WELCOME: RECTOR’S WORD
WELCOME: RECTOR’S WORD
.............................................................................................
Dear students, teachers and associates,
This Guide for Study Programs of the University of Sarajevo tries to present the rich offer of study
programs of our Academies and Faculties.
Mobility, as an important factor of the Bologna Process, implies a residence at the host university,
where students have more possibilities to expand their linguistic, cultural knowledge, as well as
the knowledge gained through the education. At the same time, it is believed that mobility
contributes to the better transparency and acknowledgement of studies and qualifications, in
accordance with EU rules and Bologna process in this area.
With a goal to make international relations even stronger, we have prepared a certain number of
guides that will take you through the rich tradition of the University of Sarajevo, the City of
Sarajevo and of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We want to ease the process of mobility to all students
and staff members who decide to spend certain period at the most respected higher education
institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This guide will provide you information about University of Sarajevo, academic calendar with a
timetable of classes and events, and http links of all faculties and academies. We believe that this
information will be of use to you during your selection of a desired study program and residence
at our University.
Good luck,
Rector

WHY CHOOSE SARAJEVO?
SARAJEVO!
A city or a living legend?
THE STORY OF THE CITY
Sarajevo is the capital and the largest city of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, with a population of 291.422* living in
the four municipalities that make up the city area, and
total of 438.443* citizens living in the wider area of the
Sarajevo Canton. It is also the capital city of the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Entity, as well as
the administrative centre of the Sarajevo Canton.
Sarajevo is located in the Sarajevo valley, surrounded by
the Dinaric Alps, and situated around the Miljacka
River.
HISTORY
Although the first settlements in the area date back to
prehistoric times, the modern city developed as an
Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Sarajevo has
attracted international attention several times
throughout its history: in 1914 it was the site of the
assassination of the Austrian heir to the throne, the
event that triggered the World War I, while seventy
years later it became the host City of the 1984 Winter
Olympics. More recently, Sarajevo went through the
longest siege in the modern military history, during the
Aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, the city
is recovering and adjusting to a post-agression reality,
as a major centre of culture and economic
development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interestingly,
Sarajevo was also the first city in Europe and the
second city in the world to have a full-time operational
electric tram network running through the city.
Experience for yourself the warm welcome and the
historical richness that makes Sarajevo unique. But
remember, once you come here you will always want to
return. Walk down Baščaršija and you will still see a
mixture of traditional craft stalls next to contemporary
fashion retailers. Every few steps there are an ancient
chapel, mosque or other religious monument.
Sarajevo has been the meeting point between East and
West for hundreds of years, the place where time
seems to freeze. Many civilizations and Empires have
passed through this city, each of them leaving traces
behind that can be found all over. In just a few hundred
meters in Sarajevo, Catholic and Orthodox churches,
mosques and Jewish synagogues proudly stand side by
side. Centuries have passed by and they still stand out,
welcoming travelers.
Just in one place you can find unbelievable natural
beauty and richness this country possesses, all
historical monuments you need to visit, as well as all
tourist attractions that wait for you to come. Find some
time to enjoy the beauties the city of Sarajevo and the
whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina have to offer. Do not
miss exploring some of the witnesses of history and
times long past, monuments that still preserve the
spirit of the old times and remain seals of historical
events.

SIEGE OF SARAJEVO
SIEGE OF SARAJEVO
.............................................................................................
SIEGE OF SARAJEVO
The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege in the history of
modern warfare. It took place during the Agression on
Bosnia and Herzegovina, on one side having the poorly
equipped defending forces of the B&H Government, after
the independance referendum held on 29 February and 1
March 1992, and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and
Paramilitary forces formed of the part of Bosnian Serbs
who, located on the hills around Sarajevo, besieged the city
from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996. The siege brought
about dramatic human casualties and large scale
destruction. Total 11.541 people were killed and 50.000
wounded during the siege, 85% of all casualties were
civilians. Due to killings and forced migration, by 1995 the
population of Sarajevo decreased to 334.663 or 64% of the
pre-war population. The siege of Sarajevo has been
declared officially over after almost four years of
continuous shelling and sniper attacks. Under the terms of
the Dayton Peace Agreement, signed in December 1995,
the war ended. The reconstruction of Sarajevo started as
soon as the war ended. Modern office buildings and
skyscrapers have since been constructed throughout the
city.

