Mutlu, huzurlu, nefleli, sakin, güzel bahar günlerinde okuman›z için haz›rlad›¤›m›z bu say›m›z›n konular›
hayli ilgi çekici. Mesela ‹stanbul’da geçti¤imiz aylarda aç›lan ve kültür&sanat kavram›na farkl› bir boyut
getirerek faaliyete geçen Borusan Müzik Evi’ni enine boyuna inceledik. Oradan Türkiye’de müzayedecili¤e
uzand›k ve müzayede evlerinden girip, sanat eserlerinden ç›kt›k… Bu say›daki seyahat rotalar›m›z ise
‹ran ve Kapadokya. Moda çekimi için Gaziantep’e, yemek çekimi için de Konya’ya gittik.
Otellerimiz ad›na sevindirici bir baflka haber daha var. Suriye’deki varl›¤›m›z›n birinci y›l›n› geçti¤imiz ay
bir gala yeme¤i organizasyonu ile kutlad›k. fiam, Halep ve Palmyra flehirlerinde bulunan 3 otelimiz ile
sadece Türkiye’nin de¤il ayn› zamanda Suriye’nin de önemli otel zincirlerinden biri oldu¤umuzu
sevinerek belirtmeliyim.

Dear friends of Dedeman,
There are constant quarrels between those who prefer warming up in the heat and those who prefer to
stay cool in the snow. However, spring is the winner of this disagreement, the compromise. The last
ember falls and spring begins…
We have prepared this issue for you to enjoy on the most joyful, peaceful, calm and beautiful spring
days. Our topics this month are extremely intriguing. For example, we have investigated the new Borusan
Music House that has opened in the past months in ‹stanbul. This venue is said to have introduced a
very diverse vision of what culture and art venues are normally known to be like. From there we checked
out the auction scene of Turkey, and visited auction houses to enjoy the art on offer… The travel routes
in our issue this month are Iran and Cappadocia. For a fashion photo shoot we traveled to Gaziantep, and
for a food photo shoot we headed over to Konya.
We have some more good news for our hotels. In the last month, we celebrated our first year in Syria
with a gala dinner organization. I would also like to point out that with our three hotels in Damascus,
Aleppo and Palmyra, we have also been fortunate enough to branch out with our hotel chain into Syria.
We wish you days full of plenty of travel…

‹stanbul Modern, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin ilk kurulufl y›llar›nda, foto¤raflar›yla genç
cumhuriyetin ve Türk insan›n›n dünyaya tan›t›lmas›nda en büyük görevi üstlenen Othmar
Pferschy’nin foto¤raflar›n› sergiliyor. Eserler, Avusturya’n›n Viyana, Salzburg ve
sanatç›n›n do¤du¤u kent olan Graz’daki sergilerden sonra flimdi de Dornbirn’de Museum
der Stadt Dornbirn’de... Türkiye’de 43 y›l yaflayan ve modern manzara foto¤rafç›l›¤›n›
bafllatarak, insan ve do¤a iliflkileri, kentlerin de¤iflen ve ça¤dafllaflan yüzü gibi, güzel olan›
araflt›rma ve saptama sorumlulu¤unun en güzel örneklerini veren Othmar Pferschy’nin
89 yap›t›n›n yer alaca¤›, “Othmar Pferschy: Modern Türkiye” bafll›kl› foto¤raf sergisi
20 Mart’a kadar tarihleri aras›nda görülebilir.
Othmar Pferschy is known for taking photos, both of the people and of the young republic,
of Turkey during the years just after it became known as the Republic of Turkey.
The photos have been exhibited in Vienna, Salzburg and the artist’s hometown of Graz and
now they are shown in Dornbirn at the Museum der Stadt Dornbirn. The artist lived in
Turkey for 43 years and his work is one of the best examples of the transformation of
Turkey, of what it once was. The exhibit, titled, ‘Othmar Pferschy: Modern Turkiye’, which
features 89 pieces, will be at the ‹stanbul Modern Museum until 20 March.

has a wide variety of wine to
choose from, which goes quite well
with the tapas and smaller dishes
on offer. Mushroom mashed
potatoes, goose liver and many
other unique dishes are found on

THIS BOOK IS DELICIOUS!
Turkish cuisine is a mix of many different cultures
and now one of the foremost food writers has
added another to the list, titled ‘Sonsuz
Türk Mutfa¤›’ (Forever Turkish Kitchen). Eyüp
Kemal Sevinç received a gold medal in London in
1996 and is taking his first step into food writing
with the release of his book; his book is full of
delicious recipes, each better than the next. Some
of the recipes included are more traditional dishes
such as rice with vegetables, stuffed squash
blossoms, stewed octopus while more modern
dishes such as olive soup with fresh thyme, smoked
aubergine with shrimps, chicken breast pudding
with rose leaves are also featured. And as for
desserts, the book has interesting creations such as
ice-cream with raki and red pepper dessert. This
book is perfect for those who are looking to
cook something new or who just want to develop
their cooking skills even more; the book also has
lots of useful information such as the origin of
many dishes’ names and more.
PICASSO BU SEFER PERA’DA
PICASSO AT THE PERA
Geçti¤imiz y›llarda tablolar› ile Türk sanatseverlerle ‹stanbul’da buluflan Picasso
bu y›l da “gravürleri” ile Pera Müzesi’nde boy gösteriyor. Sanatç›n›n yak›n
dostu, yap›tlar›n›n ateflli bir hayran› ve s›ra d›fl› bir yay›nc› olan Ambroise
Vollard’n›n siparifli üzerine üretilmifl 100 adet gravürden oluflan seçki genel
olarak aflk, erotizm, tutku, kaotik ve mitolojik temalar kadar yaflamöyküsel izler
de tafl›yor. Ambroise Vollard’a ait üç portreden baflka, “Aflk Savafl›” ya da
“Tecavüz” olarak an›lan 5 bask›; “Heykelt›rafl›n Atölyesi”nden k›rk alt›;
Rembrandt temal› 4; Minotor bafll›kl› on befl bask› ile yirmi yedi adet çeflitli
kompozisyon bulunan ve ‹spanya’daki Fundacion MAPFRE (MAPFRE Vakf›)
Koleksiyonu’na ait olan Picasso – Suite Vollard gravür dizisi
18 Nisan’a kadar Pera Müzesi’nde görülebilir.
Last year Picasso’s paintings were displayed in ‹stanbul and this year his
sketches will be displayed at the Pera Museum in an exhibition titled, ‘Picasso Suite Vollard, Engravings’. The 100 engravings in the collection were created at the
request of the artist’s close friend, fan and eccentric publisher Ambroise Vollard.
The themes include love, erotica, obsession and chaos. There are three portraits of
Ambroise Vollard, 5 prints titled, ‘Aflk Savafl›’ (Love War) or ‘Tecavüz’ (Rape),
46 from the ‘Sculpture Atelier’, 4 that are Rembrant-themed, Minotor titled 15 prints
and 27 mixed compositions. The collection belongs to Spain’s Fundación MAPFRE
and is a collaboration between the Pera Museum, Fundación MAPFRE and Instituto
Cervantes. This exhibition can be seen until 18 April.

Kulübü taraf›ndan düzenlenen “Uluslararas› Akdeniz Denizcilik
Haftas›” bu y›l da yelkenli tekne sporunun yükselen y›ld›zlar›n›
Akdeniz’in en güzel liman kentlerinden olan Marsilya’ya çekiyor.
2-5 Nisan 2010 tarihinde düzenlenecek olan organizasyon

Sea lovers’ favorite sport is without a doubt sailing and this time
around the races begin at Marseille. The Marseille Yacht Club has
been organizing The International Mediterranean Sailing Week
since 1965. This year the even takes place from 2-5 April 2010
and is one of the most important events for Marseille, which is
known for its sailing. To discover the beauty of the city and

1950 y›l›nda Richard Nash taraf›ndan yaz›lan, sinema ve müzikale de
uyarlanan “Ya¤murcu”, umudun inançla beslendi¤i bir ortamda s›cak
insan hikayeleri anlatan bir oyun. Kadriye ve Müflfik Kenter’in
yönetmenli¤ini yapt›¤› “Ya¤murcu”nun dekorunu Ali Yenel, kostümlerini
Gönül Sipahio¤lu, müziklerini ise Tolga Çebi üstlenmifl. Amerika’n›n
bat› bölgesinde kurak bir taflra kasabas›nda evde kalm›fl Lizze Curry’nin
koca bulma beklentisiyle gitti¤i, fakat hüsranla sonuçlanan kuzenlerini
ziyaretten dönüflüyle bafllayan oyunda Starbuck ad›nda, ya¤mur
ya¤d›raca¤› sözünü veren, cazibeli bir doland›r›c›n›n çiftli¤e gelifli ve
Lizzie’nin kendisini yepyeni bir biçimde görmesini sa¤layacak olaylar›n
geliflimi anlat›l›yor. Yaz›ld›¤› günden bu yana k›rktan fazla dile çevrilerek
say›s›z kez sahnelenmifl bir tiyatro klasi¤i olan “Ya¤murcu”nun rollerini
ise Defne fiener Günay, Münir Akça, Ali Kil, Alican Yücesoy, Do¤acan
Taflp›nar, Niflan fiirinyan, Emrah Eren ve Rag›p Savafl paylafl›yor.
“Ya¤murcu” ‹stanbul Yunus Emre Sahnesi’nde, sonras›nda ise turne
kapsam›nda Anadolu’nun çeflitli kentlerinde görülebilir.
Written in 1950 by Richard Nash, The Rainmaker has been
turned into a film and musical. It tells of the story of Lizzie Curry
during Depression era America. She is a spinster and spends
most of her time taking care of her father and two brothers on the
family cattle ranch, though the devastating drought is at the
forefront of her mind. Her family is more worried about Lizzie’s
lack of marriage prospects, until a charming con man named
Starbuck arrives. He promises to bring rain in exchange for
$100 and so ensures the drama and excitement. The play has
been translated into 40 languages since the day it was written.
Defne fiener Günay, Münir Akça, Ali Kil, Alican Yücesoy,

Savafl are slated to appear in this version of the play. The play
will take place at ‹stanbul’s Yunus Emre Stage and then
tour various cities within Anatolia.

