British High Commissioner, Mr Ric Todd,
visits ESK – 16 June 2015
On the morning of Tuesday June 16th, the British High
Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr Ric Todd made a visit to
ESK. Mr Todd was greeted by staff and members of the
Student council. Mr Todd took time to have coffee with
the board and Mr MacDonald and Mrs Green before
embarking on a full tour of ESK. Mr Todd enjoyed visiting
the Early Years centre and being shown the chicks which
had hatched in the school incubator and then observed and participated in
some of the science activities being held as part of Science Week at
ESK. Mr Todd took a break in his tour to watch scenes from the Year 6
adaptation of West Side Story (entitled ‘North Side Story’) which was being
rehearsed in the amphitheatre. Mr Todd then meet with members of the
Secondary School and viewed the facilities and work on display. Mr Todd
was impressed with what he witnessed at ESK and wished the students
and staff every success for the new academic year when he hopes to return
to ESK to present the Duke of Edinburgh International Award medals to our
participating students.

Ziyareti – 16 Haziran 2015
16 Haziran Salı sabahı, İngiliz Yüksek Komisyonu Kıbrıs üyesi Mr Ric Todd
ESK’ya bir ziyarette bulundu. ESK turuna çıkmadan önce personel ve
Öğrenci Konseyi temsilcileri tarafından karşılanan Mr Todd, yönetim kurulu,
Mr Macdonald ve Mrs Green ile birlikte kahve içtiler. Okul Öncesi
binamızda bulunan kuluçka makinesinde geçtiğimiz günlerde
yumurtalarından çıkmış olan civcivleri gören Mr Todd, daha sonra Fen
Haftası kapsamında düzenlenen Fen etkinlerini gözlemleyip katılma
olanağı buldu. Mr Todd ziyareti sırasında 6. Sınıf öğrencilerinin ‘Batı Yakası
Hikayesi’nden uyarlanarak ‘Kuzey Yakası Hikayesi’
olarak yeniden adlandırılan ve amfitiyatroda provaları
gerçekleşmekte olan oyunu izlemek için bir mola
verdi. Daha sonra Mr Todd Ortaokul-Lise bölümü
personeli ile tanışıp okulun hizmetleri ve panolardaki
çalışmalar hakkında bilgi edindi. Mr Todd ESK’da
görüp tanık oldukları karşısında oldukça etkilendiğini
ifade ederek önümüzdeki eğitim öğretim yılında her
alanda başarılar dileyip katılan öğrencilere Duke of
Edinburgh International Award Madalyalarını takdim
etmek için yeniden gelme temennisinde bulundu.

Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of
The English School of Kyrenia,
Following on from the last Newsletter we have even more accomplishments to document. We are delighted to inform you that although last year’s IBD results were very good indeed, this year’s
surpassed them by a lot. The global average rises by a small
amount each year, and ours have kept with that international average of 30. This year though a much larger proportion of students
gained impressive scores of 35 or greater placing them in the global top 20% of achievers. Our top performing students achieved 38
points each. This places them among the top 10% of IB graduates
worldwide!
Top scorers were Gizem Ahmetrasit and Derin Eralp both with 38 points, followed by
Selin Orek with 36, Ecem Sinay with 36, and Evrensel Sebep with 35 points each. This
constituted 36% of the IBDP group this year, in comparison to 21% reaching such levels
last year. Gizem also scored a perfect 7 in Physics and Turkish, while Selin gained
three perfect 7s in English, Environmental Systems, and Theatre, and Ecem gained a
perfect 7 in Visual Arts.
We are also very pleased to announce that in twelve subject categories our averages
were well above the global average per subject category, and in five subject categories
our average was 6.0 or greater, (subject category global averages range between about
4.2-5.1 each year).
In our next Newsletter we will detail the university and college placement of our y13
students from 2015.
As you read through I’m sure you will be as impressed as I am by the quality and quantity of events and accomplishments noted in the following pages. We have enjoyed visits
from the British High Commissioner, Mr Ric Todd, as well as the outgoing US Ambassador, Mr John Koenig, both of whom noted how impressed they were by our students,
staff, and school.
The tradition of restlessly pursuing excellence remains our central drive, and I remain
so grateful to my hardworking colleagues, our distinguished founders, our talented students, and last but not at all least you and your family for all of your support.

