BU YAZ SÜRPRİZLERLE DOLU OLACAK!
Palmarina Bodrum, bu eşsiz yarımadanın muhteşem bahar
sabahlarına “Günaydın” demeyi çok seviyor. Hatta bazen
“Kalimera”, bazense “Buongiorno”, zaman zaman “Bonjour”, aklına estikçe de ”Buenos Dias” diyerek selamlıyor
baharı her sabah. Palmarina artık dünyanın en prestijli yat
dolaşım alanı olan Akdeniz’in tamamında tanınan, kısa zamanda ulaştığı çizgisiyle imrenilip parmakla gösterilen ve
aynı oranda saygı duyulan farklı bir marina olduğunu kanıtladı. Yola çıkarken önümüze koyduğumuz bu hedefimize iki
yıl gibi kısa bir sürede ulaşmayı başarmış olmak bize haklı
bir gurur veriyor.
Sizinle görüşemediğimiz bu son üç ay içinde neler mi
yaptık?.. İsterseniz beraber, kısaca geçmişe bir bakalım.
Özellikle son üç aydır bu bölgedeki süperyat firma ve
kulüpleriyle yakın ilişkilerimiz ve ortak projelerimiz nedeniyle sık yaptığımız Monaco ziyaretlerimizin birinde 7-9 Şubat
arası yapılan Credit Suisse Primo Cup yarışına skipper’lığını
benim yaptığım Palmarina Bodrum ekibiyle katıldık. Pek de
uygun olmayan hava şartlarına ve talihsizliklere rağmen çok
çok zevkli geçen bu trofe sonrası ilk defa kullandığımız J70
sınıfı teknemizle sonuncu olmayı başaramadık ama 9’unculukla yetindik. Yüzlerimiz güldü, çok keyif aldık, buradaki merak içindeki dostlarla Palmarina’yı ve Türkiye’yi çok
konuştuk, çok anlattık. Mart ayındaysa davet üzerine Monte
Carlo’da UIM Powerboats Class 1 World Championship ödül
törenine konuk olarak katıldık.
En başta projemizin son aşaması olan üçüncü faz inşaatımıza 15 Aralık itibarıyla başladık. Bununla beraber
Palmarina AVM’ye halihazırda var olan 65 mağazamızın
yanına 33 yeni ünite katıldı. Bunların 28 adeti yine ülke ve
dünya çapında markaların oluşturduğu mağazalar olup ve
beş adediyse yine çok seçkin kafe ve lounge barlarla çok özel
lezzetleri sunan şık restoranlar oldu. Ayrıca bu projeyle beraber üzerine titrediğimiz, bizim için kimliğimizde çok önemli
yer tutan yeşil alanlarımızı çoğaltıp ağaç ve bitki çeşitlilik ve
yoğunluğumuzu arttırdık. Kimse kusura bakmasın, çocuklarımıza her zaman öncelik tanıyoruz, tanıyacağız. Bodrum

yarımadasının en güzel, şık ve eğlenceli aqua-oyun parkını
onlar için tasarladık. 650 m2 havuzu, Xbox’ın kapalı oyun
merkezi, mini hayvanat bahçesi, çeşitli oyun/aktivite alanları ve sırf bu proje için kendi yarattığımız Günaydın KIDS
çocuk restoranıyla Palmarina Bodrum ayrıcalığının onlar
içinde daim olmasını istiyoruz. Yatlarımız için bağlama alanlarında yaptığımız düzenlemeler, Megayat yanaşma alanındaki 6,5 metre asgari derinlik için tamamlanan tarama
çalışmaları, aynı bölgede 1000 kVA’ya kadar enerji altyapısı,
bu sene Türkiye de bir marinada ilk defa devreye alınacak
olan ve marinamızdaki yoğun deniz ve liman trafiğiyle giriş çıkışları kontrol ve koordine altında tutabileceğimiz PTS
(Palmarina Traffic Service) sistemi bunların başında geliyor.
Bu sezonda çok ses getirecek bir etkinlik planımız var,
onun üzerinde çalışıyoruz. Muhteşem aktiviteler, flaş konserler, SuperYacht Rendezvous, Fashionweek Swimwear ve
yine uluslararası platforma taşımak istediğimiz Yazz&Jazz
Fest bunların arasından şimdilik verebileceğim birkaç sır.
Bence bu sezon Palmarina Bodrum’un yaratacağı sarsıntıya
hazır olmak gerekiyor. Oldukça eğlenceli, deniz, müzik ve
enerji dolu bir 2014 sezonu bizleri bekliyor.

