The peaceful cohabitation of bachelors Ender and Çetin is disrupted when they allow a friend’s sister
to move in with them. The 30-something longtime friends are overwhelmed by the presence of the
uncommunicative Nihal. What possessed them to accept the responsibility of a university student
in their home? Especially a girl struggling with the trauma of recently losing her parents in a car
accident. But simple daily rituals like sharing meals eventually bring the three roommates together
for more pleasant moments. Nihal soon comes out of her depressed shell and the two men discover
a vibrant beautiful young woman. Always caring and protective gentlemen, Ender and Çetin are
intent on being conscientious guardians. Nihal enjoys discussing literature and poetry with scholarly
Ender, and she finds comfort in boisterous Çetin’s earthy humor. Before they see what’s coming,
both men fall in love with the enchanting Nihal.

Orhan Kemal’s masterpiece 72nd Ward is the story of the abyss into which human dignity can fall...
The 1940s, years of famine in Turkey as the impact of World War II made itself felt. The destitute
prisoners serving time for miscellaneous crimes in the penitentiary’s ward no 72. ‘Man is a wolf to
his fellow man,’ goes the saying, and we are exposed here to the world of the abyss into which
men tumble with their poverty, suffering, longing for humanity, dreams about life, conflicts, loves
and quarrels.
This is a world in which people can sink so low as to sell their closest friends for next to nothing, yet
also share their few pennies to the very end. 72nd Ward is a story of humanity and reminds us like
a slap in the face of our lost values.
Murat Saraçoğlu (Istanbul, 1970) studied at the Radio and Television Department
of Istanbul University. He has directed several television series, as well as writing an
award-winning book of short stories.

A love affair threatened by a barrier as great as itself…
Can differences of faith stand in the way of an innocent love affair?
Two young people, Esma and Mustafa, fall in love. For them, the future only has meaning if they are
together. Failing this, life is meaningless. However, overhanging their love is a barrier unique to the
period and location: Mustafa is a clandestine Christian, when everyone including Esma thinks he is
Muslim. In the meantime, the Ottoman Empire introduces a series of reforms giving Christians the
same rights as Muslims. From this point on, the Church urges secret Christians to reveal their faith.
This poses a dilemma for Mustafa: he is caught between his love and the Church.
Yusuf Kurçenli (Rize, 1947) studied journalism. He worked as both a producer and
a director for state broadcaster TRT from 1973 to 1980. Kurçenli, who has also
directed numerous television series, is a director who stands out in Turkish cinema
for his own distinctive narrative style.

A painter with a turbulent history, fiercely committed to his ideals and still averse to settling down
despite his 70 years; a lawyer who packed in his job after suffering a heart attack and now pursues
a quiet life looking after his pet snail; a doctor already disenchanted with his profession and now
discarded by his wife; a career woman braving life on her own, who has made loneliness a lifestyle.
These characters are all patrons of Black & White, an Ankara bar that has been around for 25 years,
and in a sense the bar is their last haven. The owner, meanwhile, is the irritable, easily offended but
utterly lovable Faruk...
Black & White is a film about the awareness of growing old, friendship, sensitivity and the finer
details of life.

Servet, the accountant of a large company, plans to steal a small fortune from the company’s
internet bank accounts, encouraged by his wife’s hunger for money. Servet’s plan also includes his
best friend Gökhan, in that he’ll transfer the funds to Gökhan’s account, so that if anything goes
wrong his friend will get the blame. Two other friends of Servet’s will figure as extras in the scam.
But he has forgotten two things: first that although his friends are tricky like him, they’re also naive;
and second, that if they’re trying to be jackals themselves, they’re already in the thick of a jackals’
world. The result? The four friends bungle the whole venture in a serious of and their ambitions of
making a fast buck lead them on a wild and entertaining adventure.