The English School of Kyrenia’nın tüm öğrencilerine, velilerine, ve
personeline merhaba,
Bu bültende, geçen sayıya göre yazacağımız daha fazla başarıya
sahibiz. Sizlere, öğrencilerimizin bu yıl aldıkları sonuçların geçen yıldan çok daha iyi olduğunu açıklamaktan büyük mutluluk duymaktayız. Global ortalama heryıl biraz yükselmektedir ve bizim öğrencilerimizin not ortalaması, uluslararası ortalama olan 30 seviyesindedir. Bu yıl çok daha fazla öğrencimiz, etkileyici skor olan
35 ile üzerinde notlar almışlar ve dünya çapındaki en yüksek %20’
lik dilime girmişlerdir. En iyi performansı sergileyen öğrencilerimiz
38 puana ulaşmışlardır. Bu seviye; dünyadaki tüm IB mezunlarının
en yüksek %10’luk dilimine denk gelmektedir!
En yüksek not alan öğrencilerimiz, Gizem Ahmetraşit ve Derin Eralp, 38 puan elde
etmişlerdir. Onların hemen ardından 36 puanla Selin Örek ve Ecem Sınay, 35 puanla
Evrensel Sebep gelmektedir. Geçen yıl öğrencilerimizin %21’i, 35 ve üzeri puan
almışken bu yıl bu oran %36’ya yükselmiştir.
Ayrıca, Gizem; Fizik ve Türkçe’den en yüksek not olan 7, Selin ise; İngilizce, Çevresel
Sistemler ve Tiyatro derslerinin her üçünden de en yüksek not olan 7 almıştır. Ecem ise
Görsel Sanatlar dersinden, yine en yüksek puan olan 7 almıştır.
İlaveten memnuniyetle söyleyebiliyoruz ki; 12 derste, ders bazında dünya ortalaması
notların oldukça üzerindeyiz; 5 derste ise okul ortalamamız 6 ve üzerindedir, (ders bazında dünya ortalaması ise her yıl 4.2 ile 5.1 arasında değişmektedir).
Bir sonraki haber bültenimizde, 2015 yılındaki 13. Sınıf öğrencilerimizin yerleştiği üniversite ve yüksekokulların ayrıntılarına yer vereceğiz.
Devam eden sayfalardaki başarıları, etkinliklerin sayısını ve kalitesini okuduğunuzda
etkileneceğinizden eminim. Gerek İngiliz Yüksek Komisyonu, Mr Ric Todd ve gerekse
ABD Büyükelçisi Mr John Koenig, okulumuzu ziyareti sırasında öğrencilerimizden, öğretmenlerimizden ve okuldan ne denli etkilendiklerini vurguladılar.
Mükemmelliği yakalamak adına, durmaksızın süren çalışma geleneğimiz, bizim itici
gücümüzdür. Bu sebeple, çalışkan iş arkadaşlarıma, seçkin kurucularımıza, yetenekli
öğrencilerimize, özellikle desteğiniz için size ve ailenize minnettarlığımı belirtmek
istiyorum.

USA Ambassador to Cyprus visits ESK – 30 June 2015

On Tuesday, June 30th 2015, The English School of Kyrenia was delighted to welcome Mr John Koenig, the USA’s Ambassador to Cyprus.
Mr Koenig met with Secondary school students and gave a talk in the
Great Hall on his life in diplomatic service while also sharing valuable
advice on success. When asked the question, ‘What three attributes
do you think are crucial for success?’, Mr Koenig mentioned four:
passion; sheer hard work and dedication to study; personal appearance; and knowledge of more than one language. Following a Q&A
session with the students and staff, Mr Koenig joined the Board for
coffee before embarking on a tour of the Primary school where he
met with students and teachers.
Kıbrıs ABD Büyük Elçisinin ESK Ziyareti- 30 Haziran 2015

