Her zaman memnuniyetle... Hasan Gökhan Özbek Genel Koordinatör 9 Point Hotel Barbaros, the first Art-Tech Hotel of Turkey, opened doors to the Istanbulite and the city’s valuable visitors in 2009. At Point Hotel Taksim, the first facility of our brand, we decided that art should be an element elevating the emotional comfort of the interior spaces and relating the secret stories of our city to our guests in visual aesthetics. Therefore, inside our hotel in Taksim, we installed a permanent exhibition titled ‹stanbul, 1950 comprised of 232 black-and-white photographs by Ara Güler. This exhibition can be visited any time… Our new facility opened in Esentepe is situated at a district reflecting ‹stanbul’s modern silhouette. For this reason, we concluded that we should echo the city via contemporary art in the internal decoration. Today, as an outcome of almost our study, which lasted for about a year, we initiated under the curatorship of Beral Madra, our hotel is housing a permanent exhibition titled Password: ‹stanbul, comprised of 265 contemporary artworks by 26 artists. The exhibition is offering conceptual clues to our foreign guests in their venture for exploring this beautiful city. Prior to producing and installing their works, al these renowned artists worked with our curator Beral Madra. Together, they interpreted the internal spaces of the hotel, when the hotel was still under construction. This collaboration has been a unique experience in the formulation of the hotel’s internal architecture. It is common to see artwork offered to the viewer in the sheltering environment of halls, galleries and museums. Meanwhile, in our hotel the oeuvres are building a connection with the guests by reaching them at every point during their daily routine. This bondage once more reveals one of the most distinctive characteristics of contemporary art - that it emerges from and penetrates into life itself. We sincerely wish to help you personally experience in the magical atmosphere of Point Hotel Barbaros, the ‹stanbul stories, which the artworks, we are introducing in this book, are telling you. With these versatile pieces of contemporary art and with our team, who believes that offering service is also a form or art, we are expecting you to be our guests in our new address in Esentepe. Always with pleasure... Hasan Gökhan Özbek General Coordinator Nejat Ç›nar 12 ‹stanbul fiifreleri ‹stanbul’un ufuk çizgisi h›zla de¤ifliyor; ‹stanbul Bo¤az›’ndan, Marmara Denizi’nden ve köprülerden geçerken tarihsel dokuyu tafl›yan tepelerin arkas›nda gökdelenlerden oluflan yeni-gotik bir kentin görüntüsü gelece¤e yönelik iflaretler veriyor. Gökdelenler bir süredir ‹stanbul’a bak›fl›n özelliklerini belirliyor. While one is crossing the bridges, the Bosphorus or Marmara Sea, behind the hills carrying the historical wealth are skyscrapers. This panorama of a new-gothic city gives clues about the future. Recently skyscrapers have been determining the nature of the vision towards ‹stanbul. We can argue that there is a visual competition between the past and the future. However, the negative impression one gets by viewing this competition - between the mosques placed on the higher hilltops of the old city and these new buildings invading the northern parts loses effect thanks to the perspective differentiation. Up on the skyscrapers, the infinity of the city stretching to all four directions, impresses the viewers. Again due to geographical character, the panorama is not monotonous. The zigzagging sea shores, illimitable quarters and arbitrary housing startle the viewer. Yet, they make up a diversification, which deserves a long scrutinize. Somewhere in the new pattern, Point Hotel stands as a white and plain rectangle. Its architecture does not spoil the environmental view; yet it is a functional building with an identity. Designed with the new-modernist approach, the indoor spaces are calm and relaxing. This simplicity and functionality reflecting the Bauhaus influences of the 20th century could surprise those who are accustomed to the kitsch