MATCH PRESS KIT
Match background
Galatasaray AŞ host Real Madrid CF in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final needing a
remarkable revival to stay in the competition.
• Having lost the first leg 3-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín all on target, Fatih Terim's
hosts have it all to do to reach their first European Cup semi-final in 24 years. For nine-time winners Madrid, meanwhile,
a 24th semi-final appearance is within reach.
Past meetings
• The clubs' three previous encounters before this season all took place in 2000/01, starting with Galatasaray's 2-1
triumph in the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco. Although Raúl González's 79th-minute penalty cancelled out an earlier
Mário Jardel (41) spot kick, Jardel's second goal on 103 minutes secured Galatasaray a second European honour
three months after their UEFA Cup triumph – a first for a Turkish team.
• A Galatasaray side coached by Mircea Lucescu made life awkward for Madrid in the UEFA Champions League
quarter-finals later that season, coming from two goals down to win the first leg 3-2 in Istanbul. Iván Helguera (33)
and Claude Makelele (43) put Madrid ahead but Galatasaray responded through Ümit Davala's penalty (47), Hasan
Şaş (66) and Jardel (75).
• The lineups for that encounter at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on 3 April 2001 were:
Galatasaray: Taffarel, Capone (Fatih Akyel 46), Popescu, Bülent Korkmaz, Ergün Penbe, Okan Buruk, Ümit Davala,
Suat Kaya (Akin Bülent 46), Hagi, Hasan Şaş, Jardel.
Madrid: Casillas, Salgado, Hierro, Karanka, Roberto Carlos, McManaman (Solari 89), Helguera, Makelele (Celades
62), Figo, Raúl, Morientes (Guti 69).
• Vicente del Bosque's Madrid shrugged off that loss with a 3-0 win back in the Spanish capital as Raúl (15, 37) and
Helguera (28) took the defending champions through to a semi-final they would lose against FC Bayern München.
• Iker Casillas and Aitor Karanka, now Madrid's assistant coach, are the only survivors of those games 12 years ago.
Match background
• Madrid won 2-1 at Manchester United FC in the round of 16 and have scored in all 16 UEFA Champions League
away fixtures during José Mourinho's reign, losing just two of them.
• Galatasaray have won just once at home in this season's UEFA Champions League but have suffered only two
reverses in their last 13 European fixtures in Istanbul.
• Galatasaray are competing at this stage for the first time since their 2001 quarter-final against Madrid and are looking
to reach only their second European Cup semi-final; their first came under Mustafa Denizli in 1988/89, when they fell
to FC Steaua Bucureşti. Their record in quarter-final ties is W1 L3.
• Galatasaray have not won at home to Spanish opposition in five attempts since that April 2001 first-leg victory against
Madrid. Their most recent home fixture with Liga visitors came in the 2009/10 UEFA Cup round of 32, when a last-minute
Diego Forlán goal for Club Atlético de Madrid condemned them to a 2-1 reverse and a 3-2 aggregate defeat.
• Overall, Galatasaray's home record against teams from Spain is W5 D2 L5.
• Madrid are aiming for a 24th semi-final appearance and no other club has competed in as many quarter-finals – this
is their 30th and they have won all but six.
• Mourinho has a 100% record in UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, having won at this stage with FC Porto
(2004), Chelsea FC (2005, 2007), FC Internazionale Milano (2010) and his present club in 2011 and 2012.
• Besides their aforementioned encounters with Galatasaray, Madrid's only other experience of Turkish opposition
came in the 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, when they overcame Beşiktaş JK 2-0 at home before
a 1-1 draw in Istanbul.
• Galatasaray have lost away in the first leg in European competition on 19 occasions and only five times did they
recover to win the tie. They have been beaten 3-0 away twice; a 2-0 home win against PSV Eindhoven in the 1987/88
European Champion Clubs' Cup first round was not enough, but in the second round of the same competition the
following season, they pulled off a comeback against Neuchâtel Xamax FC with a 5-0 home success.
• Madrid have gone through in 41 of 54 ties after winning the first leg at home, including all seven when they initially
triumphed 3-0. The largest first-leg advantage they have let slip is two goals, which has happened seven times.