THIS SUMMER WILL BE FULL OF SURPRISES!
Palmarina Bodrum loves saying “Good Morning” to the magnificient spring mornings of this unique peninsula. It salutes
some mornings with “Kalimera”, some with “Buongiorno”, and
even some mornings with “Buenos Dias”. Known all over the
Mediterranean, the most prestigious yachting region in the
world, Palmarina Bodrum already proved to be a distinctive
marina that became envied, acclaimed and well regarded with
the quality it achieved in such a short time. We take justified
pride in reaching this goal, which we set when we set off on
this journey, in merely two years.
What have we done in the last three months that you didn’t
hear from us? Let’s take a look at the recent past together.
As Palmarina Bodrum sailing team, skippered by me, we
joined the Credit Suisse Primo Cup held between 7-9 February
during one of our Monaco visits which we frequently have had
especially for the last three months due to our close relations
and joint projects with the super yacht companies and clubs in
the region. At the trophy, which was quite fun despite the unfavourable weather conditions and mishaps, we had to settle
with the ninth place -failing to come the last- with our J70 class
boat that we used for the first time. We had lots of laughs,
very much enjoyed the organisation, and told the curious
friends over there quite a lot about Palmarina and Turkey. On
the other hand, in March on invitation, we joined UIM Powerboats Class 1 World Championship prize-giving ceremony held
in Monte Carlo, as guests.
At 15 December, we started the third and last phase of our
construction. Moreover, 33 new units joined the existing 65
stores in Palmarina Mall. 28 of these are stores of nationwide
or international brands while the other 5 are elegant restaurants offering delicate tastes, along with exquisite cafes and
lounge bars. Furthermore, we expanded our green space, which
we esteem as part of our identity, and increased the diversity
and volume of the trees and plants. No offense, but we always
do and will prioritise our children. We designed the nicest and
most fun water park in the Bodrum peninsula for them. We
wish the kids as well to enjoy the privileges of Palmarina Bod-
rum with the 650 m2 swimming pool, indoor Xbox game center, mini zoo, various game/activity areas and Good Morning
Kids Restaurant that we thought up just for this project. Ensuring the minimum 6.5 m. depth for the mega yacht berths,
the energy structure providing up to 1000 kVA, and PTS (Palmarina Traffic Service) system which will be the first to be used
in Turkey and help us control and coordinate the heavy traffic
in and out of our marina are the main things we are working on
for the berthing area.
We are also working on an activity plan that will make a
tremendous impact on this season. I can only tell there will
be magnificent activities, great concerts, SuperYacht Rendezvous, Fashionweek Swimwear, and Yazz&Jazz Fest that we
mean to carry onto international platform, but these are just
the tip of the iceberg. You had better be ready for the action
Palmarina will bring to this season. A new season full of fun,
music, energy and the sea is awaiting us.

İlişki: Buzulların eriyip karaları yuttuğu bir dünyada, tekneler ev
olur. Bu yeni dünyaya mükemmelen uyum sağlamış, hatta mutasyon geçirmiş isimsiz denizcinin trimaranı da o dünyanın en konforlu evidir.
Rota: Takas için yüzen kasabaları gezen denizcinin huzuru bir kadın
ve kız çocuğu yüzünden bozulur. Onlara “kuru toprakları” bulmalarında yardım etmek için dünya denen tek parça okyanusun
bilinmeyenine yelken açar.
Sonuç: Yolcular aradığını buldu ama yalnız kaptan trimaranıyla
okyanusa döndü.
MARINER – TRIMARAN
Relation: In a world where glaciers melt and devour the lands,
boats become homes. The trimaran of a nameless mariner who
has perfectly adapted to this new world is maybe the most comfortable of those homes.
Destination: Roaming the floating towns for barter, the mariner
bids farewell to his peaceful life because of a woman and a little
girl. He sails towards single-piece ocean, known as the earth, to
help them finding “the dry lands”.
Conclusion: Passengers find what they are looking for, yet the
lonely captain heads back to the ocean with his trimaran.

EDWARD J. SMITH - RMS TITANIC
İlişki: Sanayi devriminin mağrur devi, asla batmaz denen transatlantikle ona sonuna kadar sadık kaptanının hazin hikayesi.
Rota: 10 Nisan 1912’de yola çıkan gemi Southampton’dan New
York’a gidiyordu.
Sonuç: Geminin yolculuğu Newfoundland’ın 375 mil güneyinde
bir buzdağıyla çarpışmasıyla sona erdi. Kaptan Smith ve yaklaşık 1500 yolcu 15 Nisan 1912’de hızla Atlantik’in soğuk sularına
gömüldü.
EDWARD J. SMITH - RMS TITANIC
Relation: The sad story of the allegedly unsinkable transatlantic,
the proud giant of the industrial revolution, and her captain who
is loyal to her to the end.
Destination: The ship left Southampton on 10 April 1912, heading for New York.
Conclusion: The voyage of the ship came to an end when it hit
an iceberg 375 miles south of Newfoundland. Captain Smith and
around 1500 passengers lost their lives in the freezing waters of
the Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912.

(The Life Aquatic Wth Steve Zissou)
STEVE ZISSOU – BELAFONTE
İlişki: Wes Anderson’ın Jacques Cousteau’ya ithafı olan Steve Zissou karakteri ünlü bir oşinograf ve belgesel yapımcısı. Zissou, Calypso’ya şarkılar söyleyen Harry Belafonte’nin anısına takdis ettiği
gemisi Belafonte’yle (Cousteau’nun gemisinin adı da Calypso’dur)
hayatını okyanusun harikalarını insanlarla paylaşmaya adamıştır.
Rota: Son belgeselinin yapımında yakın arkadaşı Esteban jaguar
köpekbalığı tarafından öldürülür. Zissou, arkadaşının intikamını
almak için Melville’in Ahab’ı misali jaguar köpekbalığının peşine
düşer.
Sonuç: Okyanusta hasmını bulan Zissou onun güzelliğiyle büyülenir ve kan davasından vazgeçer.

Relation: The colourful character Steve Zissou, Wes Anderson’s
dedication to Jacques Cousteau, is a famous oceanographer and
documentary film maker. Zissou has devoted his life to sharing
the wonders of the oceans with people. His home during all his
voyages is his ship Belafonte, whom he christened in memory of
Harry Belafonte known for the songs he sang for Calypso.
Destination: During the making of his last documentary, Zissou’s
buddy Esteban was killed by a jaguar shark. To avenge his death,
Zissou went after the jaguar shark, like Melville’s Ahab.
Conclusion: Having finally found his foe, Zissou got mesmerized
by its beauty and gave up chasing his vengeance.

