Ali Sami was a photographer, who graduated from the Imperial School of
Engineers. His photographs, whether family snapshots or official commissions, are
a mirror in which we see reflected the 19th century Ottoman Empire.
In Haluk Çobanoğlu's words: ''For Turkey arabesque means more than just being a
musical genre. At this stage we concur with philosopherAdorno who says 'every
music style represents the conflicts and tensions of the society in general'. To
peruse the subject from this angle, assuming music to be an uncensorable
sonorous historical heritage of a land, of a country, this photographical
documentary project has been an attempt after the arabesque music for nine years,
looking for the lost, and the lasting, and the changed.''
What I saw was affirmation of the image I had in my mind. Most of all, the
colour...The lake's fragile hue began to permeate my weary mind. The colour I'd
conjured in my imagination coincided exactly with the colour of the lake in
reality. What I was experiencing was the moment where the imaginary
synchronises with the real... At every step, I felt my feelings mellow, my spirits
lift...

COMMENTS
Othmar Pferschy was one of the first and most outstanding documentary
photographers of the period, traveling throughout the country taking thousands of
photographs. These years were a time when photography in Turkey was expected
to seek out what was beautiful, admirable and worthy in the country, recording
subjects such as relations between people and nature, archaeological sites, and
change and modernization in cities. Othmar's photographs are the finest examples
of this genre. His photographs capture meticulously timed moments, are
technically flawless and aesthetically brilliant.

This book has been prepared on the occasion of the exhibition ''Centre of Gravity''
held between 18 September 2005 – 8 January 2006 at the Istanbul Modern Art
Museum.
Taken by Erdal Yazıcı in Turkey's larger cities as well as a host of small towns,
villages and the countryside, the photographs in this book reflect the world of
children.
This book contains 51 photographs of Emine Ceylan, mostly consisting of human
portraits. According to Demir Özlü: ''When we look at Emine Ceylan's
photographs it is immediately obvious that there is no need for us to debate the
paradox between the local and universal. The figures she selects already bear the
most conspicuous characteristics of the local which is inherent within themselves,
but these figures do not remain static. Instead, by being drawn inside the wildest,
most deserted and loneliest landscapes, they rush towards an ultimate
metaphysical dimension. The skies and clouds in the background of many of these
photographs mark them with the heavy stamp of this metaphysical perception.
Emotion intensifies and then rereflects in the foreground, intensifying the image
still further. Since her photographs are images of life and death, the selected local
figure or type within the dimensions of the frame, together with the objects
around it, has no trouble accessing the universal, perhaps something even beyond
the universal: the situation of mankind in the world, the human being abandoned,
this ephemeral being, and its poetic helplessness in the presence of the natural
world; reaching what is a strange fragment of the cosmos, and will vanish in face
of its infinity and desolation.''

Maybe I should rephrase this and say that I was not documenting anything but I was
working on the image itself, I was really photographing, and that made me remember
the pleasure I felt when I worked in this way years ago. Times had changed; we are in
the communication era. I could share my whereabouts and my impressions of the
moment on the internet immediately. That day I was in a garden devastated by civil
war, 10 kilometers east of Beirut; 100 kilometers west of Damascus and I was cleaning
this garden. Later, I would place the objects that I had collected during my random
walks as a 'flaneur' in town on a hexagonal table in this garden. On certain place on the
map, from the series' ''News/Impressions'', the first photograph I shared was 'Hexagonal
Table in the Garden' (18.08.2008), after this photograph, I sent a new one every day by email to my acquaintances. I established certain rules for myself concerning the making
and sending of these photographs. These photographs would be taken during my trips
(not my vacations) no matter how many photos I had taken during one day, I would
choose only one, I would put a title, and it would be the impression of that given day. I
would not plan what I would photograph the next day. I would be loyal to the
impression of what that single day had brought. There were exceptions from time to
time. I had established the rules and I could break them. I believe this supple approach is
correct as in the sequence of the taking of the photographs. A friend claimed this
activity of mine as the prolongation of the popular movement, 'Mail Art' of the 70ties. I
do not oppose, but I prefer to keep "News/Impressions" outside of a social network.
From my point of view, I prefer to share them with my personal means that I established
throughout the years. I even received some sort of answers to my mails.
''News/Impressions'' can be read as where I am, what I am looking at, what I am
witnessing and in what kind of a mood I am observing my environment. In the
following pages I wish a happy journey to those who will find a place for themselves
among 51 samples of "News/Impressions" photographed and sent in the years 2008-2012.
I have to confess, when I was given the pictures (apologies for not saying
''photographs'', never warmed to this notion) if this book to ''look'', first thing I
thought of was a poem by Cemal Süreya, and the book of the same name, Göçebe,
where he says Istanbul's minarets are ''lyrical'' and its bridges are ''dialectic'' and
the crucial lines; ''You know, at whichever city I am / That is the capital of
loneliness''. Süreya differentiates ''city'' from ''capital'' which is actually the city of
Istanbul, where s/he becomes more lonely and plain. Just like the alienation,
residue, and exceptional expressiveness of migration that makes us think of tales,
awakens dreams, and burns like embers inside our bosoms which can also makes
us shiver as we watch the pictures. Well, maybe we can not see the sentences of
the poverty but as the words forming a lexicon, every possible, ''echo'' (each
''word'') reflects towards our gaze. Reflecting on the dialectic of the 'bridges' Cemal
Süreya mentions, just as Ece Ayhan says (Ece's name has to be mentioned,
otherwise cemal would be offended, I am sure) the ''arab'' (negative) of the picture,
is formed as the background.