MATCH PRESS KIT
• The last time Madrid lost by three goals or more in UEFA competition was a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool FC in the second
leg of their 2008/09 UEFA Champions League round of 16 duel. Only ten times in their European history have they
lost by a scoreline that would either take this tie into extra time or send Galatasaray through.
• Galatasaray's shoot-out record in UEFA competition is:
4-1 v Arsenal FC, 1999/2000 UEFA Cup final
• Madrid's shoot-out record in UEFA competition is:
1-3 v FC Bayern München, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-finals
3-1 v Juventus, 1986/87 European Cup second round
5-6 v FK Crvena zvezda, 1974/75 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals
Team ties
• Mourinho worked with Didier Drogba at Chelsea from 2004 to 2007 and together they won Premier League titles in
2004/05 and 2005/06. Drogba also played alongside Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Essien at Stamford Bridge.
• Mourinho's only past encounter with a Turkish team came when his Porto side overcame Denizlispor in the fourth
round of their triumphant 2002/03 UEFA Cup campaign, winning 6-1 at home before a 2-2 away draw.
• Terim's record as a coach against Spanish clubs is W3 D2 L5. As Turkey boss, his team succumbed 1-0 to Spain
at the Bernabéu in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match on 28 March 2009. Hakan Balta and substitute Sabri Sarıoğlu
featured for the visitors against a Spain side including Casillas, Raúl Albiol, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso.
• Four days later, on 1 April 2009, Terim's side lost out to Spain again. After trailing to Semih Şentürk's first-half effort
at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, Spain replied through Alonso's 63rd-minute penalty and an added-time winner by Albert
Riera, now a Galatasaray player.
• Terim took Turkey to the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals but only after an opening 2-0 defeat by a Portugal side
featuring Carvalho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, scorer of the first goal. Pepe also registered an own goal when
Portugal lost a home friendly 3-1 to Turkey in June 2012, Umut Bulut twice finding the net.
• Wesley Sneijder spent 2007/08 and 2008/09 at Madrid, scoring 11 goals in 52 Liga appearances. He also won the
2010 UEFA Champions League final at the Bernabéu with Mourinho's Inter. Sneijder was in the Netherlands team
beaten 1-0 by the Spain of Casillas, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos in the 2010 World Cup final.
• Hamit Altıntop made five Liga outings for Madrid last season, scoring once.
• Mesut Özil played with Hamit at Madrid and also at Schalke in 2006/07. Özil has Turkish parents but scored in
Germany's 3-0 win against a Turkey side including Hamit in a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier that featured Sami Khedira.
• Riera faced Madrid seven times in Spanish football with RCD Mallorca and RCD Espanyol, scoring twice and
achieving a creditable record of W3 D2 L2. As a Liverpool player, he was a team-mate of Álvaro Arbeloa and Alonso,
and featured in a 1-0 win at the Bernabéu in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League round of 16.
• Cris went seven UEFA Champions League matches unbeaten against Madrid as an Olympique Lyonnais player –
including a last-16 success in 2009/10 – before a 3-0 away loss in the 2010/11 round of 16.
• Felipe Melo spent four seasons in Spain from 2004 to 2008, playing for Mallorca, Real Racing Club and UD Almería.
He scored for Racing in a 2-1 Liga victory away to Madrid in December 2005.
• Emmanuel Eboué helped Arsenal FC defeat Madrid in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League last 16.
• Johan Elmander scored past Casillas when Sweden beat Spain 2-0 in a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier in October
2006.
• A Benzema penalty earned France a 1-0 home friendly win against Turkey in June 2009.

Galatasaray
UEFA Champions League statistics
• Galatasaray have scored 345 goals in UEFA competition, conceding 349.

following Tuncay Şanlı in Fenerbahçe SK's 3-0 victory at home to Manchester United FC on 8 December 2004.
• Burak's eight goals this season is the best ever return in this competition for a player representing a Turkish club;
Mário Jardel scored six for Galatasaray in 2001/02.
• Galatasaray have scored 11 goals this season, the lowest total among the quarter-finalists. Their 12 goals against
is the highest of the teams still involved.
• Fernando Muslera, Dany Nounkeu and Selçuk İnan have played all 810 minutes of Galatasaray's campaign.
• Galatasaray have committed 135 fouls, more than any other side. Their 23 yellow cards is the joint highest total of