Deniz bir aileyi parçalara ayırabilir, insanlara hiç
beklemedikleri sorumluluklar yükleyebilir, hatta
deniz bir ülkeyi biraraya getirebilir. Rıfat Ilgaz
(1911-1993) Halime Kaptan eserinde bütün bu
hikayeyi olanca gerçekliğiyle anlatıyor.
Roman 1910’ların sonunda başlıyor. Balkan
Savaşları’ndan itibaren Osmanlı topraklarında
neredeyse 10 yıl kesintisiz savaş yaşanmış, 1.
Dünya Savaşı’nda bozguna uğranmış, Anadolu
işgal altında. Bugün Kastamonu’ya bağlı Cide’de
kocasını askere göndermiş Halime hikayenin
merkezinde. Yaşlı kayınpederi Temel Reis ve
ailenin küçük çocuklarıyla kıt kanaat geçinmeye
çalışıyorlar. Ancak Temel Reis hayatını kaybediyor. Ailenin yükü artık Halime’nin omzuna binmişken o da çözümü denizde arıyor ve kayığıyla Karadeniz’in azgın sularına açılıyor. Tam da Anadolu’da Milli
Mücadele’nin dirildiği dönemler. Ve artık Halime değil, Halime
Kaptan olan kadın Karadeniz’de eşkıyalarla mücadele edip ekmeğini çıkarmaya çalışırken Anadolu’daki dirilişe destek vermeye
çalışıyor. Kafkas topraklarından, Karadeniz’in farklı kıyılarından
İnebolu’ya silah taşıyan bir kahramana dönüşüyor.
Romanda Anadolu’nun en kritik dönemlerinden biri tam da bu
dönemi yaşamış birinin imzasıyla aktarılıyor. Rıfat Ilgaz 1911’da
Cide’de doğdu. 1. Dünya Savaşı ve Kurtuluş Savaşı gölgesinde
büyüdü. Ve hatta Ilgaz’ın Halime Kaptan’la bizzat tanıştığı,
çocukken onun anılarından etkilendiği iddia edilir. Ilgaz, aynı
zamanda bir ülkenin yeni merkezinin, Ankara’nın can damarlarından birine tanık oluyordu. Zira İnebolu, Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın
seyrini etkileyecek bir öneme sahipti. İstanbul’dan savaşa katılmak üzere gelenlerin yanı sıra özellikle Sovyet Rusya’dan savaş
gereçleri taşıyan gemilerin ve sandalların ilk limanı İnebolu’ydu.
Baştan sona deniz kokan ve “100 Temer Eser” listesinde yer
alan bu roman, denizin insan hayatında ne derece önemli olabileceğini gösteren ölümsüz bir eser.

The sea can tear a family apart, put responsibilities on one’s shoulders, and even unite a country. In Captain Halime, Rıfat Ilgaz (1911-1993)
tells this story as real as it gets.
The story begins in the late 1910s. The Ottoman lands have seen non-stop wars for almost
10 years, the World War I has been a debacle
and Anatolia was invaded. The novel centers
on Halime, who has sent her husband off to
military service, in Kastamonu, Cide. Halime
tries to make ends meet with her old fatherin-law Captain Temel and kids. Yet, Temel Reis
loses his life. All the burden of the family is laid
on Halime’s shoulders; and looking for a solution on the sea, she puts out to the treacherous
waters of the Black Sea on her rowboat. These
are the times when the National Movement is awakening. And
Halime, now Captain Halime, supports this revival in Anatolia,
while she tries to make a living and struggles against the bandits
of the Black Sea. She becomes a hero who transports weapons
from Caucasian lands and coasts of the Black Sea to İnebolu.
In the novel, one of the most critical eras of Anatolia is told
by someone who actually lived through it. Rıfat Ilgaz was born
in Cide in 1911. He grew up under the shadows of the World War
I and the War of Independence. He is even claimed to have met
Captain Halime in person and been quite impressed by her memories while he was a kid. What Ilgaz witnessed at the time laid
the foundations of Ankara, the new center of a nation, because
İnebolu was a critical point which later would affect the course
of the War of Independence. İnebolu was the initial port for the
ones who came from İstanbul to join the war as well as the ships
and boats transporting ordnance from Soviet Russia.
With the smell of the sea all over, Captain Halime, also included in the “100 Fundamental Novels” list, is an immortal novel
that shows us how big a role the sea can play in someone’s life.

Malzemeler:
-1 kg. un
-3 bardak soğuk su
-16 gr. tuz
-30 gr. zeytinyağı
-Maya (30 gr. yaş maya veya 15 gr. kuru maya)
YAPILIŞI:
Tüm malzemeler uygun bir kapta karıştırılır. Elde edilen hamur yoğurulur.
Yoğrulan hamurun üzerine zeytinyağı sürülür ve kabın içinde 70 dakika oda ısısında
bekletilir. Bolca unlanmış bir zemine, içinde
hamur bulunan kap ters çevrilmek suretiyle
çıkartılır.
Hamur üzerine basınç uygulamadan,
yanlarından yavaşça çekilerek 3 cm.’e kadar
incelecek şekilde açılır ve hamur dörde
bölünür.
Sonrasında tepsiye yerleştirilip, rüzgârsız
bir yerde 25 dakika bekletilir. Bıçakla X
şeklinde bohça biçimi verilir.
Ekmeğin pişirileceği fırın 210 C’ye getirilip
içine bir kap su konulur. Isınmış fırına tepsi
yerleştirilir.
7 dakika sonra fırındaki su olan kap çıkarılır.
Ekmeğin pişme süresi toplam 25 dakikadır.

HIGHLAND BREAD
Ingredients:
-1 kg. flour
-3 glasses cold water
-16 gr. salt
-30 gr. olive oil
-Yeast (30 gr. fresh or 15 gr. dry yeast)
DIRECTIONS:
Mix all the ingredients in an appropriate
bowl. Knead the dough you get from the
mix.
Rub olive oil on the dough and leave it
in the bowl in room temperature for 70
minutes.
Let the dough drop on a well floured surface by turning the bowl upside down.
Spread the dough, without pressure on it,
by gently pulling the sides until it is 3 cm.