effulgence of the combination of traditional and modern styles imposed by post-modern trends. There is something else, which may surprise the hotel visitors: The hotel owners have spared special areas for the display of Turkish contemporary art works. Artists were invited to the hotel during its construction. Oeuvres were produced and selected. They were placed on the most suitable spots. Here, most probably for the first time, an organic relation was built between ‹stanbul’s tourism energy and contemporary art production. Hotel visitors and guests will find a chance to get to know and keenly observe ‹stanbul’s art world through the photographs, videos, sculptures, 3D installations, placed in all rooms and areas of common use. They will obtain detailed information about this production, as if they have been to a contemporary art museum. Attentive and interested eyes will notice that all of the works focus on ‹stanbul. In this exhibition concept, ‹stanbul is playing the lead role. And this hotel is a lieu prepared by its owners and exhibition producers, with the objective of presenting the hotel guests a different perspective over the metropolis. This is an approach to note that the different 14 üretiminin önemli bir merkezi durumuna gelmifltir. Farkl›l›klar her yönden gelen göçlerden kaynaklan›yor; yaln›z Anadolu’dan de¤il, flimdilerde Balkanlardan, Do¤u ve Güney komflulardan gelenlerin getirdi¤i kültür farkl›l›klar› yeni fark katmanlar› oluflturmaktad›r. 15 perspective covers a perception, understanding and interpretation with today’s ideas, concepts, interpretations and forms, with respect to the city’s history, traditions, and political, social and cultural life. Parallel to the global economy and politics, ‹stanbul has become an important a center of global contemporary art production since ‘80s to date. With economic and political criteria and traditions of peculiar to itself, the city is a center of global capital management. It also stands as a fruitful environment for knowledge and creativity economy. As for entertainment and tourism, ‹stanbul embodies all the components of the geographical and cultural environment it is a part of. It is an attraction spot between Asia and Europe. Meanwhile, having taken new forms and reached higher volumes culture and arts are contributing to these developments and are transfiguring the city. In the art works produced since early ‘90s, the city is highlighted as a crucial background for microand macro-narrations, representations, imitations and metaphors. Traces of images, lives, details, complexities and contradictions pertaining to ‹stanbul can be found in the photos, videos, installations of many artists. Even if the city does not constitute the main theme and the subject of the work, we can sense that it is the reason of the work’s creation. Above all, knowledge, culture and interpretation diversity draws attention in these works. Even though the globalization process imposes a straightening multinational company culture and a media- and entertainment-oriented culture - prevailing especially on areas of new development - the architectural and demographic structure of the city breaks this monotony. The diversification finds root in the migrants flowing in from all directions: Not only from Anatolia and also from the Balkans, and Eastern and Southern neighbors nowadays. The cultural differences brought by the incomers generate new divergence layers. Today, the cultures’ alloy is the most preferred method for culture development; this alloy can be viewed in the drawings, photographs and videos produced for ‹stanbul. ‹stanbul is described as one of the most attractive and fascinating cities of the world. Today’s works do not always narrate the Beautiful and the Divine; they also show the truth people do not want to see. On should bear in mind that those times, when the classical arts related the Beautiful and the Divine are over. In this context, depicting ‹stanbul with an Orientalist approach is also outdated. We are aware that the value criteria have changed after the