The Computer Science Student Workshop (CSW) series is initiated by Esra Erdem
(Sabancı University) and Metin Sezgin (Koç University) to bring Computer Science
and Engineering graduate students at Sabancı University, Koç University, and other
universities in Istanbul in a semiformal workshop atmosphere. This workshop
exposes the graduate students to the concepts of academic writing, peer review,
research presentation, critical thinking as well as academic way of thinking in general.
The students also establish connections in this semiformal environment via meeting
each other, sharing ideas, and getting feedback on their work. The ultimate goal of
this workshop series is to form a network of young researchers who will support each
other and establish a core group of senior graduate student leaders, who will serve
as mentors and role models for the coming generation. Therefore, the workshop is
organized by graduate students and for graduate students: all organizing committee
members and program committee members (including chairs) are students, and the
submission is open to student papers only.

The First Computer Science Student Workshop (CSW’10) took place at the İstinye
Campus of Koç University, Istanbul, on February 21, 2010. It was sponsored by
Sabancı University and Koç University. It was organized by 30 graduate students
from various universities in Istanbul: 4 out of 8 Organizing Committee members and 7
out of 30 Program Committee members were SU graduate students.
CSW'10 received 50 paper submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least 3
referees. Out of 50 submissions, 16 of them were accepted for oral presentation, and
15 of them were accepted for poster presentation. There were 17 submissions from
Sabancı University; 5 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 6 papers were
accepted for poster presentation. The proceedings of the workshop (including only
the accepted papers with publication-permissions) is nicely prepared as an e-book by
Information Center, and can be found in the collections of Information Center and in
Research Database:

More than 60 graduate/undergraduate students from all over Istanbul attended
CSW'10; more than 20 of these participants were from Sabanci University. The
workshop consisted of 4 sessions of oral presentations and 3 poster sessions. The
oral presentation sessions were categorized into three main groups; namely "Artificial
Intelligence", "Network and Security", and "Bioinformatics, Data Mining, and
Computer Architecture". The presented papers covered a wide range of Computer
Science research, from Music-Driven Choreography Synthesis to Analysis of Protein
Interfaces.
The workshop committee gave 11 awards to some students for their exceptional
work, under the following categories: "Best Tool Paper", "Best Research Paper",
"Best Work-in-Progress Paper", "Best Poster", "Best Presentation", and "Best
Reviewer”. Here are the SU Awardees:
