. 200 . . 201 . İSL AM BİLİM TARİHİ MÜZESİ’NİN SERÜVENİ THE JOURNEY OF THE MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF SCIENCE IN ISL AM Mezopotamya’nın kadim toprağı olan Harran Ovası üzerinde, İslam medeniyetinin bilim ve teknik alanındaki uzun serüvenini anlatan bir müze tasarlamak... . 202 . Designing a museum in the Harran Plains, which is the land of Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, presenting the long journey of science and technology in the Islamic civilization.... Representing the facts of the past involving the scientific developments and inventions as well as their inventors with no speculation, propaganda, or historic bias... Keeping the main characteristics of the building visible and incorporating the opportunities provided by the modern architecture, creating a venue in which artifacts are displayed at their best... Such a difficult task would only be possible with the right team and good planning, and the outcome is beyond our imagination reflecting the magnificence and beauty of such a great civilization and strong tradition.... . 203 . Tarihî Bir Okul Binasından İslam Bilim Tarihi Müzesi’ne From a historic school building to the Museum of History of Science in Islam Müze için belediye tarafından tahsis edilen bina 19. yüzyılın başlarında yapımı tamamlanmış bir okul binasıydı. . 204 . The building allocated by the municipality for the museum was a school building constructed in early 19th century. The high number of windows as well as their length, which is longer than those of the modern buildings, affected the general approach for renovation. The architectural style of the building was troublesome in terms of our placement plan because the light wells of the building restrict the wall zone and thus the placement of the exhibits. Designing an interior space contradicting the original structure of the building would be unfair, or even disrespectful, to the building. Another important problem was regarding the mismatch of air vents and ceiling details in terms of material elements. It was impossible to start the project before solving these problems. These problems were revisited during the workshops in which the concept and story of the museum were discussed, and the architects were part of the team when these discussions took place. After long studies and debates, the curator team decided to incorporate the building as part of the concept and story of the museum, despite the aforementioned problems. Since the Muslim inventors and scientists lived a modest life and conducted their studies in a workshop environment with limited resources, the space was planned to be restored as an ancient workshop environment. This idea was first realized in 3D and the end-result was quite satisfactory. This approach also addressed the problems related with the wall niches; they became a natural part of the workshop. Besides, one of the functions of such a workshop was education, which overlaps the original function of the space. . 205 . 19. DÖNÜŞTÜRÜRKEN BU TARİHÎ YAPIYI GERİ PLANA İTMEDEN, ONA HAKSIZLIK ETMEDEN, AKSİNE BİNAYI HİKÂYENİN Next step was to make a decision about the material to be used in the fabrication of workshop benches and other exhibit elements. Wood was naturally an inevitable option as the main fabrication material. The problem at this point was aging or weathering the wood to make them look like they are a few centuries old. Because there is no certain way to accomplish this, we decided to use naturally aged wood. To this end, railroad ties or sleepers discarded from 1950s were located in Turkey and abroad and samples were examined in our workshops. In order to get rid of the smell ingrained into the logs, they were needed to be sheared and aired for a long time; however, because of the time restraints imposed for the opening of the museum, we did not have the time to complete this process. In order to overcome this problem, a solvent-, thinner-, and paint-free special aging treatment, composed of all-natural oils BİR PARÇASI ŞEKLİNDE KURGULAYARAK HAREKET EDİLDİ. Nihayetinde teorik bilginin mahir ellerle buluşması sayesinde bu meşakkatli sürecin üstesinden gelinebildi. and mixtures, was obtained. However, this mixture resulted in varying results in terms of the appearance