Tribeca Film Festival takes place from 21
April – 2 May this year and has been
organized since 2002, by founder Robert de
Niro and the Tribeca Film Center,

Müzayedecilik asl›nda çok eski zamanlara, M.Ö. 500’lü y›llara, Babil’e ve antik Roma
devrine dek uzan›yor. Ne var ki o zaman sat›fla ç›kar›lan parçalar bugüne göre çok
farkl›. Babil’de genç k›zlar›n evlilik amac›yla, Roma’da da savafl esirlerinin köle olarak
sat›lmas› ya da borçlar›n borçlunun mallar›n›n sat›fla ç›kart›larak tahsil edilmesi aç›k
art›rma ile sat›fl›n ilk örnekleri oldu ancak gerçek anlam›yla müzayedecilik 17. yüzy›lda
ortaya ç›kt›. Ortaça¤ dönemindeki sanatsal durgunlu¤un bitifliyle sanatsal üretim
yeniden canlanm›fl, 17. yüzy›lla birlikte müzayedecilik bugünkü flekliyle yeniden hayat
buldu. Frans›z Devrimi’nden k›sa bir süre sonra, 18. yüzy›l›n sonlar›nda müzayedeler,
dönemin buluflma noktalar› olan “café”lerde ve meyhanelerde yap›l›yordu.
Bu müzayedeler günlük olarak düzenleniyordu ve sat›lacak olan parçalar bir katalog
haline getiriliyor ve ilgilenenlere sunuluyordu. Bu kataloglar›n kendisi bile sanat eseri
de¤erindeydi ve sat›fla ç›kart›lacak parçalarla ilgili çok detayl› bilgiler içeriyordu.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Auctioneering actually goes back quite far, to 500BC, to
the time of Babil and ancient Rome. Of course what was
on auction back then is quite different to what is put on
auction today. Young women were auctioned off for
marriage in Babil and in Rome war criminals were
auctioned off as slaves, so in essence auctioning, as we
know it today only dates back to the 17th century. With
the ending of the slowing down of the creation of art in
the Middle Ages, there was a new explosion of art
creation. And auctioning found life again in the 17th
century. After the French revolution, at the end of the
18th century, auctions were held in the meeting points,
such as cafes or taverns. These auctions took place daily;
the objects that were to be auctioned off were mentioned
in a catalog that was distributed to potential bidders.
These catalogs were so detailed they themselves were
even considered works of art and provided ample
information about the items to be auctioned.

ediliyordu. Mal›n› satmak isteyen tellala teslim eder,
tellal da Kapal›çarfl›’daki dükkanlar› tek tek gezerek en
yüksek fiyata satard›. 1934’te ç›kart›lan Mezat
Talimatnamesi’yle bu faaliyet Kapal›çarfl› Mezat
Müdürlü¤ü olarak bilinen yerde Hal›, Mücevher ve
Eflya fiubeleri aç›larak sürdürülmeye bafllad›.
Bugünse müzayedeler Türkiye’de genellikle genifl,
ferah ve sofistke bir ortam sunan otel salonlar›nda
gerçeklefltiriliyor.

Müzayedelerde genellikle müzayedeye bir parça için
belirlenen fiyat›n beflte bir eksi¤iyle bafllan›yor.

In Turkey, auctioning goes back to the Ottoman
times. The auctions began at the Iç Bedesten in the
Covered Bazaar and were officiated by the city
government. Those who wanted to sell an object got
in contact with a broker, who then went from one
shop to the next in the Covered Bazaar looking for
the highest bidder. According to the Auction
Regulatory Statute enacted in 1934, rugs, jewelry and
other objects were also added to the list of items
auctioned, within the area controlled by the Covered
Bazaar Auction Management. Today in Turkey,
auctions are generally held in larger, refreshing and
sophisticated areas such as hotel lounges.
How are they done?
Normally, the price of the item up for auction is
determined, and the starting price is 1/5 of that price.
The bidders raise the price as they bid and naturally
the highest bidder receives the item. The winner pays
1/4 of the price of the item’s worth up front, as well
as the amount the item was officially settled upon.
Auction houses aren’t just places where objects are
purchased and sold. They have become places were
those in the art world congregate, gossip and catch
up, as well as a venue for excitement, adrenaline and
the latest in the art world is discussed.

Antik A.fi. started out in the business with antiques. Today they organize
auctions for various items including classic automobiles, wine and many
other areas of interest. Established in 1987 by the Artam family, Antik A.fi.
is one of the most important auction houses in Turkey; they also have
a catalogue, which is also a rarity. Founder Turgay Artam and his son
Olgaç Artam feature primarily Turkish and Ottoman paintings, famous
pieces of writing, modern takes on pieces from the Ottoman era, silver and

de¤il çünkü…
Bizimki gibi hamaseti yüksek; onurlanma,
böbürlenme gibi duygular›n yüksek oldu¤u yerlerde
savafla giden herkes kahramanm›fl gibi bir yak›flt›rma
yap›l›yor. Böyle diyenleri de k›nam›yorum. Sonuç
olarak benim yaflam›mda paparazilik de, 3 günlük
futbol muhabirli¤i de, bir albüm için yapt›¤›m
hayvanlarla ilgili çekimlerim de var. K›sacas›
herfleyi yapt›m ama bizim ülkemizde kahramanl›k
hikayelerinin biraz fazla talep görmesi ya da
insanlar›n korktuklar› fleyleri yapan insanlar›
kahraman gibi gördüklerinden beni daha çok böyle
adland›rmaya merakl› olduklar›n› düflünüyorum.
Ben temel olarak insan olmak istiyorum.

Was the decision to become a war photographer a
difficult one? Life is hard as it is, already…
In a country like ours where honor, arrogance and
heroism are valued, everyone who goes to war is
considered a hero. And I can’t blame people like this. At
the end of the day, the way I make my living means my
portfolio might include paparazzi shots, 3-day football
reporting or even animal photoshoots. In short, I’ve done
many things in my career; however, the fact that our
country loves hero stories makes people quick to label me
a certain way. I just want to be a human being, first.
During battle, are there ever any times where
there is a really horrific sight in front of you,
and instead of taking a photo, you instinctively
help out first? Or perhaps you have another
interesting story?
During war you will face situations like this whether
you want it or not. There were times I had to remain
cool under the circumstances to get my shot, and times
when I couldn’t and just broke down crying. There
was one time in particular where I was called a hero
by one of the local newspapers without my knowledge.
During an attack in Lebanon, I saved a man.
Of course I wasn’t there to save anyone, rather my
instincts and vicinity allowed me to open the car door
and save the injured man inside. I only realized what
it must have looked like afterwards; I’m not some
hero. The other event was something every reporter
thinks about but can’t imagine happening. I was
a witness to a plane being hijacked in 1980.
I even interviewed the hijackers. We were captive in
the plane for around 12 hours. After this we were
allowed to leave the plane and I was placed under
surveillance. This is how I came about my stay at
the Diyarbak›r Cezaevi (prison).
Can you tell us about creating Iz TV?
I started this project with my friends from the news
program I worked for. We used to run into many

araban›n kap›s›n› aç›p yaral›y› d›flar› çekmiflim.
Görüntüleri görünce farkettim, yani ben kahraman
de¤ilim. Bir di¤eri ise her gazetecinin kafas›ndan
geçip de hayata geçiremedi¤i bir olayd›. 1980 y›l›nda
bir uçak kaç›rma olay›na bafl›ndan sonuna kadar
tan›k oldum. Hava korsanlar›yla röportaj yapt›m.
Ortalama 12 saat uça¤›n içinde mahsur kald›k.
Bu süre sonunda d›flar› ç›kmam›za izin verildi ve
ç›kar ç›kmaz göz alt›na al›nd›m. 1980 Diyarbak›r
Cezaevi’yle tan›flma f›rsat›n› böyle buldum.
‹z TV’yi kurma serüveninizden bahseder
misiniz?
Haberci program›n› birlikte yapt›¤›m arkadafllar›mla
böyle bir giriflimimiz oldu. Eskiden Türkiye’de
belgesel yaparken çok büyük zorluklar çekiyorduk.
Belgeseli yay›nlatacak kanal bulamamak bir yana,
yay›nlatmak için üstüne para bile veriyorduk.
Keflke bir belgesel kanal› olsayd› da yapt›¤›m›z
belgeselleri yay›nlayabilseydik derken arkadafllar›m›z
yay›nc› firmayla konuflup böyle bir kanal›n
kuruluflunda destek alm›fllar. Daha sonra ben
ça¤r›ld›m ve kanal›n koordinatörlük görevini
üstlendim. Dünyada bir ilki yapt›k çünkü belgeselin
ceza gibi görüldü¤ü, desteklenmedi¤i bir toplumda
–ülkede demiyorum çünkü ülkenin toplumu bunu
belirliyor- böyle bir kanal olur mu, olmaz m› diye
iddiaya girdik ve kazand›k.
Türkiye’deki belgeselcilik sizce ne noktada?
‹zleyici, ‹z Tv ile belgesel izlemeye bafllad›
deniyor, kat›l›yor musunuz?
Ben buna kat›lm›yorum çünkü Türkiye gibi
70 milyon nüfusa sahip bir ülkede, dünya ile
k›yaslad›¤›n›z zaman ihtiyaç duymaktan
bahsediyorum. Sadece belgesel de¤il, okumaya
ihtiyaç duymak, merakl› olmak, ö¤renmeye istekli
olmak gibi fleylerin emaresinin okunmad›¤›
ülkemizde ne yaz›k ki belgesel izleyicisi de o kadar
düflük. ‹nsanlar›m›z bedelini düflünmeksizin
bir gecede zengin olmay› planl›yorlar.
Dolay›s›yla böyle bir ülkede belgeselcili¤e
soyunmak Don Kiflotçuluk oynamak gibi bir durum.
Vazgeçemeyecekleriniz var m›?

difficulties when filming documentaries in Turkey.
We couldn’t find a channel to run the documentary,
or we were asked to pay to have it aired. One day we
had the idea to start a documentary channel so we
could air our own productions and one of my friends
just happened to meet with a producer who ended up
supporting our project. Then I was invited to be the
channel’s coordinator. It was the first time in the
world that a channel was created for something that is
seen as a punishment and not supported by the
people- I’m not saying country but rather people,
because they are the ones who make these decisions.
We gambled on whether something like this would
work and we won.
Where would you say documentary filmmaking
is at today in Turkey? People have shown a
greater interest in them thanks to Iz TV, would
you agree?
I don’t agree with this statement because I’m talking
about comparing our country of 70 million with the
rest of the world. It’s not just documentaries, but the
fact that people in our country don’t feel the need to
read, aren’t curious and don’t want to learn, are
symptoms of the problem. There are so few interested
in watching documentaries. Our people dream of
becoming rich overnight. There’s so little interest in
documentary filmmaking in this country that it’s
almost as absurd an ambition or desire as wanting to
be Don Quixote.

Sizden belgesel, sergi, TV program› bekliyorduk
da yemek kitab› beklemiyorduk. Nereden ç›kt›
bu proje? Biraz kitab›n›z› tan›t›r m›s›n›z?
Yemekle çok hafl›r neflir bir insan›m. Çocuk
denilebilecek bir yaflta tek bafl›ma yaflamay›
ö¤rendi¤imden, bu süre boyunca tatlar› buluflturmay› baflard›m. Mesela hofluma gitmeyen yemekler
vard› ve çeflitli deneylerle onlar› nas›l sevebilece¤imi
ö¤rendim. P›rasay› önce bol limonla piflirmeye
çal›flt›m, ard›ndan do¤ray›p kad›n budu köftenin
içine koymay› denedim ama bunlar hep sevmedi¤im
yeme¤i neden sevmedi¤imi ö¤renmek ad›na yap›lan
deneylerdi. Kitapta da Anadolu mutfa¤›n›n evimize
getirdi¤i zenginli¤i anlatmaya çal›flt›m. Mesela
annem Siirtli ama kökeninin bir taraf› Karadeniz’e
dayan›yor, ailemize Orta Anadolu’dan, Ege’den
gelen akrabalarla da sofram›z oldukça zenginleflti ve
bu kitap da böylece ortaya ç›kt›.
En çok sevdi¤iniz yemek ne?
Annemin yemeklerini, özellikle de çorbas›n›
gitti¤im her yerde arar›m. Gerçi o yemekleri de ben
yapabiliyorum ama bizim gibi ülkelerde her çocu¤un
kafas›nda bir “anne lezzeti” vard›r. Ben de o yüzden
en çok annemin yemeklerini seviyorum.

Yemek zorunda kald›¤›m fleyler oldu elbette. Nas›l
ki Gaziantep’te yap›lan katmeri yemek zorundaysam,

What can you not live without?
I’m the head of my family and I have a daughter
whom I love dearly. My biggest passion is my family
unfortunately I’m not able to spend as much time with
them as I’d like, and this upsets me. Outside of my
work travels and social responsibility projects, I enjoy
spending as much time as I can with my family.
We would expect a documentary, exhibit or even
TV program from you, but not a cookbook. How
did this project come about? Can you tell us about
your book?
I’m someone who loves food. I started living on my
own at an age when I was still a child, really, and
since then have been combining flavors. For example,
there were dishes that I didn’t like, and after some
experimenting I found a way to like them. I first tried
to cook leeks with lots of lemon, and then sliced it
and stuffed it into ‘kad›n budu köfte’ (meat and rice
croquettes) but both of these experiments were done so
I could figure out a way to enjoy leeks. In the book
I try to explain the richness brought to our kitchens
from the Anatolian kitchen. For example my mother
is from Siirt but her roots go back to the Black Sea;
our meals were always much riches thanks to our
family from Central Anatolia and the Aegean and in
this book is a result of these experiences.
What are your favorite foods?
My mothers food, in particular her soups are my
favorite. When it comes down to it, I can make
most of the dishes she makes; however, in countries
like ours, there is something called ‘anne lezzeti’
(mom’s flavor), which is why I love my mother’s
dishes the most.

Bilindi¤i üzere gerek ritüel amaçl› gerekse ihtiyaçtan
insan eti yeme dünyada hep vard›. Papua Yeni
Gine’nin ‹rian Jaya bölgesinde yaflayan Korowai
kabilesini ziyaret edece¤imiz zaman bölge hakk›nda
ald›¤›m›z duyumlar pek de iyi de¤ildi. Yerel rehbere
sordu¤umuzda ise çevrede görülen kufl türlerinin
ve bir tür a¤ac›n içinde bulunan kurtlar›n
azalmas›n›n bölgede insan eti yemenin yeniden
bafllam›fl olabilece¤i cevab›n› ald›k. Bölgeye giderken
do¤al olarak öyle bir korkuyu tafl›d›m ancak
kendimizi garantiye almak için yan›m›zda bir domuz
götürdük ve görüflmeyi o flekilde gerçeklefltirip
sa¤salim geri dönmeyi baflard›k. Tabii karfl›l›¤›nda
sunulan maymunu da geri çeviremedik.
Seyahat etmek size ne ifade ediyor?
Ben düfllerinde de seyahat eden bir insan›m.
Dünya üzerinde gitmedi¤im yer kalmad› diyebilirim.
Dokunmad›¤›m co¤rafya, dokunmad›¤›m kültür
çok az kald›. fiimdi düflünüyorum da, bunlar›
yaparken doktor, pilot gibi farkl› kimliklerle
yapmak isterdim.

Gezginler Kulübü’nün kuruluflunda yer ald›m.
Türkiye gezgin bir toplum olmad›¤›ndan, hatta
bezgin bir toplum oldu¤undan Haberci’yi bafllatt›¤›m›z y›llarda böyle bir proje ortaya ç›kt›. Yurtd›fl›nda
yaflayan, bat› düflüncesini bilen, okuyan insanlarda
böyle bir merak vard› ve Orhan Kural’›n önderli¤inde ben de bu kulübe destek oldum ancak flu anda
herhangi bir organik ba¤›m yok.

Are there some crazy things you tried while
traveling?
There were things I had to eat, of course. Just as you
are forced to eat ‘katmer’ when in Gaziantep, I had
to eat monkey and dog while with indigenous people
of certain countries. I didn’t say no, but they weren’t
exactly on the top of my list…
What’s it like having to eat monkey?
Whether it be for rituals or out of need, there are
even times human flesh was eaten. While visiting the
Korowai tribe in Papua New Guinea, we found out
some things that weren’t too comforting. According
to our guide, the decline of certain worms in the
trees meant people had turned to cannibalism. When
I traveled to the area, I had this fear inside of me;
however, we took a pig to guarantee that we would
have something to eat. Of course we couldn’t refuse
the monkey that was offered in exchange for the
pig we brought.
What does traveling mean to you?
There isn’t a place I haven’t been to on this earth.
There are few places I haven’t touched, or cultures I
haven’t met. Come to think of it, I would have rather
done these travels as a doctor or pilot.
You are a member of the Travelers Club of
Turkey, right?
I was at the inception of the Travelers Club. We
started this project before Turkey was a country
of travelers- in fact, back when it was a country of
discouraged people. People who lived abroad,
Western-thinking people who read, had this desire
to travel and Orhan Kural was the pioneer in creating
this club and I was a supporter however today I am
not officially tied to the group.
If you could go anywhere today, where would
it be?
I would want to go to North Korea. If we are thinking
rationally, tours arranged with guides are too touristy
for me. If I could go freely on my own, and explore,
North Korea would be the first place on my list.