Place them on a tray and leave in a windless place for 25 minutes. Put an X mark on
each with a knife.
Put a bowl of water in the oven and heat it
to 210oC. Place the tray in the heated oven.
Take the bowl of water out of the oven

Geçtiğimiz yaz, sezon öncesi Palmali Grup bünyesinde bulunan 50 metrelik megayat
Palmalife’ta iki gece konaklayıp seyre çıktık. Palmalife, 50 metre boyunda muhteşem
bir yelkenli tekne. Sinan Özer’e ait Agean Yacht tarafından 2007 yılında inşa edilmiş.
Daha sonra da Palmarina Genel Direktörü Levent Baktır’ın yönetiminde yelken arması
elden geçirilmiş.
Bu güzel yelkenlinin şef aşçısı Kadir Tuna, bizim ekibe harika yemekler yapmıştı.
Teknede o kadar güzel ağırlandık, Yalıkavak civarındaki cennet gibi koylarda öyle
keyifli anlar yaşadık ki, içimden geldi korsan bir şekilde teknenin mutfağına daldım.
Kuzinenin soğuk hava dolabını karıştırırken denizlerin sekiz kollu harikası ahtapotları gördüm ve dayanamayıp büyük denizcimiz Sadun Boro’dan öğrendiğim şekliyle
pişirmeye başladım.

IN PALMALIFE
MERİÇ KÖYATASI IS INFILTRATING THE CUISINE OF PALMALIFE AND TELLING US
THE SPECIFICS OF HOW TO COOK AN OCTOPUS SADUN BORO STYLE.
Last summer, before the start of the season, we went on a cruise and spent two
nights on board Palmalife, a mega yacht owned by Palmali Group. Palmalife is a
splendid 50 meter sailboat. It was built by Sinan Özer’s Aegean Yacht in 2007 and
its rig was overhauled by a team led by Palmarina General Manager Levent Baktır.
Kadir Tuna, the chef of this beautiful sailboat, cooked excellent dishes for us. We
were hosted so well and spent such a good time in the heavenly coves around Yalikavak that after a while I felt like diving into the cuisine like a pirate. Going through the
stuff in the fridge I saw octopuses, the eight-armed marvels of the sea, and couldn’t
resist cooking some the way I learned from our great seaman Sadun Boro.
Our dear host Levent Baktır had to get back to work on the second day of our trip
leaving the job of hosting us to Captain Selim and Kadir Tuna. A decision which he
later deeply regretted when he heard about the octopuses I cooked. Yet, he was well

işlerin başına geçip, bizi ağırlama görevini Selim Kaptan ile Kadir
Tuna’ya havale etmişti. Ahtapotu kaçırdığını öğrenince de hayıflandı. Daha sonra kendisine sevgili Sait’te ahtapot pişirip gönlünü aldım. Son Boat Show’da Palmalife’ta yaşadığımız gezi ve
yemek organizasyonunu bir daha yapma kararı aldık. Sadun Boro
usulü ahtapotun tarifini marinanın dergisinde yazmak da bu
kararımızın bir parçası oldu. Şimdi gelelim ahtapotun tarifine…
AHTAPOT SALATASI
Sadun Boro’nun kendine özgü ahtapotu meşhurdur. Sadun Abi,
ahtapotu nasıl pişirdiğini, başkalarına anlatmamak kaydıyla
aralarında benim de olduğum beş altı kişiye öğretmişti. Ancak
daha sonra kıyılarımız için yazdığı Vira Demir adlı rehber kitapta
tarifini verince, bu eşsiz lezzet üzerindeki yayın yasağı da kalktı.
Kafası ayıklanmış, dövülmüş ahtapot bol suyla yıkanır, üzerine
kimyon sıvanır. Çelik bir tencerede (sakın düdüklü tencerede
denemeyin) hiç su konmadan kapağı kapatılarak kısık ateşte
40 dakika kadar kendi buharında pişirilir. Esasında pişme süresi,
ahtapotun iriliğine bağlıdır. 35’inci dakikada tencerenin kapağını
açıp ahtapotun bacağının en kalın yerine çatalı batırın. Çatal kolay çıkıyorsa, pişmiş demektir. Ahtapot piştiğinde tencerede üç
parmak kadar kızıl kahverengi su salacaktır. Bu yöntemle pişirmede ahtapot üçte ikiye yakın fire verir. Ben 2,5 kilo bir ahtapotu
tencereden 850 gram olarak çıkarmıştım. Sirkeli su ya da şaraplı
suyla haşlanan ahtapotla uzaktan yakından ilgisi yoktur. Piştikten sonra, ahtapotu soğumaya bırakın. Kollarının iç kısmında ince
bir zar vardır. Onu temizleyin ama üzerindeki vantuzlar kalsın.
Ahtapotları yarım parmak uzunluğunda doğrayın. Daha sonra
da iki sıra vantuzun ortasından ikiye bölerek kesin. İçi pamuk gibi
beyaz, dışı vantuzlu kızıl kahverengi kalsın.
Gelelim sosuna… Bir tatlı kaşığı hardal, üzerine azar azar limon
suyu dökülerek eritilir. Zeytinyağı konur. Ahtapotun vantuzları
tuzlu olduğundan tuz konmaz. Karabiber, arzuya göre kırmızı pul
biber karıştırılır. Ahtapotun saldığı kendi suyundan da üç dört yemek kaşığı eklenir. İnce kıyılmış maydanozla süslenip servis edilir.

