Değerli Dedeman Okurları,
Öncelikle sizlerle güzel haberlerimizi paylaşmak isteriz. Geçtiğimiz sayıda müjdesini verdiğimiz
Dedeman Park konseptimizin ilk oteli Dedeman Park Denizli açıldı. Dedeman Oteller ailesinin bu
en yeni üyesi, Dedeman kalitesinin bir devamı iken sunduğu yenilikçi hizmetler ile de bölgenin
vazgeçilmezi olmaya aday. Sene boyunca bizden yeni haberler duymaya hazır olun.
Yaz sayımızda yine sizler için keyifli bir dergi hazırlamış olmanın mutluluğu içerisindeyiz.
Bu sayımızda, bir duayeni sayfalarımıza konuk etmenin gururunu yaşıyoruz. Betûl Mardin ile
yaptığımız keyifli röportajı ilerleyen sayfalarda okuyabilirsiniz. Senenin önemli etkinliklerine

the upcoming pages. We also wanted to feature London, which will host important events of the
year, in our magazine. With the celebrations for the Queen’s 60th year on the throne, the Olympics
and Wimbledon, it looks as though London will set the agenda for the summer. Another one of our
summery features lets you in on everything you need to know about the sailing sport.
Parallel to the opening of Dedeman Park Denizli, we’ve featured a delightful chat with Dedeman

FESTİVALİ BAŞLIYOR!
Yıl içinde gerçekleştirdiği etkinlikleriyle İstanbulluları
sanata doyuran İstanbul Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı 3-19 Temmuz
tarihleri arasında dünyanın önemli caz müziği isimlerini
sanatseverlerle buluşturuyor. Dünyada ‘seçkin müzik’
olarak kabul gören cazın önemli ve efsanevi isimleri, festival
kapsamında özgün bestelerini yorumlayacakları konserlerinde
cazseverleri büyüleyecek. Aralarında, akustik basta Gary
Peacock, davulda Jack DeJohnette’in eşliğinde sahne alacak
olan klasiklere getirdiği eşsiz yorumlarıyla Keith Jarrett,
Mercury ödüllü Anthony and The Johnsons ve Filarmonia
İstanbul, “Neo-Soul”un kraliçesi Erykah Badu, caz, bossonova ve mamboyu başarıyla harmanlayan Caro Emerald,
Brown’ın mirasçısı Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Till
Brönner gibi dev isimlerin yer aldığı festivalin en öne çıkan
konuğu ise Morrissey. Festival kapsamında Türkiye’deki
dinleyicisiyle buluşacak olan İngiliz şarkıcı, yaz aylarının
gelişiyle Türkiye’de yaşanan yıldız geçidine Madonna, Kings
of Convenience gibi isimlerden sonra dahil oluyor. The
Smiths ve sonrasında bireysel olarak devam ettirdiği aktivist
duruşunun yanı sıra herkesi kendisine hayran bırakan sözleri
ve büyüleyici müziğiyle 19 Temmuz Perşembe akşamı Cemil
Topuzlu Açıkhava Sahnesi’nde yer alacak olan Morrissey “Let
Me Kiss You”, “First of The Gang”, “You Have Killed Me”
gibi hit şarkılarıyla hayranlarını bir kez daha cezbedecek.

sponsorluğunu Garanti Bankası üstleniyor.
THE 19TH ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL BEGINS!
The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, which gives Istanbulites their fill of art
through events it hosts throughout the year, introduces the world’s leading names in
jazz music to art fans from July 3-19. Important and legendary names of jazz, accepted
as “distinguished music” around the world, will mesmerize jazz lovers in their festival
concerts, where they’ll perform their original compositions. The festival hosts huge
names, among them Keith Jarrett, who brings unique interpretations to classics and who
will take the stage with Gary Peacock on the acoustic bass and Jack DeJohnette on the
drums, the Mercury Prize winner Anthony and The Johnsons and Filarmonia Istanbul, the
queen of “Neo Soul” Erykah Badu, Caro Emerald, who successfully blends jazz, bossa-nova
and mambo, Brown’s heir Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and Till Brönner, but the most
prominent guest is Morrissey. The British singer who’ll meet with his listeners in Turkey
as part of the festival joins the parade of stars to visit Turkey with the arrival of summer
months after names like Madonna and Kings of Convenience. In addition to the activist
stance he took with The Smiths and later individually, Morrissey takes place at Cemil
Topuzlu Open-Air Theater with his lyrics that make everyone admire him and his dazzling
music on the evening of Thursday July 19. He’ll charm his fans once again with his hit
songs like “Let Me Kiss You”, “First of The Gang” and “You Have Killed Me.” Sponsored
by Garanti Bank, the festival’s tickets were offered for sale at the end of April.

25 Ağustos Cumartesi akşamı Santralistanbul Kıyı Amfi’de hayranlarıyla buluşacak olan Kanadalı
şarkıcı, yumuşak sesi ve güçlü gitarıyla büyüleyici bir ahenk içinde olan yaratıcı şarkı sözleriyle
dinleyenleri kendisine hayran bırakacak. 4 Grammy ve 3 Juno sahibi olmanın yanında Kings of
Convenience gibi isimlerle yaptığı çalışmalarla uluslararası arenada kendinden bahsettiren Feist,
Türkiye’de uzun süredir beklenen isimlerden.

Not taking a break in events after the Jazz Festival, İKSV has news of another concert. The Foundation is getting
ready to host one of the most beloved names in indie folk music, Feist. The Canadian singer who’ll meet with her
fans at santralistanbul Kıyı Amfi on Saturday, August 25 will leave listeners in awe of her thanks to her soft voice
and creative lyrics that are in charming harmony with her strong guitar. In addition to receiving 4 Grammys and
3 Junos, Feist has made a name in the international arena through the work she’s done with musicians like Kings
of Convenience, and she’s one of the names that have been anticipated for a long time in Turkey.

get Istanbul into the groove with The Dap-Kings. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have relentlessly toured around
the world, performing at numerous festivals. Most recently, the band has been invited by fellow soul enthusiast,
Prince, to open for him at his shows. Now, with their incredible live show, they are getting ready to set the
Istanbul audience in motion on the 17th of July in Santralistanbul Kıyı Open Air Theatre.

Since the early 1960s, Burhan Doğançay examines
the social, cultural and political transformation of
modern and contemporary urban culture through
the use of walls. With the guise of an anthropologist,
Doğançay examines these surfaces that are open to
all manners of contemporary interventions ranging
from posters to slogans, and messages with sexual
content to newspaper clippings. Doğançay’s works
with different techniques and styles, are positioned in
both a historical and contemporary ground through
their incorporation of the icons of popular culture
and political symbols. Fifty Years of Urban Walls: A
Burhan Doğançay Retrospective stands as an anthology
for Doğançay’s last 50 years of work. With works
that range from small sized pieces to big canvases,
and installations that run beyond the walls, to various
materials and pursuits, this exhibition unrolls the
background to Doğançay’s ways of working. The
exhibition gathers together 14 distinct series and
periods of time with works coming from different
collections all over the world. The accompanying
catalogue presents images of works along with
explanatory texts, which provide different perspectives
to his ouevre while documents and photographs on
Doğançay’s life alludes to his urban traveller identity.

modern ve çağdaş kent kültürünün
toplumsal, kültürel ve politik
dönüşümünü araştırıyor. Afişlerden
sloganlara, cinsel içerikli mesajlardan
ciddi gazete kupürlerine kadar zamanın
her türlü müdahalesine açık bu yüzeyleri
bir antropolog gibi inceliyor. Farklı
üslup ve tekniklerle şekillenen resimleri,
popüler kültürün ikonları, politik
semboller ve işaretlerle hem tarihsel hem
de güncel bir zemine oturuyor.
Kent Duvarlarının Yarım Yüzyılı:
Burhan Doğançay Retrospektifi,
sanatçının son 50 yıllık çalışmalarının bir
dökümü niteliğini taşıyor. Doğançay’ın
14 ayrı dönemini ve dünyanın farklı
koleksiyonlarında yer alan çalışmalarını
izleyiciyle buluşturan sergi için hazırlanan
katalogdaki görsellere eşlik eden
metinler, sanatçının kariyerinin tüm
gelişim evrelerini açıklayarak birikimine
farklı bir perspektif getiriyor. Biyografik
belgeler ve fotoğraflar Doğançay’ın
kent gezgini kimliğini hatırlatıyor.
Küçük boyutlu çalışmalardan, büyük
boyutlu tuvallere ve duvar yüzeyinden
taşan enstalasyonlara, farklı malzeme ve
arayışların peşindeki yapıtlar, sanatçının
çalışma biçiminin arka planını gözler
önüne seriyor.

Sosyal paylaşım sitelerinde, rekor diyebileceğimiz sayıda paylaşılan Zaz Türkiye’ye
geliyor. Efes Pilsen’in katkılarıyla çıktığı Türkiye turnesinde İstanbul, Ankara ve
İzmir’de sahne alacak olan sanatçının konser biletleri, bir yıl öncesinde Türkiye’de
verdiği ilk konserinde yok satmıştı. Ülkemizde özellikle “Je Veux” parçasıyla ünlenen
Zaz, albümünden diğer parçalara da yer vererek hayranlarına müzik ziyafeti yaşatmayı

WIMBLEDON TENİS TURNUVASI
Tenisin en eski ve en prestijli turnuvası olan Wimbledon her yıl olduğu gibi bu sene de Haziran
ayının son iki haftasında gerçekleşecek. Öncesinde tenisçiler için Wimbledon’a bir hazırlık
niteliği taşıyan Quenn’s Club Şampiyonası ve Gerry Weber Açık Tenis Turnuvası yapılacak.
Her sene 32 tek erkek ve kadın oyuncuyla beraber toplamda 32 takımın katıldığı bu prestijli
turnuva ilk kez 1868 yılında düzenlenmişti. İngilizler için bir övünç kaynağı olan Wimbledon’ın
öncesinde köklü tarihini yakından tanımanıza fırsat tanıyan The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis
Museum ziyaretçilere açık olacak. Sporseverleri en iyilerin kıyasıya rekabetine tanık eden,
heyecan dolu maçlarla geçen turnuvayı geçen sene erkeklerde Novak Djokovic, kadınlarda ise
Petra Kvitova birincilikle tamamlamıştı.
WIMBLEDON TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Just as every other year, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, Wimbledon, once
again takes place in the last two weeks of June. Prior to it, the Queen’s Club Championships and
the Gerry Weber Open Tennis Tournament are held as tennis players’ preparation for Wimbledon.
This prestigious tournament where 32 men’s and women’s singles players come together for
a total of 32 teams was first held in 1868. Before the Wimbledon, a source of pride for the
British, begins, The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, which gives you the chance to get to
know the tournament’s well-rooted history, will be open to visitors. The tournament makes sports
fans witnesses to the ruthless competition of the best and hosts matches filled with excitement;
last year, Novak Djokovic in men and Petra Kvitova in women came in first place.

