Of course we had to restrict this endless subject while discussing it. Maybe it is possible to divide photography into two as before and after digital photography. We designed these two parts and determined a starting point in the first part before digital technology: we started with “An Overlook To Photograhy History” article of Şenay Kaya, the photography expert of Anadolu University who provides consultancy in this issue. Among our pages, there are Prof Dr Levend Kılıç interview with his exhibition “40 Years in Business Photograph Exhibition” and the article written by Alper Elitok for our magazine on “pinhole” photography, which is one of the alternative photography techniques. After that, there will be an interview with famous photographer Niko Guido and finally we will talk about image retouching, which is an old technique, for enthusiasts. In addition to those, we also included a must see photography exhibition in Pera Museum: our photography issue is ready for you with Yıldız Moran exhibition. In Latin, camera means room and obscura means dark. The history of this device, which Leonardo da Vinci explained in detail in his notes, goes back to İLKEL GÖRÜNTÜ ELDE ETME ARACI iğneyle bir delik açıp, bu deliğin karşısına OLAN CAMERA OBSCURA, FOTOĞRAF gelen duvara, odanın içinden beyaz bir MAKINESININ ATASI OLARAK BILINIR. kâğıt konulduğunda, iğne deliğinden Latince camera ‘oda’, obscura ‘karanlık’ giren güneş ışığı, beyaz kağıt üzerine anlamına gelmektedir. It is thought that camera obscura was first used by Arabian optician İbni Heysem to observe solar eclipse in the 10th century. The working principle of camera obscura: On a sunny day, a hole is opened with a pin in the middle of a wall of a light proof chamber with four walls and a white paper is placed across this hole. The sunlight filtered through the pinhole is reflected on the white paper and the image of the objects in front of the pinhole will be reflected upside down within the dark chamber. This image on the white paper is the phantasm of an object on another surface. Fixing the image obtained with camera obscura technique on a surface was only possible with the studies of Joseph Nicesphore Niepce. Niepce, who conducted camera obscura experiments in 1816, was able to reflect the negative image of farm yard on the photosensitive surface but could not obtained positive copy. After a long period, he was able to obtain positive image by applying some kind of photosensitive asphalt on a lead tin alloy plate. He installed the plate on the wall in his house and he recorded the scenery outside his house on this plate through the hole on the wall. www.tasartdergi.com Şenay KAYA : Fotoğraf Tarihine Kısa Bir Bakış / An Overlook To Photograhy History düşürmeyi başarmış, fakat pozitif 1838’de Hippolyte Bayard (1801–1887) kopyasını elde edememiştir. Eastman put the cameras he named Kodak on the market with the advertising slogan “You press the button, we do the rest.” Another important advancement related to photography was the invention of colored photography. It was not possible until 1930s to obtain a picture in natural colors. While photographers colored the photographs manually, if requested, until adlı kamera geliştirmiştir. Anadolu’nun bir bozkırı olarak çoğu kez 14 __You combined various occupations and craftsmen with the spectacular aesthetics of photography in your work,” 40 Years in Business” and created a document whose value is increasing continuously. How did this idea come up? And why did you prefer black and white photographs? Eskişehir is where I grew up. I spent my childhood and adolescence on the streets of this city. Like many, I have infinite number of memories about this city I live in. Frequently referred to as a moorland in Anatolia, Eskişehir has a different situation for me. Within this context, I have performed many studies and written books related to Eskişehir. Of course, these studies were based on my anılan Eskişehir, benim gözümde farklı durumları içerir. In 2000, I want to leave a memory to Eskişehir, the city where I grew up, at the beginning of a new century. I started a research and it led to 40 Years in Business: Craftsmen of Eskişehir. Like many other Anatolian cities, Eskişehir has changed and developed rapidly in the last 20 years. Within this process, craftsmen of the city were pushed aside along with many other traditional aspects of the city. This group, which goes out of sight, is about to be forgotten. I recorded these craftsmen from a social documenter perspective in this work. At the beginning of 21st century, I photographed 100 craftsmen who have been in business for more than 40 years in Eskişehir. You may ask why craftsmen and why forty years? The relationship of these people with their working space and other people has fascinated me all along. During my research, I saw that the ones who started their business in 60s have a different condition. They are like the living history of this country in a sense. Another fact that should be emphasized is that this study is not a nostalgic effort. I photographed these people at the beginning of 2000s as an