pleased when I cooked one for him later at dear Sait’s place. At
the latest boat show we decided to organize another cruise on
Palmalife. That was also when we decided to write Sadun Boro’s
recipe on how to cook an octopus in the magazine of the marina.
OCTOPUS SALAD
Sadun Boro’s unique recipe is a well-known one. I remember him
revealing its secrets to five or six people including myself providing only that we are never to tell another soul. However, when he
shared the recipe in his Turkish waters pilot book Vira Demir, we
were no more compelled by the oath we had taken.
Remove the head of the battered octopus and wash it well. After rubbing it all over with cumin, put it in a steel pot (not in a
pressure cooker), close the lid without adding any water (this
is important), and let it cook with its own steam for about 40
minutes over low heat. How much time it needs actually depends on how big it is. After 35 minutes, try sticking the fork
in one of the legs where it is the thickest. If you can easily pull
the fork out, it means the octopus is cooked. That is when you
will see about three finger height of brown water. Cooked this
way, octopus loses around two thirds of it. The 2,5 kg octopus
was merely 800gr when I took it out of the pot. This, of course,
doesn’t happen when you boil it with water mixed with wine or
vinegar. When the octopus is cooked, leave it to cool. Inside its
tentacles is a membrane. Skin it but leave the suckers. Slice the
octopus in half a finger long pieces. Then cut the tentacles vertically through the two lines of suckers on each tentacle. It should
be cotton white on the inside and reddish brown with suckers on
the outside.
As for the sauce... Melt a dessert spoonful of mustard while
dripping lemon juice on it little by little. Add some olive oil. Don’t
add any salt, as the tentacles are already salty. Add some black
pepper, and some chili powder if you wish. Finally, add three or
four spoonful of the water octopus has released while cooking,
and serve the dish decorated by some finely chopped parsley.

As the first mega yacht mooring port
project of Turkey, which started serving with full capacity in 2013, Palmarina
Bodrum is continuing to attract the attention of all kinds of boat and marine
enthusiasts in various organisations.
Palmarina Bodrum’s exclusiveness
was easy to notice also in the biggest organisation of the maritime sector in the
region. Titled as CNR Eurasia Boat Show,
7th International Boat, Marine Equipment and Accessories Show was held
between 15-23 February in Istanbul this
year. Palmarina Bodrum took its place
among the participants of the show and
got together once again with boat and
yacht enthusiasts.
While fun activities were held at the
stand, visitors were given special discount offers. Boat owners who visited
Palmarina Bodrum stand and signed a
contract were given 5 percent discount
for boats with an area of 45-120 m2, 10
percent for 121-250 m2 and 15 percent for

of Palmarina Bodrum; they also knew
what kind of a world was awaiting them.
Some others, on the other hand, were
discovering the generous hospitality of
Palmarina Bodrum at CNR.
While the guests enjoyed various surprises accompanied by Pal Radyo DJs’
sets, on 15 February the stand hosted a
cocktail party, at which the menu was
prepared by Cipriani. With lots of people
joining and having fun, the party became
the talk of the show afterwards. Besides, the holographic sea view through
the porthole at the stand aroused much
interest.

Monaco Primo Cup, Europe’s one of
the most important and biggest sailing
events in terms of participation was organised between 31 January-9 February
this year. It was Palmarina Bodrum team
who represented us in the 30th edition
of the race.
The Cup in Monaco which has hosted
winter regattas since the 19th century,
both announces the start of the racing
season and presents the teams a challenging opportunity to try their new
boats. Welcoming teams from about 15
nations including France, Austria, En-
gland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden, the races
also hosted a Turkish team, Palmarina
Bodrum, this year.

Karakaplan. The team raced honourably
against the world-famous sailors, but
the sole purpose wasn’t racing; besides
strengthening cultural bonds, the team’s
intention was to represent Turkey and
publicise the vision of Palmarina Bodrum
brand.
In his speech before the race, Levent
Baktır stated that the brand would soon
develop a cooperation with ‘Monaco
Yacht Club known as a prestigious club
which is loyal to rules and principles and
has committed itself to convey maritime
culture and heritage to next generations
in the best possible way.”
This was the second time Palmarina
Bodrum was a guest in Monaco. Palmarina Bodrum, was bought by Palmali
Group in May 2011 and renovated completely before it started to serve with full
capacity in June 2013.
The first time the brand got acquaint-
ed with Monaco was at Monaco Yacht
Show, held between 25-27 September
2013; and it made its grand entrance into
the world marina society by organising a
VIP party at the show. Palmarina Bodrum aims to expand its cultural vision
with cultural activities such as concerts
and exhibitions along with its investments in the region and attempts to
draw the traffic of middle to large range
yachts, roaming actively in the Mediterranean, to Turkish waters.