Hamdi, a wig seller in a run-down district in Istanbul, is desperately lonely. He’s addicted to cigarettes
and spends his time, day and night, bored, in his store, which is also his home. His cancer means
he has only a short time left to live, but he chain-smokes, staring out of his window at a woman in
red, a prostitute standing on the pavement on the other side of the noisy road. Hamdi also believes
he is shrinking and measures his height every day. He has no expectations: except perhaps of going
somewhere far away before he dies. Brazil is the furthest place he can think of, a paradise with
no pain. One day a strange thing happens: a woman, Meryem, comes to his store to sell her very
long hair. Hamdi is stunned as he contemplates her. He cuts her hair as she hides her tears. Hamdi
becomes obsessed, following her when she leaves the store and then everywhere she goes.

Hayde Bre is the story of a man torn from his rural roots who gradually wilts as he witnesses the
world rapidly changing. Old age is such an extraordinary realm that we feel like bowing respectfully
before the elderly, who despite their years embody a potent combination of strength and wisdom...
Şaban Aga lives in a small town with his wife and his friends, while Saadet struggles to survive in
the city with her three children and paralytic husband Osman, who demands her constant care.
Their two disparate lives are destined to cross unexpectedly. Saadet travels with her children to
Macedonia for her son Orhan’s circumcision ceremony, delighting Şaban Aga and Mamo by her
arrival. For the return trip to Istanbul, they travel with Şaban Aga’s friend Vanya in his car. But on
the way, they have an accident. Mamo is seriously injured and dies soon after. With some difficulty
Saadet persuades the unwilling Şaban Aga to come to Istanbul.

The elimination night of ‘Home’, a TV contest along the same lines as ‘Big Brother’... The show goes
ahead smoothly until the eliminated contestant leaves the home. A gunshot is heard and the live
broadcast is interrupted. A gunman has broken into the house and planted bombs at every exit. His
intention is to liven up the dull contest and allow the game to be played by his own rules. There’s
just one condition to leaving the house: everything that happens there under his supervision must
be broadcast live. Under this scenario, where contestants are cast in the role of victim and viewers
in the role of killers, the night promises more than evicting the chosen contestant...

“The situation is not specific to Turkey; such cases also exist in the rest of the world. Although incest
has different meanings in different cultures, it is almost always treated as invisible, a taboo which is
not talked about and ignored (...) And for us, ignoring this problem is like taking a part in it. That’s
why we wanted to make this movie, not to take part in this crime.” İlksen Başarır

In the first half of the 1990s, a time of intense clashes between Kurdish guerrillas and the Turkish
government, a handful of young journalists were struggling to proclaim the ongoing human rights

and to reveal the truth. Journalism is no longer a profession: it becomes a matter of life or death.
Sedat Yılmaz (1972) graduated from the Film & TV Department of Marmara
University. Between 2000-2003 he held workshops with young filmmakers, which
resulted in several short films. He founded his own production company, Karıncalar

What would a man risk to avoid getting blood on his hands if he found himself and his family
unwittingly surrounded by violence? What are the ways to protect innocence and remain human in
a world dominated by violence? Set in the Cyprus of 1963, this story is inspired by a real-life incident
that took place during the ethnic clashes between Turks and Greeks, and presents its own myths
and belief in peace within an impressive visual and dramatic structure.
Derviş Zaim (1964) graduated from Boğaziçi University with a degree in management
and went on to earn an MA in film and cultural studies from the University of
Warwick in the UK. The first feature he wrote and directed, Somersault in a Coffin,
won several national and international awards. He followed this up with the awardwinning Elephants and Grass and then Mud, which won an award at Venice. He
currently teaches film at Istanbul’s Bilgi and Boğaziçi Universities.

Aziz works as a clerk in a library and lives a quiet and peaceful life in his own little world. One day,
Seçil, the owner of a new beauty parlor in the neighborhood, moves into the apartment building
where Aziz lives with her 10-year-old daughter Gizem. Aziz now leads a more colorful life with his
new neighbors, but his life is overshadowed when the little girl falls into a deep sleep. Gizem’s
slumber triggers a whole series of events, and a bunch of ordinary-looking but distinctive characters
join together to try to change the course of fate. Sleeping Princess is an upbeat Çağan Irmak film
and, in contrast with others, it is a fairy tale to be read upon waking up.
Çağan Irmak (Izmir, 1970) graduated from the Radio and Television Department of
Ege University. In 1992, he won the Sedat Simavi Award for two shorts he made as
a student, Masal and Kurban. After graduating, he worked as an assistant director