GOYA - TARİHİNİN TANIĞI
Modern resmin öncülerinden İspanyol ressam Goya dört büyük gravürü ve yağlı boya tablolarıyla
sanatseverlerle buluşuyor. Küratörlüğü Marisa Oropesa tarafından üstlenilen sergi, İtalya ve İspanya’nın
önde gelen müzelerinden tabloları ağırlarken, sanatçının alışılmadık imgelemiyle tanık olduğu karanlık
dönemi başarılı bir şekilde yansıttığı dört gravürü Kapriçyolar, Savaşın Felaketleri, Boğa Güreşi, Atasözleri
ya da Zırvalar’ı içermekte. Gerçekçi ve yer yer korkutucu çizgileriyle, 20. yüzyıl modernizminin bilinen
isimlerinden Goya, 20 Nisan-29 Temmuz tarihlerinde Pera Müzesi’nde ziyaretçilerini bekliyor olacak.
Yayımladığı ilk dizi olan Kapriçyolar’da din adamlarının ve dönemin sorunlarına sert eleştiriler getirirken,
1810 yılında Başkomutan Palafox tarafından görevlendirilerek gönderildiği Zaragoza’da tamamladığı Savaşın
Felaketleri’nde ise yakından tanık olduğu yıkımları resmetti. 70’li yaşlarında mali sıkıntı yaşadığı bir döneme
girdikten sonra engizisyonun da tekrar kurulması sebebiyle politikadan uzak durmayı tercih etti ve görece
Avrupa’da daha çok ilgi gören Boğa Güreşi’ni yarattı. Son gravür serisi Zırvalar ise diğer üçünden ayrılarak
çok daha farklı ve karanlık olarak tanımlanabilecek, çizgi ve renklerin oluşturduğu şeytani formları içeriyor.
Döneminin oldukça ilerisinde olan bu seri sürrealizmin bir habercisi olma niteliğini taşıyordu.
GOYA – WITNESS OF HIS TIME
One of the pioneers of modern painting, Spanish
painter Goya meets with art fans with four
large engravings and oil paintings. Curated by
Marisa Oropesa, the exhibition hosts canvases
from leading museums in Italy and Spain, and
it includes the four engravings Caprichos,
Disasters of War, Tauromaquia, Proverbs or
Follies, in which the artist successfully reflects
the dark era he witnessed through his unusual
images. One of the most recognized names of
20th century modernism thanks to his realistic
and sometimes scary lines, Goya will be waiting
for visitors at Pera Museum from April 20-July
29. In Caprichos, he harshly criticized men of
religion and the problems of the time, while
in Disasters of War, which he completed in
Zaragoza, where he was sent on duty by General
Palafox in 1810, he painted the destruction he
witnessed up close. In his 70s, after he entered
an age when he experienced financial difficulty,
he chose to stay away from politics due to the
reformation of the Inquisition, and he created the
Bull Fight, which was met with relatively more
interest in Europe. In contrast to the other three,
his last series of engravings, Follies, includes
devilish forms created by lines and colors, which
could be called much more different and dark.
This series that was way ahead of its time was
the news bearer of surrealism.

Kraliçe II. Elizabeth’in tahttaki 60. yılı onuruna
düzenlenen Elmas Yıldönümü ya da orijinal adıyla
Diamond Jubilee, 2,3,4 ve 5 Haziran tarihlerinde
uzatılmış bir hafta sonu programıyla kutlanıyor.
6 Şubat 1952’de tahta geçen ve 2 Haziran’da taç
giyme töreni gerçekleştirilen Kraliçe II. Elizabeth,
bugün tahta geçişi sırasında 12’si Britanya kolonisi
veya müstemlekesi olan 16 bağımsız ülkenin başında
bulunuyor. Birleşik Krallık tarihinde Kral III. George
ve Kraliçe Victoria’dan sonra Elmas Yıldönümü’nü
kutlayan üçüncü monark olarak da tarihe geçiyor.
Tahta geçişinin 25. yılında Gümüş Yıldönümü,
50. yılında ise Altın Yıldönümü’nü kutlayan Elizabeth
II, bu yaz her İngiliz imparatoruna nasip olmayan
bir törenle onurlandırılıyor. 4 günlük kutlamaların
tam programı güvenlik nedeniyle en az iki hafta
öncesinde duyuruluyor. Ancak birtakım büyük ve
kapsamlı organizasyonların duyuruları çoktan yapılmış
durumda. 2 Haziran’da Kraliçe’nin de katılacağı
Epsom Derby düzenleniyor. Epsom Derby, Kraliçe
II. Elizabeth’in, sıkı hayranı olduğu bir at yarışı
etkinliği. Kraliçe bu yarışlara 80 yıldır katılıyor. 3

the throne, the Diamond Jubilee is celebrated with a
weekend program that takes place over June 2, 3, 4
and 5. After taking the throne on February 6, 1952
and being coroneted on June 2, Queen Elizabeth II
is currently the head of 16 independent states, 12 of
which were British colonies or dominions at the time
she took the throne. She’s also noted in history as the
third monarch to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in
the history of the United Kingdom, after King George
III and Queen Victoria. After celebrating her Silver
Jubilee on her 25th anniversary of taking the throne
and her Golden Jubilee on her 50th year, Elizabeth
II is honored this summer with a celebration that
not every British emperor gets to experience. The full
schedule for the 4-day celebrations is announced at
least two weeks in advance due to security reasons.
Yet planning for some large, comprehensive events
is already under way. On June 2, the Epsom Derby
will be held, with the Queen in attendance. The
Epsom Derby is a horse race that Queen Elizabeth II
is quite fond of. The Queen’s been attending these

be held. In this event, everyone shares his or her lunch
with neighbours and friends. The Thames Diamond Jubilee
Pageant, a beauty contest in which boats compete, is held
on the same day. Nearly a thousand boats that come from
the United Kingdom and all over the world are decorated
especially for the day. The Queen participates in the event
with her royal yacht. One of the events planned is the
Buckingham Palace concert. Held by BBC, the concert takes
place on June 4. Many members of the Edinburgh Royal
Family, including the Queen, will attend the concert, for
which 10 thousand tickets were given out in a national
draw among civilians who submitted official applications.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons event, for which
2012 lanterns are lit all over the kingdom, also takes
place that day. The Buckingham Palace also announced
the route and details of the parade that takes place on the
last day of the celebrations. On June 5, the Queen will
embark on her journey from Westminster Hall, where she’ll
have lunch, then pass through Trafalgar Square to reach
the Buckingham Palace. Members of the Royal Family will

This is the year of the Summer Olympics, and the meeting
point is London. The 2012 Olympic Games will include
26 branches of sports and a total of 39 disciplines,
with the already-attractive London being made even
more beautiful for the event. The 2.5-kilometer square
industrial area to the east of the city is going through
an extensive transformation for the Olympic Games. After
being seriously contaminated due to industrial waste,
this area was first cleaned thoroughly a couple of years
ago as part of the preparations, then it was converted
into the Olympic Park. The park both sets a green and
inviting base for the games and offers a green area for
all the visitors to enjoy. The southern end of the park
will have the atmosphere of a festival throughout the
games. This area consisting of gardens, market areas,
events, cafes, bars and restaurants set along the river will
be the perfect entertainment spot. The northern end will
collect rainwater and possible water overflows with green
methods to keep them under control. It will also create
a quieter public space as well as providing a habitat for
rare domestic species such as the sea otter, gray heron,
water shrew and kingfisher. The Olympic Village was also
created especially for the Olympic games. 11 residence
areas made up of 2818 new apartments, plus spacious
gardens, courtyards and terraces created new living spaces
for Olympic athletes as well as shops, restaurants and
resting areas. In short, London seems already prepared
to greet both athletes and thousands of sports fans with
entertainment and events for the Olympic Games this
summer.

Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

The traditional Wimbledon Tennis Tournament once
again hosts competitive matches this summer to bring
together many tennis fans. The recipients of the tickets
for the championship will be determined based on a
national draw held after the applications. Those who
win the draw will then be able to get their tickets by
paying the cost. In other words, the competition among
potential viewers begins well before the matches take
place. First held in 1877, the Wimbledon is the world’s
only grand slam tournament held on a grass court, and
it’s got some interesting rules that date back to previous
years and traditions. For instance, the requirement that
all tennis players wear white... There are even certain
protocols that govern how people enter and exit the
court. The tournament starts on Monday, June 25, with
all courts except for some of them opening at 10.30
every day throughout the tournament. Even though the
program isn’t set yet, there’s an estimated program just
like every year. Men and women will compete in singles
between the 1st and 7th days. That same week, junior
categories hold separate matches for men and women.
The mixed couples’ matches are also on the program that
week. Between the 8th and 13th days, the fourth-round
matches are held between men’s and women’s singles
categories. On the last Saturday of the tournament,
finals are held for women’s singles, while finals are held
for men’s singles on Sunday. A large part of the courts
are closed over to avoid being affected by London’s rainy
weather; games are played and viewed with pleasure.

The London International Festival of Theatre, or LIFT
for short, is a festival that was established by Rose
Fenton and Lucy Neal in 1981. Now in its 31st year,
LIFT aims to take Londoners away from plays they’re
accustomed to and present them with different outlooks
on the theater from all over the world. Managed by
Angharad Wynne-Jones since 2003, the festival hosts
many provocative, angular, defiant, avant-garde and
unusual plays. For the first time in its history, the
festival travels to the West End for the Elevator Repair
Service group’s incredible play Gatz. The festival has
also collaborated with the World Shakespeare Festival
held by the Royal Shakespeare Company to gain

The Yucatán Peninsula to the east of the country is a tourist
heaven crowned by Cancún and surrounded by the Gulf of
Mexico to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The
largest touristic city in Yucatán, Cancún could be called the heir
to Acapulco, which was once one of the most popular cities in
Latin America, famous for its endless white beaches and bustling
night life. The uniquely beautiful beaches and turquoise-colored
sea of Cancún, on the shore of the Caribbean, welcomed the
great demand of luxury hotels and American tourists to dethrone
Acapulco.
Yet the most breathtaking spot of the Mayan Riviera, which
starts in Cancún and extends southward, is undoubtedly Tulum.
Every tourist that visits this ancient Mayan city situated on the
shore of the Caribbean is left bewildered. The temples, houses
and palaces of this ancient city the Mayans built on the shore
of the sparkling sea rise from the cliffs adjacent to the sea; these
slopes covered in palm trees and other tropical plants open up
in several places to facilitate access to the white sandy beaches.
As you’re swimming in the turquoise waters shadowed by the
Mayan temples built on top of the cliffs, you’ll think that the
Mayans who once lived in this city and woke up to this view
were perhaps the luckiest people in the history of the world.
The Mayan remains in Tulum may not be as rare and large as
ones in other cities, yet combined with one of the best beaches of
Mexico, perhaps even the world, the result becomes a dream-like
destination.

Located about two hours north of Tulum, Chichen Itza
is the most popular Mayan city in Yucatán. At the first
clearance the pathway leading from the middle of the
forest into the city reaches, the Temple of Kukulcan,
shaped like a stepped pyramid, greets visitors with all its
glory. The Temple of Kukulcan is set up in such a way
that each year on the days of the equinox (March 21 and
September 23), the rising and setting sun makes use of the
temple’s steps in making an image of a snake, considered
holy by the Mayans, appear on top of the stairs. At this
point, it’s not hard to understand why Chichen Itza was
chosen one of the new Seven Wonders of the World; yet in
this ancient city of 1,500 years, there are other wonders
besides the Temple of Kukulcan.
One of these is the field set aside for juego de pelota, a
game that resembles soccer. In this game resembling soccer,
it’s forbidden to use hands as well as feet; the purpose
is to get the ball through a stone hole that resembles a
vertical basketball pole, set on one of the walls. At the
end of the game, the players of the team losing according
to popular opinion, or winning according to another
point of view, are sacrificed to the Mayan gods. The
pelota field at Chichen Itza is the largest in Mexico. In

the Warriors, another important building in Chichen Itza is
the watchtower Spanish explorers called El Caracol (snail)
due to its shape. El Caracol is one of the largest concrete
signs of the Mayans’ astronomy culture, which still surprises
scientists and historians to this day.
The largest city on the peninsula is Mérida, located west
of Chichen Itza, closer to the shore Yucatán shares with the
Gulf of Mexico. With a capacity of 800 thousand people as
well as buildings with colonial architecture, narrow streets,
spacious squares and traditional café and restaurants,
Mérida is much closer to current Mexican culture than
the destinations we left behind. Even though the effects of
tourism are still felt, the residents of this relatively large city
are busy with their own work. Yet Mérida’s most defining
characteristic remains its location as a hopping stone to the
touristic spots in the south.
Located a little south of Mérida, Uxmal is definitely one of
the most important Mayan ruins in Yucatán. Even though it
is a little smaller than Chichen Itza, here tourists are freer
to get close to the monuments. You can climb up the pyramid
and look out at the entire city from above, or you can enter
the rooms (now bat nests) of the Place of the Governor, the
temples and the Mayan houses. The most striking structure
in Uxmal is the magnificient 39-meter-tall temple of Casa
del Adivino, which is shaped like an elliptical cone.
Towards Central Mexico
The first stop of most people who want to leave Yucatán
behind and move west towards the interior country is the
state of Chiapas, home of the Zapatista movement and
Subcomandante Marcos. The most important lodging spot in
Chiapas is Palenque, a not-so-cute area with a population
of 80 thousand that gets its name from the Mayan city
nearby. But ancient Palenque manages to impress you,
even though you started getting used to Mayan wonders
from Yucatán. Thanks to the minibuses passing by that yell
“ruinas, ruinas!” (which means “ruins” in Spanish), it isn’t
that difficult to reach the ancient city.
Because it is higher in altitude than Yucatán, Chiapas
receives more rainfall, and as a result, it has a more forested
structure. Palenque is such a Mayan city that’s situated in
the middle of an endless forest and spread out over a very
wide area. The emerald-colored forest in Palenque creates the
same effect as the turquoise-colored sea in Tulum; as you’re
moving forward in the tropical forest created by giant trees,
you can suddenly encounter Mayan houses that look like