İçinde deniz geçmeyen tek bir kitabınız
bile yok. İlk tanıştığınız anı hatırlıyor
musunuz?
İnsan ilk adımını nasıl hatırlamazsa ben
de denize ilk ne zaman girdiğimi, ilk kulacımı ne zaman attığımı hatırlamıyorum. Ama kendimi bildim bileli yüzüyorum. Çocukluğum Trabzon’da geçti.
Evimizin çok güzel bir terası vardı. Bizim
evin terası da limana bakardı. Akşamüstleri mahallenin kadınları bizim terasta
toplanırdı. Evde yaptıkları poğaçalar,
kekler getirilir, semaverde çay demlenir
ve beklenirdi. Beklenen şey, limandaki
beyaz geminin ışıklarını yakmasıydı. Ne
zaman ki geminin ışıkları yanardı, bir alkış
kıyamet kopardı terasta. O ışıkların denize yansıması benim çocukluğumun en
önemli anlarından biriydi.
Denizaltılar özellikle şiirlerinizde, kitaplarınızda ve anladığımız kadarıyla hayatınızda önemli yer tutuyor. Neden?
İki hikayesi var bunun. Birincisi; ben
çocukken bir Kabotaj Bayramı’nda, limana bir denizaltı gelmişti. İlk kez o zaman
görmüş ve çok etkilenmiştim. Oyuncak
bir denizaltım olsun çok istedim. Tüccar
terzi olan babam mal almak için İstanbul’a gider gelir ve bana denizaltı arardı.
Ama hiç bulamadı. İkincisi de; beş yaşında sünnet olurken fotoğrafçı poz olsun
diye elime bir oyuncak vermişti. Bu bir
oyuncak gemiydi. Elime verdi, “Gül” dedi.
Ben hiç gülmedim. Çünkü biliyordum ki
onu benden alacak. Fotoğrafı çekti ve
oyuncak gemiyi elimden aldı. Birkaç gün
sonra fotoğraflar eve geldi, ben elimde

You haven’t written one book that
doesn’t have the sea in it. Do you remember your first acquintance with it?
Just as a person cannot recall their first
step, I also cannot recall the first time
I’ve been or swum in a sea. Yet I knew
how to swim for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Trabzon. Our house had
a beautiful terrace that overlooked the
port. The women of the neighborhood
would gather on our terrace at dusks.
They would bring the pastries and cakes
they made, we would make some tea,
and then wait. The thing we were waiting for was the white ship at the port to
turn its lights on. Once the lights were
on, we would all cheer loudly on the terrace. The reflection of those lights on the
sea was one of the most important imageries of my childhood.
Submarines have an important place in
your poems, books and as far as we can
tell, in your life. Why?
I need to tell you two stories for that.
First; when I was a child, on a Cabotage
Day, a submarine had docked at the port.
That was the first time I saw one and I
was fascinated. I badly wanted to have
a toy submarine. My father, who was a
merchant tailor, used to go to Istanbul to
buy goods and look for a submarine for
me. But he couldn’t ever find one.
As for the second story; when I was
five, during my circumcision, the photographer handed me a toy to take my
picture with it in my hand. It was a toy
ship. He gave it to me, and said, “Smile”.

tuttuğum gemiye hayran hayran baktım. “Bunu benden niye aldılar ki” diye
dert edindim. Oyuncak müzesini kurmaya karar verdikten sonra her yerde
o oyuncak gemiyi aradım. Avrupa’daki
bütün oyuncakçılarda, koleksiyoncularda. Sonunda Almanya’da bir kentte antika oyuncak satan bir dükkanda buldum,
aldım ve koşarak çıktım oradan, kimse bir
daha alamasın diye.
Böylesine bir tutku... Peki şu an hayatınızın ne kadarı denizle haşır neşir
geçiyor?
Bunu yapacak zamanım yok maalesef.
Müzeyi yaşatmak için çok çalışıyorum,
çok yazıyorum. Deniz çok ayrı bir enstrüman ve ben şu an elimdeki enstrümanı bırakıp yenisini alamıyorum.
Vaktiniz olsa nasıl şımartırdınız kendinizi?
Sadun Boro gibi dünya turuna çıkmak
sanırım bütün serüvenci insanların hayalidir. Benim de hayalim bu.

Acaba denizle ilgili sizi en çok çeken şey
nedir?
Merak duygsu. Ufkun ötesindeki, bilinmeyen yerlere gitmek, hiç görmediğin
kıyıları görmek, kültürleri tanımak en
büyüleyici şey. Define Adası’yla büyüyen
bizler için gitmek böyle bir şey.
Kıymetini biliyor muyuz denizlerin?
Biz deniz kaçkını bir milletiz. Cemal
Süreya der ya; “Fatih Sultan Mehmed
gemilerini karadan yürüttü ya... Deniz
kaçkını bir ulusun çocuklarıyız biz o gün
bugündür”. Derslerde bize komşularımızı
öğrettiler ama denizleri değil; karadaki
komşularımızı. Karadeniz, Ege ve Akdeniz’in en iyi komşularımız olduğu söylenmedi. Halbuki ne zarar gördük denizlerimizden. Denizi doldurup yol yapmayı
marifet sandık. Oysa denizin kendisi bir
yoldur. Milyonlarca yıl bir mücevher gibi
işler kıyıyı. Biz bunları yok ettik. Barbaros’un, Kılıç Ali Paşa’nın çocuklarıyız
diye övünürken buna hakkımız var mıydı
acaba?
I didn’t. Because I knew he was going
to take the ship back later. He took the
picture, and then the toy back. We were
delivered the pictures a few days later,
I remember looking at the ship in my
hand adoringly. I kept asking “Why did
they take it away from me?” and fretted over it. After I decided to found the
toy museum, I looked everywhere for
that toy ship. Searched every toy store,
asked every collector in Europe. At long
last, I found it in a store in Germany,
which sold antique toys. I got the toy
and ran out of the place, to keep it from
anyone who might again take it away
from me.
Such a passion... How much do you
mingle with the sea these days?
I don’t have much time for it unfortunately. I work hard to keep the museum alive, I write a lot. The sea is a whole
different instrument and I can’t leave
the one in my hand and pick another up
right now.
As Cemal Süreya says, “Ever since Mehmed the Conqueror
transported his ships overland, we have been the children
of a nation of sea runaways.”
How would you spoil yourself?
I believe circumnavigating like Sadun
Boro is the dream of every adventurer.
That is also my dream.
What attracts you most about the sea?
Curiosity. To go to the unknown places
beyond the horizon, to see the coasts
you’ve never seen, to get to know cultures... It’s very fascinating. This is what
“to go” means for the like of me who
grew up with Treasure Island.
Do you think we appreciate the sea?
We are a nation of sea runaways. As Cemal Süreya says, “Ever since Mehmed
the Conqueror transported his ships
overland, we have been the children of
a nation of sea runaways.” At school
we were only taught about our neighbor
countries, but not our seas. No one told
us The Black Sea, The Aegean Sea and
The Mediterranean were the best of our
neighbors. We make roads where there
is a sea by extending the land and think
this is an accomplishment. Yet, the sea
itself is a road. It’s been engraving the
coasts like a jewel for millions of years.
We destroyed them. Did we have the
right to do this while priding ourselves
in being the children of Hayreddin Barbarossa and Kılıç Ali Pasha?