collapse of the traditional and modern world views. Luckily, as a part of the social life, culture still functions as the criticizing conscious of the society. The artists can handle the challenges of making a change, in an environment, where the orientations Vo l k a n A s l a n 18 fiimdilerde flifreleri tüketim sistemi taraf›ndan kabul edilmek için ya da sanal ortama girebilmek için kullan›yoruz; flifreler bize bilgi ve bilgilenme gücü kazand›r›yor. fiifreler bizi çok-kimlikli k›larken bir yandan da anonimlefltiriyor. ‹stanbul ile karfl›laflt›r›ld›¤›nda, hiçbir zaman örtüflmeyecek düzen öneriyor A¤ao¤lu. Aslan’›n ilkokul okuma kitaplar›n›n resimsel diliyle çizdi¤i küçük öyküler, ‹stanbul’un büyük nüfusunun günlük yaflam›n› ve anonimli¤ini iflaret ediyor. ‹stanbul’un Rock ve Alternatif Rock müzi¤i sahnesini belgeleyen bu portre foto¤raflar›nda, bu müzi¤in ünlü ve ünsüz bütün üreticilerini izlemek olas›. Bayülgen’in siyah-beyaz tutkusu bu diziye Rock müzi¤inin arkas›nda gizli olan zihinsel ciddiyeti yans›t›yor. ‹lk bak›flta klasik ve a¤›rbafll› görünen foto¤raflar›n bir sonraki etkisinde Rock starlar›na özgü hiciv ve gizem bütün a¤›rl›¤›yla ortaya ç›k›yor. Otelin balo salonunun iki katl› fuayesinde Nuri Bilge Ceylan’n›n Turkeyscope bafll›kl› foto¤raf dizisinden ‹stanbul görüntüleri yer al›yor. Otelin 19 and practices of the past do not function anymore. They have to find new options and actions in order to give certain answers. Nonetheless, these answers are private, subjective, sealed and closed - most of the time leaving no room for peeking. It feels as if the viewer needs a password to step into this world. In the past, people, who had to know a password, were spies. Today this rule is outdated. Now, under the sovereignty of computers and bank systems, there are countless passwords in our daily lives. These passwords can startle and irk us or even put us under considerable stress. Nowadays, we are using passwords to be accepted by the consumption system or to enter the virtual world; passwords empower us with information. While they turn us into personalities with multiple identities, they also make us anonymous entities. For its part, this exhibition is proposing the viewer to take a walk in the mysterious pathways and promenades of ‹stanbul, using art works as passwords… At the rear corner of the bar in the lobby, there is a work making reference to the hi-tech computer system of the hotel. Yet, it turns the system into a city view. Always working with wasted materials, Yeflim A¤ao¤lu used computer chips this time. She turned them into miniature cities. This chip city of A¤ao¤lu presents the urban utopia in a computer game. A¤ao¤lu offers an order which can never be associated with ‹stanbul. This contradiction especially could help the ‹stanbul visitor notice the chaos of the city more clearly. At the business center right across this work, we find Gülçin Aksoy’s work titled You’re Late! Travels and business world have two dimensions: Time and space. Aksoy’s clocks installed in Microsoft’s room points an alert which is always present in the traveler’s and businessman’s subconscious: You’re late! The paradoxical presence of this little warning in the context of the infinity of the universe and the shortness of life may give the people who study in this room a chance of reaping wisdom and serenity. In the small niche at the northern part of the first mezzanine floor, there are four drawings of Volkan Aslan. The small stories Aslan depicted with the pictorial language of primers signify the daily life of the great population of ‹stanbul and its anonymity. Point Hotel collection also includes alternative music, probably the most attractive element of ‹stanbul culture industry. A visual series from the rock world has been specially prepared by Okan Bayülgen, who formerly shot and published portraits of well-known figures of theatre world, a circle he is closely familiar with. In these portrait photographs, 20 genelinde, bu özellik belirlidir: ‹stanbul yarat›c› insanlar›n düfl gücünde, zihinsel etkinli¤i içinde, siyasal