tour the city alone; only the sounds of the river, waterfalls,

Itza. In addition to pyramids, palaces, temples and juego
de pelota fields, there are elements like well protected
daily homes, monuments and royal graves here; even so, it
now starts to get exhausting to climb the steps of Mayan
pyramids and temples.
Another touristic spot in Chiapas is Agua Azul, a river
that flows through the green forest by creating bubbly
white waterfalls. It’s possible to reencounter the bright
turquoise-colored waters of Tulum and the Mayan Riviera
here; in fact, Agua Azul, which means ‘blue water’ in
Spanish, gets it name from here. The essential element
of touristic stalls here is Subcomandante Marcos. Well
respected in Chiapas, Marcos has become a regional star.
The symbol of the revolt of locals without land, Marcos
has taken his place in touristic shops in the form of
t-shirts, key chains and dolls, just like Ché.
To get better acquainted with current Mexican culture,
you have to say goodbye to Chiapas and the Mayans. The
state of Oaxaca, situated between Chiapas and Ciudad
de Mexico, is a stop worth visiting on the long way to the
capital. Bearing the same name as the state, the city of
Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cities in the country,
thanks to its parks, museums, churches, houses painted in
vivid colors, colonial architecture and crowded markets.
Mexican cuisine also becomes diversified here. Oaxaca is
famous for its mole, a slightly sweet sauce with chocolate

that’s used in various meat and chicken dishes, as well as
its hot chocolate, a drink that the Aztecs discovered. But
here, hot chocolate is drunk a little differently than in the
rest of the world: hot chocolate is served with a very watery
texture inside a bowl, with a spoon and a loaf of bread.
Of course the fact that local tastes are more prevalent in
Oaxaca doesn’t mean you won’t find flavors available all
over Mexico, like guacamole, a very flavorful sauce made
with avocado, nacho, which resemble chips made with fried
corn flour, or taco, prepared with various stuffings placed
inside small, thin rounds of bread, here. If all of this isn’t
enough for you, you can try different flavors like cactus
juice and fried grasshoppers in the city’s market.
Oaxaca is also famous for its handcrafts. The artisans
market in the center of the city is living proof. Handmade
colorful skulls, tin frames, mariachi and figures of surreal
creatures perhaps imagined with the heritage left over from
the Mayans meet with tourists in this market, and thanks
to nongovernmental organizations that try to integrate
locals into the national economy, the money that tourists
spend goes directly to local groups.

But to get to know Mexican culture better, there is no
other place to go than the capital Ciudad de México
(Mexico City). With its narrow streets, spacious squares,
world-class restaurants and archeology museums,
mariachis, small restaurants, tequila bars, house of the
famous painter couple Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo
that’s been transformed into a museum, Aztec temples
and pyramids, Ciudad de México is a veritable summary
of all of Mexico. The first things that greet visitors to

the city are very dirty air and extremely crowded streets (and
transportation vehicles). With a population of 21 million,
Ciudad de México is one of the most crowded cities in the
world, and this naturally gets reflected in daily life.
Ciudad de México is located where the Aztecs’ capital
Tenochtitlán once stood. After conquering the Aztecs, Spanish
explorer Hernán Cortés wrecked the city and built Ciudad
de México, called the capital of “New Spain” by Spanish
settlers, in the same spot. But the local population never
forgot or let others forget this; to this day, the descendants
of the Aztecs play drums for almost 24 hours as a group and
dance in a sort of trance, accompanied by incense burning,
in the giant Zócalo Square at the center of both Tenochtitlán
and Ciudad de México, in order not to let anyone forget the
existence of their ancestors. One of the largest squares in
the world, Zócalo is bordered on one side with the famous
Catedral Metropolitana (the remnants of the huge temple
Templo Mayor, the center of the Aztec city, are right next
to this temple) and on another side with the old presidential
palace Palacio Nacional, which hosts Diego Rivera’s most
important wall paintings. A little west of Zócalo and the city’s
historic center is are Condesa, a center of daily life where well
protected monuments of colonial architecture mingle with
boutiques, restaurants, bars and night clubs, and Roma, where
the art galleries are. The mariachis, or traditional Mexican
music groups with several people that gather in the Garibaldi
Square in the evenings, transform the square into a festival
area, particularly on weekends, with their trumpets, violins
and guitars.
Ciudad de México also plays host to world-class museums.

Anthropology, one of the leading museums in the world where
the rarest works from pre-Colombus American civilizations
like the Mayans, Aztecs and Mexicans are displayed. A little
further away, the Museum of Modern Art hosts striking
examples of current art as well as several Frida Kahlo
paintings, yet the most important museum where Frida
Kahlo’s works are displayed is the house where Frida lived
with her husband Diego Rivera for 25 years, now converted
into a museum called Casa Azul (Blue House). In addition to
paintings by the artist, at Casa Azul, you can also see the bed
where she spent her last days and objects that belong to her
extraordinary life like the strap and cast she used throughout
her treatment.
Another one of Ciudad de México’s surprises is Teotihuacán,
one of the most important historic areas of settlement in
Middle America. This extremely well protected city where
Aztecs last lived hosts many monuments as well as the world’s
third largest pyramid, the Pyramid of the Sun. In order to
reach the top of the giant 70-meter pyramid, you have to
climb up 250 steps.
One of the most important things you have to watch out for
in terms of safety in Ciudad de México is the cab. Not only
tourists but also locals pay great attention in choosing taxis,
not getting into cabs without identification (this is why real
taxi drivers attach a large copy of their ID in a visible part
of their vehicle) because robbers who look like taxi drivers can
kidnap people and rob them.
One of the top ten countries in the world to host the most
tourists, Mexico deserves to be mentioned for its beauties.
The “New Spain,” which has everything you can think of,
challenges the old.

We spoke with Betûl Mardin, a brand name in public relations,
about her life, her career and her latest projects. We thank her
very much for this delightful conversation.
Instead of a cliché start, I want to ask this: how did Betûl Mardin become
Betûl Mardin?
On my father’s side, I am the member of a very well rooted family; a little Arabic, a little
Kurdish, a little French. On my mother’s side, I am from Kastamonu, Çankırı, that is, more
Anatolian. There was the need to do something amidst this large, complicated family, but
you’re a woman and the second daughter; naturally you can’t do anything, you want to work,
you want to go to school, they’re not allowed, but I was still persistent. Another problem was
that I wasn’t able to talk. Now, thinking back on it, I think it was psychological; apparently
I preferred not to talk. Everyone’s sad but no one lends himself to do something. I tried to
overcome it by myself. Back then, there was talk about a guy named Demosten. I heard he
was able to speak by putting pebbles in his mouth, so I tried it when I was 13. I was trying
not to swallow it; I couldn’t understand it at first, but in time, I understood that I needed to
comprehend where in the sentence it would form. Later, I started breathing accordingly, and
I overcame it. I became the head of the debate team at school; I learned the art of speaking.

arazimiz gitti. Ben de çalışmaya başladım.
Normalde köklü bir aile olduğu için arkanızda durup
destek olmaları beklenirken tam tersi bir durum olmuş.
Şimdi babam şöyle düşünüyordu; bir katta oturuyor
kira ödemiyor, yemeği bizimle yiyor yukarı kata çıkıp,
çocuklarına dışarıdan mürebbiye geliyor, onlarla
ilgilenmesine de gerek yok. Şimdi ne kalıyor bana? Gitme,
gelme, kocaya bakma. Kocaya bakmak çok önemli. Sonra
bütün bunların içinde yaşıma göre ne yapmak istediğimi
kafamda toparladım. Evvela kocalardan kurtuldum. Sonra
çocukların iyi yetişmesi gerek, öncelikle buna önem
verdim. Onlara göre yaşamaya başlıyorsun, onlara baktım.
Bu süreçte bir iki müşterim vardı, hiç unutmadım, çünkü
fark ettiler benim koşuşturmamı, yardım ettiler. Böylece
gazeteci oldum, TRT’de falan çalıştım. O tahsilim bitti,
‘68’den beri halkla ilişkilerdeyim.

olsun istedim. Bir ara, bir on yıl kadar erkek bir ortağım
oldu. Elimden geldiğince bir şeyler yaptım ama şunu
belirtmek istiyorum ki müthiş bir meslek. Satıcıların malını
daha çok satması değil; bu bir itibar mimarlığı. Öncelikle
I’ve known that speaking is a very effective weapon since I
was 15-16, and I use it. During this time I finished prep
school and went to my father, asking him if I could study in
the United States and become a psychologist. He laughed and
said, “After 18, girls don’t go to school. It’s a blessing that
you went to school until high school as is.” Moreover, my
sister had passed away, so I had become more valuable as the
only daughter. You can’t do that, you can’t do this. That’s
when I learned the soft landing spots; when they objected
to something, I learned to predict what they might say “yes”
to and work towards it, and this helped me a lot. My late
grandfather had a saying, “kıntırak.” For instance, the door
is closed; whatever you do, open a little kıntırak on the edge
of the door, stick the tip of your shoe in that gap and wait.
That’s really important, so you think about it; he said “no,”
but what could he say “yes” to? So I said he couldn’t say “no”
to food. For four years, I went to the Art School for Girls in
the evenings. I learned to cook, to sew, to embroider, all the
things that women in the role of the classic woman do. Of
course he was content, and this benefited me greatly in the
hotel business. In this time, we experienced a great loss, and
our field was gone. So I started to work.
When it would normally be expected that a well rooted
family would be behind you and support you, the
situation was exactly the opposite.
Now my father thought this way; she’s living on a floor not
paying rent, eating dinner with us then going upstairs, with a
governess coming from outside for her kids, so she doesn’t have
to take care of them either. Now what’s left for me to do? To
go, come and look after the husband. It’s very important to
look after the husband. Then, amidst all this, I made up in
my mind what I wanted to do that suited my age. I first got
rid of the husbands. Then, the kids had to be brought up well,
so I gave that priority. You start to live according to them,
so I looked after them. In this time, I had two clients, I never
forgot, because they noticed how much I was hustling, and
they helped. That’s how I became a journalist, and I worked
in TRT and such. That training is over, and I’ve been in
public relations since ’68.
At this point you actually also created “Public
Relations,” the things you did overlap very much. You
first created yourself, and then you create what you work