Iranian Republic, its populace and spoken
language. Even though the city now lacks the luster it
once had when it was home to important poets,
philosophers, warriors, kings and roses, it still merits
attention with its rich cultural heritage.
The entrance portal to Shiraz, the Bâb-› Kur’ân
[Door of the Quran in Arabic], was constructed
approximately a thousand years ago. A khan of the
Zend Dynasty by the name of Kerim, whose family
ruled the center and south of Iran between 1750 and
1794, had placed sections from the Quran in a room
above this portal. This structure, which the Persians
call the Dervâze-i Kur’ân [Door of the Quran in
Persian], therefore received its name from this very act
of patronage. According to popular belief, a traveler
who would embark on his journey through this door
would return safely back to Shiraz. Today, entering
Shiraz through this portal, which was repaired with
the donation of a Shirazi merchant after its collapse
in the 1950s, makes one feel a part of the majesty of
past centuries.
As

eighty villages – and ‘the secret city’ [flehr-i raz].
It is nestled in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains,

city famous for its world-renowned ancient artifacts,

its orchids, oranges and roses. The rose gardens are
widespread all around the city. Especially, the
ten-kilometer route between the city center and
airport, which is lined on both sides with rose
gardens, is a beautiful testament to the fact.
Having lived amidst the sophisticated traditions of a
bustling Shirazi art and culture, artists have produced
works of art in and outside of Iran for many centuries.
The artifacts in Samarkand and India are perhaps
among the best representations of this cultural
exchange. Among them the famous Master Isa, one of
the architects of the Taj Mahal in India, learned and
practiced his craft in Shiraz.
This glorious city, which at one time played various
roles in the important turning points of Middle-Eastern
political history, may not bear its strategic significance
today, but it still requires attention, as it possesses
a rich cultural heritage born out of its centuries-old
history. Information on how and from where today’s
visitor should begin to experience the city is eagerly
provided by its hospitable inhabitants.
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE POET-PHILOSOPHER
Sadi from Shiraz, was a great man of letters and
poet, whose existence will proudly embellish Iranian
culture and literature till time immemorial. His two
works titled Bostan and Gülistan have placed him
alongside Firdawsi, creator of Iran’s epic poem, and
Haf›z-› fiirazi, the passionate Shirazi poet, all three
forming the trifecta of Iranian poetic genius. Iranian
scholars praise Sadi for his ability to point towards
the human spirit through his vast knowledge,
high-powered thinking, and in-depth observational
skills, as well as demonstrate mankind’s vices with
extraordinary success and captivating manner.
The spring located in the garden surrounding Sadi’s
mausoleum is a must-see. Public visits the site on the
last Wednesday of each year and bathe in its waters,
which they believe to have curative powers.
With new landscaping that utilized roses Gülistan has
been even more beautified and has now become an
important visitation site where both the inhabitants
of Shiraz and foreign visitors come to breathe its air.

A GARDEN OF PARADISE: BA⁄-I IREM
Ba¤-› ‹rem is nothing less than a paradise on earth.
It has been said that this lavish corner of Shiraz was
built by the famous Sultan fieddad bin Âd to parallel
the real gardens of paradise. The garden sprawls over
thousands of acres of land on the western side of
Shiraz with a mirrored pavilion in its center. It has
also been said that before the Iranian Revolution
Shah Riza Pehlevi’s mother resided here, and her son
would come here from time to time for some rest.
One of the most attractive and beautiful gardens of
Shiraz, Ba¤-› ‹rem takes its visitors from the
twenty-first century back to bygone eras with its majestic
cypress trees, unique roses and water channels. Among
these cypresses is one that is particular to Shiraz called
the serv-i naz. The tilework on the exterior of the
pavilion that depicts the well-known love stories of
Yusuf and Zuleyha as well as Ferhad and Shirine, and
colorful miniatures allow the visitor to travel back
through time to the epic stories of past centuries.
THE CASTLE OF ORIENTAL TALES:
THE CASTLE OF KERIM KHAN
The Castle of Kerim Khan Zend that rests in the
center of Shiraz was the residence of Kerim Khan
during his rule, as well as the biggest and most
important building of the Zend Empire. The Castle
sprawls over a site of about four-thousand square
meters. Its height reaches twelve meters, its walls are
made of brick and in each of its four corners it has
fourteen-meters high bastions, all of which still
remain intact. Only one of these bastions has a slight
bend that reminds one of the Pisa Tower in Italy. It
has been suggested that twelve-thousand builders
worked on the site during its construction. In the
interior courtyard of the castle one finds citrus trees,
characteristic of the Mediterranean climate. The pools
inside this vast garden, which were indispensable for
the Persian palatial culture, offer visual feasts to
their contemporary visitors.
THE OLD CORE OF THE PERSIAN STATE:
PERSEPOLIS
The center of the Old Persianate Kingdom, the
ceremonial site of the Achaemenid Empire, Persepolis
in Greek means the capital of the Persian lands.
Iranians call this ancient site Taht-› Cemflid, which is
today approximately fifty-five kilometers outside of
Shiraz. With the belief that this large residential
area belonged to a real Persian culture, it was decided

fiiraz flehir merkezindeki Kerim Han Zend Kalesi, saltanat› süresince Kerim Han’›n ikamet
yeri, ayn› zamanda Zend Hanedanl›¤› döneminin en büyük ve en önemli yap›lar›ndan biri.
Kale 4000 metrekareye ulaflan genifl bir alana kurulu. Yüksekli¤i yaklafl›k 12 metreye ulaflan
tu¤ladan yap›lma kale duvarlar› ve dört köflesinde yer alan 14 metre yüksekli¤indeki dört
kale burcu, ilk günkü gibi sapasa¤lam. Sadece bu burçlardan birisi Pisa Kulesi gibi yana
yatm›fl görünüyor. ‹nflas› s›ras›nda 12 bin iflçinin görev ald›¤› rivayet ediliyor.

WINE’S NATIVE COUNTRY
Wine originated in 4000 B.C. in these lands known today as the cradle of civilization. It was
an important theme in mythology, poems and songs. Over time, it was gradually categorized
according to the grapes from which it was sourced. Therefore, like silk, gold, ruby, emerald and
olive oil, it also became a highly valuable product. While debates over which civilization was
the homeland of wine, Shiraz was in the center of wine’s origins. The biggest conflict revolved
around Shiraz for centuries.
The Persian King Cemflid loved grapes. To share his love of grapes with his people,
he constructed massive vineyards. One year, there was a lot more produce than expected, so the
storehouses of the palace was overflowing. In a few months, the grapes get fermented. The
guards don’t touch the bitter fermented liquid thinking that it was toxic. In the meantime, the
ruler’s concubine famous for her legendary beauty was suffering from a severe headache, for
which the doctors cannot find a cure. Finding no relief, she decided to end her life by drinking
this juice. However, instead of killing her, the drink restores her back to health and she feels
her soul rested. She immediately spoke of the incident to Cemflid, who after having tasted the
drink called it the water of life. In the following years, half of the produce of grapes was kept
in the storehouse to convert to wine. Happiness settles in the Persian lands.
With this Persian legend, Iranians maintain that wine was a gift of their kings to this world.
However, the archaeological excavations in Persepolis have shown that heaps of grape seeds
found were dated from before the rule of Cemflid.
In recent years, there is great interest in the Shirazi grapes produced in the vineyards north of
Shiraz, Bagh-e Anar and Bagh-e Takhti, because of their suitable climate. France, Italy and
Australia compete with one another in raising Shirazi grapes in their countries. In the meantime,
grape’s native country Iran has chosen to remain silent due to its current stance against wine.

We departed for the city of Mevlana, Konya, on a
cold, snowy morning in Istanbul. Upon noticing the
traditional feel to the city, it wasn’t hard to guess that
Konya would be the right place for Ottoman desserts.
Dedeman Konya’s experienced chef Ali Murat Dikmen
is personally interested in dessert and thus took the
dishes above and beyond. After a long preparation, the
dishes that were placed in front of us were almost too
beautiful to eat. On top of that, they tasted out of this
world- we were literally transported to the time of the
Ottoman Sultans. We decided the best way for you to
feel what we did, would be to present you with the
recipes for these wonderful traditional desserts. Bon

Preparation of the dough
Combine 50 gr flour and 40 gr
water for the sourdough and
allow to rest at room temperature for 24 hours. Combine the
flour, water, sourdough, wet
yeast and eggs and mix with an
electric beater. After allowing to
rest for 30 minutes, cook both
sides in a crepe pan.
Preparation of thepumpkin
After the pumpkin has been
peeled, place in the oven on a
pan with the sugar and allow to
rest for 30 minutes. Add the
cloves and cover with aluminum
foil. Bake for 2 hours at 250
degrees and allow to cool.
Remove and mash until puree
consistency.
Preparing the sarma (wrap)
Fill the pancakes (lalanga) with
pureed pumpkin and add walnuts. Roll it up and you have
your dessert. Repeat with the
remaining ingredients. Decorate
with powdered sugar and
crushed walnuts. .

Preparation
Place the dried figs in warm
water an hour beforehand, and
then drain and separate. Warm
the milk, and combine half with
the sliced figs and granulated
sugar and bring to a puree with
the blender. Add the remaining
milk and pour into the molds
they will be served in, and allow
to ferment for at least 5 hours at
room temperature. Allow to cool
in the fridge, if you like.
Decorate with cinnamon and
walnuts before serving.