ve toplumsal söylemleri ba¤lam›nda onlar taraf›ndan nas›l yorumlan›yor ve nas›l gösteriliyor? Otelin odalar›n›n ortas›ndaki 10 katl› avlunun kuzey 21 documenting rock and alternative rock music stages in ‹stanbul, one can find all the famous and infamous musicians of this genre. Bayülgen’s black-white passion reflects on this series a secret mental seriousness concealed behind rock music. The photos seem very classical and earnest at the fist glance. On second thought, the irony and enigma peculiar to rock stars comes out solidly. At the twostorey foyer of the hotel’s ballroom, there are ‹stanbul photos of Nuri Bilge Ceylan - pieces from his photograph series titled Turkeyscope. Numerous photographic reflections of ‹stanbul filled the archives since the discovery of photography and since it stepped into the cultural life of Ottoman society in late 19th century. It is very difficult to make a preference among these images. To decide which photographs are to be presented one should set very clear case-specific criteria. In the hotel, these criteria are definite: How is ‹stanbul interpreted in the minds, mental activities of creative people and how it is reflected by them in the context of their political and social discourses? The complicated transitions and associations among the signifier, signified and the seen can be observe in every photographs; exploring these, is a task to be fulfilled by the viewer. Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s photographs is the synthesis of the two production genres, he handles successfully: cinema and photography. Twelve ‹stanbul photos from the 2000s are displayed as a special exhibition in the two floors of the Ballroom. Among all the seasons seen in ‹stanbul, wintertime is chosen. This preference takes the image close to the tang of black and white. Furthermore, the associations of coldness, desolateness, isolation, solitude, serenity and silence the snow creates on human mind, are also reflections of the deep sorrow and serenity of Ceylan’s cinema discourse. On the two side walls of the hotel we find Nejat Ç›nar’s work, titled Incoming Document (White), Outgoing Document (Black), he specially designed for the hotel. The state of being the voyeur and being watched in today’s life culture. In all the places we go in and come out of, this state creates an imperceptible environment, which can affect lives when necessary. Different mental processes and emotions are experienced while being the voyeur or being watched. The 20 motion-sensitive cameras Nejat Ç›nar installed face-to-face at the side entrance of the Hotel remind the viewer this continual surveillance atmosphere. At the same time, the viewer cannot help thinking about the uncontrollable amplitude of images, produced and saved by these cameras. In the central courtyard of the executive floor, we find Melih Görgün’s graphic work, reflecting abstract effects on the word ‹stanbul. On the wall at the southern end of the first mezzanine floor, there is a canvas painting by Hakan Gürsoytrak. Looking like a carpet with flower motifs from a certain distance, this work actually narrates a complicated story. Placed among the motifs of entangled flowery branches, the patterns are comprised Günnur Özsoy 23 of images associating the strip cartoon language. The truth of war and peace standing side by side in the global world, the objects of desire of the consumption culture, pop-culture images peculiar to ‹stanbul are presented to the perception of the viewer, with a black humoristic approach. In the entrance hall, on the corner of the lounge at the right side, there is Bengü Karaduman’s work titled Parallel Parade. Today’s person is living in the order built by the sign systems founded in the consumption culture, the most influential tool of global capitalism. The visual material presented by this sign system is represented with plain graphic illustrations in Bengü Karaduman’s black and white animated movie. In this animation, in a rather minimalistic approach we see the parade of the desire process triggered by