Did you Know?
The Sacrifice Holiday is one of the oldest Islamic
holidays in Turkey. It commemorates the story
about Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who showed
obedience to God by agreeing to sacrifice his son.
God then sent him a ram to be sacrificed instead.
It is only obligated for those who earn more than
a certain amount of money. They purchase a
sheep, goat, or a cow to sacrifice in the name of
God and then share it with neighbors, relatives
and mostly with the poor. Traditionally, on the
first day of the Sacrifice Feast in Turkey after a
special morning prayer the sacrifice ritual begins.
The person who wants to sacrifice the animal
gives permission to the butcher so the butcher
slaughters the animal on behalf of the owner.
The butcher says a prayer before slaughtering
the animal. In recent years, instead of sacrificing
animals, some Turkish people make donations to charity organizations.
Everyone’s best clothes are worn while they welcome guests to their homes, or visit relatives or friends during the holiday. The Sacrifice Feast comes about 70 days after the Ramadan Feast.
According to old traditions it is unlucky to get married or start a new business in the period
between these two holidays.
The Sacrifice Feast is an official four-day holiday in Turkey. Administration buildings, schools, banks and post
offices are usually closed, markets remain open, but may work on a special holiday
schedule. Some people may use the four-day holiday to go on a vacation.

Hotdog Scale
Outdoor Recreation Center trips are rated on a scale of 1-5
hotdogs so you can gauge the difficulty of one trip compared to the
others. While a two hotdog trip might seem easy to you, it may be
challenging to another. As a general rule, a one hotdog trip is stroller
friendly although it may be in an off-road way.
