SEYAHAT Travel A huge, dazzling seven-headed snake with its mouth wide open, revealing sharp teeth and a forked tongue, ready to strike. Sounds a little scary, doesn’t it? But you can breathe freely because not only is it impossible for this snake to attack you, it isn’t even able to move. The reason is simple: it’s just a statue… Just below the creature sits a carved Buddha meditating peacefully, stubbornly refusing to be frightened by the snake above him. Welcome to the deepest corridors of the mind of mystical shaman Bunleua Sulilat, to the sculpture parks ‘Sala Keoku’ and ‘Xieng Khuan’ where the power of imagination is manifested in the most colourful of forms. The riverside ‘Sala Keoku’ Borders have always fascinated people, and the Thai town of Nong Khai on the Laos border is one of those places that make the most of this situation. Stretching like a bridge of friendship between Laos and Thailand, Nong Khai has much more charm than you could ever imagine. The defining characteristic of Nong Khai is a park hidden in the middle of the paddy fields. Although many travellers come here just to receive a visa or to visit nearby Vientiane, this hidden pearl whose name you can hear by speaking to the locals of Nong Khai has in fact been here a long time. Work on ‘Sala Keoku’, also known as ‘Wat Kaek’, began in 1978, and the end result is a sculpture park like no other. The park lies right next to the Mekong River that traces the border with Laos. Wherever you look, your eyes meet one of the many reverent Buddha statues that range from one to 25 metres in size. And also of course statues of various Hindu deities, from Vishnu to Krishna… It doesn’t take much to work out the source of inspiration for the park: the Hindu and Buddhist cultures and mythologies that shaped the region. The park’s Laos branch: ‘Xieng Khuan’ In fact, the sculpture park in Thailand owes its existence to its twin that was founded 20 years earlier on the other bank of the Mekong River. Bunleua Sulilat, a monk of Lao origin, first began work on founding the Laos Buddha Park of ‘Xieng Khuan’ in 1958. But it was to be three years after he crossed the Mekong until he began work on the park’s ‘Thai version’. Smaller but greener than its counterpart in Thailand, ‘Xieng Khuan’ not only welcomes tourists but is also used as a public park by the residents of the nearby Vientiane. As well as the sculptures scattered throughout the park, the impressive three-storey building in the centre of ‘Sala Keoku’ displays hundreds of works in bronze and stone, created or inspired by Bunleua himself. The third floor of the building exhibits his mummified body, personal objects and photographs. The mystical rumour that the hair of his SEYAHAT Travel Budist keşiş adayları park ziyaretinde / Buddhist monk-to-be’s on a visit to the Park BUNLEUA SULILAT Bunleua Sulilat was born in 1932, and it is said that one day when walking in the mountains, he fell into a cave. There he met a monk who lived in the cave and spent many years together with him. During this time he fully adopted the philosophy of Buddhism and became a spiritual leader. When he emerged from the cave he began to search for ways to express his spiritual feelings and came up with the idea of creating a sculpture park. In 1975 he was forced to abandon the project he had started in Laos due to political developments in the country, continuing just a few kilometres away in Thailand on the opposite bank of the Mekong. It wasn’t until 1994 that the park, which is full of sculptures – some frightening, some grotesque – was ready to open. In 1996, when he was 64 years old, despite his advancing years and failing health, he continued to come to the park and give recommendations about new sculptures. Bunleua, who had spent his whole life following his dreams and who devoted himself to his sculpture parks, died after a fall from one of the sculptures in ‘Sala Keoku’. mummified body continues to grow is still in circulation. Wheel of Life The ‘Xieng Khuan’ on the Laos bank of the river is full of many-armed, many-headed statues that are artistic representations of Hindu and Buddhist deities. Some of the statues arouse surprise and curiosity, such as the smiling dancers with their hands joined in prayer, or the sculpture of embracing skeletons, in front of which the orange-robed monks that tour the park stop in contemplation. However, the most interesting work in the park is the statue entitled ‘Wheel of Life’, which looks at the fundamental Buddhist themes of rebirth and enlightenment. You enter the statue through the birth canal and proceed towards the death section. Until you leave the circular sculpture, death follows life, and life follows death. According to the law of Karma, the only way to leave this cycle is to reach Nirvana. In this sculptural representation of the cycle, however, all you have to do is step outside! A surreal experience Whether you visit ‘Xieng Khuan’ in Laos or ‘Sala Keoku’, the park’s Thai version on the other side of the river, you will .*@;JB?<;EKİM-OCTOBER 2014 find yourself right in the centre of Bunleua’s mystical dreams inspired by Hinduism and Buddhism. As you marvel at the dozens of sculptures that would give Salvador Dali a run for his money, you will wonder about every detail of every figure, looking at them from an increasingly profound perspective and will find yourself wondering about Bunleua’s reasons for bringing together so many abstract works. Then you will think of your own story and develop a different bond with the sculptures. Who knows, perhaps you will even share some of Bunleua’s mystical dreams.