30 Haziran 2015 Salı günü The English School of Kyrenia ABD Kıbrıs Büyük Elçisi Mr John Koenig’i
ağırlamanın keyfini yaşadı. Mr Koenig okulumuz salonunda Ortaokul öğrencilerimizle buluşup onlarla
diplomatik servisteki hayatı hakkında konuşup başarı üzerine değerli tavsiyelerde bulundu. ‘Başarı
için en önemli üç özellik nedir?’ sorusuna cevaben Mr Koenig dört şeyden bahsetti; tutku, sıkı
çalışmak ve çalışmaya kendini adamak; kişisel görünüm ve bir dilden fazla dil bilmek. Öğrenciler ve
öğretmenlerle geçen soru cevap bölümünden sonra Mr Koenig öğretmenleri ve öğrencileri ile
tanışmak için İlkokul turuna çıkmadan önce Yönetim Kurulu ile birlikte kahve içti.

Surprise Presentation in honour of Mr Charman – 8 June 2015

On Monday 8th June 2015 we held a very special flag ceremony assembly. ESK’s first Principal, Mr
David Charman, was invited to attend for a surprise unveiling of a plaque in his honour renaming the
schools front plaza as the ‘David Charman Plaza’. Mr Charman, accompanied by his wife Ann, was
clearly touched by the occasion and took the opportunity to express to students how proud he was to
see how they are developing. He made special mention of the spirit, warmth and humour that exists
among students and staff at ESK and advised them to always seek the joy in all they do.

8 Haziran 2015, Pazartesi günü çok özel bir bayrak töreni gerçekleştirildi. ESK’nın ilk Okul Müdürü
David Charman’ın da davet edildiği bu törende kendisine sürpriz bir plaket takdim edildi; ayrıca
onuruna okulun ön plazasının adı ‘David Charman Plaza’ olarak yeniden adlandırıldı. Bu anlamlı
etkinliğe eşi Ann ile birlikte katılan Charman duygulu anlar yaşadı ve öğrencilerin büyüyüp
olgunlaştığını görmekten ne kadar gurur duyduğunu dile getirme fırsatı buldu. ESK personeli ve
öğrencileri arasındaki ruh, samimiyet ve mizahtan da bahseden Charman, yaptıkları her şeyi keyif
alarak yapmalarını tavsiye etti.

Year 3 Sleepover – 19 June 2015

On Friday 19th June, Year 3 returned to school after
hours dressed in their summer gear and complete with
suitcases and teddies ready for the BIG YEAR 3
SLEEPOVER!
For some this was their first ever night sleeping away
from home and the Year 3 teachers were really impressed at how grown up the children were.
In one evening and one morning they managed to cram
in all sorts including pizza, outdoor cinema viewing, birthday cake, wink wink murder, ice-cream, bed
making, hula hooping, breakfast and team games before returning to some very relaxed looking parents and families!
3. Sınıfların Gece Konaklaması – 19 Haziran 2015

19 Haziran Cuma günü, 3. Sınıf öğrencileri vakitten sonra yazlık kıyafetleri içerisinde, bavulları ve
oyuncak ayıları ile birlikte BÜYÜK 3. SINIF GECE KONAKLAMASI için okula geri döndüler.
Bazıları için bu evden uzakta uyuyacakları ilk gece
olacaktı, buna rağmen göstermiş oldukları olgun davranışlar 3. Sınıf öğretmenlerini oldukça etkiledi.
Bir gece bir günlük konaklamamıza pizza yemek,
açık hava sineması, doğum günü pastası, katil kim,
dondurma, yatak yapımı, hulahop çevirme, kahvaltı
ve takım oyunları gibi çok çeşitli etkinlikler sığdırmayı
başardıktan sonra fazlasıyla dinlenmiş görünen
ebeveyn ve ailelere teslim edildiler!

