MATCH PRESS KIT
Match background
Trabzonspor AŞ face unfamiliar opponents in LOSC Lille Métropole for their first home game in the UEFA Champions
League group stage in what will be the teams' maiden meeting.
• The Turkish team are the surprise early leaders of Group B having marked their debut in the competition with a 1-0
victory at 2010 winners FC Internazionale Milano on matchday one. French champions Lille also looked on course
for three points as they took a 2-0 lead at home to PFC CSKA Moskva but the Russian side rallied in the last 20
minutes to rescue a draw.
Match background
• Trabzonspor's last home game against Ligue 1 opponents ended in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Toulouse FC in the
2009/10 UEFA Europa League play-offs. A 1-0 second-leg win in France was not enough to keep the Turkish team
in the competition.
• They had more joy in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup second round against Olympique Lyonnais, winning 4-3 away and 4-1
at home.
• Lille have previously faced Turkish opponents just once, coming out on top against Fenerbahçe SK in the 2009/10
UEFA Cup round of 32 thanks to a 2-1 win at home and 1-1 away draw.
• Trabzonspor lost in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round in 2005/06 having gone out in the third
qualifying round the previous season. In a total of four home games in the competition since 2004/05, including this
season's third qualifying round, they have won two games, lost one and drew the other.
• Between 1976/77 and 1984/85 five of their six European Champion Clubs' Cup campaigns ended in the first round
after they had reached the second round in their first tilt at the competition.
• In 11 European Cup home games Trabzonspor have won seven and lost two, scoring 14 goals and conceding eight.
• Last season's Turkish Super League runners-up were given a place in the group stage after the Turkish Football
Association (TFF) withdrew Fenerbahçe from the competition. Trabzonspor had earlier gone out in the third qualifying
round to SL Benfica, losing 2-0 away before a 1-1 home draw in which Adrian Mierzejewski was shown a red card.
• Lille's fourth participation in Europe's elite club competition followed last season's league and cup double in France.
They last took part in the group stage in 2006/07 when they reached the round of 16, losing both legs to Manchester
United FC 1-0.
• Their last group stage away game resulted in a 2-0 victory against AC Milan with Peter Odemwingie and Kader Keïta
on the scoresheet, a result that secured a place in the knockout rounds for the first time. It was the Dogues' first away
victory in nine attempts in the group stage; five of the previous eight fixtures had been lost.
Team ties
• Róbert Vittek was at Lille from 2008 to 2010, scoring seven goals in 38 Ligue 1 appearances.
• Ireneusz Jeleń and Ludovic Obraniak are team-mates with Adrian Mierzejewski, Arkadiusz Glowacki and the Brożek
twins in the Poland national team.
• Didier Zokora played for AS Saint-Étienne in 2004/05 and 2005/06, losing five of the six games he played against
Lille and drawing the other.
• Joe Cole faced Trabzonspor twice last season with Liverpool FC in the UEFA Europa League play-offs. The English
club won 3-1 on aggregate, Cole missing a first-leg penalty at Anfield.
• Jeleń and Mierzejewski played together at Wisła Płock from 2003 to 2006.
• Vahid Halilhodžić has coached both sides, leading Lille in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League in what was the
last of his four seasons at the French club. He spent the 2005/06 campaign in charge of Trabzonspor.

1997, claiming the Turkish Cup in 1995 and a league runners-up spot in 1996.
• After brief spells with Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor he was appointed Turkish national team coach in 2000 and
proved an immediate hit, leading the country not only to their first FIFA World Cup finals in 48 years but all the way
to the semi-finals, and third place, of the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan.
• Left Turkey job after failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004 and returned to Trabzonspor but reign was brief and he
later resurfaced in Korea Republic – the scene of his greatest triumph – with FC Seoul.
• Returned to Trabzonspor for the fourth time in December 2009 and led club to Turkish Cup and Super Cup triumph
the following year, Trabzonspor then finishing second in the 2010/11 Süper Lig.
LOSC Lille Métropole: Rudi Garcia
Date of birth: 20 February 1964
Nationality: French
Playing career: LOSC Lille Métropole, SM Caen, FC Martigues
Coaching career: AS Corbeil-Essonne (player/coach), AS Saint-Étienne, Dijon FCO, Le Mans UC 72, LOSC Lille
Métropole
• The son of former Lille player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as an
attacking midfielder at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues
(1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching.
• Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonne, whom
he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Etienne in 1998.
• Worked as head coach for the first time in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme from January 2001 but the pair did not
last long. Garcia re-emerged as coach of Dijon in 2002, winning promotion to Ligue 2 in 2003/04 and taking the club
to the French Cup semi-finals.
• Spent five years at Dijon before returning to Ligue 1 as coach of Le Mans in 2007; led the club to a ninth-placed
finish in his only season in charge.
• Brought to Lille as Claude Puel's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season only
to be brought back into the fold. His side topped Ligue 1 at the turn of 2011, making them winter champions for the
first time since 1949, and went on to take their third league title – and first since 1954 – before completing a domestic
double with victory in the Coupe de France.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones
• Holders FC Barcelona are bidding to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group
stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000
and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage).
• In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate
in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.
• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club
to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester
United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.
• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in
2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record
was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07
at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF
on matchday six.
• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's
11 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.
• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years
and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then
sent off in the 37th minute.
• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195
days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
• Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real
Madrid.
• Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93),
Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage).
• Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including
MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC
Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva
and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group
stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98).
• Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona
scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage.
• MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by
Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96.
• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF
(2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one.
• Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva
went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on
matchday three of the same campaign.
• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for
a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04
Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus
both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
