Avec 51% des spectateurs pour les films nationaux en 2006, chiffre record après déjà
une très bonne performance en 2005 (41%), le cinéma turc se porte relativement bien,
au moins sur son marché. La Turquie est le pays du programme Euromed qui produit le
plus de films malgré un soutien institutionnel qui reste assez faible par rapport au
nombre de films produits. Le cinéma turc a aussi connu un nouvel élan à l’international
grâce au succès de Uzak de Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Grand Prix du festival de Cannes en 2002,
succès confirmé par Iklimler, à nouveau en compétition à Cannes en 2006 .
Pour autant, ce ne sont pas les films art-et-essai qui expliquent l’incroyable part de
marché du cinéma local. Cette forte présence du cinéma turc sur son marché national est
d’abord dû à des comédies, drames et autres films d’action grand public, appréciés par
un public qui peut aussi profiter d’un prix du billet relativement bas, dans un large réseau
de salles.
With a record of 51% market share for local films in 2006, compared to 41% in 2005, the
Turkish cinema is doing quite well. Turkey is the Euromed country that produces the
biggest amount of films although the institutional support is quite low in comparison with
the number of films produced. Turkish cinema has been put again under the international
spotlights thanks to the success of Uzak by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Grand Prix of the 2002
Cannes Film Festival, followed by Iklimler in 2006.
However, arthouse films are not responsible for this incredible market share of the local
cinema. This strong presence of the Turkish cinema on its national market is first due to
mainstream comedies, dramas and action movies that can attract a big audience, thanks
to a wide network of theatres and a quite low ticket price.
