THE FUNERAL MASS WITH RECEPTION OF THE BODY
By receiving the body into the church, the community recognizes that the one who
has died was united with them through Baptism, and commends them to the
father.
P. The grace and peace of God our Father, who raised Jesus from the dead, be with

SPRINKLING WITH HOLY WATER
The priest now sprinkles the coffin with holy water which reminds us of the
saving waters of Baptism.
PLACING OF THE PALL
The pall, a reminder of the baptismal garment, is a sign of the Christian dignity
of the person who has died.
PLACING OF THE CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS
The Easter candle is placed near the coffin to remind us of the undying presence of
Christ among us. Those who are baptized share in his victory over sin and death.

THE BIDDING
We are gathered here at Basilique Cathédrale du Saint-Esprit to give thanks for the life of
Gregory Michael Kiez to commend his soul to almighty God, and to seek his comfort for all
who mourn. We particularly pray for God's restoring peace and loving presence with his loving
ones.
We give thanks to God for Gregory Michael Kiez; for his sense of joy and for the way he gave
so much to so many people. Lord we thank you for Gregory, whose life touched us all and for
all those memories of his that we treasure. We give thanks for those qualities and strengths
that endeared him to us; for his vulnerability; for his radiant and vibrant personality; for his
ability to communicate warmth and compassion; for his ringing laugh; and above all for his
readiness to identify with those less fortunate in our nation and the world.
Lord of the loving: Hear our prayer.
For his family:
We pray for those most closely affected by his death: for Mehmet Kutman who mourns the
passing of his dearly lifetime friend; for his family, especially for his mother, his father, his
beloved brother Chris, his sister and nephews.
Lord of the bereaved: Hear our prayer.
For all who mourn:
Gregory was not alone in losing his young life tragically. We remember all for whom today's
service rekindles memories of grief untimely borne. Lord, in certain hope of the resurrection to
eternal life, we commend to you all who have lost loved ones in tragic circumstances. Give them
comfort; renew their faith and strengthen them in the weeks and months ahead.

For Gregory's life and work:
Gregory will be especially missed by the many charities with which he identified himself.
Lord we pray for all who are weak, poor and powerless in this country and throughout the
world; the sick; the maimed and all whose lives are damaged. We thank you for the way that
Gregory became a hope and a source of strength for so many. We commend to you all those
charities that he supported. Strengthen the resolve of those who work for them to continue the
good work begun with him.
Lord of the suffering: Hear our prayer.
Lord we thank you for Gregory's commitment to others. Give us the same compassion and
commitment. Give us a steadfast heart, which no unworthy thought can drag down; an
unconquered heart, which no tribulation can wear out; an upright heart, which no unworthy
purpose can tempt aside. Grant us, O Lord, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you,
wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may bring us to your eternal kingdom. Lord of

P. My brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries
with our departed brother Gregory Michael Kiez, let us call to mind our sins.
A. I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have
sinned through my own fault (all strike their breast) in my thoughts and in my
words, in what I have done, and what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary,
ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for
me to the Lord our God.
P. May almighty God cleanse us of our sins, and through the eucharist we
celebrate make us worthy to sit at his table in his heavenly kingdom.

OPENING PRAYER
P. In the prayers of the Funeral Rite the priest addresses God on behalf of the
person who has died and the mourners. He does this in the name of the whole
church. A moment of silent prayer allows us to join with these prayers.
God, you have called your son Gregory Michael Kiez. From this life. Father of all
mercy, fulfill his safely home to heaven, to be happy with you forever.
We ask this in the name of “Jesus the Lord”.

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans (6, 3-9)
Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death
like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we
know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might
be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who
has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we
will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he
cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

P.A. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that
is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten
of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: (all bow) by the power of the
Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suffered, died and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
fulfilment of the Scriptures. He ascended in to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Holding bünyesinde faaliyet gösteren, Ege Ports – Kuşadası Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı, Port
Akdeniz – Antalya Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı, Global Liman İşletmeleri A.Ş Yönetim Kurulu
Başkanı ve Global Yatırım Holding Yönetim Kurulu Üyesi olarak görev yaptı.
Toronto Üniversitesi hukuk fakültesi mezunu olan ve akademik alanda birçok ödüle sahip olan
Gregory Michael Kiez, akademik kariyerinde Norman Levy, Borden & Elliot, Dow-Hickson
Bursu, James Cappon Ödülü ve James McGill Ödülü gibi birçok önemli ödüle sahip olma
başarısı gösterdi.
Gregory Michael Kiez, 2009 yılında yakalandığı talihsiz hastalıkla sadece kendisi için
savaşmanın yanı sıra, aynı zamanda dünyada ve Türkiye'de bu hastalık ile ilgili toplumu
bilinçlendirmek, tedavi yöntemlerinin gelişmesi ve aynı hastalıkla savaşan birçok insana
yardım etmek için sayısız yardımlar ve bağışlarda bulundu.
Yaşamının son 20 yılını geçirdiği Türkiye’de, olmayan bir sektörün yaratılmasını ve bu
sektörde Türkiye’nin büyük bir oyuncu konumuna gelmesini sağlayan çalışmaları yanında,
Gregory Michael Kiez, bir Türkiye sevdalısı olarak farklı uluslararası platformlarda
Türkiye'nin birçok alanda haklarını defalarca savundu.
Türkiye hakkında yurtdışındaki olumsuz düşüncelerin gerçek olmadığını ispat etmek için
yaşamı boyunca mücadele eden Gregory Michael Kiez’in, 2004 yılında Miami'de düzenlenen
Deniz Ticaret Kongresi'nde "Güvenlik Kirliliği" başlıklı panelde yapmış olduğu konuşma, bugün
Türkiye'de bulunan limanların gelişmesi adına milat olarak kabul edilmekte.

