“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.” Psalm 138:8
Last week I was in Phoenix Arizona for a continuing education event. My experience in Arizona was the same as
every other time that I’ve been there. The skies are completely blue, not a cloud to be seen. The temperature is blazing
hot; this time the thermometer hovered around 115 degrees. The humidity level is very low, so that if you are sweating it
mostly dries when it hits the surface of your skin. In the Phoenix area there aren’t really any trees and there isn’t really
any grass, unless there’s a golf course. Everything is mostly brown and there aren’t many places, besides the indoors, to
hide from the blistering rays of the sun.
What is fascinating about that environment to me are the life forms that have adjusted to living in that superheated dustbowl. There are lizards, spiders, scorpions, cactus varieties, desert predators, palm trees, flowering plants
and shrubbery that all manage to survive on the sparse amount of moisture that is available in that dry climate. I am
certain that the ecosystem must be delicate and finely balanced for all those life forms to continue thriving as they do.
Each life form plays its part and fulfills its purpose in that amazing and beautiful dance of nature that is the desert
southwest.
When I think of our life with God and before God, I am inspired by the intricacies of that southwest ecosystem.
To be certain we all live under the bright light of God’s awareness and vision. “There is nothing new under the sun,” says
the Teacher. And there is nothing in all creation hidden from the searching Eye of God. “There is nowhere I can go,”
says the Psalmist, “where God can not find me. There is nowhere I can flee.” Hebrews 4:13 states, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”
I don’t interpret that scrutinizing Eye of God as something we should live solely in fear of. God shines the bright
light of his attention and intention into our lives that we might flourish and live even in the desert places of our lives.
God intended for you to have a happy and fulfilled life. You are meant to live fully and not just barely exist.
Life is a series of the smallest things connected to each other in the most intricate ways. We tend to think of life
as one big thing, but it isn’t. Our lives are webs of fascinatingly interwoven moments and experiences that exhibit an
interdependency that we can barely imagine, unless we take the time to look closely. The bright light of God’s Son shone
into our lives for a time to help us discover our reason and purpose for existing. So when you feel like you’re living in the
spiritual desert of your existence, let the light of God’s Son shine brightly upon your life.
Think of this day as Son-drenched day. All through this day remember to rejoice and give thanks for the joy of
living. Give thanks for your health and strength. Give thanks for your family and friends. Give thanks for love and understanding. Give thanks for freedom and peace. All through the day, think, act and speak as a blessed child of God.