of the wood. Therefore, the right species of tree was needed to be discovered. After careful deliberation, oak was found to be our best option. We were aware that the humidity of the logs would be crucial because when they are dried in time, cracks will occur, and oak is one of the most susceptible wood species in this regard. Because the fabrication facility was not in Istanbul and Gaziantep is the location of implementation, it was too risky and we needed to be extra careful. Eventually, due to the careful practice of the theoretical knowledge by a group of skillful people, we were able to complete the process successfully. WHEN CONVERTING THIS 19TH CENTURY SCHOOL BUILDING TO THE MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE IN ISLAM, WE TRIED NOT TO HIDE ITS CHARACTERISTICS, BUT RATHER TRIED TO MAKE IT PART OF THE STORY. THE SPACE WAS REDESIGNED AS AN ARCHAIC WORKSHOP WITH AN APPEARANCE DATING BACK TO HUNDREDS YEARS AGO, WHICH ALSO OVERLAPS THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION OF THE BUILDING. . 207 . Bin Yıllık Tarihi Yeniden Üretmek A Reproduction of a History of a Thousand Years 100 ITEMS, CAREFULLY SELECTED BY A GROUP HISTORY OF ISLAMIC SCIENCE EXPERTS, WERE EXPLORED THROUGH DISCOVERERS' MANUSCRIPTS AND EXPLORERS' MEMOIRS AND THEY WERE REPRODUCED BY DEXTEROUS MASTERS WITH THE HELP OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY. İSLAM BİLİM TARİHİ UZMANLARI TARAFINDAN BELİRLENEN 100 ADET ALET EL YAZMALARI, MUCİTLERİNİN ESERLERİNDE YER VERDİKLERİ TARİFLER HATTA SEYYAHLARIN ANILARI IŞIĞINDA, TEKNOLOJİNİN SUNDUĞU SON İMKÂNLAR VE HASSAS EL İŞÇİLİĞİ YAPABİLEN USTALAR SAYESİNDE HAYAT BULDU. . 208 . Her bilim dalının farklı türde aletler kullanmış olması, benzerlerinin imalatı aşamasında onlarca farklı meslek grubuyla çalışmayı gerektirdi. Birçoğu modern dünyada kullanılmadığından üretimlerin her biri de model niteliğinde oldu. Aletlerin imalat sürecini şu şekilde özetlemek mümkün: One of the primary tasks to be accomplished in the project involved the research and reproduction of the items that will be displayed in the museum. To this end, a group of experts, composed of history of science scholars and curators, conducted research and agreed upon about 100 historical items from several scientific fields, such as astronomy, medicine, geography, and physics. Reproduction of these artifacts, which were selected among hundreds of inventions produced by Muslim scientists, reached their final destination after a multiphase process. Since a different kind of tool was used in each field of science, during the design and fabrication phases, we needed to cooperate with experts from tens of different professions. Because most of the tools are not currently used in the modern world, each artifact could be considered as a prototype. 1. Fabrication phases are described below: 1. Selection of the tools: Experts specializing in the history of science in Islam created a list of tools. Specialized group studies were needed for astronomy, physics-mechanic, geography, naval science, medicine, and chemistry. Tools that were depicted in manuscripts and whose descriptions were provided by the leading scholars of history of science in Islam were examined and selected based on their possible effects on the next generation. . 209 . 2. Technical Drawings of the Tools: All the tools were first drawn in 3D. The same experts of history of science in Islam were also involved in this phase. Especially for the accurate drawings of astrolabe, rub’u’l-mukantara, compass, or scale, details in the manuscripts were carefully outlined. Based on the type of the tool, several drawing software programs, namely AutoCAD, 3D Max, SolidWorks, Adobe Illustrator and Corel, were used, sometimes individually, sometimes 2-3 programs together. For the reproduction of Bayezid Astrolabe, all the details of the original tool were replicated. Even the design flaws depicted in the original drawings dated back to 1505-1506 were preserved. Similarly, Trigonometric Semicircle of Merrâkuşî was originally depicted only in manuscripts was re-drawn and controlled by a science historian who himself designs astronomy tools using formulas provided in the Middle tasarlayan ve aletler üzerindeki çizgileri Ortaçağ’da kullanılan formüllere dayalı olarak çizen bir bilim tarihçisi tarafından resmedildi ve denetlendi. Age resources. All prototypes were fabricated after comprehensive research in history. For instance, for the design of the 1/100 scaled model of the Samarkand Observatory, almost all Turkish and foreign resources were scanned through and also the archeological remains of the observatory, especially the foundation part, were identically replicated. In all phases of the 3D design of the tools, feedbacks and approval of the experts were obtained, and only then we moved on to the fabrication phase. . 