Preparation
The tart dough should be
prepared in advance according
to the pan, and baked for 15
minutes at 180 degrees. Boil
the dried apricots, water and
granulated sugar on the stove.
After it has cooled, blend it until
it has the consistency of a
puree. Place the milk, sugar and
mastic gum into a pot and allow
to simmer on medium heat.
Mix the cornstarch with ? tea
cup cold water and add the egg
yolks. Then mix boiling milk with
the cornstarch and add. Finally
add the pistachios and pour into
the previously prepared tart
mold. Then bake at 200
degrees until the top has
appears golden and toasted,
and serve with the apricot

Preparation
Cut off the ends of the quince,
and slice into two. Then, scoop
out the seeds in the center.
Peel the quince and place in the
pan. After you’ve peeled the
apples, grate them and place the
contents into the scooped out
areas of the quince. Add the
water to the pan and sprinkle
the sugar over the desserts;
for the dessert to become more
jelly-like, add the leftover quince
seeds to the pan. Add the
cloves and cinnamon to the
pan and cover with aluminum foil.
Bake in a pre-heated oven
(250 degrees) for 3.5 hours or
until the quince are red.
For the meringue
Combine the egg white and
sugar in a bowl, and mix slowly
until the two have combined
sufficiently. Then, mix with a
mixer on high until the
consistency is like mousse.
Finally;
Place the quince on the tray they
will be served on, and split into
three equivalent sections.
Then, place some cream on the
quince. Then place another
piece of quince on top, and
decorate with whipped cream
and then use a cooking blowtorch to crisp the tops.

Söz konusu Anadolu, hele ki Orta Anadolu olunca
Kapadokya’n›n tarihinde de bir köklülük ve
hareketlilik söz konusu. Günümüzden 2000 y›l kadar
önce bölgeye yerleflen ve yerli halkla kaynaflarak
Hitit ‹mparatorlu¤u'nu kuran Hititler’i; Frigler,
Kimmerler, Medler ve M.Ö. 547'den itibaren ise
Persler takip ediyor. Roma ‹mparatorlu¤u ikiye
ayr›l›nca, Kapadokya da do¤al olarak Do¤u Roma
‹mparatorlu¤u'nun s›n›rlar› içinde kalm›fl ve
Romal›lar’dan zulüm gören H›ristiyan keflifller
bölgeye gelip kayalara oyulmufl manast›rlarda
gizlenerek ibadetlerine ve faaliyetlerine devam
etmifller. 1082 y›l›nda Kayseri'nin Selçuklular
taraf›ndan fethedilmesi üzerine Kapadokya halk›
huzurlu bir döneme girmifl. 14. yüzy›l›n bafllar›nda
Mo¤ol kökenli ‹lhanl›lar Kayseri'yi ele geçirip, flehri
yak›p y›km›fllar ancak bu durum uzun sürmemifl ve
Osmanl›lar döneminde bölge tekrar rahata
kavuflmufl.
With yellow sunlight stretching for as far as the eye
can see, covering the stone houses and sand colored
hills is the splendor that is Cappadocia. Cappadocia
has become a fairly well known destination thanks to
television series and other advertisements over the past
10 years. The area is rich in history and full of
culture, religion and natural beauty. Underground
churches and even small cities built hundreds of years
ago are just examples of what you can find in
Cappadocia, one of Turkey’s most precious areas.
The unique and aesthetically pleasing scenery
mesmerizes those who visit the area. The region
acquired the name Cappadocia from Farsi, meaning
‘land of the pretty horses’. Famous Greek geographer
Strabo mentioned the area in his work ‘Geographica’
and described the navigation as such: Toros
mountains to the south, Black Sea mountains to the
north, Salt Basins to the west and to the east, the
Euphrates. Surrounding the area are other locations
that all contribute to the rich cultural history of the
region: Avanos, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Göreme, Ortahisar,
Gülflehir, Derinkuyu, Aksaray and the Ihlara Valley.
Tourists seem to flock to this area of the country
because of the many attractions. One that is most
noticeable and admired by many is the Pigeon Valley.
Pigeons were used as a way to deliver messages back
in the day, and the Pigeon Valley is basically
numerous pigeons houses carved into the rock. The
droppings of the pigeons were also used as fertilizer
and fuel. Other attractions are Bible inscription
illustrations done by numerous artists from the 18th
century. These illustrations depict moments throughout
history and also teach viewers about Islamic art.

specifically the mid-Anatolian
region in particular Cappadocia, has seen many major
events throughout history. First inhabited by the
Hittite Empire, the area then saw migrations of the
Phrygians, the Cimmerians, the Medes and after 547
B.C. the arrival of the Persians. When the Roman
Empire split, Cappadocia became a part of the Eastern
Roman Empire, and the Christians in the area sought
refuge in the rock where they made dwellings to hide
in, and constructed monasteries, churches and the like
to practice their religion. In 1082 the Seljuks from
Kayseri entered the area and brought peace to
Cappadocia peoples. Leaders of Mongolian descent
entered the area and set fire to most of it, leaving it in
ruins during the 14th century; the Ottoman Empire
then rebuilt the city and region.

bölgedeki ocaklardan getirilen kayalarla yap›lan Sar›han Kervansaray› ve Alaaddin Cami;
bunlara uzakl›¤› yaln›zca 20 metre olan Vaftizci Yahya Kilisesi Avanos’un görülmeye de¤er
tarihi eserleri aras›nda bulunuyor. Farkl› dinlere mensup insanlar›n uyum ve hoflgörüyle
yüzy›llar boyunca bir arada yaflad›¤› bölgede 1924 y›l›nda gerçeklefltirilen “mübadele”

K›z›l›rmak’›n eski yataklar›ndan elde edilen killi toprak, Avanos’ta Hititler’den beri

atölyelerinden birine u¤ray›p al›flverifl yapman›z› tavsiye ederiz.
Explorations
Cappadocia has so many unusual and exciting sites to see that it can be hard to know where
to start, or even what takes priority. The landscape is also so unusual that you’ll feel as if
you’ve landed onto another planet; the city has often been referred to as an “open-air
museum.” Christians once heavily populated the region, and sites such as the Dark Church,
El Nazar Church, Snake Church, Diamond Church, and Eskigümüfl monastery are packed
each season with tourists. Many symbolic artifacts and findings from Christian history can be
found here and lighting a candle for the baby Jesus, Virgin Mary, and other saints and
religious figures in the gloomy and dark churches is not out of the ordinary.
Also to be explored in the region is K›z›l›rmak, a river with red water due to the clay it
deposits. Avanos lies along the banks of this river and is an important part of Anatolian
history, responsible for most of the pottery production. During the time of the Seljuk Empire,
hearths made from the rock carvings, two of which should be seen are the Sar›han
Kervansaray› and the Alaaddin Cami. A mere 20 km away from these sites is the Vaftizci
Yahya Church. In 1924, during the “exchange” in the area, Christian groups left the region
and went elsewhere. Remains from the Christian religion are plentiful here. There are many
clay pottery workshops in the area and it might be worth checking out during your visit,
you could bring home a piece of artwork made by hand with clay from the river.
Çavuflin, located 18 km. from Nevflehir on the Avanos road, is also quite attractive.

This old settlement center is
located around a giant boulder
that first cracked and then was
demolished, giving it a wholly
creepy atmosphere. The entrance
to the Ak Valley, which is home
to one of nature’s most
incredible views, is a mere
500 meters from Cavusin.
The Ak Valley is significant for
the unique view of the fairy
chimneys it provides. The
journey from Cappadocia to Ak
Valley takes about 2.5-3 hours;
however, it is a pleasant one, as
the roads are paved with
vineyards, apricot trees and
other interesting creations of
nature. Another alternative for
those who would like to be one
with nature is Zelve. Nature
hikes, bike tours and horseback
riding are just a few of the
activities you can enjoy in
Zelve. While there, you must
check out the churches and
labyrinths situated high up on
the boulders. Another unique
area is Ortahisar, which is
famous for its natural drinking
waters and mineral waters.
The giant fairy chimney known
as the Ortahisar Castle, located
in the center of the district is
popular among tourists, possibly
because it resembles a chateau.
It’s a bit difficult to get up to
the castle, but once you have,
you will enjoy one of the most
beautiful panoramic views of
Cappadocia available.
The most exciting area of
Cappadocia, both during the
day and at night, would have to
be Ürgüp. In addition to carpet
and gift stores, this area
capitalized on the booming
tourism in the area by creating
vineyards and selling wine. After

No matter where you are in the world, one of the best
ways to get to know an area is by the local outdoor
market. The outdoor market here occurs in Ürgüp on

The sky is the one place where
there are no limits. Flying over
Cappadocia in a hot-air balloon is

enjoy this no-limits freedom. The
hot-air balloon rides begin in the
early morning, on non-windy days

between a shorter 45-minute ride
and the longer 90 minute ride.

