Does he ever feel worn out? “No,” he told me while
emptying a longline that was 750 meters long and
lined with 300 hooks baited with peeled shrimp
(juicy morsels meant to attract hungry cod). “I’m
enjoying the freedom that comes with this job,” he
said.
One by one fish broke the surface, plentiful and
of varying sizes, many weighing over ten kilos. The
biggest cod Iversen ever caught weighed 42 kilos, and
it’s common for him to catch fish weighing 20 kilos
or more. With one quick cut he slit a fish’s artery and
emptied its blood. For good reason: “That’s so the
quality of the meat is better,” he said.
Iversen is positive about both his work and the
area. He has seen a change for the better in the fishery he’s been working in for the last four decades.
“There is more fish now than when I was a child,” he
told me, "and it’s all down to our management.”
The Norwegian cod fishing industry is often
given as an example of one of the most sustainable and successful in fishing. You might assume
it was oil that built Norway, but actually it was skrei,
cod of the highest quality that migrate towards the
Norwegian coast in January through March. Overuse of the natural resource led to a crash in the Barents Sea in the 1980s. But in a partnership created
with the organization Marine Stewardship Council
(MSC), all cod fisheries and their entire fleet in Lo-

foten were MSC-certified in 2011, which meant regulations were put in place and illegal fishing was targeted. It worked: today, illegal fishing has dropped
to an insignificant level. And in 2015, an increasing
awareness of fishing standards among customers
around the world lead to a 20 percent rise in Norwegian cod exports. During the four hours we are at sea
together, Iversen emptied the well-stuffed lines and
pulled up 1.2 ton of cod by himself, without so much
as a shred of fatigue.
Even though the Gulf Stream warms the Norwegian Sea, which makes the climate here milder than
in other places at the same latitude, icy arctic winds
sweep through the area and summer temperatures
rarely surpass 15 degrees. If there is one thing Iversen sometimes wishes for, it’s a warmer climate. “But
I just take my family on vacation,” he said with a
grin, “to countries like Turkey.”