İlkbahar-Yaz 2014 sezonu şıklığının hikayesi Yargıcı’yla yazılacak. Daha önce

Bu, denizcilik tarihinin en gözüpek adamlarından Joshua Slocum’un 19. yüzyılda yelkenlisiyle buharlı gemilere meydan okumasının hikayesi. Hayatı boyunca ABD’nin en iyi teknelerine
kaptanlık yaptı, en dalgalı okyanusları, en zorlu boğazları defalarca geçti, hayatının aşkıyla Avustralya’da tanıştı ve evlendi;

Slocum’un hikayesi 1844’te Kanada’da Mount Hanley kasabasında başladı. Slocum sekiz yaşına geldiğinde 11 çocuklu ailesi

tanıştı, kısa sürede evlendiler. Virginia eşini hiç yalnız bırakmadı,
hepsi denizde olmak üzere yedi çocuk dünyaya getirdiler (Üçü
çocuk yaşta hayatını kaybedecekti).
1881’de dönemin en iyi Amerikan yelkenlisi olarak gösterilen
233ft’lik Northern Light 2’nin kaptanlığına ve kısmi hissesine
sahip oldu. Artık zirvedeydi, hayallerinin gerçeğe dönüştüğünü
düşünmüştü, mutlu ailesi, bol parası vardı. Ama her zirvenin bir
yandan düşüşün başlangıcı olduğunu henüz fark etmemişti.
O dönemde yelkenli gemiler, yerini buharlı gemilere çoktan

This is the story of Joshua Slocum, one of the most daring men
in the maritime history, who challenged steamboats with his
sailboat in the 19th century. As the captain of the best American
boats, Slocum steered through the most rampant oceans and
tough straits many times throughout his life. He met the love
of his life in Australia, got married, then lost her in Argentina.
Then he lost a ship on the waters of Brazil, ended his career, and
hit one of his rock bottoms. Then again, he didn’t give up and
sailed single-handedly around the world at 54 making a journey
still inspiring many sailors today.
His story began in 1844 in a small town called Mount Hanley,
Canada. When he was eight, his family with eleven children had
financial difficulties and moved to Brier, a small island of the
same state, to run a boot shop. Having attended school two
more years, Slocum started working for the shop. Yet, even at
that age all he could think of was the sea and the boats on the
shore. He lost his mother when he was sixteen, and it was time
to weigh anchor. He signed up on a ship that was heading for
Dublin as a crew. He was to go back home only 35 years later.
In the years that followed, partly thanks to the expertise he
developed on navigation, he stepped up fast in marine life. He
gained great experience in a very short time. In Sydney where
he went for a month, he met the love of his life Virginia Albertina Walker, and married her shortly after. Virginia never left his
husband, and the couple had seven kids on seas, sadly losing
three of them while they were still infants.
In 1881 he became the captain and shareholder of 233ft
Northern Light 2, an American sailboat regarded as the best of
the time. He was at the peak, thinking his dreams finally came
true, he had a happy family and plenty of money. But he was yet
to see every peak is the beginning of a fall.
It was the time when steamboats were gradually taking sailboats’ place and mechanical malfunctions in Slocum’s sailboat
started costing more and more. So, he had to sell his share and
bid his farewell to the boat. Later, he started transporting cargo
between North and South America on his new ship Aquidneck.

girişti. 1899-1900 arası yazdıkları parçalar halinde yayımlanmaya başladı. 1900’de Sailing Alone Around the World’ü (İlk Defa
Tek Başına: Yelkenle Dünya Turu, Naviga Yayınları, 2011) tek
parça halinde yayımladı.
Bir yıl kadar çiftlik hayatını denedi ama denizden uzak kalamadı, Spray’le seyre çıkmaya devam etti. 1909’a gelindiğinde
tekrar yelken açmaya karar verdi ve Uruguay’a doğru yola çıktı. Bu onun son yolculuğu oldu. Kendisinden haber alınamadı
ve uzun yıllar arama çalışmaları yürütüldü. Sonunda 1924’te
hukuken ölü kabul edildi.