for, is the integration into the world academic processes
and continuous efforts towards the improvement of our
international reputation. Through its teaching and

responsible for educating competent, capable, creative
and internationally recognizable professionals in all
areas of interest to Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to
be able to provide quality professional services in
modern economy in the political, social, legal and
cultural context of Europe and the world.
The main objective of all the university's current
activities is to raise the quality of studies, to create a
contemporary university of European origins, which
will respectably represent Bosnia & Herzegovina on
international level and to promote the traditional,
historical, cultural, scientific and artistic values of the
South - Eastern Europe.
BOLOGNA EDUCATION SYSTEM
In September 2003, Bosnia and Herzegovina signed
and accepted the European strategic goals in the field
of higher education, as expressed in the Declaration of
the European Higher Education Ministers made in
Bologna (1999), as well as the subsequent
development of this concept. In 2000, the first project
by model 3+2 was implemented at the Faculty of
Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The first
‘’Bologna’’ generation of the University of Sarajevo (I
cycle) was enrolled in 2005, the II cycle in 2008 and
the III cycle in 2010. Changed model to Bologna
process implementation happened during the period
2012-2014.

The University of Sarajevo enjoys partnerships with
over 100 universities in Europe, the USA, Canada, and

UNIVERSITY PROFILE
MOBILITY
Thanks to partnerships in numerous international
projects, between 2008 and 2015 the University of
Sarajevo had a over of 3.300 mobility visits. All these
mobility visits were accompanied by the European
learning agreement and grade transcript. It should be
noted that some 1.500 students from the region, nonB&H nationals, study at our University, and are subject
to special facilities granted to students from countries
of former Yugoslavia.
DAAD
As part of the DAAD project that has been going on
for several years, initiated by the Stability Pact for
South Eastern Europe, six courses were held in
Sarajevo in different areas of mathematical sciences,
for doctoral candidates and young researchers from
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria,
Montenegro, Croatia, Kosovo,* Macedonia, Moldova,
Germany, Romania, and Serbia. At the same time,

our University in the same period.
ERASMUS MUNDUS
In 2008, the European Union gave Bosnia and
Herzegovina an opportunity to participate in a
programme designed for countries not participating in
ERASMUS as the largest programme for financial and
organisational incentive for academic mobility. Since
then, the University of Sarajevo has been participating
in each of the Erasmus Mundus projects financed by
European Commission. This makes University of
Sarajevo the only university in the region to
participate in all Erasmus Mundus programs (from
2008 until 2015 - a total of 19), thus allowing
students, professors and TAs to select from among 48
universities in EU member states.
At the same time, organisational units of our
University hosted students and faculty members from
the EU. The following projects were implemented as
part of the ERASMUS MUNDUS programme: BASILEUS
I-V, JoinEU-SEE I-V, STEM, SIGMA, EUROWEB I-II,
ERAWEB. Within these projects alone, a total of 273
students and faculty members visited universities in
EU member states, and our University hosted 175
students and faculty members. As of academic

In the period between 1996 and 2014, including the
TEMPUS preparatory phase, the University of Sarajevo
participated in a total of 103 TEMPUS projects; of
that, in 83 as a partner, in 16 as the academic
coordinator, and in four as the grant holder. Since
2008, the University of Sarajevo has been the grant
holder in four TEMPUS projects and currently
participates in 23. A number of mobility visits by
University of Sarajevo professors and TAs to partner
universities in the EU have been part of these
projects, as have visits by partner university Faculty
members to the University of Sarajevo. Numerous
study visits and training events have been organised
as well.