ESK Charity Club Update: 20 March 2015

The Charity club has been very active over
the past few months. Our main activity in
this time has been to help the refugees in
Nicosia with our ‘Food Bank Project’.
We asked the whole senior school to bring in
mainly dried food and toiletries for collection
in our large wooden box placed outside the
lunch hall. So far the project has gone well:
much food has been donated. Within the
next few days we will be organising to have
the food taken to the place where the refugees are staying.
At the school assembly on Friday 20th March, two representatives from the Refugee Rights Association (MHD), Tegiye Birey and Ozan Demircanlı, came to ESK to give their thanks to the school for all
the donations received. They said that our donations had saved many lives and that, so far, this was
the biggest donation they had received. They were really grateful.
They gave out two certificates: one to the Charity club; the other was given to Year 13 pupils who had
also assisted in the project work.
Looking forward, the Charity club will continue with the food bank until the middle of next term.
ESK Yardımseverlik Kulübü Haberleri: 20 Mart 2015

Yardımseverlik Kulübü geçtiğimiz aylarda oldukça aktif bir süreç geçirdiler. Kulübün ana faaliyeti
‘Yiyecek Bankası Projesi’ ile Lefkoşa’da bulunan mültecilere yardım etmek oldu.
Tüm ortaokul-lise bölümü öğrenci ve öğretmenleri, yemekhanenin girişine yerleştirilen büyük tahta
kutuda biriktirilmek üzere genellikle kuru yiyecekler ve bireysel temizlik malzemelerinden oluşan
bağışlar yapmaları istendi. Halıhazırda proje oldukça başarılı bir şekilde devam ediyor: çok sayıda
yiyecek bağışı yapıldı. Önümüzdeki birkaç gün içersinde yiyeceklerin mültecilere ulaştırılmasına
yönelik organizasyon çalışmalarımıza başlayacağız.
20 Mart, Cuma günü gerçekleşen genel toplantımızda, ESK’yı ziyarete gelen Mülteci Hakları
Derneği’nden iki temsilci, Tegiye Birey ve Ozan Demircanlı teşekkürlerini sundular. Bağışlarımızın pek
çok hayat kurtardığını, ve hatta, bugüne kadar almış
oldukları en büyük bağış olduğunu söyleyerek, dernek
adına müteşekkir olduklarını belirttiler.
Toplantıda iki adet sertifika takdim ettiler: birisi Yardımseverlik Kulübü’ne; diğeri de proje çalışmalarına yardım
eden 13. Sınıf öğrencilerimize.
Bu arada, Yardımseverlik Kulübü, önümüzdeki dönemin
ortasına kadar yiyecek bankası ile ilgili çalışmalarına
devam edecektir.

Year 4 Kantara Residential – 26 May 2015

On Thursday 26th May Year 4 arrived at school with their suitcases ready and packed for their residential at Kantara. Some were nervous, but after waving goodbye to parents and setting off, excitement
soon set in. After some lunch and a quick site walk, the moment the children had all been waiting
for… Setting up their rooms! Lots of yummy food was in store and for the duration of our trip we all ate
like kings! Following this we had a tea light camp fire, ate marshmallows and sang camp songs, then
off to bed for the first night’s sleep. As expected, there was little sleep due to excitement and late
night chats!
Day 2 our art activity day began with a delicious breakfast and court time. We then took part in 6 different activities across the day, including a giant wall mural, panoramic pen sketching, water colours,
natural sculptures, frame making and yoga. After this children prepared themselves for the talent
show and disco. We were treated to a variety of talents from origami to instrument playing. After a
long and fun filed day we headed for bed and within no time all children were asleep, much to the joy
of the adults!
After a good night’s sleep we awoke and began to pack up our rooms. Shortly before our departure
we embarked on a short climb up the hill in order to try to spot Kantara castle. After a final check and
a farewell to what was our home for a few days we began our journey back to school. A thoroughly
good time was had by all and we could even hear questions of when we could go back! A big thank
you to all staff and volunteers from ESK and to Kantara Youth Centre for having us.