A young woman from the very liberal Aegean city of Smyrna is posted to a cold and religious northern
town, Of, for her first job as a judge. She goes with her mother, both full of preconceptions about
the ill-famed town, which is supposedly home to terrifying mafias and Islamists. However, what
they find are warm and joyous people dancing with the merest sound of music on their beautiful
mountains. The only difficulty is the odd mentality of the Black Sea people. A social satire on regional
contradictions, cultural prejudices, disastrous consequences of the so-called development on the
environment, and the heavy burdens women endure in a land which gave birth to the Amazons.
Nur Dolay studied sociology and political sciences in USA and at Sorbonne University,
Paris. She worked as a journalist for the French media (Le Monde Diplomatique,
Courrier International, Thalassa on France 3 TV, Radio France International) and
Turkish press for 28 years. She has travelled all over the world and written books on
Latin America and the Caucasus, as well as making a dozen documentary films on
geopolitical issues and marine subjects. Smyrn-Of is her directorial debut.

A friendship that began as two boys in Thessaloniki, developed as two comrades in arms, and
blossomed in a sense of brotherhood based on the same ideals until the death of one after the
Republic was proclaimed. So strong was the bond between them that when one passed away, the
other genuinely wished the same.
The story of a generation challenging death! Veda is not only a film about the life of Ataturk; it
also sheds light on a particular period of Turkish history, taking up a human approach in its analysis
of brotherhood, war, love and affection. It is a story of fellowship, a portrayal of the milestones in
Ataturk’s life, and the story of a leader commanding a generation which challenged death to save
the homeland. The story is narrated by Salih Bozok, a key witness of the period.
Zülfü Livaneli is an international author, musician and filmmaker whose work has
been published in 28 different languages. He has worked with well-known figures
such as Elia Kazan, Vanessa Redgrave, Arthur Miller and Mikhail Gorbachev on
developing world culture and contributing to progress in the arts. He has seven
books, 25 albums, 300 compositions and three feature films to his name.

Where the Fire Burns is a road story. Ayse suddenly falls sick and is hospitalized for an urgent
operation. Her family is hugely supportive at first, but during the operation the girl is found to be 14
weeks pregnant. Once recovered from the successful surgery, Ayse refuses to reveal who the father

Hasan is a 12-year-old boy, struggling to survive in a mountain village with his two younger siblings
and devoted to his mother. The family falls into poverty when his father goes to prison and his
mother starts to work as a caretaker in town.
The film tells the story of Hasan set against the backdrop of a small, impoverished village, the deadlock
of their deprivation, and what he goes through to try to scrape a living. It also tells of the people
around him as they try to settle their own scores with life and themselves. White as Snow shows
us how our lives are interconnected, how we are all responsible for each other, how a seemingly
insignificant act in one person’s life can have an unprecedented impact on someone else’s.

strive to adapt to the system instead of trying to change it. We strive to survive by creating even
more weird and extraordinary solutions. In a way, this attitude is hope for hopelessness, a solution
for the insoluble. A character of this nature has always come to be worth telling. As in the logical
argument of philosopher St Augustine “Credo quia absurdum” (“I believe it because it is absurd”),
the absurd has the power to be irrefutable and indestructible. The seemingly isolated stories about
each character that tell of their lives, needs, goals, and methods in fact take us to the picture of a
system that makes people think and do the extraordinary.

In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in eastern Turkey, Berfé, an old woman, and Jiyan, her young
granddaughter, are troubled when the only man of the household, Temo, the son of one and father
of the other, is arrested and taken into custody by the local gendarmerie. The commanding officer
has received word that the villagers are hiding guns. It is announced that all the men of the village
will be kept in custody until their families submit and hand over the guns they are hiding. But the
problem is there are no guns, at least to the knowledge of these two blameless women. Despairing
and on their own, Berfé and Jiyan are faced with a long journey in search of a gun that they can
exchange for their beloved Temo. But how can their innocence and naivety find a way out in a
system that threatens, eventually, to drag them into the sullied world of an interminable conflict?