211 . 3. Fabrication of the tools: In Turkey, there is no industrial sector focusing on replica or model fabrication for museums, so it was quite difficult to locate the few experienced artists or artisans specialized in this field. Because of the time restraints and financial considerations, we had to be excessively meticulous in the fabrication phase. The most important phases of fabrication were finding the same material that was used by the inventor, locating digital fabricators utilizing computerized drawings and providing the tangible output using the digital input, and identifying skillful artists and artisans to touch up and finalize the tools. At this point, we sometimes needed to use providers from abroad. Following the identification of the material used in the original making of the tool, we had to find out whether the current technologies would let us fabricate the tool using the same material. For some tools dating back sağlamlık ve estetik kaygılar dikkate alınarak imal edildi. Bu nedenle imalat ile meşgul olan temsilcimiz, marangozların başında bizzat bulunarak aletin istenilene uygun şekilde imal edilmesi için büyük çaba sarf etti. to 1000 years ago, we were able to identically replicate it; however, for some other tools, because their originals are not available, we had to follow the depictions and descriptions and use our judgment for aesthetics and robustness of the end product. For instance, the astrolabe named Serrâciyye was fabricated using brass based on the originals. On the other hand, brass and silver were used for the handles and heads of the medical devices, respectively. Most of the engravings on brass tools were made by acid or laser etching. Professionals from more than one field of expertise worked on each tool. Technical drawings of the medical devices, for instance, involved professionals from 5 different expertise fields, namely, technical drawings, implementation of the drawings to moulds, making the mould, making the silver pieces using the mould, and finely fine grinding, polishing, and coating of the final product. The tool named Zatu’l-Halak includes 6 circles moving in each other needed a meticulous engineering that took for weeks because of the precision required for both design and implementation. Therefore, fabrication of all the tools was closely monitored by our company representative throughout the fabrication process. . 213 . 4. Ziyaretçiyle Temas: Görsel İletişim Dili Contact with the Visitor: Visual Communication Language 4. Control and acceptance of the tools: Each tool was submitted to the corresponding history of science experts, who were involved in the research and design phase of the product, for its conformity to the original artifact. After their conformity with the resources was approved by the experts, the tools were forwarded to the related department to get them ready for display. By this way, we were able to keep the original design and prevent possible modifications imposed by fabricators. MÜZENİN ZİYARETÇİYLE KURACAĞI İLETİŞİM KONSEPTİNİN BELİRLENMESİNDE SERGİLENEN ESERLERİN DÖNEMİYLE TEZAT OLUŞTURMASI AMACIYLA MODERN GÖRSEL DİL TERCİH EDİLMİŞ VE GEREK MÜZENİN KURUMSAL KİMLİK TASARIMINDA GEREK SERGİ ALANINDAKİ BİLGİ PANOLARININ TASARIMINDA BU ANLAYIŞ KORUNMUŞTUR. . 