Dernek başkanlığında dışarı açılma diye bir şey yoktu.
Dışarıya açılmalarını istedim, Sam Black diye müthiş bir
adam bulduk şansımıza. O adam sayesinde Türkiye adına
dünyadaki Halkla İlişkiler bilimine yakınlaştım. O adamın
bana her zaman söylediği bir şey vardı: “Toplantılarda
bir soru sor, öyle bir soru sor ki herkes bir dönüp sana
baksın, sonra ikinciyi de öyle sor. Ama üçüncüyü sorma
sakın, o zaman ‘Yine bu kadın soruyor’ derler.” Beni bu
şekilde eğitti, ben de ona göre konuşmaya başladım. HongKong’da bir toplantıda bir adama bir soru sordum, ortalık
karıştı, ikinci soruyu da sordum, üçüncüyü sormadım.
Ertesi sene Güney Afrika’daydı, bana “mother” ismini
taktıklarını anladım. İçeri girdiğimde tempoyla bu şekilde
bağırıyorlardı. Bunun üzerine Halkla İlişkiler’in ‘Annesi’
gibi oldum. Bütün bunlar arasında başkanlık seçimlerinde
Türk delege Yunan delegeye verdi oyunu, bana değil. Rezil
oldum, hâlâ utanırım. Belçika’da oturan İngiliz söyledi
bana; Türk Yunanlı’ya verdi oyunu, onun için kaybettin
seçimi, ama seneye biz seni seçeceğiz dedi. Ertesi sene 36
ülkenin delegesi, aynı anda benim ismimi verdiği için direkt
seçildim. Ben Türklerin bu tavrını anlayamıyorum; kime oy
verirsek verelim ama kadın olmasın.
in. If you want, we should first talk about the process of
Public Relations.
First of all, when I discovered Public Relations, the profession
was stagnant. When I started this profession, before all else,
I wanted women to be present in this field, and I made this
a priority. Because there were very few jobs that women
could do, like be a secretary. I thought about whom I should
work with, and I wanted them to be women. For a while,
for about ten years, I had a male partner. I did whatever
I could, but I want to express that it is an incredible job.
It isn’t about sellers selling more of their goods; this is
reputation architecture. First you have to defeat carelessness,
ignorance, prejudice and hostility. Then when you get out on
the market, you have to bring that brand somewhere. I went
to London for a while, I could do this job here but I wanted
to test how I was abroad. I worked there for about 5 years;
I saw that I could really do this job. I came back here and
started to chair the association. There was no such thing as
going abroad for the association head. I wanted them to go
abroad, and to our luck, we found an amazing man named
Sam Black. Thanks to that man, I got closer to the science
of Public Relations in the world on behalf of Turkey. There
were two things that man always said to me: “Ask a question
in meetings, ask such a question that everyone turns around
to look at you, and then ask the second question. But don’t
dare ask the third, otherwise, they’ll say ‘This woman is
asking a question again.’” He educated me like this, and I
started to speak accordingly. At a meeting in Hong Kong, I
asked a man a question and there was a mess, then I asked
the second question, but I didn’t ask the third. The following
year, in South Africa, I understood that they had nicknamed
me “mother.” When I walked in, they chanted this with a beat.
Following that, I became the “Mother” of Public Relations.
Amidst all of this, in the presidential elections, the Turkish
delegate voted for the Greek delegate, not for me. I was
humiliated; I’m still embarrassed. The Brit living in Belgium
told me; the Turk voted for the Greek, that’s why you lost the
election, but next year we’ll select you. The next year, I was
chosen directly because the delegates of 36 countries gave my
name at the same time. I don’t understand this attitude of the
Turks; let’s vote for whomever so long as it’s not a woman.
Let’s talk a little bit about how you view the development
and current state of public relations in Turkey.
In my career, hotel management played the biggest role.
This was the branch in the field of public relations where I
made myself a name the most and earned the most experience.
I worked at Sheraton for 16 years and Swissotel for 11. I
gave my signature saying I would be there between 10 each
morning and 1 each noon, but each day I stayed till 6.
That’s how the hotel business is, right when you think you’re
finished, something else comes up. I learned a lot of things
thanks to this. I’ll also tell you how I got into this business.
There was an operator who did my first heart surgery, a
South American. He was very famous, and his wife was very
beautiful. They came here and gave a talk on behalf of the

Sizin Halkl İlişkiler tecrübenizde otelcilik önemli bir yer
tutuyor. Biraz bu konudan bahseder misiniz?
Benim kariyerimde en büyük yeri otelcilik aldı. Halkla
ilişkiler dalında en çok isim yaptığım, deneyim kazandığım
alan bu oldu. 16 sene Sheraton, 11 sene Swiss Otel’de
çalıştım. Her sabah 10 ile öğlen 1 arasında orada olmak
üzere imza attım ama her gün 6’ya kadar orada kalıyordum.
Otel işi biraz böyle, tam bitirdim derken başka bir şey
çıkar. Bu sayede çok şey öğrendim. Bu işe nasıl girdiğimi
de anlatayım. İlk kalp ameliyatını yapan bir operatör vardı,
Güney Amerikalı. Çok meşhurdu, karısı da çok güzeldi.
Buraya geldiler, Kalp Vakfı adına konuşma yaptılar, merak
etmeyin, kalp ameliyatı da olabilirsiniz, gibisinden. Benden
yardım istediler, misafirleri ağırlamam için. Ben de bir şartla
kabul ederim dedim: onlar böyle eğlence geceleri yaparlar
gelince ama ben geceleri gelmem. Ben yapabileceğim her
şeyi yaptım, çok güzel geçti. Dediler bari son gece kokteyle
gelin. 6-8 arası, peki dedim son kokteyle geleyim. Bir adam
geldi yanıma orada. Cebinden kartını çıkardı ve dedi ki, “Sizi
büyük bir hayranlıkla izledim, buraya yarın bir gelirseniz
görüşmek isterim.” Baktım Satış Müdürü Ferit. Peki, ertesi
gün gittim yanına, konuştuk ve otelcilik serüveni böyle
başladı.
Peki Türkiye’nin şu andaki imajı hakkında ne
düşünüyorsunuz? Sizce hangi özelliklerin
üzerine gidilmesi lazım markalaşma açısından?
Şimdi birkaç aydır, biz bunun üzerine çalışıyoruz.
Türk kahvesi oldu ya Yunan kahvesi, oradan çıldırdım
artık.“Turkish Coffee”, “Turkish Kebab”, “Turkish Hamam”.
Elimden geleni yapacağım bu konuda.
Heart Association, saying things like “Don’t worry; you
can also have heart surgery done.” They asked for my help
in hosting the guests. And I said that I would accept under
one condition: They would host nights of entertainment
when they come, but I wouldn’t come at night. I did
everything I could do, and it went by great. They said, “At
least come to the cocktail reception on the last night.” It
was between 6 and 8, and I said, “Okay, I’ll come to the
last cocktail reception.” There, a man came up to me. He
took out his card from his pocket and said, “I’ve watched
you in awe, if you could come here tomorrow, I’d like to
meet.” I looked and it was the Sales Manager Ferit. Okay,
I went to see him the next day, we talked and that’s how
my hotel adventure began.
So what do you think about Turkey’s current image?
In terms of branding, what qualities should we
emphasize?
Now for a couple of months, we’ve been working on this.
When Turkish coffee became Greek coffee, that’s where
I lost it. “Turkish Coffee,” “Turkish Kebab,” “Turkish
Hamam.” I’ll do whatever I can on this subject.
Why do you think we don’t take ownership of these
values?
We think a little about the enjoyment part of it. Let’s eat
our kebab, eat our baklava, and not worry about the rest.
That’s how it is in regular life, that’s how it is on the
subject of women. We’re a little strange, we don’t see our
faults, we have to work. Every person who works in Public
Relations needs to take some ownership of Turkey. What’s
the motto this year? Promoting Turkey abroad.
Sizce biz neden sahiplenemiyoruz bu değerleri?
Biz biraz işin keyif kısmını düşünüyoruz. Kebabımız
yiyelim, baklavamızı yiyelim, gerisine karışmıyoruz.
Normal hayatta da böyle, kadın konusunda da böyle. Biraz
tuhafız, hatalarımızı görmüyoruz, çalışmamız lazım. Halkla
İlişkiler’de çalışan her insanın Türkiye’yi biraz sahiplenmesi
gerekiyor. Bu seneki motto ne? Türkiye’nin dışarıda
tanıtımı.
Peki halkla ilişkiler dışında, sizce bizler ne yapabiliriz?
Her şeyde, Türkiye’yi tanıtmak lazım. Mesela bir ilaç
Well, what do you think we can do besides public
relations?
We need to promote Turkey in everything. For instance,
you found a medicine, we have herbal plants, it needs
to be announced, introduced abroad right away. Since
yesterday, I’ve been thinking about the idea of neighbours.
There are so many neighbour stories in Turkey, we should
promote them. You know how houses are close to one
another in villages, large fields, that’s why I think the
relationship between neighbours is so tight. That’s where
buldun, bizim şifalı bitkilerimiz vardır, hemen dışarıda da
ilan edilmesi, orada da tanıtılması gerek. Ben dünden beri
komşuluğa taktım. Türkiye’de komşu hikayesi çok, onu
tanıtmak lazım. Köylerde, büyük arazilerde evler birbirine
yakındır ya, ben komşuluk ilişkilerinin bu kadar sıkı
olmasını buna bağlıyorum. Yani bu kültür oradan oluşuyor.
Çünkü yanında olan kişi önemlidir. Bu anlamda bizde insan
ilişkileri daha sıcaktır, daha fazladır.
Evliliğe karşı “One problem less” gibi sözleriniz var
sizin, sosyal medyada insanlar çok paylaşıyor, takip
ediyorlar. Bu konu hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz?
Çok güzel. Yüzünüze bir gülümseme geliyorsa bu yeterli.
Bu kadar. Ben itibarıma çok düşkünümdür. Bir insanın
itibarı bozuldu mu geri dönmüyor. İnsanın her adımında
düşünmesi lazım. Benim ailemin siyaset yasağı var, siyaset
yapamıyoruz. Bu çok kurtarıyor bizi. Üç tane iş var benim
yasağım olan: Siyaset, sigara, silah. Bu üç şeyi yapmam.
Bunları geçirdim çünkü ve karar verdim; yapmamam lazım.
Geçmişi nasıl değerlendiriyorsunuz? Hiç ‘keşke’leriniz
var mı?
Keşke dört defa kalçamı kırmasaydım ama yaşlılıkta başka
bir şey olabilirdi, kalp olabilirdi. Yaşlılıkta sağlıkla ilgili
problemlerim var. Üstüne çıkmaya çalışıyorum, gerçi
baston var.
Baston için “İmajının bir parçası haline geldi” gibi
yorumlar var.
Nasıl gelmesin, mecbur öyle olmak zorunda. Eskiden
Kervansaray diye bir gece kulübü vardı, herkes dans
ediyor. Bir müzisyen vardı, kadına bak bu yaşa gelmiş dans
ediyor dedi. 40 yaşlarındaydım o zaman. Anladım, bu
yaştan sonra dans etmemek gerek. Bir yaştan sonra saçımın
şekli değişmeyecek. Bunda sakat kalmamın da etkisi var.
Ameliyattan sonra, Londra’dayım o sıralar, Ayla Algan’la
Tunç Yalman beni ziyarete geldi. Topal kalmışım artık
biliyorum, Ayla dedi ki; uzun bir eşarp alırsın, paçana değil
de eşarba bakarlar. İngiliz kralının kardeşinin karısı da sakat
kalmış, o kadın da öyle yaparmış diye anlattı. Biz de dedik
ya, kendime bir imaj yaptım, saçı başı makyajı. Dolayısıyla
40 yaşından sonra bu imaj hasıl oldu. Ama pantolon olayı,
iki bacağımda da kanser olmasından dolayı oluşan yaralarla
ilgili. Onun için pantolon giyiyorum. Yara yok şu an ama
izi kaldı maalesef. Bir şeyim yok merak etmeyin.
Son olarak, hayatı yaşamakla ilgili bize ne
söyleyebilirsiniz?
Hep söylerim; ‘benim hakkımda konuşurlarken’ ne desinler
istiyorsun? Bunu öncelikle bir düşünmek gerek. Deli
mi desinler istiyorsun? Çok hoş sohbetli desinler... ona
göre konuşmalı insan. Bazı şeyler var ki çocuklarından ve
yaşından dolayı her istediğini yapamıyorsun. Ona göre de
düşünmek lazım. “Ben 50 yaşındayken...” ne desinler, bunu
düşünmek gerek.

you is important. In this sense, human relationships here
are warmer, more.
You have sayings like “One problem less” against
marriage, people share and follow these a lot in
social media. What do you think about this?
That’s great. If it puts a smile on your face, that’s
enough. That’s all. I’m very interested in my reputation.
Once your reputation is ruined, it doesn’t come back.
People should think through every step. My family is
banned from politics, we don’t get involved. That saves
us a lot. There are three things from which I’m banned:
Politics, cigarettes, guns. I don’t do these three things.
Because I’ve lived through these and come to the decision
that I shouldn’t do them.
What do you make of the past? Do you have any “if
only”s?
If only I didn’t break my hip four times, but something
else could have come with old age, like heart disease.
In my old age, I have health problems. I’m trying to
overcome them, though I do have a walking stick.
Some people comment that the walking stick has
become “a part of your image.”
How could it not, it has to be that way. Back in the
day, there used to be a night club called Kervansaray
where everyone danced. There was a musician who said,
“Look at this woman, she’s dancing at this age.” I was in
my 40s then. I understood that I shouldn’t be dancing
after that age. After a certain age, the shape of my
hair shouldn’t change. Being disabled also plays a role
in this. After the surgery, I was in London back then,
Ayla Alkan and Tunç Yalman came to visit me. I knew
that I would be crippled from then on out. Ayla said,
“You’ll buy a long scarf, and they’ll look at the scarf,
not at the cuff of your pants.” She told me that the wife
of the British king’s brother was also left disabled, and
that’s what she did. So we said okay, and I created a
new image for myself, with hair and makeup. So I took
on this image after 40. But the story of the pants has to
do with the bruises that were formed in both my legs due
to cancer. That’s why I wear pants. There is currently
no bruise, but there is unfortunately a scar left. Don’t
worry, I’m fine.
Lastly, what could you tell us about living life?
I always say, what would you want people to say when
they’re talking about me? First you have to think about
this. Do you want them to say you’re crazy? You want
them to say you’re great to chat with... People should
speak accordingly. There are those things that you can’t
do because of your kids and your age. You also have to
think about that. You have to think about what people
will say “When I’m 50...”