the consumption economy; this is the parade of all productions from women fetishism to the naked truth of war. The installation also presents an entertaining illusion for the viewer; the objects seen in the animated movie stretch out from the screen as images. On the northern wall of the 10-storey courtyard in the center of the hotel rooms, we see Serhat Kiraz’s work titled Ended Century. Being the largest scale installation realized in Turkey, this work collectively reflects the installation style of Kiraz, which he fictionalized based on a universal language since 1977 to-date. This 10-storey image feast covers the visual memory of the 20th century. On each floor of the courtyard, Kiraz redesigns a decade of the 20th century with the selected images. The photos remind the slide technique - the most effective visual material of the recent past - which is almost never used anymore. On the empty spaces below the slides, the topic and the date of the photos are written. Using this method, Kiraz offers the viewer to explore intersecting images throughout decades both on the horizontal and vertical planes. Focusing mainly on historic events, science, technology and life, the images picked by Kiraz provoke the historical consciousness and memory of the viewer. On the right wall of the hotel restaurant on the ground floor, there is the photo-series by S›tk› Kösemen, titled Going Across. These photos zoom in the waters of the Bosphorus. Kösemen’s Bosphorus is abstract and enigmatic; the artist concentrates his standpoint -and that of our-to this magnificent, distinguished disjunction or discontinuity. From the literary point, photos associate Orhan Pamuk’s Bosphorus portrait, which narrates that this water is a paradise and a hell at the same time. In these photos, Kösemen carry the viewer away in K e m a l Tu f a n 24 duvar›nda Serhat Kiraz’›n Kapanm›fl Yüzy›l bafll›kl› ifli yer al›yor. Bu on katl› imge flöleni 20. yy’›n görsel belle¤ini içeriyor. Kiraz, avlunun her kat› için 20.yy’›n 10 y›l›n›, seçti¤i imgelerle yeniden kurguluyor. Bo¤aziçi’nin bu ak›nt›l› sular›n›n yak›n plan çekimleri kentin can al›c›, belirsiz, ikilemli durumunu/düzenini a盤a vuruyor ve sakl›yor. Bak›fllar›n karfl›laflmas› ya da bak›fl› kaç›rmak, iki insan aras›ndaki yabanc›l›¤›n gerginli¤i, asansörün fiziksel ortam›n› doldurur. Kösemen’in videosu bu ortama müdahale ediyor; elektronik ortamdaki üçüncü oyuncu, insan›n ruhsal durumunu hicvediyor ve sanat›n oyuncu yönüyle izleyicinin ruhsal durumunu yönlendiriyor. Otelin giriflinde, resepsiyonun sa¤ taraf›ndaki duvarda Murat Morova’n›n Tahammül Mülkü, bafll›kl› ifli yer al›yor. Küresel kültür, bu otelin yap›sal, biçimsel ve estetik mant›¤›n›n arka alan›d›r. Morova’n›n, melez Atlas figürü - ki bu melezlik Do¤u’nun ifade arac› hat tekni¤i ile Bat›’n›n ifade arac› desen tekni¤inin bireflimidir - oteldeki ve kuflkusuz genelde insan dokusunun günümüz küresel düzeni içindeki konumunun çizgisel bir metaforudur. Morova, burada Yunan Mitolojisinin bize hala sundu¤u düflünce ve yorum gücü ve bilgeli¤ini Atlas öyküsüyle görsellefltiriyor, ama ayn› zamanda bu bilgeli¤in ‹slam uygarl›¤›yla bireflti¤i bir süreci iflaret ediyor. ‹flin üçüncü bir boyutu da, dünyan›n insan›n düflünsel gücüyle yarat›ld›¤›n› gösterir. Morova, günümüzde aramay› sürdürdü¤ümüz Do¤u-Bat› bireflimini, görsel bir imgeyle dile getirmektedir. Asma katlara ç›kan merdivenlerin duvarlar›na ve ikinci asma kata Kadri Özayten’in Bar›fl Günleri adl› bir 25 stereotyped Bosphorus images. And he offers something with endless visuality and endless invisibility: an abstract password to understand ‹stanbul. The close-ups of these streamed waters of Bosphorus disclose and conceal the critical, vague, dilemmatic state/order of the city. Another work by Kösemen, Waiting, is placed in the hotel’s elevators. Hotel elevators offer the smallest space to the guests, where they stand alone or with other people they do not know. The silent moments and brief waiting between going up and down… Making or avoiding eye-contact, the tension of the alienation of two people, fill