4. Sınıf Konaklamalı Kantara Gezisi – 26 Mayıs 2015
Yazan Samantha Dix, 4. Sınıf Öğretmeni ve Aşağı İlkokul Koordinatörü
26 Mayıs Perşembe günü 4. Sınıflar konaklamalı Kantara gezileri için okula bavulları ile hazır bir
şekilde geldiler. Bazıları ilk başta tedirgin görünse de, anne ve babalarına el sallayıp yola çıktıktan
kısa bir süre sonra tatlı bir heyecan duymaya başladılar. Öğle yemeği ve hızlı bir yerleşke turundan
sonra sıra tüm çocukların beklediği an gelmişti… Odalarına yerleşme zamanı! Tesiste hazırlanan
lezzetli yiyecekler nedeniyle gezimiz boyunca krallar gibi ağırlandık! İlerleyen saatlerde küçük mumlar
kullanarak kamp ateşimizi oluşturduk, marshmallow yedik ve kamp şarkıları söyleyip ilk gece uykusu
için yataklarımıza dağıldık. Beklendiği üzere geç vakte kadar devam eden sohbetler ve heyecan
dolayısıyla az uyuduk! 2. güne lezzetli bir kahvaltı, saha etkinlikleri ve resim aktiviteleri ile başladık.
Daha sonra gün boyunca dev duvar boyama, panoramik tükenmez kalem çizimleri, sulu boya
resimler, doğal malzemelerle heykel yapımı, çerçeve yapımı ve yoga dahil 6 farklı etkinlikte yerlerimizi
aldık. Etkinliklerin ardından çocuklar yetenek yarışması ve disko için hazırlandılar. Origamiden
enstrüman çalmaya kadar birçok yetenekle keyiflendik. Güzel ve eğlenceli geçen bir günün ardından
herkes yatağına gitti ve çok zaman geçmeden tüm çocuklar uykuya daldı, yetişkinler için bunu görmek
keyifliydi!
İyi bir gece uykusundan sonra hepimiz kalkıp odalarımızı toplamaya başladık. Tesisten ayrılmadan
kısa bir süre önce Kantara Kalesini görmek üzere kısa bir tepe tırmanışı gerçekleştirdik. Okula doğru
yola çıkmadan önce birkaç günlüğüne evimiz olan bu yeri bir kez daha kontrol edip vedalaştık .
Gezimizin başından sonuna kadar, herkes çok güzel vakit geçirdi, hatta ne zaman geri dönebiliriz gibi
sorularla karşılaştık! Tüm ESK personeline, gönüllü velilerimize ve bizleri misafir ettikleri için Kantara
Gençlik Kampına çok teşekkür ederiz.

12. Sınıf Öğrencileri Radyo Programına Konuk oldu – 5 Mart 2015

Radyo Güven’de “Öğrenci Gençlik” adlı programa, okulumuz
adına 12. Sınıf öğrencilerimizden; Berkay Benli, Can Günalp,
Sevgi Oskar, Dimay Kağcan ve Türkçe öğretmenleri Ms Damar, 5 Mart 2015, Perşembe günü konuk olmuşlardır.
Programa katılan öğretmen ve öğrencilerimiz, okulumuzu ve
yaşadıkları yeri dinleyicilere tanıtmanın yanı sıra, öğrenci
gençliğinin sosyal, kültürel ve sportif faaliyetleri hakkında da
bilgiler vermişlerdir.
Programda, toplumsal hizmet çalışmalarına katkıda bulunulması ve yaşanılan çevreye karşı duyarlı
olunmasına dikkat çeken öğrencilerimiz, gelecek ile ilgili hayallerini de dinleyicilerle paylaşmışlardır.
Year 12 Students Visit the Radio Programme ‘Youth Student’ – 5 March
2015

On Thursday 5th March 2015, Year 12 students Berkay
Benli, Can Günalp, Sevgi Oskar and Dimay Kağcan,
accompanied by their Turkish teacher Ms Damar, paid a
visit to Radio Güven as guests to the programme
‘Student Youth’.
The students and their teacher talked about the school,
as well as inform listeners about the social, cultural and
sporting activities which take place.
During the programme, students drew attention to the
importance of supporting social responsibility projects
and being environmentally conscious; they ended the
programme by sharing their dreams about future with
the listeners.