Gaziantep’in Nizip ilçesinde bulunan Zeugma Antik Kenti’nin hikayesi ilginç. Büyük ‹skender’in generallerinden ve
daha sonra Suriye Kral› olan Seleukos Nikator’un kendi ad› ve F›rat Nehri’nin ad›n› birlefltirerek M.Ö. 300 y›l›nda
Seleukos Euphrates ad›nda bir kent kurmas›yla bafllam›fl. Daha sonra Roma hakimiyetine giren kentin ad› de¤iflerek
“köprü” anlam›na gelen ve bütün dünyada bilinen flekliyle “Zeugma” olmufl. Bu dönemde nüfusu 80 bin olan
Zeugma’da F›rat manzaral› villalar, kader tanr›ças› Thyke’ye adanm›fl bir tap›nak ve daha birçok mimari yap› göze
çarp›yor. fiehrin ‹pek Yolu üzerinde olmas› nedeniyle artan refah seviyesi sonucu kendi flehir sikkesini basan Roma
kentleri aras›na girmesi çok da zor olmam›fl. Bugün Zeugma antik kentine gidenler, flehrin sular alt›nda oldu¤unu

The story of Zeugma, located in the
Nizip district of Gaziantep is rather
interesting. The city was originally
founded as a Greek settlement by
Seleucus I Nicator, one of the
generals of Alexander the Great,
in 300 BC, and named after
himself. Only later in 64 BC when
the city was conquered by the
Roman Empire did it later become
Zeugma, meaning ‘bridge-passage’
or ‘bridge of boats’ for the boats
that passed through there. At that
time the population was 80.000.
Because the city was located on
the Silk Road, it was a big
attraction in the region. Today,
those who visit might feel
nostalgic because it is covered in
water; however, the feeling of the
environment, the ambience, is
enough to make you realize what
it was then. The amazing mosaics
excavated including the ‘Gypsy
Girl’ can be seen in the Zeugma
Mosaic Museum.

Galatasaray Lisesi’ni Tünel’e do¤ru geçtikten sonra sa¤da Orhan Adli Apayd›n
Sokak’›n giriflinde, köfledeki bina Borusan Müzik Evi. Bugüne kadar Türkiye’de
klasik müzi¤in geliflmesi için birçok proje gerçeklefltiren Borusan’›n son ç›k›fl›...
1875 y›l›nda Frans›z bir mimar taraf›ndan infla edilen bina ‹stiklal Caddesi
boyunca uzanan tarihi mimariyi yans›t›yor.
Binan›n restorasyonunu New York ve ‹stanbul merkezli GAD Mimari firmas›
üstlendi. Çal›flmalar 2006’da bafllad›. Tarihi doku korundu, iç dekorasyonda ise
ça¤dafl bir müzik ve sanat mekan›n›n sahip olmas› gereken çok fonksiyonlu,
esnek bir yap› oluflturuldu.
Bir müzik evi için çok önemli olan ‘akustik düzen’ burada kurulurken ‹TÜ
Mimarl›k Fakültesi Ö¤retim Üyesi Y›ld›z Sey’den yard›m al›nd›. Ayr›ca Borusan
‹stanbul Filarmoni Orkestras› Onursal fiefi Gürer Aykal ile Sanat Yönetmeni
ve Sürekli fiefi Sascha Goetzel’den de fikir al›nd›. Binan›n duvarlar›nda ve

ve ifllevsel di¤er ayr›nt›lar da düflünüldü: Binayla uyumlu fleffaf asansörle ikinci
kata piyano tafl›nabiliyor. Merdivenlere yerlefltirilen çelik malzeme binan›n
›fl›¤›n› vurguluyor. Cam separatörler ve kal›n perdeler yank›y› önlüyor. Alt›
katl› binan›n ana girifli ‹stiklal Caddesi taraf›ndan. Binan›n Piremeci Sokak ile
kesiflen ikinci bir kap›s› daha var. ‹stiklal Caddesi ile birleflen girifl kat›n›n
cephesindeki yekpare cam, içerdeki etkinliklerin d›flar›dan rahatça izlenmesine
olanak veriyor. Sergi alan› olarak tasarlanan girifl kat› farkl› etkinlikler için de

Sokak off ‹stiklal Caddesi,
‹stanbul, January 8, 2010.
As you go down from Galatasaray
Lisesi on your way to Tünel, turn
onto Orhan Adl› Apayd›n Sokak, and
to your right you’ll see the Borusan
Music House. Responsible for
countless projects that have taken
place in Turkey, focused on enlarging
Classical music within Turkish
culture, Borusan can now house all
the projects under one roof. The
building- built in 1875- was
constructed by a French architect and
was restored by GAD, an architecture
company based in ‹stanbul and New
York. The restoration process started
in 2006, and the historical elements
of the building were kept in tact; the
interior design of the building
was drastically changed so that it
could accommodate more people,
and in a larger space. The acoustic
architecture of a building is a very
important aspect of a music house,
‹stanbul Technical University student
Y›ld›z Sey stepped in, as member of
the Architecture Student Faculty
team, to perfect it. The Borusan
Philharmonic Orchestra’s honorary
Chief Conductor Gürer Aykal along
with Artistic Director and Principle
Conductor Sascha Goetzel had a
large role to play in this design as
well. The walls and the basement of
the building were designed in
accordance with what would be
needed for acoustic playing to be
delivered to listeners comfortably.
The Borusan Music House is
appropriate for all types of musical
performances and rehearsals because
of its unique and organized design.
This was noticed by musician Faz›l
Say, who spoke very positively about
Borusan! The visual and functional
restoration process of the house had

eserleri dikkat çekiyor. Ortaya konan müzik
ile görsel sanatlar aras›ndaki birliktelik mutlaka
görülmeli. Büyük bölümü Müzik Evi için özel
olarak tasarlanm›fl olan ça¤dafl sanat eserleri,
ünlü Bauhaus’lu sanatç› László Moholy-Nagy’›n
1925 y›l›nda özetledi¤i “renk yerine ›fl›k, statik
yerine kinetik” kavram›n›n güncel yorumu olarak
de¤erlendiriliyor. Çal›flmalar›n› New York’ta
sürdüren Leo Villareal’in Müzikevi’nin tüm
katlar›na yay›lan ›fl›k yerlefltirmesi, ak›c›
renkleriyle, ‹stiklal Caddesi’nin hareketli
yaflam›na bir gönderme… Viyana’l› Brigitte
Kowanz’›n ‘Ad Infinitum’ heykelinde kullan›lan
neon ve ayna yaflam›n ak›c›l›¤›n› vurgularken,

kültür sanat etkinli¤inin mekan› olacak bir müzik
evi buras›. 8 Ocak 2010’da aç›l›fl› Mercan
Dede dinletisiyle yapan Müzik Evi’nin

is made from a clear glass and is sturdy enough to
transport a piano to the second floor. The steel on
the stairs inside the building picks up rays of light
and illuminates the inside and glass dividers and
thick curtains help to block out noise traffic inside
the building. This 6-storey building’s front
entrance lets you right off onto ‹stiklal Caddesi.
There is also another entrance to the building,
which leads you onto Piremeci Sokak. The ‹stiklal
Caddesi entrance is encompassed in glass, making it
possible to view the indoor concerts from the
outside! The entrance floor was designed to be an
exhibition gallery, however, it can also be used for
other things, like concerts. The Music House hosts
the Ça¤dafl Sanat Sergisi which can be viewed here
everyday of the week except for Sundays. The
concert halls located on the 3rd and 4th floors
have 140 seating sections, with 60 balcony locations, holding a capacity of 200.
Famous musicians, artists and musical communities
from Turkey are showcased here 3 days of the week,
performing classic music, jazz, world music and
modern dance concerts. Chamber music is very
popular at Borusan, and the artists are encouraged
to give concerts and contribute to other projects.
The 4th floor of the music house has rehearsal
rooms where the Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra
will start to rehearse in the upcoming months.
The Borusan Music House also organizes many
parties on the 5th and 6th floors, which are
usually accompanied by chamber music
performances. Because the Borusan Music House is
so invested in spreading classical music and its
culture, all students receive 10% off on tickets.
Past the 6th floor, continuing up the stairs will
lead you onto the viewing terrace. Venturing up to
the terrace is a wonderful opportunity to glance out
onto the amazing view of ‹stanbul. During the
‹stanbul 2010 European Capitol of Culture,
Borusan will continue to act as both a music house
and an art center. The art at Borusan attracts as
many viewers as the music; now the two components
of Borusan go hand-in-hand. In 1925 Bauhaus
artist László Moholy-Nagy said “instead of color
there is light, instead of static there is kinetics”
which is exactly what Borusan captures in its
combinations of art and music. The spacious floor
planning design-made especially for viewers to have
extraordinary experiences, and the value Borusan
has added to the city’s culture are reasons why the
Borusan Music House has become an important
symbol of progress in ‹stanbul.
New York based designer Leo Villareal created light
installations that decorate and illuminate each
floor of the Music House, which remind us of the
bright lights and excitement of ‹stiklal Street.
Vienna based designer Brigitte Kowanz’s ‘Ad
Infinitum’ sculpture makes use of neon and mirrors.
Christian Partos’ kinetic piece is attached to the
ceiling, adding lots more excitement to the
space. Ivan Navarro’s light sculpture pulls those
around into its atmosphere. From classic music to
jazz, modern dance to theater, modern art to
atelier workshops, this venue will be home to many
culture and art events.
Mercan Dede played at the opening, which took
place on 8 January 2010. The schedule is
already packed with performers such as The
Austrian Baroque & Nuria Rial Sweet Stillness
and Gentle Spring, Hezarfen Ensemble, fiirin