ödülünü hakediyor. Çünkü horozuyla ünlü şehrin
merkezinde bütün heybetiyle duran rengarenk horoz ana
caddeyi süslüyor. Bu noktadan başlayarak tüm cadde sağlı
sollu alışveriş mekanlarıyla dolu. Elbette tekstil mağazaları
ön planda. Malum Denizli bir tekstilkent. El dokuması yatak
örtüleri, havlular, peştemaller, masa örtüleri öyle çeşitli
ki, buradan hatıra olarak ne götüreceğiniz ile ilgili derdi
ortadan tamamen kaldırıyor. Denizli deyince akla gelen
ikinci şey de leblebi. Bu nedenle özellikle merkezde bol bol
kuruyemişçi bulunuyor. Alışveriş sırasında biraz leblebi alıp
çantaya atmakta fayda var!

Bir Varmış Bir Yokmuş
Ege Bölgesi’nin bu nadide ili Ege ve Akdeniz arasında bir
geçit durumunda. Şehir M.Ö 261-245 yılları arasında Suriye
Kralı ikinci Antiokhos tarafından kurulmuş. Kurulduğu yer
şimdiki Eskihisar Köyü civarında idi; daha sonra bölgede
meydana gelen büyük depremin ardından kent Kaleiçi
Mevkine taşınmış. Bilinen en güvenilir araştırmaya göre
Denizli adının kökeni, bir boy adı olan Tengiz. Bu kelime
Türkçe’de “deniz” anlamına geliyor. Kronolojik listelere
baktığımızda Türkler’in Denizli’de ilk görüldükleri tarih
1070. Bundan sonra Bizanslılar’ın, Germiyanoğulları’nın,
İnançoğulları’nın ve sonra tekrar Bizans’ın hakimiyeti altına
girdiğini görüyoruz. Ancak nihai olarak 1429’da bölge
Osmanlı egemenliğine giriyor ve 1876’da ilk belediye
kuruluyor. Merkeze Yakın Olmak İsteyenler
Denizli’desiniz, çarşıyı pazarı gezdiniz, alışverişinizi
yaptınız, hava da pek güzel, o halde sıra yakınlardaki
mesire alanlarını gezmeye geldi! Kent merkezindeki
İncilipınar büyük çınar ağaçlarıyla tam dinlenmelik. Soğuk
su kaynaklarının, havuzların, çocuk parklarının, piknik
alanlarının ve spor aletlerinin bulunduğu bir gezi alanı.
Aslında İncilipınar’a gitmek için havanın güzel olmasını
beklemenize de gerek yok. Kar altındaki fotoğraflarını
görünce insan böyle bir doğa harikasını kaçırmaması
gerektiğini anlıyor çünkü. Merkeze 8 km. mesafedeki
Eskihisar Köyü’nde bulunan bir başka mesire yeri olan
Hisar Değirmenleri ise nostaljik kır kahveleri ile size %100
dinlenme ve huzur bulma garantisi veriyor. Buradaki kuyu
kebabı ile ünlü restoranlar da açlığınızı gideriyor. Beyağaç
ilçe merkezindeki baraj göleti de seyahatinize renk katacak
bir başka alternatif olabilir. 850 metre yükseklikteki
gölette olta balıkçılığı yapabilir, düzenlenen su sporları
etkinliklerine katılabilirsiniz.
Bölge çevresi kızılçam ormanları ile kaplı olduğundan
burada alacağınız tertemiz hava ile akşama rahat bir uyku
çekeceğiniz şüphesiz!
ust about every city center has a statue that
describes the town. On this front, Denizli
deserves a reward for likeability. The colorful,
majestic rooster that sits in the middle of the center
of the city famous for its roosters decorates the main
avenue. Starting from this point, the whole avenue is
full of shopping venues left and right. Of course, textile
stores are on the forefront. After all, Denizli is a textile
city. The hand woven bedspreads, towels, peshtemals
and table clothes are so varied that you don’t have
to worry about what to buy as a souvenir. The second
thing that comes to mind when someone says Denizli is
the chickpea. This is why there are lots of dried fruit
and nut sellers, particularly in the center. It’s a good
idea to buy some chickpeas as you’re shopping and
throw them in your bag!

Once Upon a Time
This rare province of the Aegean Region serves as a
passage between the Aegean and the Mediterranean.
Syrian King Antiochus II built the city between 261
B.C. and 245 B.C. It was originally built around
where Eskihisar Village is today; later, following the
great earthquake that happened in the region, the city
was moved to the Kaleiçi site. According to the most
trusted research done, the origin of the name Denizli
dates back to Tengiz, a boy’s name. This word means
“sea” in Turkish. When we look at chronological lists,
the first date that Turks were seen in Denizli is 1070.
Afterwards, we see that the city enters Byzantine,
Germiyanoğulları, İnançoğulları and later again
Byzantine rule. Yet at last the region enters Ottoman
rule in 1429, and the first municipality is set up in
1876.
Those Who Want to Be Close
to the Center
You’re in Denizli, you’ve toured the market, you’ve
done your shopping, and the weather’s pretty nice.
Now it’s time to tour the parks near by! Located at
the city center, İncilipınar’s large plane trees make
it perfect for resting. This is a strolling place full of
cold-water springs, pools, kiddy parks, picnic areas
and athletic equipment. Actually, to visit İncilipınar,
you don’t have to wait till the weather’s nice. When
you see photographs of it covered with snow, you
understand that you shouldn’t miss a miracle of nature
like this. Another park located in the Eskihisar Village
8 km from the center is Hisar Değirmenleri, which has
nostalgic countryside coffee houses that give a 100%
guarantee of relaxation and peace. The restaurants here
famous for kuyu kebab relieve your hunger. Another

Denizlililer artık Pamukkale’nin eski güzelliğini koruyamadığını söylese de bu

Endless White
It wouldn’t be right to go all the way to Denizli and come back without visiting Pamukkale.
Even though Denizli locals say that Pamukkale wasn’t able to retain its old beauty,
this miracle of nature is worth seeing and discovering. Situated in the Menderes River
Valley, Pamukkale, in its crudest form, consists of the town’s thermal springs, terraces and
travertines made out of carbon minerals left over from the flowing water. This natural
area includes 17 different water sources with a heat that goes up to 100 degrees. Of course
Pamukkale is a very important touristic center. A great number of nature buffs, both local
and foreign, visit Pamukkale. That’s why there are a lot of hotels, restaurants and shops
that sell touristic souvenirs. Let’s draw you a little travel diagram so you don’t miss a single
detail in Pamukkale, historically called Hierapolis: When you move on from the Karahayıt
region, you’ll see Pamukkale’s northern entrance 3-4 km away. After you buy your tickets
here, the adventure begins! Once you cross the narrow asphalt road full of ancient artifacts,
we recommend you keep going by walking left. There are a lot of historical structures,
columns, old doors, fountains and graves around waiting to be discovered. After taking
lots of photos, you’ll reach a large arena when you keep going on the same path. There,
the white travertines are right in front of you! After taking in this incredible view, we also
recommend you to visit the museum right next to it.

Bu sayımızda gelişmiş sanayisi ve doğal güzellikleri ile dikkat çeken Zonguldak’ın
en yeni otellerinden Dedeman Zonguldak’ın Genel Müdürü İbrahim Çelik ile sohbet ettik.
In this issue, we spoke with General Manager of Dedeman Zonguldak İbrahim Çelik, one of the
newest hotels in the city that gets attention for its developed industry and natural beauties.

özellikleriyle ön plana çıkacağını düşünüyorsunuz?
Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi’nin tek beş yıldızlı oteli olması
Dedeman Zonguldak’ın en önemli özelliklerinden biri.
Ayrıca, otelimiz oda çeşitliği açısından da öne çıkıyor.

the Dedeman hotels family. In your opinion, which
of Dedeman Zonguldak’s qualities will come into
prominence?
The fact that Dedeman Zonguldak is the first five-star hotel
in the Western Black Sea region is one of the hotel’s most
important qualities. Our hotel also comes into prominence
with its various rooms. Our hotel has a total of 204 rooms, 26
Executive Suites, one King Room and 11 Apart Suites for guests
who’ll be staying long term. Other than that, the Life Style Spa
Center spread over 2500 m2 with a sea view adds extra value
to our hotel. 2 Turkish Hamams, 3 saunas, 3 steam rooms,
shock showers, 2 scrub rooms, 4 specially designed massage
rooms, special resting areas, an aerobics room with a sea view,
an indoor swimming pool, a kids’ swimming pool and a Vitamin
Bar are also here to serve our hotel’s guests.
I should also state that Dedeman Zonguldak offers plenty of
meeting options. We are able to host many events in various
sizes in the Black Diamond Ball Room, Gelik Room, the Kilim

3,5, Ankara’dan 2,5 saatlik bir yolculuktan sonra
Zonguldak’a ulaşabiliyorsunuz. Türkiye ormanlarının
çoğunluğu da yine Zonguldak, Bolu ve Kastamonu’da
yer almakta. Akçakoca, Abant, Yedigöller, Karadeniz
Ereğli, Safranbolu, Amasra, Kurucaşile, Cide hali
hazırda iç turizmden önemli pay alıyor. Dedeman
Zonguldak’ın da bölge turizminin gelişmesine önemli
katkı sağlayacağını düşünüyoruz. Yaz aylarında bölge
önemli bir turistik destinasyon haline geldi ve bunun
artarak devam edeceği görüşündeyim. Zonguldak, yazın turistik rotalara olan yakınlığı