the physical atmosphere of the elevator. Kösemen’s video interferes with this atmosphere; the third player in this electronic environment satirizes the frame of mind. With the playful quality of art, it channels the viewer’s frame of mind. At the entrance, on the wall to the right of the reception desk, there is Murat Morova’s work titled Hubble-Bubble. Global culture is the background of this hotel’s structural, formal and aesthetic rationale. Morova’s hybrid Atlas figure - this hybridity is the synthesis of the calligraphy, the means of expression of the East and of the illustration techniques, the means of expression of the West - is the lineal metaphor of the position of the human texture at the hotel and clearly within today’s global order. Here, Morova visualizes the power and wisdom of thinking and interpretation, the Greek mythology presents us with the story of Atlas. Yet, he points to a process, during which this wisdom intersected with the Islam civilization. A third dimension of this work shows that the world is created by the ideational power of mankind. Morova expresses the West-East synthesis we continue to seek today, via a visual image. A work series of Kadri Özayten, titled Peace Days is installed on the walls of the stairs heading to the mezzanine floors and on the second mezzanine floor. Özayten actually produced this work for the children of ‹stanbul. It was designed for the Art for Children exhibition realized under the curatorship of Özgül Aslan in the frame of ‹stanbul 2010 European Culture Capital Portable Art Project. The hotel will also host children; and these butterflies - except for one all of them are covered with camouflage smocks - injects the children the hope that there are global peaces as opposed to global wars. The fourth Butterfly is made of wood and on it we see wooden ducklings appealing to the children’s eyes. Ye fl i m A ¤ a o ¤ l u 26 dizi ifli yerlefltirildi. Otelin 20. Kat›ndaki restoran giriflinde ve duvarlar›nda Ardan Özmeno¤lu’nun Yeflilçam 2009 bafll›kl› ifli yer al›yor. Post-it üstüne bask› iflleri üreten Ardan Özmeno¤lu, bu tekni¤i ince pleksi-camlar üstüne uygulad›. Soyut özellikler tafl›yan di¤er bir ifl, Gülay Semercio¤lu’nun gümüfl rengi telden örülmüfl soyut ikonlar› ikinci asma katta karfl›l›kl› iki duvar› kapl›yor. Semercio¤lu, y›llard›r büyük bir sab›rla madeni telleri örüyor ve dokuyor, dayan›kl›, parlak ve müzikal ikonlar üretiyor. Semercio¤lu’nun bu iflçilikle üretti¤i iki tür yap›t› var; bir dizi yap›t bu otele yerlefltirilen ›fl›¤›n madeni tel üstünde oynayabilece¤i oyunlar› denetleyen soyut biçimler, di¤er bir dizi ise, siyasal ve ekonomik sistemlerin yaratt›¤› stereotip iflaret dilinin örnekleridir. Otelin önünde, yo¤un trafi¤in tam ortas›nda, ‹stanbul’un denizle çevrili bir kent oldu¤unu an›msatan bir Kalyon yer al›yor. Kalyon, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in gemileri karadan yürütüp ‹stanbul’u fethetmesini an›msatmaktad›r. ‹stanbul’un kendine özgü gizemli deniz- kara iliflkisi de yo¤un trafi¤in ortas›nda izleyicinin karfl›s›na ç›kan bu geleneksel gemi yorumuyla yinelenmektedir. ‹kinci asma katta, karfl›l›kl› iki 27 In the entrance and on the walls of the restaurant up on the 20th floor, we find Ardan Özmeno¤lu’s work titled Yeflilçam 2009. Producing imprinted works on post-it, Ardan Özmeno¤lu employed this technique on pieces of thin plexi-glass. Offering a rich series of memory-image at this spot, Özmeno¤lu presents slices from the Turkish cinema history with imprints on plexi-glass. The portraits of almost all actors and actresses of the past and ‹stanbul views from some cult movies, gathered with a Warholean approach, suggest the hotel guests to get some information about Turkish cinema. We find Özmeno¤lu’s cinema theme on the other wall of the hall as well. Here, scenes picked from Kanun Nam›na (In the Name of the Law), one of the cult films of Turkish cinema, show the viewer ‹stanbul of 50 years ago. On the corner to the left of the reception desk, there is an abstract work by Günnur Özsoy. The work is comprised