COURSE DESCRİPTİON:
This course covers the fundamental musical theories necessary for students to read, write, perform and understand music. Provides preliminary
information on the fundamental music theories.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course covers issues such as fundamental concepts of music, methods of prolonging times (point, fermata, prolongation ties), sentence tie,
mode, scale, degree, former Greek scales, major scales, minor scales, chromatic scale, full sound scale, pentatonic scale, tonality,
embellishments, abbreviations in notation, articulation, three sounds and cycles, four sounds and cycles, septets, dominant septets, cadences,
modulation, alteration, transpose, harmony, counterpoint, higher tones, arrangement, and tetrachord.
COURSE METHODOLOGY:
Basically the explanation and application method is employed in the lessons. Question&answer and discussion methods and applications on
piano are also employed in order to strengthen the data given to students. In addition, certain assignments covering the issues to be discussed
throughout the term will be given to students and these assignments will be influential on the grade they get in examinations.
REQUIRED&PROPOSED MATERIALS:
Since the course will be made by using explanation and application methods, written sources on the subject matter are obtained and piano for
application is provided.

1st Week Introduction, information on the course and the course program, introduction of the course, explaining the objectives, explanations on
assignments to be given and on the sources. Musical sound, non-musical sound, features of musical sounds, tuning sound, intonation, resonance,
octaves, full sound, half sound, changing marks.
2nd Week Diatonic difference, chromatic difference, non-harmonic difference, music writing, silent and non silent times (notes, rests), correct
writing of silent and non silent times, keys, relation between keys.
3rd Week Stave, additional lines, measure, measure line, short measure, time mark, equipment, strong time, weak time, rhythm.
4th Week Double line, return, stave sections, return to beginning, segno, coda, accolade, time prolongation methods (point, fermata,
prolongation ties), sentence tie, syllable tie.
5th Week Mode, scale, degree, ancient Greek scales, major scales
6th Week Minor scales.
7th Week Chromatic scale, full sound scale, pentatonic scale.
8th Week Written evaluation covering the discussed topics.
9th Week Tonality, quartet cycle, quintet cycle (equipment-tonal equipment), major tonality with sharp, major tonality with flat, minor tonality
(relevant minors), minor scales.
10th Week Trilogy, quadruply, quintuple, sextuplet, decimole, embellishments, abbreviations in notation, articulations.