Radyo Güven Maceramız…
Radyoya gitmek, 12. Snıf öğrencisi olarak bugüne kadar yaşadığım en büyük ve heyecan verici deneyimlerden birisi oldu. Hayatımda ilk defa böyle bir deneyim elde ettim ve radyoculuk hakkında
bilmediğim birçok şeyi orada elde ettim.
Radyo binasına girdiğimiz anda bizi güleryüzlü ve sıcak bir ilgi ile program yapımcısı ve aynı zamanda
sunucusu olan Gülçin Hanım karşıladı. Öğretmenimiz ve arkadaşlarımla birlikte üst kattaki kafeteryaya çıktık. İlk önce bizlere çay, meyve suyu ve kuru pasta ikramında bulundular. Bu sırada o günkü
planımızı oluşturduk. Gülçin Hanım, bizlere heyecanlı olmamamızı, bunun bir CD`ye kaydedilip daha
sonra yayınlanacağını söyledi. Bunun üzerine heyecanımız bir nebze olsun azalsa da hala daha her
birimizde tatlı bir heyecan vardı. Biraz daha sohbet ettikten sonra radyo programlarının yapıldığı odaya
gidip programımızı yaptık. İlk başta cok heyecanlansam da çok çok güzel bir program
gerçekleştirdiğimizi düşünüyorum.
Bize bu olanağı sağlayan Türkçe Öğretmenimiz Ms. Damar’a, ESK yöneticilerimize ve biz çok iyi bir
şekilde ağırlayan Radyo Güven’e buradan çok teşekkür ediyorum. (12. Sınıf A-Level - Can GÜNALP)
Radyo Güven’in programına katılmak üzere sabahleyin üç arkadaşım ve Sevgili Türkçe Öğretmenimiz
Ms Damar ile birlikte yola çıktık. Radyoya giderken Can arkadaşımız dışında hiçbirimiz heyecanlı
değildik ya da bana öyle gelmişti. Sadece sabah erken uyanmanın ve uzun Lefkoşa yolunun katkısıyla
biraz sersemlemiş gibiydik. Yolda, hocamızla sohbet ettik ve hoşça zaman geçirdik. Bende heyecan
oraya girdiğimde de henüz başlamamıştı. Yukarıya çıktık ve radyo yapımcısı Gülçin Hanımla uzun bir
sohbet sonrası heyecan dolu anları yaşayacağımız radyo kayıt odasına geçtik. Orada Gülçin Hanımın
bizi rahatlatmaya çalışmasını dinlerken bende tam tersi bir durum oluştu ve heyecan başladı. Üstelik
de heyecanım her geçen dakika ile birlikte hızla artıyordu. Ve nihayet program başladı. Hiç ara vermeden önceki ilk süreç, benim açımdan çok stresli geçti. Daha sonra müzik için bir ara verildi. Ikinci
etapta ise sanki tüm stresimi atmıştım ve az önce heyecanlanan ben değilmişim gibi hatta yıllardır bu
işi yapıyormuşçasına konuşmaya başladım. Çok eğlendim. Bu program okul anılarım içerisinde hiç
unutamayacağım bir anı ve tecrübe olarak kalacaktır. (12. Sınıf A-Level - Sevgi OSKAR)
5 Mart’ta yayınlanacak olan Okullar ve Gençlik Programına katılmak üzere, programın kayıt altına
alınacağı ve yayınlanacağı Radyo Güven’e gittik.
Radyo binasına girdiğimizde, hepimiz çok heyeceanlıydık. Orada bizi güleryüzü ile, sonradan
programın yapımcısı olduğunu öğrendiğimiz, Gülçin Hanım karşıladı. Gülçin Hanım, bu radyonun
kuruluşundan itibaren burada görev yaptığını ve radyoculuğu çok sevdiğini, insanın ne olursa olsun
sevdiği mesleği yapması gerektiğini ve bunu yaparsa hem mutlu olacağını hem de başarılı olacağını
anlattı.
Yayına girdikten sonra ilk olarak Türkçe Öğretmenimizle konuşmaya başlandı. Öğretmenimiz,
okulumuz hakkında kısa bir bilgi verdikten sonra, bizlere hem okulda yaptığımız çalışmalar hem de
okul dışında yaptıklarımız hakkında sorular yöneltildi. İlk başlarda oldukça yüksek olan heyecanımız
yerini sakinliğe ve mutluluğa dönüştü. Oldukça neşeli ve güzel bir program gerçekleştirdik. (12. Sınıf –

