“Taiping Tianguo, A History of Possible
Encounters” examines the real, concrete,
uncertain, and perhaps non-existent
connections between four artists who lived
in New York during the 1980s and early
1990s. The exhibition is taking place for
the ¿rst time in Beyoülu since its initial
exhibit in Hong Kong’s Para/Site Art
Space. It will be opened on May 8th, and
can be seen until August 11.

Archery has a special place in the history of many nations
both as a tool for hunting and as a sport. Our nation has
practiced this sport for centuries. Archery drills and contests
were very popular within the army. Many crucial Ottoman
victories like the battle of Manzikert and much of the

Why the name Tekke?
In the past, the word Tekke was not only used
for meeting places of religious orders, but
also for the training ranges used by military
sports. Two such places were known in

the conquest of the city, the name of

It is said that the victory celebrations
of the conquest was celebrated under

Some sources maintain that during

There is a large rectangular courtyard surrounded by a high wall in front
of a two story building that contained the main lodge and the sheikh room.
At the backside one can see a single, slender minaret. On the North side,
behind the atrium wall, is a single story structure with three entrances. A
few gravestones can be seen under the large cypress tree right next to it. It is

original minaret balconies were made out of lead and eventually changed to
stone, as we can tell from three photographs taken on a later date. Apparently

mainstream culture. We hope that with such a move as this not
only will we be able to encourage, support, and raise up athletes
of the future that gain both national and international success, but
also enhance the the image of our country abroad. The archery
range will play a major role in transmitting the centuries-long
inherited values required to raise spiritually and physically
healthy generations to come.
We are indebted to reviving archery for the sake of the history
of our people. We hope to regain some of the splendor of our
recorded history in this day and age where we are making the
voice of our country be heard on the world’s stage. The restoration
of the archery range has restored an institution which thrived for
centuries. Now, once again, it stands ready to make the masses fall
in love with the sport and transmit the virtues associated with it.

Prussian General Otto von Bismarck joined the German principalities in 1871 and
inaugurated the German Empire. After achieving national unity, the Germans began to
build enormous embassy buildings in the world’s major capitals as a sign of their new
grandeur. The first of these buildings, also known as the “Bird Palace,” currently is found
within the boundaries of the Beyoülu Municipality and serves as the Consulate General of
the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Mid-1860‘s...
During the time before the uni¿cation
of Germany, the ambassador of the
Kingdom of Prussia, Count St. Simon,
resided in Mahmut Pasha Mansion in
Galata, a space that is now occupied
by the Doüan Apartment building. The
decaying wooden mansion brought with
it endless headaches and the count was
forced to write a letter to Berlin. The
German authorities soon realized that
a wooden house with water dripping
from the ceiling was no place to be for
an ambassador of the German Empire
and they began to make plans to build a
new embassy. However the question still
remained unanswered: “Where?”
The Germans ¿rst sought a plot of land
at the Grand Rue de Pera, but were
unsuccessful.

After requesting help from the
Ottoman authorities, they were
recommend a few places around
the grounds of the cemetery by
Taksim Square. Then, architectengineer Hubert Göbbels came up
with the brilliant idea of building
the embassy outside of Pera in
the direction of Gümüýsuyu.
Subsequently, the German Empire
bought a plot of land overlooking
the Bosphorus for 95,000 Taler (a
German currency of the period).
A single condition was given by
the Ottomans before the exchange
of signatures; that the Germans
maintain the tomb of Ali Aüa found
within the purchased grounds. To
this day, the Germans do not neglect
to take care of the grave located in
the consulate gardens. Due to the
frequent change of circumstances
and requests, the building of the
embassy was delayed two years
until it began on April 21, 1874.

Goebbels died a few months later and
his deputy, Albert Kortüm, took over.
Kortüm remained faithful to Goebbel’s
original plan of erecting a building in the
classical style, but did modify one detail:
instead of the state coat of arms planned
for the four corners of building he placed
four eagles with their wings stretched
out. On December 1, 1877 the ¿rst
embassy building of the German Empire
was inaugurated by Prince Heinrich
VII. Due to its eagle motif, the building
quickly became known as the Palais
d’Oiseau (The Bird Palace).