The first thing that comes to mind when one
thinks of Borusan is classic music.
hat should we think when we hear Borusan
Music House?
Is the Borusan Music House the result of
focused work, as in the natural progression of
your work and effort?
The Borusan Music House’s architecture combines
modern architecture with 19th century
architecture. This synergy is in the spirit of the
building. Thus, the season program aims to bring
together events that will please art lovers from
various disciplines.
The Borusan Music House is one of the projects
under the umbrella of the Borusan Kocab›y›k
Trust. Borusan ‹stanbul Philharmonic Orchestra,
Borusan Stringed Instruments Quartet Music
Library, Art Center, Ertu¤ Kocab›y›k
Publications…these are just some of the projects
created by Borusan to develop the arts and music
in this country. Borusan Music House is just one of
these projects.
Why did you choose Beyo¤lu as the location?
What do you hope the location will bring to the
Music House?
Borusan Music House is located in Asmal› Mescit,
which has become the center of art and culture in
‹stanbul over the last few years. You can’t separate
a building from its surrounding. The Music
House gets its energy and spirit from the area.
The Music House will add to the cultural life
of the area.
Of course classic music is one of Borusan Music
House’s key components. Chamber music concerts
and recitals will take place frequently. However,
there will also be events focused on the other
branches of music. Jazz, world music concerts and
modern dance and ballet performances will also
take place.
So it looks like the Music House won’t just be
limited to music, but that there will be exhibits,
dance performances and even art exhibits.
How was this decided upon?
Is the schedule set in stone or might there be
some unexpected changes to it?
Our January-February programs have been
decided upon. As for the upcoming months, we are
looking at different events.
Can you tell us a little about the Borusan
Music House’s technical makeup? What
specialties does it have?
The Borusan Music House is a 6-storey building.
The entrance floor will always have modern
art in it. The second and third floors are for a
concert hall with a capacity of 200. The fourth
floor consists of for rehearsal rooms.
Will the events be music heavy? How can we
find out about the events?
Of course they will be music heavy but not solely
music events. During January and February,
Ayd›n Teker’s ‘Hars’ dance performance was and
will be shown.
Are the rehearsal rooms for BIFO only?
How can we watch these?
BIFO will have some of its rehearsals here.
BIFO classic card members will be able to listen to
these rehearsals.
‹stiklal Street is crowded and very loud…what
sorts of considerations were made for this?
So that those practicing could do so easily?
During the restoration of the Borusan Music
House, sound isolation (sound proofing) was
given maximum attention. The windows were
specially created. Thus, the concert halls
are quiet enough that a CD could even be
recorded in them.

The Anfafl Fair center hosted the 21st annual International
Accommodation, Hospitality, Catering Equipment and Decoration
Trade Fair between 20-23 January 2010. The Anfafl Hotel Equipment
Fair separately organized an “International Golden Capped Chefs
Competition,” where Dedeman Antalya chefs like Aziz Yanardag
(Junior Sous Chef), Coflkun Sorguç (Demi Chef-Türkuaz) and Mehmet
Sar›bafl (Demi Chef- So¤uk Mutfak) all participated. Dedeman Antalya
General Manager Orhan Koral, Food & Drink Manager Murat Y›lmaz
Zeren, Executive Chef Kevin McIntyre, Banquet Manager Serbülent Ifl›k
and Marketing Communications Manager Banu Tonguç were all
extremely supportive of this event. Many different tastes from the
Dedeman Antalya menus such as Lagos wrapped in pumpkin, avocado
sauced steak on top of mushroom oysters, and a chocolate plate with
Camembert cheese, impressed the judges.

Dedeman Toplulu¤u’nun kurucusu Mehmet Kemal Dedeman’›n an›s›n› yaflatmak üzere,
2009’da 6.s› düzenlenen “Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Araflt›rma ve Gelifltirme Proje
Yar›flmas›’n›n ödül töreni Dedeman ‹stanbul’da gerçeklefltirildi. Türkiye’deki madencilik ve
turizm sektörlerini ortak bir platformda buluflturarak yap›c› bir rekabet ortam› yaratan ve bu
alan›n geliflimine katk›da bulunmak amac›yla yap›lan yar›flma sonucunda dereceye giren projelerin
ödülleri sahiplerini buldu. Turizm dal›nda birinci olan projenin ödülü Kültür ve Turizm Bakan›
Ertu¤rul Günay taraf›ndan takdim edildi. 12 fiubat Cuma akflam› Dedeman ‹stanbul’da
gerçekleflen ödül törenine yar›flmac›lar›n yan› s›ra sektörün de¤erli isimleri de kat›ld›. Ayr›ca
Mehmet Kemal Dedeman’a ait sözler ve görsellerin oldu¤u özel bir sergi haz›rland›.
Dedeman Holding Yönetim Kurulu Baflkan› Murat Dedeman, davetlilere hitaben gerçeklefltirdi¤i konuflmas›nda Cumhurbaflkan› Abdullah Gül’den gelen mektubu da okudu. “Mehmet
Kemal Dedeman Araflt›rma ve Gelifltirme Proje Yar›flmas›”na verdi¤i önemi belirten
Cumhurbaflkan› Gül’ün mektubunun ard›ndan Dedeman Holding Yönetim Kurulu Baflkan Vekili
Nazire Dedeman Ça¤atay bir konuflma gerçeklefltirdi. 2010 y›l›n›n proje konular›n› da aç›klayan
Nazire Dedeman Ça¤atay, kürsüyü Kültür ve Turizm Bakan› Ertu¤rul Günay’a devretti. Bakan
Günay, Türkiye’ye kaliteli otelcilik anlay›fl›n› ilk kez getiren ve yerel bir markay› uluslararas›
platforma tafl›yan Dedeman Toplulu¤u’nun bu projesini büyük takdirle karfl›lad›¤›n› belirterek,
madencilik ve turizm sektörlerinde yeni projelerin ödüllendirilmesinin, Mehmet Kemal
Dedeman’› anman›n en güzel yolu oldu¤una inand›¤›n› belirtti. Mehmet Kemal Dedeman’›n,

The exhibition that was filled with Mehmet Kemal
Dedeman's words and images was interesting.
The 6th annual “Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Research and Development Project” competition was
held at Dedeman ‹stanbul. This competition was initially designed to honor the founder of the
Dedeman Group. Turkey’s mining and tourism sectors were combined to compete for prizes,
by demonstrating the best research and development in their sector.
The Culture and Tourism Minister presented the first place prize, which the tourism sector won.
The competition took place on Friday 12 February evening at Dedeman ‹stanbul, with many guests from
both sectors present to support their colleagues. There was also a special presentation that was filled with
Mehmet Kemal Dedeman’s words and images. The Dedeman Holding Chairman Murat Dedeman also
read out a special letter that was sent from the president Abdullah Gül, who had written saying how
much he supported the competition. Subsequent to Murat Dedeman’s speech, the Dedeman Holding Vice
Chairman Nazire Dedeman Ça¤atay also gave a special speech. Following the speech, where new
topics for 2010 were introduced and explained, Nazire Dedeman Ça¤tay allowed Culture and Tourism
Minister Ertu¤rul Günay to continue. Minister Günay showed his appreciation for the Dedeman
Group, by pointing out that Dedeman Hotels truly understand quality hotel management, which has
led them to expand globally. He also stated that this competition was in memory of Mehmet Kemal
Dedeman was an extremely effective way to encourage the tourism and mining sectors to grow
and flourish. Minister Günay concluded his speech by declaring how important it was that everybody
respects and learns from Mehmet Kemal Dedeman’s words.
During the ceremony, the topics for the 7th annual Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Research and Development
Project competition were declared. Thus, in the mining category, “Turkish Mining Development Projects”
and for tourism, “Tourism Destination Development Projects” were nominated.

yönetmenin karfl›laflmas›

Tam karfl›mdayd›. Az konufluyor çok direktif veriyordu. Ekibinin devaml› yer de¤ifltirmesini istiyor, kameraman›n›
terletiyor, model olarak kulland›¤› ›fl›kç›s›n› kald›r›mda bir afla¤› bir yukar› koflturuyordu. ‹nanam›yordum; vizeler kaç›rmak
u¤runa gitti¤im film festivallerinden birinde görüp akl›mdan ç›kmayan o muhteflem filmin, “fiarküteri”nin içimdeki efsanevi
yönetmeni tam karfl›mdayd› – sanattan uzaklafl›r›m diye kabul etmek için günlerce düflündü¤ümün yeni iflimin hem de ilk
haftas›nda, hayat böyledir iflte, sürprizlerle doludur...
Ç›¤l›k atarak ofise kofltum: “Jeunet gelmifl inanam›yorum!” diye ba¤›rd›m tiz bir sesle... Eski iflyerimde bu cümle gerçek
bir sars›nt› yarat›rd›; burada ise ne dedi¤ime anlam veremeden yüzüme bakan 15 suratla karfl›laflt›m. Hani, dedim,
“fiarküteri”, “Kay›p Çocuklar fiehri”...?? Umutsuzlu¤a kap›ld›m. Beynimde bir flimflek çakt›; “Amélie!” dedim. Art›k bunu
bilirler, umuduyla. Ufaktan bir m›r›lt› oldu...yine sonuçsuz. Vazgeçip soka¤a kofltum.
Paris’e gitti¤imde tesadüfe bak›n, mini bir Jeunet festivali vard› kenar mahalle sinemalar›n›n birinde. Eyfel’i Luvr’› b›rak›p
hemen o sinemaya koflmufltum – Eyfel beklerdi, Jeunet beklemez... Paris seyahatim herhalde onunla bafllad›¤›ndan,
unutulmayacak büyüde geçmiflti. On güne bir sürü müze, galeri, kahve, film s›¤d›r›p, üstüne bir de afl›k olmufl, sonra sekiz
günlük sevgilimi orac›kta, kendi Paris’inde, heykellerinin aras›nda b›rak›p ‹stanbul’a dönmüfltüm. “Baharda Paris bir
baflka güzeldir,” demiflti sekiz günlük sevgilim. Ne klifle yarabbim, diye düflünüp bir fley dememek için dudaklar›m›
büzmüfltüm ama bir gün sonra yalan söylemedi¤ini anlad›m: Baharda Paris’te baflka bir fley yap›lmaz, film seyredilir kahve
içilir galeri gezilir ve afl›k olunurdu!!

