Human beings can communicate in
many different ways. We use our voices to
speak to each other and we also communicate
by writing and drawing. When we use these
types of communication, we usually know
what we want to say and how we say it. We
are conscious of it. However, there is another
form of communication which is mainly
subconscious. That is we don’t know we are
doing it. This is body language.
The way we sit, stand and use certain
parts of our bodies - like fingers, feet and
eyes – often sends messages to other people
about how we are feeling. And we don’t
always know we are doing it! For example, if
we sit with our arms crossed it can mean that
we are protecting ourselves and that we want
to be left alone. Our feet can also show how
we feel about someone. If we like someone,
our feet will often point towards them when
we are sitting down. Another thing we do if
we get on well with someone is to imitate
their actions. If they cross their legs, we will
cross ours. If they touch their chin, we will
touch ours! And if we are telling a lie, our
eyes look in a certain direction. So, watch
your body language – you may be telling
other people more than you want them to
know!