German newspapers of the period
interpreted the eagles as the Empire’s
desire to make inroads into Europe and
Asia. After the German defeat in World
War I, the eagle ¿gures were removed,
and when the Republic of Turkey was
established in 1923 and Ankara was
declared the new capital, one by one all of
the foreign embassies began to relocate.
Since 1926, the Germans have continued
using the building in Beyoülu initially as
the Consulate of the German Empire, and
nowadays as Consulate General of the
Federal Republic of Germany.

Neo-Renaissance style
The interior design of the building is of the Neo-Renaissance style. Dark red,
the color of diplomacy, prevails on the walls and the ceiling is of gilded marble
decorated with stucco. The complex also includes the Istanbul branch of the
German Archaeological Institute and a guest house allocated to visitors. The visa
section and today’s security booths lie where once upon a time the stables were
located and coaches were stationed. The magni¿cent colonnaded garden stair
railing is also Kortüm’s creations

Maintaining The Original Look
The building of the German consulate
consists of a total of six Àoors. Its
monumental architecture has an
important place in the cityscape of
Beyoülu. A distinguishing feature of this
building is its façade of red bricks with
only a few places using natural stone.
The building has a size of 10,000 m2 and
rises above a plot of land measuring
55,000m2. The building underwent
renovations several times, the latest
of which was between 1983-1989. The
building has preserved much of its
authenticity since it was built. Today the
only things missing are cast iron eagle
¿gures removed in World War I.

As one of the older residents of
this city could you tell us some
about old Istanbul?
I wouldn’t be able to ¿t my memory
of this great city, which goes as far
back as the late 30’s, in such a brief
interview. All I can say is that despite
the devastation ushered in by the
Second World War (1939-1945),
Istanbul remained a gateway to
happiness and peace. However, this
exceptional town began to deteriorate
after the provincial migrations of the
1960’s.

Speaking about your love for music,
where was the music of that period
made? You have always followed
Istanbul’s cultural life closely. Can
you tell us about those old times?
The music market was centered in music
bars located in Taksim and TepebasÕ.
In the summer, open spaces such as the
Küçükçiftlik Park in Dolmabahçe were
also frequently attended. These places
were not appropriate for me to attend
in my youth. In the old city, Sunday
matinees were held in BahçekapÕ’s coffee
houses and the garden at Çiftesaraylar.
High-end musicians and famous soloists
would take the stage there.
Jubilee celebrations were commonplace
back then. The fortieth or ¿ftieth year of
a musician’s career would be celebrated
by many a music lover. The ones I
remember the most are the ones done
in honor of Munir Nureddin Selçuk in
1951, Neyzen Tev¿k KolaylÕ in 1952, and
Mes’ud Cemil in 1954.

tell us about the concerts
and events held in Beyoülu
back then?
The Taksim municipal music
club was located where the
Ceylan Intercontinental is
today. You would climb up
the high stairs and enter a
large lounge. At night it would
function as a traditional night
club. On Sundays they would
set up the chairs and it would
function as a makeshift concert
hall, since there weren’t any
in Istanbul at the time. That’s
when I would attend.

When you were little you always
wanted to be a captain?
Since my family lived in Üsküdar, I was
accustomed to board the Bosphorus
ferries. They always managed to draw
my interest. I would know the names
of the ferries and the numbers of their
chimneys by heart, but I hadn’t quite
understood how a propeller worked so I
was always mesmerized by the sparkling
soapy water the ferry left at its trail.

You have been the director of a
foundation from 1997-2006. Could
you tell us about your time at the
Türkpetrol Foundation?
The Türkpetrol Foundation is charitable
institution formed by the company
carrying the same name. Since 1969,
it has provided ¿nancial support to
countless projects. I was chosen as the
successor to the late Fethi Gemuhluoülu
(1922-1977) and had the pleasure of
collaborating with one of the founders,
Aydin Bolak (1925-2004) for many
years. We are still active, thankfully.
Between 1969-1992, our headquarters
were located in the Beyoülu district, ¿rst
Istiklal Avenue and then in Galatasaray.