• Nounkeu and Burak are banned after yellow cards in Madrid; Didier Drogba, Felipe Melo, Nordin Amrabat, Selçuk
and Albert Riera will incur suspensions with their next bookings.
Miscellaneous
• Selçuk and Riera were suspended as Galatasaray recovered from 1-0 down against bottom side Mersin İdman
Yurdu on Saturday to win 3-1, despite Nounkeu's 30th-minute dismissal.
• Drogba scored five minutes into his Galatasaray debut on 15 February but had gone eight games without a goal
before registering twice on Saturday.
• Felipe Melo equalised against Mersin, his first goal since last May.
• Johan Elmander was on the bench after a foot injury that has kept him out since the start of February.
• Umut Bulut (15) and Burak (26) have scored 41 of Galatasaray's 73 goals in all competitions this season.
• Before the first leg Galatasaray had not lost by a three-goal margin in 87 matches, since April 2011.
• Midfielder Felipe Melo saved a penalty in the win at Elazığspor on 24 November after Muslera was sent off with all
Galatasaray's substitutes already made.
• Engin Baytar served an 11-game domestic ban after his red card in August's 3-2 Super Cup victory over Fenerbahçe.
• Tomáš Ujfaluši is not in the UEFA Champions League squad because of a knee injury, but has resumed training.
Real Madrid

• Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer after nine matches with nine goals. The Portuguese international has found the
net 18 times in his last 16 UEFA Champions League appearances.

than any other player. Madrid have had more shots on goal (114) than any other team.
• Madrid have scored 21 goals, the highest total of the quarter-finalists. The first leg was their first clean sheet in the
competition this season.
• At 17 years and 353 days, José Rodríguez surpassed Raúl González as Madrid's youngest ever European Cup
player on matchday six.
• Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos serve one-game suspensions having been cautioned in the first leg; Michael Essien
is within a booking of a ban.
Miscellaneous
• Mesut Özil had gone 23 games without a goal for club and country before scoring two in the last three minutes of
Saturday's 5-1 victory over Levante UD.
• Madrid are 12 matches unbeaten in all competitions, winning ten.

Head coach
Galatasaray AŞ: Fatih Terim
Date of birth: 4 September 1953
Nationality: Turkish
Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ
Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (twice), Galatasaray AŞ (three times),
ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan
• A central defender, Terim played for Galatasaray for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of them
as captain. He started his coaching career with MKE Ankaragücü and then Göztepe, before he was named assistant
to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21s in 1991.
• Appointed Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to EURO '96. They lost all of their games in England, but just getting
to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark.
• After EURO '96 he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling
and Terim took charge of Fiorentina and Milan before returning to Galatasaray, but problems behind the scenes
brought about a temporary retirement in 2004.
• Reappointed by Turkey in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' (The Emperor)
for his leadership skills – could not guide the team through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland.
Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008, however, with Terim leading Ay Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) to the
semi-finals, but he resigned following his side's unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
• Returned for a third spell in charge of Galatasaray in May 2011 and in his first season back steered Cimbom to their
first Süper Lig crown in four years.
Real Madrid CF: José Mourinho
Date of birth: 26 January 1963
Nationality: Portuguese
Coaching career: SL Benfica, UD Leiria, FC Porto, Chelsea FC, FC Internazionale Milano, Real Madrid CF
• A former teacher, Mourinho had spells working at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona as a coaching
assistant in the 1990s.
• As coach, had a brief, nine-game stay at Benfica and a highly successful tenure at Leiria before really making his
mark after arriving at Porto in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, Porto won the UEFA Cup and a domestic
double. The next year they retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat of
AS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.
• Joined Chelsea in 2004 and led the club to the League Cup and their first league championship for 50 years in his
first season. Followed up with the league title again in 2006, and both the League Cup and FA Cup in 2007.
• Left Chelsea in September 2007 and stayed out of football until joining Inter in June 2008. In his first campaign the
Nerazzurri retained their Serie A crown, a feat they repeated in 2009/10 when they also added the Coppa Italia and
the UEFA Champions League title, their first European Cup win since 1965.
• Victory at the Santiago Bernabéu was Mourinho's last act as Inter coach before joining Madrid on a four-year deal.
His first season featured the club's first Copa del Rey victory in 18 years and a UEFA Champions League semi-final
appearance, his second the Liga title and an end to Barcelona's three successive championship triumphs.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?
• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 30 occasions, including FC Barcelona and Málaga
CF in this season's round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and
FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after
a home first-leg loss.
• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals
when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.
• Twenty-two ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.
• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round
of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.
• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-legged
tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most
recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.
• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal
in the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games
also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.
• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of
victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.
• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58.
• Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League
quarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FC
Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories.
• Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record.
• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF
1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.
• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and
José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.
• This season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage (including, as
with all records, the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage) since the UEFA
Champions League began. In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and
lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.
• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club
to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,
1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.
• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in
Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months
later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04
Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC
Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season.
• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete having been aged 43 years 252 days when
he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition.
• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's
1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.