of pebble-ish forms made using felt, a traditional material. Questioning the relationship between the space and the object and the qualities of color and light affecting the perception, Özsoy turns her questions into abstract forms. These colorful felt objects function as a counterproposal for all the figurative artworks in the lobby. Another abstract work by Gülay Semercio¤lu covers the two walls of the second mezzanine floor. These are abstract icons knitted with silvery thread. For many years Semercio¤lu has been producing durable, shiny and musical icons by knitting and weaving metal wires. There are two types of products the artist produces with this handwork: On the one hand, we have the abstract forms controlling the games light can play on metal wires. The work installed in the hotel belongs to this series. On the other hand, there are the examples of the stereotype sign language created by the political and economic systems. At the front of the hotel, right in the middle of the traffic jam, there is a Galleon, reminding that ‹stanbul is surrounded by sea. This sculpture of Kemal Tufan, who has produced open-air sculptures in many countries, is accompanied by the Stingrays. These Stingrays are placed inside, on the two glasses at the hall entrance and in the aquarium in the small courtyard providing sunlight for the hall on the right-handside of the ground floor restaurant. While the Galleon signifies the history and geography of the city, the Stingrays channel the viewer to the inner world of the sea. Hotel is situated on the hill between the Bosphorus and the valley opening to the Golden Horn. As the main artery of the old city, Golden Horn is naturally protected against the outer dangers. However, human effort and power climbed over the hills and claimed the ownership of this deep gulf. The galleon reminds how Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror had the ships transported through the land and conquered ‹stanbul. Furthermore, the mysterious sea-land relation peculiar to ‹stanbul is repeated with this traditional ship interpretation popping in front of the viewer in the middle of this heavy traffic. On the second mezzanine floor, on two opposite walls we find a nature metaphor by Nihal Sesalan Yüzsever, made with wood carving and painting technique. 28 duvarda, Nihal Sesalan Yüzsever’in tahta oyma ve boyama tekni¤i ile yap›lm›fl bir do¤a metaforu yer al›yor. Otelin odalar›nda Ali Cabbar, Gül Ilgaz, Esen Karol, S›tk› Kösemen, Pablo Martinez, Sinan Niyazio¤lu, Baflak Ürkmez ve Mohaç Yücel’in foto¤raf iflleri yer al›yor. Ali Cabbar’›n kent ve insan iliflkisine odaklanan çizgisel resimleri, Gül Ilgaz’›n kuflbak›fl› Bo¤az kurgulamas›, Esen Karol’un meneviflli ‹stanbul manzaras›, Pablo Martinez’in çiftmanzaralar›, Sinan Niyazio¤lu’nun ‹stanbul’un mitolojisini irdeleyen dijital manzaralar›, Baflak Ürkmez’in, çevrimiçi-‹stanbul’u, Mohaç Yücel’in popüler kültür metaforlar›, otelin konuklar›na farkl› bak›fl seçenekleri sunuyor. Bu bak›fl seçenekleri kimi zaman sanatç›n›n bak›fl›na karfl› ç›kabilir, kimi zaman da onunla örtüflebilir. Türkiye’deki ça¤dafl sanat üretiminden zengin bir kesiti gösteren bu koleksiyon, hem ‹stanbul’a gelen izleyiciye ça¤dafl sanat konusunda bilgilenme ayr›cal›¤›n› sunuyor, hem de bu olgunun otel misafirleri arac›l›¤›yla baflka co¤rafyalara tan›t›lmas›n› sa¤l›yor. Beral Madra, Eylül 2009 29 In the hotel rooms there are photographs by Ali Cabbar, Gül Ilgaz, Esen Karol, S›tk› Kösemen, Pablo Martinez, Sinan Niyazio¤lu, Baflak Ürkmez and Mohaç Yücel. These photos do not just reflect a representation of ‹stanbul; they highlisht the subjective standpoint of the artist and deconstruct ‹stanbul imaginatively and visually. The hotel guests are offered different viewpoints through: Linear photos focusing on human-city relation by Ali Cabbar, Bosphorus with bird’s-eye perspective by Gül Ilgaz, tempered ‹stanbul panorama by Esen Karol, couple-views of Pablo Martinez, the digital views of Sinan Niyazio¤lu, scrutinizing ‹stanbul’s mythology, online-‹stanbul by Baflak Ürkmez and popular