Vijfhonderd jaar geleden publiceerde Thomas More (1478-1535) zijn Utopia.
Het werk, geschreven in de jaren 1515 en 1516, heeft een ongekend grote
invloed gehad, mede omdat More de fictieve staat 'Utopia' in zijn boek
voorstelt als een samenleving zonder privé-eigendom. Het boek Utopia kan
zonder twijfel gelezen worden als een felle aanklacht van Thomas More
tegen misstanden in het Engeland van zijn tijd. Op de vraag of More met
het eiland 'Utopia' een werkelijk te realiseren nieuwe samenlevingsvorm
heeft voorgesteld, zijn in de afgelopen vijfhonderd jaar zeer uiteenlopende
antwoorden geformuleerd. De teksten in dit boek beantwoorden deze vraag
niet. Zij zijn bedoeld om belangstellende hedendaagse lezers van de Utopia
te helpen bij het vormen van een eigen oordeel. Inigo Bocken, Donald Loose

Vol revolutionair elan en aandoenlijke naïviteit hield de jonge Velpse predikant
Johannes Stolk (1761-1834) in maart 1794 een pleidooi voor onderwijs voor
de ‘gemene man’, dat wil zeggen het gewone (mannelijke deel van het)
volk. Zijn gehoor bestond uit leden van het illustere genootschap Prodesse
Conamur, voornamelijk regenten uit Arnhem en omgeving. Mogelijk dat
de verwachte komst van de Franse bevrijders hem inspireerde om ook
anderen aan de idealen van de Verlichting deel te laten nemen. Tot zijn
verbijstering werd hij enige dagen later verbannen uit stad en schependom
en uit Gelderland. Zelfs werd hij met zijn gezin weggejaagd uit andere
provincies en ten slotte als lid van Prodesse geroyeerd. Waarom werd
hij precies verbannen? Hoe verliep zijn leven daarna? De hier integraal
uitgegeven lezing en inleiding over de historische achtergronden van Pieter
van Wissing bieden een interessant inkijkje in een bijzondere geschiedenis.

Door de economische recessie van de afgelopen jaren is de armoede in
Nederland flink toegenomen. Ook zijn er aanwijzingen dat er steeds meer
mensen zijn die ten minste drie jaar van een inkomen onder de armoedegrens
moeten leven. In dit onderzoek richten we ons op die langdurig arme
groep. Aan de orde komen vragen als: om hoeveel mensen gaat het? Is hun
aantal inderdaad gestegen en zo ja, gaat het dan om een structurele of
slechts tijdelijke stijging als gevolg van de crisis? Bij welke categorieën in de
bevolking concentreert de langdurige armoede zich? Zijn dat de klassieke
risicogroepen voor armoede, zoals uitkeringsontvangers, of komt het ook voor
bij groepen waar je het niet zou verwachten? Voor het onderzoek maakten we

Over the years following this unique mini-concert, I frequently have had
the chance to photograph David Bowie at various locations and venues.
On 7 December, 2015 I saw David Bowie at what we know now was his last
public appearance; the Lazarus musical premiere in New York. Although I did
not know him personally, he was a constant source of musical inspiration
and pleasure for me. In this book, which is a tribute to the singer who has
inspired me over the years, there are pictures of the following tours: "The
Glass Spider", "Sound and Vision", "Tin Machine", "It's My Life", "Outside",
Outside Summer Festivals, and finally the "Earthling Tour". It spans a decade
of concerts which took place from 1987 - 1997 in the Netherlands. These
photos of David Bowie mark the beginning, and also the breakthrough, of my
career as a professional photographer. I am delighted to share these photos
with you and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do. To have been able to
attend his concerts and photograph him was a feast. He is no more and that's

Dutch cinema, when discussed, is typically treated only in terms of pre-war
films or documentaries, leaving post-war fictional film largely understudied.
At the same time, a "Hollandse school," a term first coined in the 1980s, has
developed through deadpan, ironic films like those of director and actor Alex
van Warmerdam. Using seminal theories on humour and comedy, this book
explores a number of Dutch films using the notion of categories, such as lowclass comedies, neurotic romances, deliberate camp, and grotesque satire.
With its original approach, this study makes surprising connections between

Lies Van Gasse en Peter Theunynck werden gegrepen door het levensverhaal
van Nel, de vrouw van de bekende Vlaamse schilder Rik Wouters (1882-1916),
en maakten er deze schitterende graphic novel over. Nel, de dochter van
een postbode uit Koekelberg bij Brussel, wil iets maken van haar leven. Ze
is gebiologeerd door de wereld van schilders en beeldhouwers, daar loopt
ze Rik Wouters tegen het lijf. Rik is een jonge, talentvolle kunstenaar en Nel
wordt zijn model, zijn muze en zijn vrouw. Via hem wil ze onsterfelijk worden
en daar heeft ze alles voor over. Maar dan slaat het noodlot toe: de Eerste
Wereldoorlog breekt uit en soldaat Wouters belandt als krijgsgevangene in
Kamp Zeist in Nederland. Daar blijkt al snel dat hij kanker heeft. Rik sterft in
een ziekenhuis aan de Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. Nel is nauwelijks dertig
en toch is haar leven al voorbij. Nu de ogen van haar magiër gedoofd zijn,
bestaat ze niet meer. De dichter Peter Theunynck laat Nel zelf haar tragische
leven vertellen in een beeldrijke, beklijvende taal. Dichter en kunstenaar Lies
van Gasse brengt het verhaal in beeld. Dat levert op elke bladzijde vuurwerk