İçkalpakçı Çıkmazı consists of photographs taken by Kemal Cengizkan and Dora
Günel in Samatya, İstanbul with the participation of the street's residents. All the
photographs in this book were taken in the street and its close surrounds, between
June 2000 and August 2002. The first exhibition, formed from these pictures, took
place on the wall in the street on September 28, 2002, after which photographs
were distributed to the "owners".

"At every stage of my work, it is 'sensation' which has priority rather than
'information'. These photographs are a reflection of life as I perceive it and do not
set out to mirror original realities. However, they do aim to reflect naturalness. By
focusing not on the extraordinary but the ordinary which is always within our
range of vision, on changeable simplicity, I hope to make contact with the essence
in the depths of life." These are the words of Emine Ceylan on her works in this
book. She continues: "I would like to hope that these obscure images which are the
outcome of long and laborious work will, like the flame of a torch, light up small
details in the lives of some people, reveal some small secrets, make a tiny
contribution to reinforcing their relations with nature and provoke them to stop
for a moment and think about the intrinsic essence of life. I have entitled this
album Climates, the name of a book which I love by André Maurois, because I
believe that people have 'climates' in the form of transient images just as nature
does."

What an ordinary eye sees and a photographer turns into an image differs
immensely. For example you wouldn't come accross the stinking Halic of yester
years in my imagery. Whereas some friends take photography as very attached to
its subject and say that "Photograph can't surpass its subject". Just like the men on
the street believes: pretty photos are taken from pretty scenes with pretty models.
However, many a filthy place, a junkyard dons the most beautiful photographs
while the beautiful scenes may not.
The 451 photographs included in this book are divided into 15 categories.

COMMENTS
In Kamil Fırat's Shore, apart from dead bird bodies lying in the shore, foam of the
waves, objects on the sand waves, stones, rocks and many details of the shore,
there is the "essence" of all these. Taking a walk on the shore doesn't only promise
a "silent whistle", like Hilmi Yavuz expresses in his foreword, there is also a
"philiosophical essence" in Kamil Fırat's Shore.
Beginning with paragraphs from Ece Temelkuran's book ''Senorita, We Are
Making a Revolution Here'', this book includes photographs of streets and people
of Cuba through the lens of Özcan Ağaoğlu.
'Cevdet Erek, is known as one of the main artists working with sound, space and
rhythm in Turkish contemporary art scene. The most significant themes seen in
his work appear as very controlled intervention (LESS), decisive use of emptiness
and voids (EMPTY), and a certain open-endedness (MAYBE). Form is extremely
important for Erek. He works with minimal interventions to suggest a certain
field/platform and a certain interface. Although he gives hints about his
inclinations he doesn't want to determine exactly where our journey will end.
Erek do not prefer to refer to his art as a completed, well-integrated art adventure:
he enjoys to emphasis the continuity of ambiguity and contingency. Obviously,
equipped with an awareness about sound, space and rhythm, Erek has been one of
the majör examples of a critical attitude to art in Turkey in 2000s. We hope Cevdet
Erek's genuine contribution to the art world will be more visible as a result of this
book.'' Süreyyya Evren

We have arrived Mardin on a hot day. We stood in front of the city. I looked
amazedly at the stone houses lining in front of the castle. I was in front of a city
completely different from all I have seen before. I fell into a strange feeling. I sat
on the stone wall near the road, I took out my tripod, placed my camera and
started to look at the city through the view finder. The sun almost set. The faces of
the stone houses looking towards the west were painted gold. It was as if my eyes
very painting on the canvas. There was a soft breeze. The leaves of the almond
tree in front of me rustled. Pigeons flew towards the city. Pigeons met the kites,
they wandered on the sky turning dark blue. The panaromic view in front of me
started talking. I started noting down the words of the city. What I have felt were
the first words of the city, I had to live, to talk with her. What I saw was the
personality of the city. I gazed vacantly as if looking at an invaluable painting of
the painter. I remained in front of the city till the lights were put on. When they
were on, the castle also put on her necklace. It was like a diamond necklace on the
neck of a beauty with fair skin. We were face to face. Just in front of each other.
The city was looking at me like a pair of eyes looking at her lover. I could feel she
had a lot to tell. I was wrapped by a magic I couldn't understand but could feel in
my heart. A magic which was impossible to erease. I had to go into the streets of
the city and listen to what was said. The city was going to talk. I loved her, she
loved me too. I felt the love. The magic wasn't ereased, the love either... I went on
visiting Mardin for five years. Sometimes in spring, sometimes in autumn, and
sometimes in the heat of the summer... I added my essays to my photographs. This
book was completed like that.
Introduced by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, this book contains photographic works of Emine
Ceylan between 1982-87.