Gregory Michael Kiez, yaşamı boyunca kimsesiz çocuklara yardım faaliyetlerinde bulundu ve
aynı zamanda eğitimin önemine değindi. Gerek Global Liman İşletmeleri gerekse de Türk
limanlarının yüksek standartlarda sektörel eğitim almış insan gücüne sahip olabilmesi adına
çalışmalar gerçekleştirdi.
Adına yaptırmış olduğu 12 derslik, 3 laboratuar ve 2 adet uygulamalı eğitim mutfağı gibi
geniş imkanlara sahip olan Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Turizm İşletmeciliği ve Otelcilik
Yüksekokulu, Gregory Michael Kiez Uygulamalı ve Teorik Derslikleri’nde bugün 2000’e yakın
öğrenci eğitimine devam ediyor.
Aynı zamanda sanata ve dünya miraslarına sahip çıkmaya önem veren Kiez, 2006 yılından
bu yana, deniz arkeolojisi alanında dünyaca tanınmış lider enstitü olan ve Bodrum Sualtı
Arkeolojisi Müzesi'nde sergilenen Bronz Çağı Uluburnu gemi enkazı kazısıyla İstanbul
Yenikapı kazısı da dahil çok sayıda keşif kazısının lideri konumunda olan Texas A&M
Üniversitesi Deniz Arkeolojisi Enstitüsü (INA) yönetim kurulu üyesiydi.
Uzun yıllar üst düzey yöneticilik görevini üstlendiği Global Yatırım Holding ve bağlı
şirketlerinde titiz çalışma disiplini, yol göstericiliği ve vizyonerliğiyle Global Ailesi’nde ve
faaliyet gösterdiği sektörlerde birçok kişiye kılavuz olan Kiez, yakalandığı hastalığa karşı iki
yılı aşkın süredir sürdürdüğü savaşla da mücadeleci kişiliğini bir kez daha gösterirken son bir
ders vererek aramızdan ayrılmış oldu.

Doyen of the Turkish Maritime Sector and Philanthropist Has Passed Away
Gregory Michael Kiez, a Board Member of Global Investment Holdings and Chairman of the
Board of Global Ports Holding and a doyen in the finance and port operations sectors in
Turkey, has died at the age of 50.
Mr. Kiez had been battling since 2009 against the brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme
(GBM), which according to World Health Organisation classification has the most advanced
degree of malignancy among such cancers.
Gregory Michael Kiez, who was born in Canada, lived for the past twenty years in Turkey,
where he has left behind a significant legacy as a successful businessman.
He was Chairman of the Board of Ege Ports – Kusadasi, Chairman of the Board of Port
Akdeniz – Antalya and Chairman of the Board of Global Ports Holding, all of which operate
under Global Investment Holdings, where Mr. Kiez also served as a Board Member.
Gregory Michael Kiez held a BA degree in law from the University of Toronto and received
numerous awards during his academic career, including scholarships from Norman Levy,
Borden & Elliot, Dow-Hickson, as well as the James Cappon Award and the James McGill
Award.
During the two decades he spent in Turkey, Gregory Michael Kiez, whose love for the country
was well-known, promoted and defended Turkey many times on many platforms in addition to
his contribution in creating a new industry sector and positioning Turkey as a major player
within it.
In particular, Mr. Kiez fought against and sought to dispel negative perceptions of Turkey
abroad. Today, his speech at the “Security Pollution” Panel of the 2004 Maritime Trade
Congress in Miami is considered the milestone of port sector development in Turkey.
Throughout his life in Turkey, Gregory Michael Kiez played a significant role in social welfare
initiatives targeted at underprivileged children and accorded great importance to the betterment
of educational services. He also pioneered higher education investments to provide specialized,
world-class training to local manpower in the tourism sector, benefitting Global Ports Holding
and Turkish ports generally.

Today, the Gregory Michael Kiez Applied and Theoretical Classrooms of the Adnan Menderes
University Tourism and Hotel Management College facilities, which were constructed under his
aegis and include twelve classrooms, three laboratories and two applied training kitchens,
welcome approximately 2,000 students daily.
In parallel with his philanthropic activities, Mr. Kiez placed great importance on the protection
of works of art and world heritage. From 2006 onwards, he served as a board member of
Texas A&M University-Institute of Nautical Archeology (INA) which is recognized as a
leading institution in maritime archeology and has spear-headed many excavations, including
the Istanbul Yenikapi excavation and the excavation of the Bronze Age Uluburnu shipwreck on
display in the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
Not least, in the final stage of his life, Mr. Kiez not only fought against GBM but supported
multiple initiatives and made numerous donations to create awareness of the disease, to develop
treatment methods for it and to help many others in their struggle against it.
During his long tenure as a senior executive within Global Investment Holdings and its
subsidiaries, Gregory Michael Kiez was a mentor to many members of the Global Family and
to many of his colleagues within the finance and port sectors, owing to his meticulous work
ethic, self-discipline, wisdom and considered guidance. He has left us with a final lesson in life
by setting an example as a fighter, one last time, during the unrelenting battle that he waged
against GBM for more than two years.