culture metaphors of Mohaç Yücel. Sometimes these standpoint alternatives may oppose to or sometimes may overlap with the artist’s view. Presenting a rich section of the contemporary art production in Turkey, this collection offers the ‹stanbul visitor the privilege of getting informed on contemporary art. Plus, it also helps promote this concept in other parts of the world via hotel guests. Sinemaya Koza adl› k›sa filmiyle ad›m›n› atan Ceylan bu filmiyle, Cannes Film Festivali'nin ilgili bölümüne kat›lma baflar›s›n› gösterdi. After graduating from Bo¤aziçi University Department of Electricity and Electronics Engineering, he studied cinema at Mimar Sinan University for two years. In 80’s some of Ceylan’s portfolios were published in the reputable culture and art magazines of the time - such as Gergedan. Ceylan has been the director, scriptwriter and producer of each four of his films. Having started filmmaking with a short movie titled Koza (Cocoon), Ceylan achieved with this movie to take part in the relevant section of Cannes Film Festival. In 1997, Ceylan shot his first feature film titled Kasaba (The Small Town). This pastoral and autobiographical movie was shown in many festivals including Berlin Film Festival. Kasaba was followed by May›s S›k›nt›s› (Clouds of May), a meta-film following the autobiographical theme of the first two movies. This film drew considerable attention and was released in the competition section of Berlin Film Festival. 56. Cannes Film Festivali'nde yar›flan ve favori filmler aras›nda gösterilen Nuri Bilge Ceylan'›n 2002 yap›ml› dram filmi Uzak, Alt›n Palmiye'den sonra festivalin ikinci önemli ödülü olan Büyük Jüri Ödülü'nü (Grand Prix) ald›. Filmde yaln›z ve yabanc›laflm›fl iki kuzeni oynayan filmin baflrol oyuncular› Muzaffer Özdemir ve bir trafik kazas›nda ölen Mehmet Emin Toprak da “En ‹yi Erkek Oyuncu Ödülü”nü paylaflarak Türk sinema tarihinin en parlak baflar›lar›ndan birine imza att›lar. In 2002, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s drama Distant competed in 56th Cannes Film Festival. Pointed as one of the favorites of the competition, Distant received the Grand Prix, the second most important prize after the Palm D’Or. The two lead actors of the film, who played the lonely and alienated cousins, Muzaffer Özdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak (who passed away in a tragic accident) shared the “Best Leading Actor” award. These accomplishments are still standing among the outstanding successes of Turkish cinema history. Ceylan'›n dördüncü uzun metraj› ‹klimler, 2006 Cannes Film Festivali'nin yar›flmal› bölümüne kabul edildi. Ceylan'›n bugüne kadar çekti¤i en büyük bütçeli eser olan film, dijital görüntü teknolojisiyle kotar›ld› ve görüntü yönetmenli¤ini Ceylan'›n kendisinin üstlenmedi¤i ilk Nuri Bilge Ceylan filmi oldu. Filmin bir di¤er önemli özelli¤i ise, Nuri Bilge Ceylan'›n bu kez kamera önüne de geçerek, efli Ebru Ceylan'la baflrolleri paylaflm›fl olmas›d›r. Ceylan’s fourth feature film, ‹klimler (Climates) was accepted to the semi-final section of Cannes Film Festival in 2006. “Climates” was allocated the largest budget among Ceylan’s films. It also is the first movie of the director, where Ceylan did not also act as the director of photography. Moreover, this time Nuri Bilge Ceylan stood in front of the camera as well. He shared the lead role with his wife Ebru Ceylan. 2008 Cannes Film Festivali'nde Üç Maymun filmiyle “En ‹yi Yönetmen Ödülü”nü ald›. In 2008, Ceylan received the “Best Director” Award in Cannes Film Festival with his movie Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys). In every period of the artist’s studies, painting on canvas and lithography went parallel to one another. In the beginning Özayten was mainly interested in lithography techniques. His early works included symbolic elements, where a linear texture covered the entire surface. These works can be defined as “fantastic-realistic” studies. In 1978, Özayten took part in “Atom Power” (Atomkraft) exhibition, one of the “protest” exhibitions of the time.