WHY CHOOSE UNIVERSITY OF SARAJEVO?
STUDY STRUCTURE
The three-cycle system of study at the University of
Sarajevo leads to the following academic titles:
bachelor, upon completion of the first cycle, master,
upon completion of the second cycle, and doctor of
science/arts, upon completion of the third cycle. An
integrated programme of the first and second cycle at
schools of the medical group leads to the title of a
doctor of medicine/dental medicine/veterinary
medicine, and a master of pharmacy.
TEACHING LANGUAGE
The majority of courses and study programmes are in
Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (B/C/S) and it is required that
candidates have some level of knowledge of the host
country's language before arrival. Bosnian/Croatian/
Serbian are languages with three different language
standards and minor regional variations. However, there
are cases where complete study programmes are in
English (such as the programmes offered by the Centre
for Interdisciplinary Studies, and by the School of
Economics and Business which offers undergraduate
and postgraduate joint programmes in cooperation with
the Griffith College Dublin, Faculty of Business), or
where certain courses can be provided in English.
Please contact the administration of the institution you
are interested in, and ask for course descriptions and
language requirements. The University of Sarajevo
member institutions offer a variety of study
programmes within the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral
level of studies. As of Academic 2015/2016, first
generation will be enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine
where the classes of instruction will be held in English.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
It can be said that scientific research in Bosnia and
Herzegovina is in an alarming situation; the country lags
behind in this area and this reflects more and more on
its weakened competitiveness and low productivity of
its economy, as well as its position on the regional
and the global market. However, due mainly to personal
efforts by Faculty members both during and after the
war, the University managed to maintain its status of
the most prestigious and the most developed scientific
and higher education institution in the country.
Scientific and artistic research at the University of
Sarajevo is mainly located at Faculties, Academies and
institutes in the areas of medicine, technical studies,
natural science, botanical studies, social studies,
humanities and arts.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
The University of Sarajevo welcomes academic
and non-academic staff from all over the world
into our academic community. Our university
strongly promotes international mobility,
focussing on the importance of a tolerant and
democratic international environment for
students' successful learning, scientific and
artistic research as well as their personal
development.
Before applying, staff applicants need to have
an already established contact with the host
university (University of Sarajevo) in order to
guarantee that the profile of the staff matches
the thematic expertise of the host university.
Iztok Prezelj
University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
More information regarding the staff mobility,
especially about Faculties and Academies and
its departments can be found in this guide, but
we encourage you to contact our International
Relations Office for additional information.
If the staff mobility is a part of any
mobility program/project (e. g.
Erasmus Mundus), therefore rules for
the whole process of application are applied
according to that program/project.
I was able to work on scientific issues
and also forge tight contacts with the
staff in order to improve future
cooperation. I also got to know
Sarajevo and B&H which will
influence my future writing
about the region and
relationship to EU and NATO.

topics such as Chemistry
About the programmes
There is much overlap between
chemistry and other scientific
subjects. Chemical processes and
the composition of elements play a
large part in the study of living
organisms and matter’s relationship
to forces. At undergraduate level,
this will often take the form of
elective modules, though
specialized courses are also an
option. Graduate study will certainly
involve specialization.

About the programmes
The study of linguistics exists in
order to help us understand the
abstract noises and shapes which
we use to communicate with each
other, the differences between
them and what they mean, the rules
which govern them, and how we
understand them. This considers
studying literary texts, films, history,
politics and media, and usually also
means spending time studying or
working in a country where your
language of choice is spoken.
Different modern language degrees
will have a different emphasis –
some perhaps more focused on the
study of literary texts, others more
on contemporary contexts or on
vocational training.
TEACHING
Teaching methods include lectures,
seminars and personal tutorials,
practical sessions, guest speakers.
This is all arranged in correlation

LANGUAGE
Lectures are given in

language departments the lectures
are given in language that is an
object of study. For other subjects,
you have to check with the Faculty’s
International Relations Department
whether they give the opportunity

CAREER OPTIONS
Interpreters, travel journalists, and
teachers are a few of the professions
modern language and literature
degree graduates undertake. But in
fact practically every employment
sector, from commerce to social
services, requires people who are
proficient in different languages.
Opportunities for archaeologists
exist within museums, heritage
agencies and local government but
the skills you'll get from the degree
open up doors to many different
careers.

RESEARCH
OPPORTUNITIES
ABOUT
Scientific research in Bosnia and
Herzegovina can be said to be in an
alarming situation; the country lags
behind in this area and this reflects
more and more on its weakened
competitiveness and low
productivity of its economy, as well
as its position on the regional
and the global market. It is
particularly noteworthy that in the
given circumstances, interestingly,
the areas of competence of the
University of Sarajevo noted by
relevant international scientific
databases grew in previous period.
According to the Elsevier indicators,
the increase is mainly due to new
research in clinical disciplines,
whereas mathematics and physics
stand out in terms of the level of
competence. The University of
Sarajevo will always try to contribute
to the research mission, especially
focusing on intellectual,
technological, economic ans social
developments. Our University covers
a broad range of research activities,
including basic research, applied
research and development research.
The top-class science and research
performed at Faculties, Academies,
Centres and Institutes of learning
thrives on intensive cooperation
between scientists, academics,
research organisations and
institutes, both at home and abroad.
In addition to higher education
institutions, academic researchers
do have a possibility to do their
research in the collaborations with
our Centres and Institutes.
HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER
It was founded with the goal of
providing the University with a
possibility to get organized and be
able for the confident and expert
implementing of international
human rights. Its mission is to
contribute to the implementation of
international human rights through
information dissemination
processes and providing necessary
documentation, lectures, expert
advice, research and reporting and
publishing relevant materials.
The Center is an interdisciplinary
body and is co-operating with other
similar institutions, nongovernmental organisations and
national and international bodies
dealing with human rights issues. Its
activities include national as well as
international domain.