Şehrimize gelen şirket temsilcileri, iş insanları
otelimizi hizmet vermeye başladığımız ilk günden itibaren sahiplendiler. Özellikle hafta içleri yoğun
bir taleple karşılaşıyoruz. Burada kurulu şirketler,
Which season do you think will be the busiest at
Dedeman Zonguldak? Why?
I think that summer months will be busier. We are
experiencing it this year, and we will know the market
better next year. Zonguldak offers a special location. It
is 300 km away from Istanbul and 270 km away from
Ankara. By car, you can travel from Istanbul to Zonguldak
in 3.5 hours and from Ankara in 2.5 hours. Most of the
forests in Turkey are also located in Zonguldak, Bolu
and Kastamonu. Akçakoca, Abant, Yedigöller, Karadeniz
Ereğli, Safranbolu, Amasra, Kurucaşile and Cide already
play an important role in domestic tourism. We believe
that Dedeman Zonguldak will also significantly benefit the
development of tourism in the region. The region has become
an important touristic destination in summer months, and I
am of the opinion that this will continue to grow.
Other than its proximity to touristic routes in the
summer, Zonguldak also has a strong infrastructure.
What kinds of benefits do you think this quality of the
city will add to your hotel?
Company representatives who come to our city have taken
ownership of our hotel since the first day we started offering
our services. We are met with great demand specifically
during weekdays. Companies established here and national
firms located in the region have held their events like
bölgede bulunan ulusal firmalar toplantı, seminer, eğitim
gibi faaliyetlerini bu zamana kadar faklı destinasyonlarda
yapmışlar. Otelimizin açılması ile özellikle kömür,
demir çelik sektörlerindeki firmalar ve bölgede faaliyet
gösteren kuruluşların toplantıları, seminerleri otelimiz
için önemli bir potansiyel oluşturuyor.
Otel misafir profiliniz ağırlıklı olarak kimlerden
oluşacağını düşünüyorsunuz?
Otel misafir portföyümüzün %30’unu Zonguldak’a
iş amaçlı gelen şirket temsilcileri ve iş insanları
oluşturuyor. %20 kadar bir oranını da Batı Karadeniz’e
tur düzenleyen acentalar vasıtası ile gelen misafirlerimiz
oluşturuyor. Bunun yanında Zonguldak’a gelen sporcu
kafileleri, hafta sonu grupları ve bireysel ziyaretçiler
önemli bir oran tutacak. Özellikle Ankara’dan gelecek
hafta sonu misafir trafiğinin yoğun olmasını bekliyor ve
hedefliyoruz. Ankara’nın denize en yakın noktasında
yer almamız, konumumuz ve Batı Karadeniz’in doğal
güzellikleri, otelimizin imkanları bizi bu konuda fazlasıyla
umutlandırıyor.
Bizim asıl hedefimiz ise Zonguldak’ı toplantı, eğitim,
kongre turizmi için ön plana çıkarmak. Bu nedenle
üniversite ve bölgedeki önemli kuruluşlarla yakın temasa
geçtik. Görüştüğümüz firmalar ve seyahat acentaları
Zonguldak’ta geniş imkanlarla açılan otelimizle çok
yakından ilgilendiler. Daha ilk aylarımızdan itibaren
başarılı organizasyonlara ev sahipliği yapmaya başladık. Otelcilik sektöründe en çok değer verdiğiniz 3 şey
nedir? Bunları Dedeman Zonguldak’ta ne derecede
uygulayabiliyorsunuz?
Otelcilik sektörü insan faktörünün çok önemli olduğu
bir sektör. Bu nedenle birlikte çalıştığım takım
arkadaşlarıma, misafirlerime ve iş yaptığmız tüm
ortaklarımıza karşı dürüst olmak benim için çok önemli.
Kısa vadeli bazı dezavantajları olmakla birlikte uzun
vadede çok faydasını gördüm. Güven duyulan biri
olmanın çok önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum. Misafir
beklentilerini anlamak ve pazarı iyi analiz etmeyi çok
önemli buluyorum. Siz ne yaparsanız yapın misafirleriniz
sizin sunduklarınıza yabancıysa başarılı olmanız imkansız.
Hedef kitleniz ve pazarın beklentilerine göre ürün ortaya
çıkarmanız, otelinizi konumlandırmanız gerekiyor.
İşlerimi mutlaka takım arkadaşlarımla birlikte planlarım.
Planlamadan hiç bir işe başlamamaya çalışırım. Eğer
planlarım tutmaz ise ısrarcı olmam planlarımı revize
ederim. Mutlaka takım arkadaşlarımın fikirlerini alır
ve bilgilendirme yaparım. İşleriniz daha önceden
planlamanız sizin daha donanımlı olmanız için fırsat
yaratır. Hazırlıklı olmanız, daha önceden tedbirler
almanız sayesinde hem başarı şansınız artar hemde
maaliyetlerinizi kontrol edebilme imkanınız olur.

meetings, seminars and trainings in various destinations
to date. With the opening of our hotel, the meetings and
seminars of firms particularly in the coal and iron-steel
industries as well as institutions operating in the region
have been creating an important potential for our hotel.
Who do you think will make up the majority of the
visitor profile for your hotel?
Company representatives and business people who come
to Zonguldak for business make up 30% of our hotel’s
guest portfolio. About 20% consists of our guests who
come via agencies that plan tours to the Western Black
Sea area. Additionally, sports groups, weekend groups and
individual guests who come to Zonguldak will account for
a significant percentage. We expect and aim for a heavy
traffic of guests who come from Ankara for the weekend.
The fact that we are located at the point that’s closest to
the sea from Ankara, our location and the natural beauties
of the Western Black Sea region, as well as our hotel’s
facilities, give us a great deal of hope in this subject.
Our primary goal is to draw attention to Zonguldak
for meetings, trainings and conference tourism. That is
why we have established close contact with universities
and important institutions in the region. The firms and
travel agencies we met with have taken great interest
in our hotel, which opened in Zonguldak with great
opportunities. Since our first months, we have started to
host successful events.

Bize otelinizin mutfağı ile ilgili bilgi verebilir
misiniz? Yöresel lezzetler mutfağınızın ne kadarlık
bir kısmını oluşturacak?
Karadeniz deyince akla ilk gelen balık oluyor. İmkanlar
dahilinde taze balığı hep bulundurmaya çalışıyoruz.
Amasra salatası, kestane balı ile manda yoğurdu,
deniz mahsulleri mutlaka tadılmalı. Ustamız yöresel
yemekleri çalışıyor. Özellikle Karadeniz yemekleri
batısından doğusuna bizim için önemli. İlerleyen
zamanlarlarda bazı yöresel yemeklerin üzerinde
çalışarak değişik bir prezentasyon ile sunmak istiyoruz. Bunun yanında şehre yeni tatlar getirme ve sevdirme
uğraşındayız.
Konaklamalar dışında düğün, lansman gibi
aktiviteleriniz olacak mı?
Kesinlikle. Haziran ayı hafta sonlarımız hali hazırda
dolu. Her hafta sonu en az iki düğüne ev sahipliği
yapacağız. Düğünlerimizin faklı ve özel olmasını
istiyoruz. Bu nedenle bütün ekipmanlarımız özenle
seçildi. Farklı salonlarda farklı bütçelere uygun
düğünleri aynı anda ağırlayabilecek durumdayız. Şirket
yemekleri, tanıtımları, eğitimleri, özel gün düzenleme
konularına çok önem veriyoruz. Zonguldak’a yeni bir
hava getirdik diyebilirim ve bu sadece başlangıç.
What are the three things you value the most in the
hotel management industry? To what extent can you
apply these at Dedeman Zonguldak?
The hotel management industry is an industry in which
the human factor is very important. That is why it is
very important to me to be honest with the team members
I work with, my guests and all of our partners that we
do business with. Even though there are some short-term
disadvantages, I have seen many benefits in the long
run. I think it is very important to be someone who is
trusted. I find that it is very important to understand
guest expectations and analyze the market well.
No matter what you do, if your guests are foreign to
what you offer, it’s impossible for you to be successful.
You have to put out products and situate your hotel
according to your target audience and the market
expectations. I always plan my business with my team
members. I try not to start anything without planning. If
my plans fall through, I don’t insist; I revise my plans. I
always get my team members’ opinions and inform them.
Planning your business ahead of time enables you to be
better prepared. Being prepared and taking cautions
ahead of time both increase your chance of success and
let you manage your expenditures.

Zonguldak ile ilgili önereceğiniz ne gibi yerler var?
Bölgenin ciddi bir turizm potansiyeli var. Zonguldak’ın
%66’sı ormanlarla kaplı. Dağ tarafından 1 km içeri
girdiğinizde yemyeşil bir doğa sizi karşılıyor. Üstelik
içinde bulunduğumuz yaz günlerinde, burada yeşilin
her tonunu görebilirsiniz. Zonguldak doğalgaz ile
ısınma sistemine geçiyor. Bu da kışları daha temiz hava
soluyacağız anlamına geliyor. Böylece kömür karası ve
kömür isi problemi çözülmüş olacak. Maden ocaklarının
turizme kazandırılması ve Kozlu sahil projesinin bitirilmesi
ile Zonguldak turistik bir çekim merkezi haline gelecek.
Ayrıca Zonguldak mağaraları ile çok ünlü ve henüz
turizme kazandırılmamış bir çok mağarası mevcut.
Fener Mahallesi, koyları, falezleri, şelaleleri Zonguldak’ı
keşfetmek isteyenleri sabırsızlıkla bekliyor.
Could you give us information on your hotel’s kitchen? How
much of your kitchen will local flavors make up?
When someone says the Black Sea, the first thing that comes to mind
is fish. As much as possible, we try to always have fresh fish. The
Amasra salad, chestnut honey and water buffalo yogurt as well as sea
food must be tasted. Our chef is studying the local dishes. Particularly
foods of the Black Sea, from the west to the east, are important to us.
In the coming days, we want to work on some local dishes and offer
them with a different presentation. Additionally, we are working to
bring new flavors to the city and get them to like it.
In addition to stays, will you have activities like weddings
and launches?
Definitely. Our weekends for May and June are already full. Every
weekend, we will host at least two weddings. We want our weddings
to be different and special. That is why all of our equipment was
chosen carefully. We are able to weddings that fit different budgets
in different rooms at the same time. We place great importance on
company dinners, launches, trainings and planning special days.
I could say that we brought a new air to Zonguldak, and this is
only the beginning.
Do you have activities planned specifically for the spring
and summer months?
With the air getting warmer, our summer venues will be opened.
Our hotel’s terraces are very spacious. Our guests will be able to
enjoy morning breakfasts and dinners across from the sea, against
the unique Zonguldak view. Additionally, we are starting to
offer our services for guests who want to host weddings and events
outdoors. In the month of Ramadan, we will serve Zonguldak
locals for the first time with our special open-buffet iftar dinners.
Which of Dedeman Zonguldak’s qualities attract your
guests the most?
Genuine and smiling employees are very important to us. I believe
that the Life Style Spa Center will be widely preferred. Our hotel
has all the qualities of a vacation, business and meeting hotel.
Other than well known areas like Filyos and the
Harmankaya Waterfalls, what are some places you could
recommend in Zonguldak to guests staying in your hotel?
The region has serious tourism potential. 66% of Zonguldak is
covered in forests. When you go one km inland from the mountain,
you are greeted with a green nature. Plus, in these summer days we
are experiencing, you can see every tone of green here. Zonguldak
is transitioning into the system of heating by natural gas. That
means we will breathe cleaner air during the winter. So our
problems of coal black and coal soot will be solved. When the coal
mines are made a part of tourism and the Kozlu shore project is
finished, Zonguldak will become a touristic center of attraction.
Additionally, Zonguldak is very famous for its caves, and there are
many caves that haven’t been made a part of tourism yet. The Fener
neighborhood, coves, cliffs and waterfalls anxiously await those who
want to discover Zonguldak.

Kuşkusuz Boğaz’ın en doyumsuz manzalarından biri de
erguvan ağaçlarının mora boyadığı kıyıların arasında,
masmavi sular üzerinde arz-ı endam eden yelkenlilerin
birbiri ardına geçişi. Bizlerin hala gizemli gözlerle izlediği
bu masalsı geçiş töreninin geçmişi aslında çok eskilere
dayanıyor.
One of the Bosphorus views we can’t get enough of
are undoubtedly the back-to-back cruising of sails on
blue waters, between the shores that Judas trees color
purple. The history of this story-like parade we still watch
with mysterious eyes actually dates back very far.
Dünyada ve Türkiye’de Yelken Sporu
İnsanoğlunun suyun kaldırma kuvvetinden istifade ederek kullandığı teknelere rüzgarın
enerjisini de eklemesiyle oluşan ve özellikle açık denizlere kıyısı olan ülkelerin benimsediği
yelkenli tekneler, önceleri sadece ulaşım ve savaş amaçlarıyla kullanılıyordu.Yelkenin,
doğayla mücadelenin ağır bastığı bir spor dalı haline gelmesi ise İngiltere’de 1693 yılında
Seamark Cub adında bir kulübün kurulmasıyla başlar. Bu tarihten sonra yelken, spor
olarak dünyanın diğer ülkelerine de hızla yayıldı. 1896 yılında Olimpik Spor olan yelken,
Türkiye’de ise Cumhuriyet sonrası gelişmiştir. 1850 senelerinde Büyükada, Moda ve
Yeşilköy sahillerindeki kulüplere bağlı yat sahiplerinin aralarında yaptığı yarışlar ile
filizlenen yelken sporu, 1914-1923 seneleri arasında, savaşlar nedeni ile durmuş ancak
1923 senesinde Yelken, Kürek ve Yüzme dallarını kapsayan Su Sporları Federasyonu’nun
kurulması ile tekrar gündeme gelmiştir. 1957 senesinde Yelken branşı Su Sporları
Federasyonu’ndan ayrılarak 25 Mayıs 1957’de Türkiye Yelken Federasyonu resmen
kurulmuştur. Ancak Türkiye’nin 1907 senesinde kurulmuş olan Uluslararası Yat Yarış
Birliği’ne üyeliği çok daha önce, 1932 gerçekleşmiştir. Uluslararası Birlik ise, diğer spor
teşkilatları düzenlemelerine uyarak, 1996 senesinde adını Uluslararası Yelken Federasyonu (International Sailing Federation = ISAF) olarak değiştirmiştir.