Tired of the noise and pollution of large cities, a group of environmental intellectuals abandon
the big city and return to nature. They build a brand new village with shabby old stone houses on
a block of land they purchase. They name their new village ‘Ecovillage’. Their intention here is to
enjoy a happy life through ecological tourism, organic farming, and arts and culture. At first they
coexist happily with the true village folk from whom they purchased the land and old stone houses.
In fact, there’s even attraction between the leading intellectual character, Camille, and Ali, the
village headman. Katrin is a European character who settled in Turkey after years of working for
environmental organizations like Greenpeace. Meanwhile, the village headman Ali has never left his
village and has no education – a typical village person. The emotional bond between them develops
in a humorous yet strange manner.

middle class values, he wants to leave his hometown in pursuit of a better life. When he meets Eda,
a tomboyish and striking beauty, who draws ship murals throughout the city, he is convinced that
he must find ‘Distant’ and Eda is meant to join him on his quest. Eda finds it hard to connect with Ali
at first, but is soon drawn to his uniqueness and lack of pretence. Wanting to see what is out there
in the world, Eda and Ali bond in a seemingly childish way and as they embark on an adventure to
find ‘Distant’, their lives are slowly thrown into chaos.

The late 1990s, Turkey... As the conservative state radio’s monopoly ends, so an increasing number
of private radio stations come on air daily. Among the new stations, one airs a programme that
breaks all the rules of conventional Turkish broadcasting. ‘Have we had sex before?’ is the question
that greets women listeners on air, while ‘We’d really like to stay with you all night, but as you
know, we have a sex life too,’ is the show’s closing tag line. The show, hosted by two men, Kaan
and Mete, is called The Losers’ Club. Kaan owns a publishing house which publishes alternative
books – the kind that don’t sell. Mete runs a bar in Kadikoy and is a dedicated old record and
document collector. Both are lonely, neither involved in a serious relationship, and both surviving
on one-night stands. In the second half of the 1990s, they begin hosting a new radio show for fun.

The film opens against the backdrop of one of the remarkable milestones of the 20th century. Kemal,
in his early 20s, is a university student who watches news break of the collapse of socialism on a tiny
television enlightening his intrinsically messy student house. The ethos of his Weltanschauung, which
he adopted a while ago, is now being demolished by people in the system with sledgehammers,
axes and dozers before his very eyes.
Love and Revolution is a story revolving around youth, a stage of life during which people desperately
need a sense of belonging. In a sense, it is the story of a time when actual identities fall short, while
feelings of deprivation and lust (spiritual, sexual, political, mental etc.) prey on the existence of being
human.
F. Serkan Acar (Artvin, 1975) studied psychology at Istanbul University. During
his university years he wrote articles for, and published cinema magazines. After
graduating, he worked on television and cinema productions as an assistant director
and production manager. During this period he made the documentary film Bread
about a factory strike, as well as a short film. He founded Kuzey Film in 2007 and
produced the Özcan Alper directed feature Autumn.

Mehdi, Pelin, Harun, Murat and an Afghan family, whose paths cross in a hotel, have all fled from
the repression of their respective homelands. The Luxury Hotel, the first stop on a long journey to
more independent lives, brings incarceration to these people. Just like kites caught on power lines,
they become stuck in the hotel.
The Luxury Hotel is a desolate, has-been place. Despite its desolation, the hotel is run by the mafioso
character Cumali, who is interested in nothing but money. The refugees can neither return to where
they’ve escaped from, nor move on to where they planned, even though they face harsh conditions
in the hotel…
Kenan Korkmaz (Diyarbakır, 1969) spent many years working as a journalist and a
photographer. He lectured on photography and cinema at Çukurova University. He
has shot several documentaries and short films. The Luxury Hotel is his feature debut.

Oasis grows out of three different stories: Share, Skirt and Conscience. Each of the stories takes
place in fall, in the same village and within the same time frame, and they interconnect through
tiny circles. In a small village, beneath three separate roofs three different lives are bound to each
other… A father, a son, a husband and wife, a mother-in-law and a bride, as representing the young,
old and dying conditions of human existence. A rifle stolen from the gendarmerie near the village
links the stories.