214 . Mimari çalışmaların gerçekleştirilmesi, kullanılacak malzemenin belirlenip üretilmesi, teşhir edilecek ürünlerin yine aynı şekilde araştırılıp hayata geçirilmesi gibi aşamaların yanında müzenin ziyaretçiyle iletişim kuracak bir görsel tasarım konseptine de ihtiyacı vardı. Bu nedenle müzeyi ve sergi alanını görsel iletişim açısından kurgulama aşamasında, sergilenen eserlerin dönemiyle tezat oluşturması amacıyla modern görsel dil tercih edildi ve gerek müzenin kurumsal kimlik tasarımında gerek sergi alanındaki bilgi panolarının tasarımında bu anlayış korundu. In addition to the architectural design, research and implementation of the material to be used throughout the museum, and the fabrication of the artifacts, we needed to make a decision on the general approach to visual design concept for the museum's communication with the visitor. For the design of the museum and galleries in terms of visual communication, a modern approach was adopted to create a contrasting atmosphere with the era in which the artifacts were originally made. This contrasting approach in design was also maintained in the branding graphics as well as in the design of the information panels. . 215 . Geçmişe Yolculuğu “Aydınlatırken” "Lighting" the Path to the Past WHEN DECIDING THE MUSEUM'S CONCEPT OF COMMUNICATION WITH THE VISITOR, A CONTRADICTORY APPROACH WAS ADOPTED: A MODERN VISUAL LANGUAGE CONTRADICTING WITH THE ERA OF THE ARTICLES IN WHICH THEY WERE ORIGINALLY MADE; AND, THIS APPROACH WAS EXTENDED TO THE BRANDING AND CORPORATE IDENTITY OF THE MUSEUM AS WELL AS THE INFORMATION PANELS IN GALLERIES. . 216 . The grid structure that was used in all design works as well as structural and characteristic features of the font used in graphics reflected this concept. Accordingly, when designing the corporate identity of the museum, a customized pattern that is only composed of a font that is commonly used in Islamic culture was selected. The museum's logo, which is the primary element communicating with the visitor, included all words of the name of the museum, the Museum of History of Science in Islam; the word Islam was placed alone and the rest of the logo was grouped together, and the logo was contained in a frame to reflect the content. Readability was naturally of the utmost importance when designing the information panels for the visitors to get the message clearly. Therefore, black scripts on a white background was preferred to maximize the contrast. To increase the visitors' familiarity with world of miniatures, the objects' depiction in miniatures were contextually incorporated in information panels. One of the important design aspects of the museum was the lighting of the space and the objects. In this regard, we based our lighting concept on the visitors' uninterrupted journey to the past by focusing their attention to the objects. To reach this goal, historic texture of the building, story of the museum, and the proposed visitor experience that is framed around the idea of creating an historic workshop were among the factors considered for lighting design. . 217 . Bilim Tarihinin Hikâyesi Çekilirken... Animating the Story of the History of Science... BİR ANLAMDA GEÇMİŞE BİR YOLCULUĞUN ANLATILDIĞI MÜZENİN GENEL VE ESER AYDINLATMASI PROJELENDİRİLİRKEN MEKÂNIN TARİHÎ DOKUSU, MÜZENİN ZİYARET KURGUSU . 218 . WHEN DESIGNING THE LIGHTING OF THE MUSEUM IN WHICH A JOURNEY TO THE PAST WAS OFFERED TO VISITORS, HISTORIC TEXTURE OF THE BUILDING, THE DESIGN CONCEPT OF VISITOR EXPERIENCE, AND THE VE ZİYARETÇİYE ESKİ DÖNEMİN IDEA FOR THE VISITOR TO HAVE THE HİSSİNİ VEREBİLME GİBİ FEELING OF VISITING A HISTORIC ETKENLER DİKKATE ALINMIŞTIR. WORKSHOP WERE CONSIDERED. In exhibit galleries, fixtures focused on objects were opted for rather than general lighting; the space was softly lit with the light bouncing off of both backgrounds/walls and the objects, which creates a dramatic effect. Based on the size and specs of the objects, single-focused fixtures or fixtures lighting a group of objects were selected. The warm ambiance of the museum was created using high color rendering LED fixtures with high values of correlated color temperature. Use of LED fixtures solved the problem of exposing the objects to UV or IR radiation and also enabled the space to be well-lit at a constant spectrum in the long run. LED fixtures also produce less heat in the space. Although light sources are mainly focused on objects, to highlight the interactive applications, some dark spots were also created. Moreover, custom-made fixtures imitating the objects' geometrical shape and trailing the objects with light also supported the space-lighting coordination. Animations were created to depict the inventors' lives