The Sailing Sport in the World and in Turkey
Created by mankind’s addition of wind energy to the boats he uses by benefiting from the
buoyancy of water and especially embraced by countries that border open seas, sail boats were
first used only for transportation and war. The transformation of the sail into a sports branch
dominated by a battle with nature dates back to the establishment of a club named Seamark
Club in England in 1693. After this date, sailing as a sport quickly spread to other countries
around the world. The sail, which became an Olympic sport in 1896, developed in Turkey
after the founding of the Republic. Blossoming in the 1850s with the races that yacht owners
associated with clubs on Büyükada, Moda and Yeşilköy shores held amongst themselves, the
sailing sport stopped between the years of 1914 and 1923 due to the war; however, it was
brought back to the agenda in 1923 with the establishment of the Water Sports Federation,
which encompasses the Sailing, Paddling and Swimming branches. In 1957, the Sailing
branch was removed from the Water Sports Federation, and the Turkish Sailing Federation
was officially established on May 25, 1957. Yet Turkey’s membership in the International
Yacht Racing Union, established in 1907, came much earlier, in 1932. The International
Union, on the other hand, adhered to the regulations of other sports organizations to change
its name to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) in 1996.

Yelken sporu yapanlar, hissetikleri en baskın duygu olarak özgürlüğü öne çıkarıyorlar.
Bir tekneyi hiçbir elektronik etken olmadan bir yerden bir yere götürebilmenin verdiği
duygu ise tarifsiz. Özellikle sert havalarda doğa ile mücadele etmek, insiyatif kullanmak,
aklın, mantığın ve duyguların aynı anda devreye girmesi insanın kendine olan güvenini
perçinlerken, yarışlarda adrenalin had safhaya ulaşıyor. Bütün bunlar insanın günlük
yaşamında da ayağının yere daha sağlam basmasını sağlıyor. Ayrıca, denizde her an her şey
olabileceği için, çabuk karar alıp müdahale etmenin gerektiği durumlar sıklıkla yaşanıyor. Bu
gibi durumlarda bilgi birikimi ve pratik düşünce ön plana çıkıyor. Fakat her şeyden önemlisi
yelken işini ciddiye almak. Eğer ciddiye almazsanız, sonuçlarını çok acı tecrübe etmeniz
olasılıklar içerisinde.
Yelken Yarışları
Yelken, hem tek başına hem de takım halinde yapılabilen bir spordur.Teknenin boyutu,
üzerinde tekneyi yönetecek kişi sayısını da belirler. Tekneler, 13 yaş öncesi çocukların
yaptığı en küçük boy olan ‘optimist’ sınıfından başlayarak, onlarca metre uzunluğundaki
yelkenli teknelere kadar gider. Yelkene her yaşta başlamak mümkün. Günümüzde yelken
kulüpleri çocukları 6-7 yaşından itibaren Optimist eğitimine başlatıyorlar. Önemli olan
teoriğini öğrenip, ondan sonra tekne üzerinde olabildiğince pratik yapmak. Teorik eğitimde
öncelikle rüzgar ile teknenin nasıl gittiğini, ardından teknenin üzerindeki ekipmanın ne işe
Why Sailing?
Those who sail as sports say the most dominant feeling they have is freedom. The feeling
that people get from being able to take a boat from one place to another without any
electronic agents is impossible to describe. Combating nature, particularly in harsh weather,
using initiative, employing intelligence, logic and emotions all at once reinforces selftrust and extremely boosts adrenaline during races. All of these help people stand sturdier
on their own feet during daily life, as well. Additionally, since anything could happen
at any moment out at sea, people frequently experience situations in which they have to
make decisions and take action quickly. In situations like these, a wealth of knowledge and
practical thinking come into prominence. But what’s most important is taking the sailing
business seriously. If you don’t, it’s possible that you’ll experience the consequences very
bitterly.
Sailing Races
Sailing is a sport that can be done both alone and as part of a team. The size of the boat
determines the number of people who can steer it on top. Boats range in size from the
smallest, which is the ‘optimist’ class suitable for kids under the age of 13, to sail boats
that extend for tens of meters. You can start sailing at any age. Today, sailing clubs begin
offering Optimist training starting with kids ages 6-7. What’s important is to learn the
theory and then practice as much as possible on the boat. In theory training, people first

sekizinci 14 puan alır. Yarışı terk eden tekneler ise en son bitiren tekneden % 10 fazla
puan alır. Yani sıralamada en az puanı alan tekne, en üst sıradadır.
Yelken yarışları üç ayrı kategoride toplanmaktadır. Bunlar, Regatta Olimpik
yarışları, okyanus yarışları ve maç yarışlarıdır. Yarışma kuralları tüm yelkenli tekne
kategorilerinde aynı şekilde uygulanır. Yarışmalara erkekler ve kadınlar (özel yarışlar
dışında) katılabilirler. Yarışmaların olimpik seyri üçgen şeklindedir ve seyir denize
atılan şamandıralar ile belirlenir. Yarışmanın yönü rüzgârın estiği yöne göre belirlenir.
Yarışma mesafesi yarışılan yelkenli tekne kategorisine göre değişir.

Yelkende yarış sezonu Mart ayında başlar ve Kasım’a kadar devam eder. Bu sene,
İstanbul Boğazı dahil olmak üzere yaz ayları boyunca birçok bölgede yelken yarışlarına
denk gelebilirsiniz. 29 Haziran’da PKRA Dünya Kupası Özel Etabı Kuruçeşme’de,
30 Haziran’da XVII. Boğaziçi Kupası Yat Yarışı İstanbul Boğazı’nda, 13-16 Temmuz’da
XXXXI. Deniz Kuvvetleri Kupası Açıkdeniz Yat Yarışı İstanbul ve Çeşme’de, 23-26 Ağustos’ta Cumhurbaşkanlığı İstanbul Yelken Haftası Kaya Ropes Match Race
İstanbul’da gerçekleşecek.
learn how the wind steers the boat, then what the equipment on the boat is used for, as well
as sailing and marine terminology. But the actual learning episode happens with practice.
The more you practice, the better results you’ll get.
Sailing races are held on a specific route determined by buoys that racers have to make their
way around, going in a specific direction. The total length of the course varies between
10 and 20 miles. Scoring for sailing races is as follows: the person who comes in first place
receives 0 points, with the second receiving 3, the third 5, the fourth 8, the fifth 10, the
sixth 11, the seventh 13 and the eighth 14. Boats that quit the race receive 10% more
points than the boat that finishes last. So in ranking, the boat that gets the fewest points is
highest up.
Sailing races are divided into three categories. These are Regatta Olympic races, ocean races
and match races. The rules of the race are applied in the same way across all sailing boat
categories. With the exception of special competitions, men and women can both participate
in the races. The Olympic course of the races is triangular, and the course is set by buoys
thrown into the sea. The direction of the rate is determined according to the direction of
the wind. The distance of the competition varies according to the category of the boat with
which teams participate in the race.

This year, you can come across with many sailing competitions during summer across many
places including Bosphorus. PKRA World Cup Special Lap will be held on 29th of June in
Kuruçeşme, XVII. Boğaziçi Cup Sailing Race will be held on 30th of June in Bosphorus,
XXXXI. Naval Forces Cup Offshore Sailing Race will be held on 13-16 of July in İstanbul and
Çeşme and Presidential İstanbul Sailing Week Kaya Ropes Match Race will be held on 23-26 of
August in İstanbul.

alumunuz Madonna konserinin haberi,
bünyelerimizi kış uykusundan uyandırmaya
çalışırken ilaç gibi gelmişti. Baharın hatta
yazın gelmekte olduğu hissiyatı konser ve etkinlik
haberlerinin peşi sıra gelmesiyle doruğa ulaştı.
Neyse ki güneşli havalar da modumuza ayak
uydurdu da heyecanımız sadece hissiyatla sınırlı
kalmadı. Madonna konser biletleri 3 günde bitip
tükenince yeni havadisleri acilen bekler olduk.
Halden anlayan organizatörler bizi merakta
bırakmadı ve yeni haberleri birbiri ardına servis
etmeye başladılar medyaya. Bunlardan belki
de en çok heyecan uyandıranı Red Hot Chilli
Peppers oldu. 8 Eylül’de Santralistanbul’da
konser verecek grup için gözümüz uzun yılladır
yollardaydı. Her sene “tamam artık bu sene
gelecekler” efsanesi ortalığı kasıp kavuran yegane
gruplardan Radiohead ve RHCP ikilisinden
nihayet birisi bu topraklara ayak basacak.
Radiohead içinse ya beklemeye devam ya da

s you know, news of the Madonna concert was
like medicine as we were trying to wake our
bodies up from the winter sleep. The feeling
that spring, even summer, is approaching reached
its peak with the back-to-back news of concerts and
events. Thankfully the sunny weather has kept up
its pace with our mood so that our excitement wasn’t
limited to a feeling. When the Madonna tickets were
sold out in 3 days, we urgently started waiting for new
happenings. The understanding event planners didn’t
keep us waiting, and they started serving the media
with news one after the other. Perhaps the most exciting
among these was Red Hot Chili Peppers. We’ve been
waiting for long years for the group, who’ll perform at
Santralistanbul on September 8. One of two groups
whose myths of “finally coming this year” kept us
waiting each year, Radiohead and RHCP, is finally
stepping foot on these lands. As for Radiohead, we
can either keep waiting or take a journey to one of the
cities where they’re giving concerts. Even though the
first category tickets for RHCP are already sold out,
you still have a chance for the second category. For
those who don’t want to give up their comfort, there are