Ilona Jerič
University of Ljubljana
SLOVENIA
My Basileus exchange in Sarajevo was very fruitful for understanding
different social enviorments, meeting new people and last but not least
my diploma thesis research. Living in a city and country that has such a
strog presence of historical political components in everyday life
requires recontextualization of previously obtained knowledge about
environment. But at the same point this circumstance elicits different
opinions in communication, which motivated intensiveness of my
observations, participations and knowledge-absorption process. Also
my staying at the department for Comparative Literature and at
Bosnian-Hercegovian Literature Department was valuable for insight in
Bosnian-Hercegovian literature thesaurus and the research questions
arising out of it. Out of the study coordinates - Sarajevo was really nice
and inspirational experience; good music, good food, beautiful
surroundings and charismatic people.

EXPERIENCE

Francesca Valente, University of Bologna, ITALY
Sarajevo welcomes you with all its contrasts which
actually make you feel part of it, integrated in it, at home.
The orientation week was perfectly organized and
amazing, I met all the other EM students which became,
in the following months, my friends. IRO personnel and
former Erasmus students where so kind and helpful! A
Bosnian language course was organized for us, some trips
to Mostar, Počitelj and Srebrenica too and everything was
thought to let us feel comfortable and safe. Since I was a
PhD exchange student I didn’t have the opportunity to
attend courses, but all the personnel of the Faculty of
Political science, and also the students there were actually
kind with me, helping in the things I needed.
Franka Gulin, University of Zagreb, CROATIA
This scholarship was the one of the best things that happened in my life. I
met fabulous people, made friendships, ate fantastic food and worked
together with some excellent professors and colleagues. Now I am at the
end of this life adventure and I am still trying to find a way to stay a little bit
more. This was a very very good year for me. Sarajevo, I got you under my
skin!

I was looking for a place where I could work independently on my PhD thesis and related
research. Within the Erasmus Mundus programme, Sarajevo appeared to be the most
interesting city, so I picked Sarajevo. Now, 6 months later and about to leave back home, I can
see it was a good choice. My experience with academic life at the university is somewhat
limited, since I didn't participate in lectures and seminars. My stay here was research-oriented,
which meant less contact with the academia and more independent work. Such an
assignement implies a certain level of loneliness, which I also expected when coming to
Sarajevo. Well, I was wrong. The other international students turned out to be a very friendly
and enthusiastic people, always willing to go out and discover the oddities and peculiarities of
this great city, not returning home before 4 AM.

As an exchange student at the University of
Sarajevo, I had the opportunity to attend
stimulating lectures given by brilliant
professors. Conferences and parallel events
have further enriched the educational
opportunity of studying at this University.
Infrastructures of the University of Sarajevo,
such as the Human Rights Library and the
National Library of Bosnia Herzegovina have
proven a very useful tool for my studying
and researching activities. The city is a
priceless environment, offering lots of
possibilities for the free time. At same time,
its dimension makes it very accessible and
enjoyable. Cultural initiatives and the great
nature surrounding the city have made my
staying in Sarajevo an enriching experience
even outside the academy.