You are also a master in calligraphy.
What can you tell us about this?
In 1953, I began learning Ottoman
calligraphy from Mahir Iz (1895-1974). In
1955, I became a student of the great master
Hezarfen Necmeddin Okyay (1883-1976).
Back then very few people were interested
in this art form. I must say I also owe much
to other masters such as Dr. Süheyl Ünver
(1898-1986), Macid Ayral (1891-1961), and
Halim ÖzyazÕcÕ (1898-1964).

studying at the Faculty of Medicine you started working
in a pharmacy. Wasn’t it in Ayaspaýa?
After I ful¿lled my military service in the DiyarbakÕr Military
Hospital in 1962, I opened up a the Gümüýsuyu pharmacy
just across the German consulate in Ayaspaýa. I continued
my profession here from 1963 until the end of 1978, but I have
to admit, I was never comfortable with it. I was the third
pharmacist in my family. It always bothered me to get money
from patients in need of medication. But what could I do?

As part of the 2010 European
Capital of Culture projects, you
undertook a project titled “99
Mushafs.” Can you tell us about it?
You have perhaps heard of the saying:
“The Holy Quran was been revealed in
the Hijaz, read in Egypt, and written in
Istanbul.” A study of the 99 names of Allah
was asked of me, and I put together a
wonderful piece.
What is it that you have been busy
with lately?
The activity that has occupied me for the
last two months and has ¿lled me with joy
is a calligraphy project I have prepared
for the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The Beyoülu Municipality
offers classes on wood painting,
calligraphy, illumination, and music.
What is your opinion on this kind of
training offered by the municipality?
I think that the municipality should focus
more on things like Ottoman Turkish
or foreign language lessons, computer
training, and other types of professional
training. Our traditional art styles are
much in need of a more academic level.
What is your advice to younger
generations?
As the late ûerif Muhiddin Targan
(1892-1967) would say: “Art is for the
aristocrat; it does not appeal to the
commoner.” Any young person who is
going to pursue this type of work has to
be under the supervision of a quali¿ed
teacher and must be very patient and
disciplined.

1932-1933 school year, and in the 19461947 academic year it became known
as the Sûruri school of Primary and
Secondary Education.
In 1952 it reverted again to a primary
school status and it continued serving
under this capacity until 1991.
The biggest transformation of the
establishment took place in 1983 with the
construction of an additional building in
the school grounds. The administration
of this additional building, speci¿cally
built for middle-school students,
eventually merged with the main
campus building to create the current
Sûruri School which offers both primary
and secondary education.

Located on a hillside overlooking KasÕmpaýa, the Sûruri School embodies the
VWRU\RIDSHULRGLQ%H\Rülu history. The establishment, which provides both
primary and secondary education, is located on a steep hillside and has been
active since the 1930’s; albeit with some structural modifications and name
changes along the way. The only thing that has not seemed to changed at all
are the the age-old plane trees in its garden.

Sûruri Efendi, the 16th century
gentlemen from which the school gets
its name, was the son of Çoban Efendi
from Gallipoli. He eventually became a
professor in the KasÕmpaýa madrasa and
also became the tutor to the young prince
Mustafa.
Despite the construction of a second
building the school grounds still have
plenty of space. Hence, the opportunities
for more extracurricular activities, at
least more so than other neighboring
schools. The grounds boast of a football,
basketball and volleyball court, as
well as a table tennis area. Of course,
the availability of such facilities has
played a key role in the school’s athletic
achievements. The rest of the campus
currently consists of 25 classrooms, a
science lab, a library, a gym, and the
administration rooms.

performed multiple concerts in many celebrations and festivities, and has achieved
recognition not only inside but also outside of campus.

At ¿rst glance this project may seem
one of urban design, but it’s more than
just that. It aims to develop the socioeconomic and cultural aspects of the
district as well.
Even though many of Beyoülu’s historical
buildings have been damaged over time,
today the district continues to be a focus
of interest. However, this is not to say that
physical aging has not taken a toll. Building
decay has decreased property values
thereby pushing high-end tenants out of
the area. With this in mind, the “Care for
Beyoülu” project has taken on the dynamic
task of restoring the district’s former
physical, functional, and cultural vibe.
The project aims at creating a
sustainable and protected historical
environment by integrating these
buildings into the vibrant social life of the
district so that more people begin to take
ownership of this culture of preservation.