meets big director

He was just in front of me. Talking less, giving orders more. Constantly moving his crew, sweating the cameraman, making his
lighting technician whom he used as a model, run on the pavement up and down. I couldn’t believe that! The –for me legendary- director of “Delicatessen”, the film for which I skipped the mid-terms was just standing there. And it was the first week
of my new job on which I meditated about accepting or not for days for the risk of becoming distanced from arts. This is life,
full of surprises...
I ran to the office, screaming. “Jeunet is here, I can’t believe it” I cried with a squeal. This statement would make a real jolt
at my old place but I met 15 blank faces here. I said, “Delicatessen?”, “The City of Lost Children?. It was hopeless.
Then something switched on in my brain and I said “Amelie!”. This would have told something leastwise. A vague muttering...
fruitless. I gave up and ran to the street.
To my luck, there was a mini Jeunet festival on one of the suburb theaters of Paris when I went there. Putting aside Eiffel
and Louvre, I rushed to that theatre. Eiffel can wait but Jeunet can’t… Maybe because it started with him, my Paris trip had
been an unforgettable dream. I fitted a number of museums, galleries, coffee shops and films in 10 days. Moreover, I had fell in
love and left my 8 days lover there in his Paris among the statues and came back to Istanbul. I pursed my lips then, thinking
such a cliché it was but I understood the other day that he wasn’t lying: You can only see movies, drink coffee, visit galleries
and fall in love in Paris in spring time and you can do nothing else!!
Forgetting about the meeting, I ran to the street. (I have already said that, except the meeting part.) The film crew was all over
the street and there was a herd of curious people. They were there just out of curiosity. I bet, most of them didn’t know this
legendary man. From machinist to real estate agent, all the men were only focused on the beautiful lighting technician and
her assistant. And I was focused just on him… He was older than me, much older, not handsome indeed. But he was slim,
hearty and his eyes… were the eyes of an artist. It was obvious that he was an introvert, an honest joe. I liked this assumption
for I never like the babbler artists. An artist should keep it to him/herself and give it away in his/her works conscientiously in
time, when that time comes. I was sure he would share my point… just if I could grab his attention, have a word or two…
I understood that it was the Chanel’s latest commercial film they were shooting. This much was not on the newspapers; they
only mentioned that Jeunet would be at Bebek on Tuesday. The new commercial of Chanel was to be shot entirely in Istanbul
and it was going to be released in televisions and theatres worldwide in a year; yet the name of the new face was a top secret.
There were sure a few names speculated on but none of them were certain. There was nothing more than a shared idea that it
was going to be a hard-hitting name as the successor of Nicole Kidman. To me, it didn’t matter. I was just busy with him.
Toplant›y› filan unutup soka¤a kofltum, bunu söylemifltim zaten (toplant› k›sm› hariç). Çekim ekibi tüm soka¤a
yerleflmifl, etraf›n› da pek çok merakl› sarm›flt›, sadece merakl› olduklar›ndan oradayd›lar, ço¤u, kal›b›m› basar›m,
bu efsane adam›n kim oldu¤unu bilmiyordu, tornac›dan emlakç›ya ekibin etraf›na doluflmufl erkeklerin akl› ve
gözleri ise sadece güzel ›fl›kç›yla asistan›n üzerindeydi. Benimkilerse onda... Benden büyüktü, epey büyüktü,
kesinlikle yak›fl›kl› de¤ildi. Ama dinçti, zay›ft› ve gözleri...sanatç› gözleriydi. ‹çine kapan›k, kendi halinde biri
oldu¤u belliydi, bu varsay›m hofluma gitti çünkü sanatç›n›n çok konuflan›n› hiç sevmemiflimdir. Sanatç›lar biraz
içlerinde saklamal›, saklad›klar›n› da zamanla, zaman› gelince eserlerinde ufak ufak, özendire özendire vermelidir.
Eminim o da benim fikirlerimi paylaflacakt›...bir dikkatini çekip yan›na gidebilsem, bir çift laf edebilseydim...

Çekimlerin, Chanel’in yeni reklam filmi için yap›ld›¤›n› etraftaki konuflmalardan anlad›m. Gazetede bu kadar›
yazm›yordu, sadece Jeunet’nin Sal› günü Bebek’te olaca¤› yaz›yordu. Chanel’in yeni reklam filminin tümü
‹stanbul’da geçecekti, bir y›la kadar tüm dünya televizyon ve sinemalar›nda gösterilecekti, fakat yeni yüzün kim
olaca¤› bir devlet s›rr›yd›! Elbette spekülasyonlar›n yap›ld›¤› pek çok isim vard› ama gerçekten kimin yeni yüz
olaca¤› bilinmiyordu. Nicole Kidman’dan sonra yine güçlü bir isim olmas› gerekti¤i düflüncesinden baflka
kimsenin ortak bir fikri yoktu. Benimse umrumda de¤ildi – sadece onunla ilgileniyordum.
Nisan olmas›na ra¤men hava so¤uktu; ifl yerime iki dakika mesafede olan sokak çekiminde onu yakalamak için
trençkotumu bile üstüme almadan f›rlam›flt›m. Bir yandan üflüdü¤üme, öte yandan ve daha önemlisi, herkesin
bana çok ama çok yak›flt›¤›n› söyledi¤i (bir Londra seyahatimde yeni yeni yükselmekte olan bir tasar›mc›dan,
yükseldi¤i zamanlar alamayaca¤›m bir fiyata ald›¤›m) krem trençkotumla burada dikilsem belki üstüme bu giysi
parças›n›n getirdi¤i Frans›z havas›yla (çok insan Frans›z’a benzedi¤imi söylerdi) onun dikkatini çekebilece¤imi
ama art›k bu f›rsat› kaç›rd›¤›ma hay›flan›yordum.
Yine de hiç dikkat çekmeden (kendimce çok cesur bir hareketle) sinsi sinsi öne do¤ru ilerledim. Ad›m ad›m,
minik bedenimi insan boflluklar›ndan içeri s›y›rarak... Birkaç dakika içinde ona neredeyse dokunabilecek kadar
yak›nd›m ve evet, burnum iyi koku al›r ve burun bir parça hayalgücüyle birleflince neler yarat›r, ama adam
düpedüz Paris kokuyordu!! Heyecanland›m, hay›r, kalbim gö¤üs duvar›m› patlatmak üzereydi! fiu an, dedim,
bana tesadüfen dönse, ona söylemek istedi¤im tek fley, “Ben sizin hayran›n›z›m!” demek olur.
Ama son derece flafl›rt›c› bir fley oldu; döndü ve ben hayranl›k cümlemi hayk›rmaya f›rsat bulamadan flaflk›nl›kla
yüzüme bakmaya bafllad›! Gözlüklerinin arkas›ndaki gözlerini kocaman aç›p onlar› k›rpmadan bana bakt›¤›na
inanam›yordum. Durduk. ‹ki Parisli afl›k gibi karfl›l›kl›, öyle, durduk. ‹lk konuflan o oldu: “Amélie Poulain!”
dedi! “Teflekkür ederim Bay Jeunet, ama onun burnu san›r›m yap›l›, benimki orijinal küçük!” dedim.
A¤z›mdan ç›ka ç›ka bu ç›kt›!
Böyle zannettim en az›ndan, yata¤›mda gözlerimi ya¤murlu bir Nisan sabah›na daha açarken...
It was cold for an April day but I had run out of the office which was two minutes away from the set without my
trench coat for the sake of catching him. I was in regret both because of the cold and more importantly because of
the possibility of missing the opportunity of grabbing his attention by standing there with my cream trench coat
which I bought from a rising designer in London for a price that I wouldn’t pay when he gets recognized; a piece
of clothing that became to me and made me look like a French according to everyone.
Nevertheless, (in a very brave move for my part) I advanced towards foreground deviously. Step by step, shaving
my tiny body of the non human cavities… In a few moments, I was close enough nearly to touch him. And yes,
I sniff well. And I know what a smell is capable of when it comes together with imagination. Yet the man sheerly
smelt of Paris! I got excited, no, my hearth was about to blow up my chest! I thought, if he turned to me that
moment, the only thing I wanted to say to him would be “I’m your fan”.
But something very surprising happened. He turned and before I could burst out my admiration statement,
he started to stare at me in astonishment! I couldn’t believe that he was looking at me without blinking his wide
open eyes behind his glasses. We stood there. Like two Parisian lovers, facing one another. He was the first to
talk: “Amélie Poulain!”
“Thank you Monsieur Jeunet but her nose is reshaped; mine is an authentic small!”
That was what came out of my mouth!
At least I thought so, when I was opening my eyes to another rainy April morning…