Radyo Güven’in her hafta farklı okullardan olmak üzere bir grup öğrenci ve bir öğretmen ile
gerçekleştirdiği bir radyo programı var. Geçen haftaki konuk okul ise okulumuz, ESK’ydı.
Sabahleyin Girne’den yola çıkıp Lefkoşa’daki Radyo Güven’e vardığımızda, orada bizi bu programı
gerçekleştirecek olan Gülçin Hanım kapıda karşıladı. Güleryüzü ve pozitif enerjisi ile bizlerin o müthiş
heyecanımızı dindirmeye çalıştı.
Kayda girmeden önce biraz sohbet ettik. Böylelikle program başlamadan önce biraz olsun
rahatlamıştık. Kayıt süresi boyunca gerek aralarda gerekse de yayın devam ederken çok hoş vakit
geçirdik. Bu programda yer almak benim için unutulmayacak bir deneyim oldu. Bana bu olanağı

Business Trip to Mardo – 28th April 2015

Year 10 IGCSE Business Studies students and Year 12 A Level/IB students visited the Mardo factory
in Nicosia on 28th April 2015. Their first destination was the Mardo café in the campus of Cyprus International University. The students looked at the décor & the products that the café sold.
Before the trip, students were given a Marketing project relating to Mardo, during the trip the students presented their project findings to Orhan Ağıt, the owner of Mardo. Mr. Ağıt was pleased with
all presentations and found it difficult to choose winning teams. In second place was Team Unicorn;
Naz Fincancıoğlu, Tolga Koray and Kerem Dumanoğlu. In first place was Team Chico; Bensu Erbekir,
Defne Kansu and Gülten Dana.
Students then were given the opportunity to try the new French baguette (a new addition to the Mardo
menu), which was delicious.
It was then on to the Mardo factory to be given a tour, see the production methods used and the highlight of the tour - to make some ice-cream. “We helped make Oreo flavour ice-cream, it is a labour intensive process and it is evident that the workers enjoy their job – when we left, they were going to
experiment on inventing a new secret flavour!” (Naz Fincancıoğlu, Year 10 student.)
Ömer Yusuf, Year 10 student commented that, “It was such an exciting trip, I have learnt why
Mardo’s ice-cream is so creamy and delicious - it uses fresh milk which is sourced from farms around
Cyprus and high quality ingredients. ”
The students learnt about the history of Mardo and their future expansion plans, including new exciting products that they intend to launch into their stores such as donuts, croissants & frozen ice-cream
sandwiches.
Finally, students toured the first established Mardo in Cyprus – they were shown the new vintage
decor and got to try some new flavours. Mr Ağıt presented all students with certificates for making icecream. Mrs Suman, IGCSE Business Studies teacher explained that the benefit of going on
educational trips is that it brings the theory alive- learning about production & promotional methods
through real life business is informative, motivational and fun!