and scientific adventures in the fields of astronomy, geography, cartography, chemistry, and medicine. Costumes were created in parallel with the historical facts, and settings were designed to resemble the original sceneries. The movies were shot in a green box setting with 4K digital cameras using the highest possible resolution. This way, we obtained high quality picture, enabling the margin needed for animation. Next, offline editing processes were carried out and artworks were produced. At this point, the general style of the animations carried patterns used in historical miniatures. All animations were created by a third-party experienced team. MÜZEDE YER ALAN ANİMASYON FİLMLER İÇİN DÖNEMİN TARİHSEL OLGULARIYLA ÖRTÜŞECEK ŞEKİLDE KOSTÜMLER VE DEKOR HAZIRLANARAK GERÇEKÇİLİK HİSSİ PEKİŞTİRİLMİŞTİR. FOR THE ANIMATIONS SHOWN IN THE MUSEUM, COSTUMES AND STAGESETTINGS WERE DESIGNED TO REFLECT THE HISTORIC FACTS OF THE TIME, WHICH ENFORCED THE VISITORS' FEELING OF VISITING A HISTORIC WORKSHOP. . 219 . İslam Bilim Tarihini Deneyimlemek Experiencing the History of Science in Islam İslam Bilim Tarihi Müzesi kapsamında geleneksel müze anlatımının ötesine geçmek, ziyaretçilerin İslam bilim tarihindeki gelişmeleri fiziksel olarak deneyimleme ve dolayısıyla daha yakından tanımalarına olanak sağlamak amacıyla alanında ilk defa kullanılan 4 ayrı etkileşimli ünite geliştirildi. Four different interactive units were developed and implemented in the museum to go beyond the traditional approach to visitor-museum interaction and let the visitors have a kinesthetic experience regarding the developments in the history of science in Islam. CAREFULLY DESIGNED INTERACTIVE APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS A SMELLING BOOTH, WHICH IS A FIRST IN TURKEY, SETS THIS MUSEUM APART FROM OTHERS... For instance, in the chemistry unit, using a multi-touch screen, the visitor can navigate through the story of scent making by Islamic scientists; and, through a special mechanism, the visitor can actually smell each of three popular scents of the time, namely, rose, oudh, and ambergris. It is not an easy task to understand the working principle of astrolabe, which is one of the leading innovations of the time. In another booth, to illustrate its use, a real astrolabe was equipped with special sensors, and now visitors are able to use it while watching the sky on a large screen. This way, visitors are actively involved in the use of artifact and comprehend the working mechanism behind it. In the geography unit, hard-to-read historical maps are matched with their modern counterparts and visitors have the chance to compare the two. This way, visitors have the chance to see how detailed the historic maps are. Without having the opportunity to compare the two versions of the map, it would not make much sense for the visitor to examine the historic maps. . 221 . . 222 . The current understanding of science prevailing all around the globe has been considering the whole nature as the energy resource for technology and industry and thus irreversibly destroy the nature and the habitats of all kinds. Islamic scholars' understanding of knowledge and life was a result of a very different contemplation. Their understanding of science and technology is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Islam, which would not let them exploit the nature and everything that is contained on the earth, but rather advise them to strive to protect and improve the environment. Based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), "Take refuge in Allah from useless knowledge (AtTirmidhi [praying]); considering the authority of religion on knowledge; and, being aware of their boundaries in pursuing scientific ideals, Islamic scholars approached the nature from a pragmatic/utilitarian position and lived on the Earth in harmony. Museum of History of Science in Islam, which came into existence following the restoration of the building, selection of material, curation, lighting design, selection of the objects to be displayed, and their production, closely follows this perspective and presents the idea that Muslims have lived in harmony with nature and creature and reflected this perspective on their scholarly works in science and technology. . 223 .