Sue. Festivale katılacak diğer isimlerin önümüzdeki
günlerde açıklanması bekleniyor. Bu senenin
yenilerinden olan Mono Festival’in denizi, güneşi
ve kumsalı birleştireceği etkinlikte yeni ve farklı
stilleriyle öne çıkan isimler sahne alacak. Gogol
Bordello, Metric, The Horrors, Oh Land ve the
Ringo Jets festivalin gözdelerinden. Şehir içinde
denizin ve müziğin keyfini çıkarabileceğiniz Mono
Festival senenin sürprizi olmaya aday. Yazın önemli
etkinliklerinden biri de İKSV’nin düzenlediği
Müzik Festivali ve Caz Festivali. Diğer sanatçılar
alınmasın ama burada özel bir parantez açıp Caz
Festivali kapsamında tekrar İstanbul’a gelen
Morrissey’den bahsetmek gerek. İngiliz şarkıcı,
etkileyici sesi, şiirsel şarkı sözleri, güçlü sahne
karizması ve aktivist kişiliği ile The Smiths’den
bu yana müzik sahnesindeki etkin konumunu
sürdürüyor. Türkiye’de ilk olarak 2006 yılında
Platinum, Golden and Diamond Ring tickets available.
If you want to go, it’s best if you hurry. Another one
of santralistanbul’s guests is the now-classic Efes Pilsen
One Love Festival. Last year, 30,000 people attended
the festival, which is being held this year on July
14 and 15. The names that have been announced so
far are Britpop legends Pulp; Kimbra, whom you’ll
remember from her duet with Gotye on “Somebody
That I Used to Know;” and Selah Sue, one of the new
representatives of soul and reggae music. The other
musicians participating in the festival are expected to
be announced in the upcoming days. One of the new
festivals this year is Mono Festival, an event that brings
together sea, sun and the beach as well as musicians
known for their new and different styles. Some of the
favorites of the festival are Gogol Bordello, Metric, The
Horrors, Oh Land and The Ringo Jets. Mono Festival
gives you the option to enjoy sea and music inside
the city, and it’s likely to be the surprise of the year.
Other important events of the summer are the Music
Festival and Jazz Festival held by İKSV. We hope the
other artists aren’t offended, but here we need to give a
special mention to Morrissey, who’s coming to Istanbul
once again as part of the Jazz Festival. The British
musician continues to be an influential force in music
since The Smiths, thanks to his impressive voice, poetic
lyrics, strong stage presence and activist personality.
Morrissey first took the stage in Turkey in 2006
as part of Efes Pilsen One Love, and he mesmerized
Efes Pilsen One Love’da sahneye çıkan Morrissey,
performansıyla herkesi büyülemişti. Şimdi İstanbul
Caz Festivali kapsamında Cemil Topuzlu Sahnesi’ne
çıkmaya hazırlanan sanatçının performansı yazın en çok
beklenilenlerinden biri.
Tabii yaz gündemi sadece müzik haberleriyle dolu
değil. Van Gogh ve Rembrandt sergileriyle başlayan
rüzgar Pera Müzesi’ndeki Goya sergisiyle hız
kesmeden devam ediyor. Avrupa resminin en özgün
sanatçılarından ve modern resmin öncülerinden biri
olarak bilinen Francisco de Goya’nın dört büyük
gravür serisi - “Kapriçyolar, Savaşın Felaketleri, Boğa
Güreşi, Atasözleri ya da Zırvalar” - ve yağlıboyaları
Türkiye’de ilk kez sanatseverlerle buluşuyor. Bir diğer
önemli etkinlik ise İstanbul Modern’de 23 Mayıs’ta
başlayan Burhan Doğançay retrospektifi. Türk resminin
uluslararası arenadaki en önemli temsilcilerinden olan
Doğançay’ın Mavi Senfoni adlı eseri 2009 yılında 2.7
milyon TL’ye satılmış ve bugüne kadarki en pahalı
resim ünvanını almıştı. Mart ayında Erol Akyavaş’a
ait En-el Hak tablosunun da aynı fiyata satılmasıyla
kendine bir ortak bulmuş oldu. İstanbul Modern’deki
sergi, sanatçının 14 ayrı dönemini ve dünyanın farklı
koleksiyonlarında yer alan çalışmalarını kapsıyor.
Bütün bunların dışında, henüz açıklanmayan bir sürü
etkinlik de yaz boyu bizleri bekliyor olacak. Siz en iyisi

most anticipated of the summer.
Of course the summer agenda isn’t just full of music
news. The wind that started with the Van Gogh and
Rembrandt exhibitions continues full speed with the Goya
exhibition at Pera Museum. Known as one of the most
authentic artists of European painting and a pioneer of
modern painting, Francisco de Goya’s four big engraving
series – “Caprichos, Disasters of War, Tauromaquia,
Proverbs or Follies” – and paintings are meeting with art
fans for the first time in Turkey. Another important event
is the Burhan Doğançay retrospective that started on
May 23 at Istanbul Modern. One of the most important
representatives of Turkish painting in the international
arena, Doğançay’s work “Blue Symphony” was sold for
2.7 million TL in 2009 and earned the title of the most
expensive painting to date. It found itself a mate when
the Erol Akyavaş painting “En-el Hak” was sold for the
same amount in March. The Istanbul Modern exhibition
consists of the artist’s 14 different eras and works that
appear in different collections around the world.
Other than all of these, a lot of events that haven’t yet
been announced will be awaiting us all summer. It’s
best if you take a look at these events when making your
summer plans so you don’t despair that you missed them
later. After all, city life doesn’t bear being left alone for
even a minute.

By meeting required conditions and implementing

also cut back and energy efficiency was increased

YAZI-WORDS: BEGÜM AHU AĞLAÇ
Arzu ağzına bir çilekli çiklet daha attı ve renkli plastik
saatini kontrol etti. Saat 19.45’ti. Eve gitmesine 15
dakika kalmıştı. Parkın tozlu zeminine ayağını isteksizce
bir iki kere sürtüp, küçük kafasında eve geç gitmesini
sağlayacak planını gözden geçirdi. Saatini 1 saat geriye
alacak ve babasına durumu anlatırken de en dayanılmaz,
üzgün surat ifadesini takınarak bütün suçu dandik plastik
saatine atacaktı. Plan kafasına yattığı için hızlıca parktaki
diğer çocukların yanına koştu. Artık gönlünce saklambaç
oyunundaki yerini alabilirdi.
“Önüm arkam, sağım solum…” diye uzaktan gelen
sesi duyduğunda o çoktan ilerideki evin karanlık
merdivenlerine uzanmış, çilekli sakızını patlatarak, en
bulunmayacak yere saklanmanın tadını çıkartıyordu.
Bir anda kalın bir erkek sesinin ona doğru yaklaştığını
duydu. “Arzuuuuuu…” Gelen babasıydı ve onu
bulmak için ebeden daha sabırsız olduğu yürüyüşünden
anlaşılıyordu. Biraz canı sıkılarak saklandığı yerden çıktı
ve babasına hiçbir şey yokmuş gibi neşeli bir şekilde
–biraz da şaşkıncasına- koştu. Babası kızgın bir bakış
fırlatarak, sağ elinin işaret parmağını saatinin camına iki
kere sertçe tıklattı. “Saatin kaç olduğunu biliyor musun
sen? Sofrada herkes seni bekliyor”. Arzu kendi saatini
uzatarak “Benim saatim daha erken ama” dedi yere
bakarak. Babası saatine mesafeli bir bakış attıktan sonra
“Bunu evde konuşacağız küçük hanım, şimdi doğru eve”
dedi. Arzu babasının bu küçük numarasını yemediğini
anlayarak, suratı asılmış vaziyette eve koştu. Yemekten
sonra iki kişilik büyük kurul onu bekliyordu. Babası
“Seninle anlaştığımızı sanıyordum. Eve saat 8’den sonra
gelemezsin. Bir hafta akşamları dışarı çıkılmayacak”
diye otoritesini konuşturdu. “Ama baba bu haksızlık,
arkadaşlarım 9’a kadar dışarıdalar, benim suçum
ne?” diyerek gözlerinden yalancı bir damla yaş akıttı.
“Konu kapandı, dediğimi duydun. Arkadaşların beni
ilgilendirmiyor. Senin iznin bu sene bu saate kadar”… Cezalı geçen bir hafta balkondan dışarıdaki arkadaşlarını
seyrederek ve çoğunlukla için için ağlayarak geçirmişti.
Şimdi bile bu anın acısını içinde hissedebiliyordu.
Arzu, artık çocukluğundaki gibi görünmeyen parkın
kaldırım taşına oturarak “hıh” diye güldü. Ne güzel
günleri geçmişti bu parkta. Her bir kum tanesinde
gelişiminin izleri vardı. 7 yaşından 18 yaşına kadar bu
parkta geçirmişti her yazını. Bakkaldan gazoz yürütmek,
saklambaç oynamak, ilk kız arkadaş kavgası, ilk flört,
ilk kol kırığı, göğüslerin büyümesi, bisiklet ve patenle
artistik hareketler yapmak hepsi burada olmuştu.
Eskiden bakkal olan evin camına baktı. Bakkal Mahsun
çocukluk anılarında izi kalmış adamlardan biriydi. O
zamanlar onların en çok kahrını da yine o çekmişti. Evin
Arzu threw another piece of strawberry gum in her mouth and
checked her colorful plastic watch. It was 19.45. There were
15 minutes until she had to go home. She unwillingly scuffed
her foot once or twice on the dusty ground of the park and in
her little head looked over the plan that would allow her to go
home late. She would set her watch back 1 hour and put on her
most irresistible, sad facial expression when talking to her dad,
blaming the entire fault on her crappy plastic watch. Since the
plan sat well with her, she quickly ran over to the other kids in
the park. She could now take her place in the game of hide and
seek, as she wanted.
When she heard the voice from afar saying “My front, my back,
my right, my left…” she had already stretched out on the dark
stairs of the house ahead, enjoying having hidden in the place
that’s hardest to find by popping her strawberry gum. Suddenly
she heard a deep man’s voice approach her. “Arzuuuuuu…” It
was her father who was coming, and it was evident from his walk
that he was more anxious to find her than the person who was
“it.” A little bothered, she got out of where she was hiding and –
also a little surprised – ran to her father joyously, as if nothing
was the matter. Her father gave her a mean look, strongly
tapping the glass of his watch twice with the index finger of his
right hand. “Do you know what time it is? Everyone’s expecting
you at the dinner table.” Arzu put her own watch forward, saying
“But my watch says it’s still early” while looking at the ground.
After casting a distanced look at her watch, her father said, “We’ll
talk about this at home young lady, now go straight home.” Arzu
understood that her father didn’t buy her little trick, and she
ran home with a sullen face. After dinner, the grand council of
two was expecting her. Her father spoke authoritatively, saying,
“I thought we had an agreement. You can’t come home after 8
o’clock. Now you can’t go outside at night for a week.” “But Dad,
this is unfair,” she said, “My friends are out till 9, what’s my
fault?” as she shed a fake tear. “It’s over, you heard what I said.
I don’t care about your friends. Your permission this year is until
this hour…” The week of punishment went by with her watching
her friends from the balcony and mostly crying internally. Even
now she could feel the pain of that moment within her.
Arzu sat on the sidewalk stone of the park that no longer looked
as it did in her childhood and laughed. She had such great days
in this park. Every grain of sand bore traces of her development.
She spent every summer between the ages of 7 and 18 in this park.
Stealing soda from the grocery, playing hide and seek, the first
girlfriends’ fight, the first flirtation, the first broken arm, growing
breasts, doing artistic moves on the bicycle and roller skates – it
all happened here. She looked at the window of the house that
used to be a grocery. Grocer Mahsun was one of the men who
left a mark on her childhood memories. Back in those days, he
was the one who had to put up with them the most. Mahsun
had converted the ground floor of the house into a grocery. One

hazırlanmış külahlar olurdu. Burası onlar için paranın
değer kazandığı ilk dükkândı. Günlük harçlık hiçbir
zaman bu bakkaldan dilediğin kadar dondurma yemeye,
çekirdek almaya veya gazoz içmeye yetmezdi. Onlar
da Mahsun amcaya yalvarırlardı beleş bir gazoz için.
Mahsun önce onları hızlı adımlarla kovalar sonra da
dayanamaz birer çiklet verirdi. Bisikletten ilk düşüp
çenesini yardığında da yine onu yerden kaldıran ve
eve kucağında taşıyan Bakkal Mahsun olmuştu. Site
bekçisinden Mahsun Amca’nın 5 yıl önce bu dünyadan
ayrıldığını öğrendiğinde boğazında bir düğüm oldu.
Sanki çocukluğu da onunla birlikte gitmiş gibi hissetti.
Aslında geçmişi düşünerek yaşayan biri değildi Arzu
ama ne ara bu siteye gelse bu zamana dönemez olurdu.
Sanki burası çocukluk ve gençlik anılarıyla o kadar
fazla dolmuştu ki yeni bir anıyı kaldıracak kapasitesi
kalmamıştı. 80’li yıllarda çocuk olmanın ne büyük

to resist, he would give them a piece of gum each. When she
fell from her bicycle and split her chin, it was again Grocer
Mahsun who lifted her off the ground and carried her home in
his arms. When she learned from the neighborhood guard that
Mahsun uncle had passed away 5 years ago, a knot formed in
her throat. She felt as if her childhood was gone with him.
In reality, Arzu wasn’t someone who lived thinking of the
past, but whenever she came to this neighborhood, she
wouldn’t be able to come back to the present. It’s as if this
place was so full of her childhood and youth memories
that its capacity couldn’t contain a new memory. She then
thought about what a privilege it was to be a child in the
80s. They were children of the street. They hadn’t grown
up fragile and antisocial like today’s kids. They always
had wounds on their twig-like legs. At times they would
eat plums on top of a tree, and at others, they would
slide backwards on the slide; the games they played at sea
starting at 10 in the morning would only be interrupted by
lunch, then they would continue until the sun went down.
Back then even the sun was young, unwounded and healthy.
Then her eye moved to the balcony on the top floor of the
building up the road from the park. Once upon a time, her

Arzu toured every part of the neighborhood, placing the small
flowers in her mind on top of her memories and childhood.
She realized how much she missed the child inside her, so she
secretly gave her a hug, promising that she wouldn’t be this
far away from it for this long again...
