oldest solar observatory.
Optional Tours
There will be a range of optional tours for students to choose from on weekends so that
they can shape their own experience of Ireland.