academician who has the ability to take photographs and write. The fact that all these craftsmen will die and be history will reveal the importance of my work in years. Each craftsman ha two photographs in this work. The first one is the photograph that shows the place and the person. The second is the one that gets into the subject. The photographs are taken black and white. All photographs are hand printed. For me, the reason for www.tasartdergi.com H. Bengi ADALI’nın Prof. Dr. Levend Kılıç ile “Meslekte Kırk Yıllıklar” Sergisi Hakkında Röportaj/ Interviewed About” 40 Years in Business “Exhibition with Prof. Dr. Levend Kılıç ilişkileri beni öteden beri etkilemiştir. Ayrıca bir 16 that is simple: I learnt photography as black and white photography in the streets of Eskişehir during 1970s. For that reason, my present to this city should be black and white. Moreover, if there is a specialty, I consider myself as a man of this area. On the other hand, narrative aspect of black and white photography is another point to be considered. Since I work with black and white photography technique, I have already made my decision. The outcome may be good or bad, people might or might not like the photographs; I do not discuss that. Time will reveal the value of the photographs. On the other hand, the fact not to be discussed is that this work is presented as a project. Consider that similar works related to each city in our country were created 20 years earlier. How valuable would they be? Star Albums created during Abdülhamid II have established some kind of visual memory. Of course, the technical and visual quality of the photographs in those albums is important. What is more important is the quality of establishing documents and visual memory. I try to establish the visual memory of Eskişehir. It is not an easy job. Only Anadolu University supports me. Research Fund of the university sponsored my work, 40 Years in Business: Craftsmen of Eskişehir. I wish that the forces of this Anatolian city, which enable development, also support such works. I talked too much, I want to go back to your question. You asked why black and white, as you can see, the situation itself is grey, who needs ustalık söz konusu ise kendimi bu alanın adamı sayarım. __Today technology is progressing rapidly in every field. More and more people are preferring smart phones to cameras. Can we say that these advancements devalues photography as an art? Or can they increase interest in photography because they provide easiness? Yes, I work with black and white photography, do not get me wrong, I am not against new technologies. I teach Media Aesthetics and Video Art since 1980. I work with the digital technology. At this point, it is necessary to know a principal difference. Bunlar ne kadar değerli olurdu. II. __Günümüzde teknoloji her alanda hızla ilerliyor. Bunların bazıları hem içerik hem de görsel yapı olarak 22 which do not produce in any field of photography technology, do not have a chance. In that sense, we should study the photograph artists and especially film makers of our neighbour Iran. Just like the novel, poetry and arts of a countries, photography is also different. Especially until the end of 1970s, this difference was apparent. It was easy to tell a photograph artist from a Northern European country from a Polish or Czech artist. Although the technology was the same, the output was different. What I mentioned above was that personal bir kültürü yansıtıyordu. I mentioned about the most important memory related to photography and which is determinant in terms of my life in the preface to my book, Beginning Photography. It was early 1970s, when I started to learn about photography. We had a quite curious teacher who aims to teach photography. He was trying to teach the tools in mind, knowledge and experience was determinant. Today, outcomes are more and more similar because of similar devices. However, the photograph artists, who assimilated and are trained on this technology, stand out. Exhibitions in Bursa Photography Festival this year are the most beautiful examples of this. In these exhibitions, works of photographers from various countries were exhibited in the same halls. Some of them reflected a culture in terms of both content and visual structure. I call this visual aesthetic energy of photograph in my books. Formation of this energy is a distinctive incident. Daha ilk derste bizlere optikten başlayarak, his hand using cameras. Even in the first class, he told tens of details from optic to films and dark room processes. And I thought how can a mind remembers and even implements all these processes and technical details. After the first class, more than half of the students dropped the class, because they understood that it was quite difficult. The teacher continued with the few left. He talked and we got smaller and we were afraid. What kind of a job this is, there is shutter, diaphragm, ASA, film, exposure on one hand and filmlerden, karanlık oda süreçlerinden devam etti. I realized that photography is simple in mid 1980s. This is a misery and an interesting memory for me.