Like the seeds of a pomegranate we are all individuals: we are both remarkably similar and
remarkably different. But at the same time we are like a whole, unopened pomegranate. The rind
which holds us together is the faith we have in one another. Suppose, then, that the rind bursts...
Suppose we start doubting everything we believe in, including the faith we have in one another...
Suppose our sense of justice evaporates... Suppose everyone begins to seek their own justice...
Wouldn’t we scatter everywhere like the seeds of a pomegranate bursting open? Pomegranate is a
tale that begins with a woman seeking her own justice...

Somewhere in Between is a film project which explores how growing up and living in today’s world
are tantamount to being in ‘total limbo’. The narrative focuses on the desires, dreams, cravings,
viewpoints, expectations and loves of two adolescents stuck in the threshold of purgatory and
chained to their anguish. It is the story of enduring a plastic world suppressed, de-valued and
debased by artificial, illusory expectations - a process that also deepens immutable social inequalities.
After making several award-winning shorts in Turkey, Yeşim Ustaoğlu won
international recognition for her 1999 film, Journey to the Sun, which received the
Blue Angel Award and the Peace Prize in Berlin, among other prizes. Her third film,
Waiting for the Clouds, was awarded NHK Sundance International Filmmaker’s
Award. Ustaoğlu’s fourth film, Pandora’s Box, which tells the story of an old
woman with Alzheimer’s disease, won the Best Film and Best Actress awards at San
Sebastian. After screening at numerous international festivals and winning many
awards, the film obtained theatrical release in several countries around the world.

The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony in rural Anatolia.
A middle-aged groom with a large moustache and his bride, covered in a red bridal veil; guests
dancing around them and guns fired into the air: an extravagant wedding ceremony is being held
with two bands of drums and horns. At the end of the celebrations, which last until midnight, the
bride is led ceremoniously to the bridal chamber. The bride and her sister-in-law are then left alone in
the room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on, the
camera remains inside the bridal chamber. With her face draped in a red veil, the bride sits waiting
for the groom, reacting oddly to the noises she hears outside.
Reis Çelik (Ardahan, 1961) studied music and drama at the Istanbul State Conservatoire.
In 1982, he began working as an economics and political correspondent for various
national newspapers. After a succession of documentary films, he made his first
feature Let There Be Light in 1996. This was followed in 1998 by Goodbye Tomorrow,
a dramatisation of the story of late 1960s student leader Deniz Gezmiş. He made his
third feature Tales of Intransigence, an improvised docudrama about the storytelling
tradition in northeast Anatolia, in 2003.

International Filmmor Women’s Film Festival on Wheels
12 March -10 April 2011 - Istanbul, Antalya, Mardin, Trabzon
Filmmor Women’s Film Festival is held every year in Istanbul and goes
on to tour different cities at the invitation and with the support of
other women’s organizations. Festival screenings are categorized into
sections carrying themes like ‘violence against women’, ‘honour’ and
‘body’. The programme also focuses on the place of women’s cinema
and includes collective presentations, Q&A sessions, panel discussions
and workshops. Intentionally, there is no competition section, a
decision based on the argument that women don’t need to compete
with each other, whereas they do need to stick together. The festival
provides the opportunity for women to be together with their dreams,
ideas, productions, to watch women’s experiences as told by women
and to watch examples of cinema that rarely reach commercial theatres.

Filmekimi
7-15 October 2011 - Istanbul
First organized in 2002, the Autumn Film Week-Filmekimi was
conceived as a compact, one- week film festival that takes place in
October, heralding the new, upcoming cinema season in Turkey. From
2006 to 2008, Filmekimi conducted a film competition for digitally-shot
short films incorporated within the International Istanbul Film Festival
in April. In 2009, the film week was expanded in response to audience
interest to include two weekends and last for nine days. The Filmekimi
programme typically includes 20-21 films screened at one or two
movie theatres, and a gala screening each evening. A total audience of
42,000 was attained in 2010.