SSS can be seen as an attempt to share a discovery. It explains in detail to the
reader how one can mimic the sea, how this can be done simply for oneself or
formally as a performance. The required state of mind for making the imitation is
treated with the same precision as technique and necessary equipment.
Humorously but without irony,Erek constructs a subjective guide by passing from
a contemplation on the imitation of nature, through a step-by-step manual to a
form of written music.

A boy in his teens, his school hat slightly askew, is looking through the window of
a small photo shop. Among the hand-coloured photos of happiness, portraits of
soldiers, hands propping up their chins so as to show off their wrist watches,
handsome young men, beautiful young girls posing carefully, and faded film
cartons, what he is examining is a tiny photo camera. The same boy, Şahin
Kaygun that is, will have his name in every avantgarde movement in Turkish
photography, influence young generations, produce unusual works which break
new ground , and will be the controversial subject of many discussions in the
future.
'We would, have prefered to present this 'In Memoriam' book to Şahin Kaygun
himself. Şahin Kaygun is one of our artists to have reached this universality... He
has added new dimensions to the style of photography. He has carried the
'Polaroid' to a new horizon. He has enriched its language. He has integrated it into
new possibilities of artistic creation. He has redefined the art of photography as a
phenomenon beyond the 'camera lucida'...
It is meaningless to begin the statement with a 'If he had lived...' because Kaygun
realized whatever he had to realize during his short life span. He himself would
probably not be content with that, but whatever he offered us is rich enough to
have him engraved in our memory without expecting more.'' – Fikri Sağlar

Right in the heart of Istanbul, a neighbourhood is being torn down! The streets
that make up the physical fabric of the neighbourhood, the buildings that give
colour to those streets, its houses, its workplaces, and the men, women, and
children who live there... a thousand and one more varieties of life are being
destroyed/annulled. Tarlabaşı being sacrificed in the name of ''gentrification''!
Tarlabaşı: A Defiled Istanbul District brings us face to face with this process in its
all vividness, a poignant rreality which is hardly aesthetic. Ali Öz, a veteran
photographer, practically lived in Tarlabaşı for two years. He has recorded the
''destruction/annulment'' process that the city and the neighbourhood have
suffered frame by frame. He has revealed on every corner the face of Tarlabaşı,
which has suddenly just been ''vaporised'' in the name of ''urban renewal'', street
after strret, step by step –from the Azerbaijani to the Pakistani and the African;
from those who saught refuge in Istanbul after the Bingöl earthquake to the
stuffed mussels sellers; from the coffee-houses to the beer-houses, bars, and cheap
night-clubs.

In his Terra Magica, master photographer Keribar, displays some of the
magnificent pictures he has taken on four continents - Europe, Africa, Asia and
North America - over the past 16 years. Keribar's pictures show overwhelming
desert scenes in North Africa, canyons in the American Southwest set against a
blue sky with billowing clouds, Buddhist monks wearing colorful robes in prayer
in Burmese temples, poor Pakistani men washing clothing by dirty streams,
bearded clerics, a black jazz trumpeter in New Orleans, an old gypsy violinist in
Istanbul. He is a master of composition and the use of light, color and contrast.

The Silk Road has played a tremendously important role in the history of
mankind. For centuries it was this road that linked east to west and served to
merge the economic, cultural and political traditions among the peoples living
along this long route. The Silk Road Project, retracing the ancient Silk Road with a
camel caravan, realized by partition of Arif Aşçı, Necat Nazaroğlu and Murat
Özbey lasted a full two years. As you'll read The Last Caravan on the Silk Road,
you'll see the close cultural relationships between the nations along this road and
recognize the tremendous role the Silk Road played in carrying and disseminating
man's cultural inheritance. The photographs by the famous photographer Arif
Aşçı, published in the book will shed light on our shared cultural inheritance and
they will carry our past to all coming generations in the future.

The past twelve years were my most productive years in creating photography
projects, one project followed another. I've spent all my free time and holidays on
photography. When I opened my exhibition "Autumn Roses" in September 2008,
my new project has already formed in my head. I've spent thirty three years of my
life working for this company however. I did not have any significant project
related to this environment. Although, I was the one who preached in various
photography seminars that "our lives" were the most essential source for
photography projects. Thus, I had to turn my lens towards my work environment.
The idea needs time to take a shape, you need to leave it to ferment. For about 6
months, I've put a lot of thought into this, shared the idea with my fellow
photographer and researcher friends. My excitement was growing by that time.
I've started looking for ways to commence this project, with whom and how; I
have talked to some of my work friends explaining what I am planning to do.
Finally I've come to an agreement with about twentyonepeople that I would spend
some time together in the following two years.