I am currently the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Sarajevo. I am partnered with the University of Sarajevo,
Department of Islamic Studies. Participating in an exchange to Bosnia and Herzegovina has been one of the most
enriching experiences of my life. I am very humbled my how much I have learned, and how quickly it felt like my home.
First and foremost, Sarajevo is a wonderful place to live and learn. Bosnia is a beautiful country that is unlike any other
place I have ever seen- the terrain is stunning and the people are very kind and genuine. Secondly, the Department of
Islamic Studies wan an amazing place to work - everyone was very welcoming and friendly and the students were great.
They were very enthusiastic and a pleasure to teach. I taught them conversational English and would come in weekly
with a lesson that I had designed on my own. I was excited to be given such control and liberty over what I taught them
because I was able to talk about subjects that I was passionate about, as well as occasionally play games with them to
make the learning more fun. I enjoyed the classroom environment that we had and noticed a great improvement from
when they first entered my class to when they left.
I also conducted a side project and research: my research was on political artistic performance in Sarajevo and my
project was to create a Slam Poetry (performance poetry) and Storytelling group here. Both the side project and the
research worked out really well - I learned a lot from the artistic scene in Sarajevo and partnered our poetry group,
REFLEKS, with the Sarajevo War Theater. The research was very insightful for me and directly related to the work that I
want to do in the future. I met, worked with, and learned from amazing people at the Sarajevo War Theater and
Magacin Kabare. It was also great to interact with a diverse group of writers in REFLEKS and to be able to get to know
people through writing and discussion. It was also phenomenal and inspiring to see people going from first
understanding a new art form (Slam/Performance Poetry) to seeing them really enjoy doing it and use it as a way to
express some of their deepest thoughts and feelings.
All in all, I am thrilled with my experienced and know that I have made some life long friends as a result of my
experience on my Fulbright. I would recommend exchange programs such as Fulbright to everyone, because it is a
great opportunity to grow and learn.

I have really liked Sarajevo since my first visit there in 2006. I have generally liked
study stay abroad and as I had been already in Vienna, I wanted rather in a postcommunistic country. I wanted to learn Bosnian (Serbian, Croatian), which had been
for my almost new language but on the other side quite similar to manage it quickly, I
hoped. My impression was very good, I was only sad that I could not stay longer.
However, I would have appreciated more classes of Bosnian (or maybe i.e. three days
intensive course at the beginning).
The other thing which doesn’t concern directly international students, but all of the
students is the fact that some professors (or assistants) were not always in their
offices during their consultation time, without leaving a note of absence. On the
other side, they were friendly when they spoke with me (us) and they generally tried
to do the best for us.

I decided to apply Basileus project in 2009/2010 when I was in my 3rd year of studies at my home
University in Zagreb, because I knew that was a perfect period and a great opportunity to experience a
student exchange. I had chosen Sarajevo for my exchange because it is a city with rich history and it's
widely known for the hospitality of its citizens towards anyone who comes to Sarajevo. What also helped
me in my decision was the fact that my home faculty - Faculty of Economics and Business Zagreb - has
signed a cooperation agreement with Faculty of Economics of Sarajevo, which made some procedures
connected to the exchange a lot simpler and easyer.
My first impression when I came to Sarajevo was just as I expected. People were very kind and helpful,
both at the Unversity of Sarajevo and at the Faculty of Economics. And I really had lots of questions,
especially in the beginning. I was also connected to ESN Sarajevo, which offered their assistance in any
possible situation. There were also organized some meetings with other exchange students at the
University.
I have to point out that I had a very good relations with all my professors and assistants. I was accepted as
any other student of the Faculty and I had all the same rights and obligations. Some professors offered
their recommendation letter after the exchange and I also got the book "Seven Habits of Very Successful
People" from professor Aziz Šunje and his assistant Emir Kurtić for the success on their course.
My general impression of the mobility was great, it is definitely an experience that every student should
try to gain at least once in his student period. I would definitely apply again and repeat everything. In the
end, here is my message to anyone who is in doubt is: the longer you think whether to apply to an
exchange or not, the closer you are to the point when you will regret! Some people spend their whole
(student) life in thinking!

I chose Sarajevo because of my previous visit during the film festival, where I feel in love
with the city. If you are looking for something else, not the classic Erasmus story, Sarajevo is
the perfect choice. The city itself is big enough for a full and vibrant student life and small
enough to meet your new friends on the street and have a coffee or beer with them in one of
the many charming cafés or bars.
EXPERIENCE
.............................................................................................
Sarajevo is different than the cities in Western or Central Europe, the mix of eastern,
western and socialist architecture, the rich and multicultural history, the warm and
talkative people and last but not least the local food and beverages, which offer you a great
diversity and an experience you will never forget.
In the end there is only one right option for your Erasmus stay and once you are there and
you drink water from the fountain in the Baščaršija old center you will not only always come
back to Sarajevo, as the legend says, but you will never want to leave the city with its
surrounding Olympic mountains .