Every building is a key piece in this puzzle of physical,
functional, cultural, and economic recovery. It is hoped
that many residents will participate and contribute to
this puzzle as more awareness is raised every day. Since
August 2011, several squares and close to 55 side streets of
Istiklal Street have received a facelift and transformation
has ensued rapidly in many surrounding areas.
Approximately 2,250 buildings and business owners have
been interviewed personally and have been presented with
several architectural solutions.
Currently in 2013, works continue in ûehit Muhtar, SÕra
Selviler, KasÕmpaýa square, Bahriye avenue, Feridiye
avenue, and the Meýrutiyet and Serdar Ömer Paýa
avenues. Additionally, works also continue in numerous
side streets of Talimhane and Istiklal Avenue.

Istanbul’s First Dervish Lodge
The Galata Mevlevi house was the ¿rst
dervish lodge that was established by
the leader of the Afyon dervish lodge,
Sheikh Mehmed Çelebi Dede, in Istanbul
under the reign Bayezid II (1447-1512).
Following damages caused by an
earthquake in 1509, the 17th-century
repairs eventually enlarged the complex.
The ¿rst known repair was conducted in
1649-50 by Ismail Aga, caretaker of the
dockyard and kitchens.
The museum’s oldest surviving piece is
the Hasan Aga Fountain dating from
1650. Unfortunately, the Harem, the
kitchen, and some of the dervish rooms
have not survived.

Transition to the Modern Museum
Between 2005-2009, the General Directorate of Foundations carried out the
restoration of the main dervish lodge. However, much of the landscaping and the
actual museum launch was realized through the efforts of the agency behind the
Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture (ECOC). In 2009, the Halet Said Efendi
and Sheikh Galip tombs were restored, and after further restoration work on the
main lodge building was completed, the Galata Mevlevi House was re-opened to the
public on November 21, 2011 as a modern museum.

The Dervish Rooms
The main story of the lodge is told in
the dervish rooms. Here you will see an
exposition on su¿sm, original furniture,
and a section dedicated to the last of the
Mevlevis. In the ¿fth room across the
central hallway, there is a display of a
Masnavi in a showcase, an extensive
poem by Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi,
the celebrated Persian Su¿ saint and
poet. The right side of hallway contains
rooms with recreations of the life of a
dervish. The sixth room focuses on Su¿
literature, the seventh room on worship
practices and chanting, and the eight
room on Su¿ music. If you choose to sit
down and relax in the central lounge, you
can watch a video presentation of the
history of the museum.

knows no bounds. As a special recognition
to those who have payed their taxes for
2013, the Beyoülu Tax Of¿ce has begun
to offer gratuitous soft drinks and coffee.
Taxpayers who have come to pay their

advertising, and road taxes are extremely
happy with the treat offered by the Tax

The Andante Classical Music Magazine, celebrating its 11th anniversary this year,

The Beyoülu Municipality has launched
awareness-raising seminars against obesity
in all schools and district mansions. The
seminars titled, the “Healthy Living Seminars”
have been launched in collaboration with the
Universal Italian Hospital. Specialist doctors
and dietitians inform students about healthy
life habits in the district’s schools.

Sponsored by the Beyoülu Municipality, the Beyoülu Sailing
Club has returned from its ¿rst two races of the season with
a trophy. The club participated in the National Independence
Day Cup race, hosted by the Istanbul Governorship Provincial
Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, as well as the
Buyukcekmece Municipality Federation Cup race. Athletes of
the club engaged in intense workouts during the winter months
with coach Mohammad Drover, and have now received top
place ¿nishes in both races.

Beyoülu Municipality’s Galaxy tent,
launched as an educational initiative,
continues to enjoy popularity. To
increase students’ interest in science
and scienti¿c studies, the tent invites
those who enter it to journey through
space. The tent will be set up in the
playgrounds of different primary

The festivities of the “Beyoülu Children’s Festival” organized every year by the
Beyoülu Municipality in Hasköy have ended. The festival, which counted more
than 60,000 participants from 33 schools and hosted 99 separate activities,
offered heaps of fun to children in attendance. The festival, a part of the April
23rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day celebrations, was host to many
colorful performances.

cooperation protocol with the Istanbul
Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of
Family and Social Policies as it strives
to offer better services to its disabled
and elderly residents. According to the
new protocol, the Municipality will now
oversee the bene¿t paid to the relatives of
the disabled and elderly who are offering
home care.

The Russian Culture Festival has
resumed with its craft fair. The festival