In 1884, while in Brazil, he lost Virginia, the one person he valued
the most, due to a heart failure. Slocum went back to the USA.
Two years after losing his wife, he married his 24-year-old cousin Henrietta Elliot. The newly-married couple headed for Uruguay on Aquidneck with two of Slocum’s kids from his former
marriage. This was a journey that turned out to be a disaster in
many ways. A storm hit the ship causing a lot of the cargo to
be lost. Part of the crew got cholera, the ship was attacked by
pirates, smallpox killed three members of the crew before the
worst nightmare of any sailor came true: His ship sank somewhere south of Brazil with all the cargo they were carrying. His
career as a merchant ship captain ended. To get back to the
USA he had to build another boat. On the same day he set sail
again, 13 May 1888, slavery was abolished in Brazil and he christened his boat as Liberdade, “freedom” in Portugese.
When they got back in the USA, Henrietta took the kids and
moved in with her relatives. Having lost all he had, his wife,
family, money and even his job, Slocum started reevaluating his
life. There was no place for his sailboats in the industrial seamanship, so why wouldn’t he sail the seas on a small boat with
a small crew? Or even alone?
He rebuilt his next boat Spray, which was ruin when a friend
gave him. On 24 April 1895, he set sail from Boston. When he
reached the Gibraltar, he got warnings concerning pirate actions
in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, so he steered towards
the Magellan Strait. He sailed through the toughest straits and
cliffs. And after three years two months and two days of a journey through the most challenging spots of the ocean, he got
back to Newport on 27 June 1898. He became the first person to
sail single-handedly around the world and all the newspapers
were talking about him. He wrote and published his story piece
by piece between 1899 and 1900. Then it was all collected in his
book Sailing Alone Around the World in 1900.
He tried farm life for about a year, but not being able to stay
away from the sea, he kept going on cruises on Spray. In 1909 he
decided again to set sail the seas and steered towards Uruguay.
That turned out to be his last joruney. No-one heard from him
and search operations were conducted for years. In the end he
was legally accepted dead in 1924.
The legendary name of maritime history lived quite an extraordinary life. Though born in a poor family, he managed to
climb his way to the peak. He was walked out on, lost his loved
ones, hit rock bottom, yet found the strength to reach new
peaks. He wrote a book regarded as a maritime classic. And
even after his death his name still lives on many sailors’ boat.

Patmos, the northernmost of the Twelve Islands, has quite
a significant history with regard to Christianity. It is said that
while John the Apostle was in exile on this island, Jesus appeared to him. Thus, the Monastery of St. John on the top
of the island is a pilgrimage point for Christians. The manuscripts and Ottoman rescripts in the museum within the
monastery are worth attention. You will immediately notice
that serenity is the sole ruler of Patmos. So much so that
Forbes magazine has put the island on top of its “most idyllic places to live” list. The small restaurants and cafes of the
island serves icy water and retsina, the Greek table wine, as

The cruise to Kos takes 1.5 hours from Bodrum. Once you are
there, you have a good reason to delay visiting Asclepeion, the
castle and the museum: As soon as you leave Kos Marina, you
should find a tavern to have some calamari first. After calamari,
let the city tour begin! You can visit Ancient Greek city market,
the castle built by the Knights Hospitaller or the mosque built
by the Ottomans. The tree under which ancient Greek physician
Hippocrates, guessed to be born in this city, is believed to give

It may be early for the august wine festival, but if you have a
chance, try and catch a full moon in Lipsi. You can go shopping
or for a walk on the port of this quiet island that has managed
to protect itself from touristic crowds. If you go further to the
north, you will pass by a lovely neighbourhood with a nice church
and houses. You can dine at one of the little restaurants and
drop by the gift shops. Back at the port, it is quite possible you
get charmed by the smell of the cookies and cakes spreading
from the patisserie and spoil yourself with some of those fine
pastries. And while you are here, you shouldn’t forget to try the
island’s trademark wine and cheese.

bir çekim merkezi. O kadar ki 1700’ün üzerinde tırmanış rotasına sahip bu ada, sonbahar aylarında artık dünyaca bilinen Kalimnos Tırmanış Festivali’ne ev sahipliği yapıyor. Ayrıca adadan
beş dakikalık mesafedeki Telendos adasına tekneyle geçmek

Geleneksel havasını özenle koruyan bu adanın sakinliğine bakmayın, burası son yüz yılda hayli çetrefilli olayların merkeziydi.
Akdeniz’in en derin doğal limanlarından birine -bugünkü adıyla
Lakki- sahip bu ada, 1912-1945 arası İtalyan işgali döneminde bir
donanma merkeziydi ve Mussolini’nin bir malikanesine ev sahipliği yapıyordu. Burası 1950’lerde akıl hastanesine dönüştürüldü;
Yunanistan’daki 1967 darbesinden sonraysa bir sürgün yeri
olarak kullanıldı. Bugünse artık Akdeniz’de huzur arayanların
başlıca durak yerlerinden. Özellikle adanın doğusundaki küçük
balıkçı yerleşimi Pandeli, ününü hak ediyor. Kumsaldaki tavernalar, köydeki şirin dükkanlar, tepedeki rüzgâr değirmenleri
insanın içini açıyor. Ayrıca adanın farklı yerlerindeki minik plajlardan denize girmek de mümkün.

And then there’s Kalymnos right by Bodrum... Been famous for
sponge diving throughout history, this island has a Maritime
Museum near the port. Amphoras, sponges and weapons retrieved from the sea are exhibited in this lovely, small museum.
You can rent a motorbike and explore the impressive topography
of the island. Kalymnos is also a center of attraction for climbing
enthusiasts; so much so that with over 1700 climbing routes, it
hosts Kalymnos Climbing Festival in fall every year. You can also
pass by Telendos, which is five minutes away from the island, by
boat. Before leaving the island, don’t forget to get a sponge as
a souvenir.

This is an island that has protected its traditional essence with
great care. Yet, don’t let its serenity fool you, it was the center of
many intricate events throughout the last century. Home to one
of the deepest natural harbours –known as Lakki today-, this
island was a naval center during the Italian invasion between
1912-1945 and was home to one of Mussolini’s mansions. The
mansion was converted into a mental institute in 1950s; after
the 1967 coup in Greece, the island was used as a place for exile.
Today, though, it is one of the favourite spots for those who seek
peace and quiet in the Mediterranean. Especially Pandeli, little
fisherman settlement on the east of the island, is a gem. The
taverns at the beach, little village shops and windmills on the hill
give a tranquil feel. If you want to have a swim, little beaches on
various spots of the island are the places to go.