Mardo’ya İşletme Gezisi – 28 Nisan 2015

10. Sınıf IGCSE İşletme Bölümü öğrencileri ve 12. Sınıf ALevel/IB öğrencileri 28 Nisan 2015 tarihinde
Mardo fabrikalarına bir ziyaret düzenlediler. İlk durakları Kıbrıs Üniversitesi Kampusündeki Mardo
Cafe oldu. Öğrenciler bu kafenin dekorasyonuna ve sattığı ürünlere göz gezdirdiler.
Geziden önce öğrencilere Mardo ile ilgili bir pazarlama projesi verilmişti ve bu gezide öğrenciler
projelerinde bulduklarını Mardo’nun sahibi Orhan Ağıt’a sundular. Sayın Ağıt tüm sunumlardan
fazlasıyla memnun oldu ki kazanan takımı seçmekte epeyce zorlandı. Naz Fincancıoğlu, Tolga Koray
ve Kerem Dumanoğlu’ndan oluşan Unicorn Takımı ikinci geldi. Chico Takımı ise, Bensu Erbekir, Defne
Kansu ve Gülten Dana ile birinci oldu.
Öğrenciler daha sonra Baget Ekmeği (Mardo menüsüne yeni eklendi) deneme fırsatı buldular, çok
lezzetliydi.
Ürünleri ve kullanılan yöntemleri görmek üzere sıra turun en can alıcı noktası- dondurma yapma ve
Mardo fabrika turundaydı. “ Oreolu dondurma yapımına yardım ettik, bu işlem iş gücü yoğunluklu bir
işti ve açıkcası çalışanlar bu işten keyif alıyordu – biz oradan ayrılırken, içeriği sır olan yeni bir aroma
icad etmek için deneyler yapıyorlardı! (10. Sınıf öğrencisi Naz Fincancıoğlu)
10. Sınıf öğrencilerinden Ömer Yusuf “ Çok heyecen verici bir geziydi Mardo dondurmanın neden bu
kadar lezzetli ve kıvamlı olduğunu öğrendim – Kıbrıs’taki çiftliklerden gelen taze ve besin değeri
yüksek süt kullanıyorlar” diye ekledi.
Öğrenciler Mardo’nun tarihi ve gelecekte şubelerinde yer alacak donat, krosan ve donmuş sandiviç
dondurma gibi heyecan verici ürünler ile nasıl gelişmeyi planladıklarını öğrendi.
Son olarak öğrencilere Kıbrıs’ta ilk kurulan Mardo dolaştırılıp yeni rekolte dekorasyonu gösterildi ve
bazı yeni aromalar tanıtıldı. Sayın Ağıt tüm öğrencilere dondurma yaptıkları için sertifikalarını takdim
etti. IGCSE İşletme Dersi öğretmeni Sayın Suman eğitim gezilerinin faydası, teoriyi gerçekte görüp,
ürünler ve tanıtım yöntemlerine gerçek bir işletmede tanık olmanın bilgi verici, motive edici ve
eğlenceli olduğunu açıkladı!

World Maths Day – 13 March 2015

This year, World Maths Day had a focus on vocabulary, to
help children make links better within lessons. The children
all had to make a poster where there was a Maths word from
their year group’s curriculum and use a picture or diagram to
explain it. The aim was to bring the Maths vocabulary to life
so the words had more meaning. The posters were entered
into a competition where there was one winner chosen by the
children in each year group. There were many imaginative entries! Alongside the poster competition was a rotation of activities for two hours in each year group with an emphasis on
key vocabulary.
Dünya Matematik Günü – 13 Mart 2015

Bu yıl düzenlenen Dünya Matematik Günü odağımız, çocuklara de derslerinde daha iyi bağlantılar kurabilmelerine yardımcı olması açısından matematiksel kavramlar olmuştur. Çocuklar kendi matematik
müfredatları içerisinde bulunan bir matematiksel sözcük ile ilgili birer poster hazırlayıp, bu sözcüğü
resim ya da şemalarla açıkladılar. Amaç Matematiksel kavramlara yaşam vererek onları çocuklar için
daha anlamlı kılmaktı. Posterler daha sonra yapılan yarışmada değerlendirilip her yaş grubunun birincileri belirlendi. Çok yaratıcı çalışmalar vardı! Poster yarışmasının yanısıra her yaş grubu kendi içerisinde bu matematiksel kavram ve sözcüklere vurgu yapan iki saatlik bir aktivite rotasyonu
gerçekleştirdi.

World Mathematics Day and Pi Day celebrations
have become tradition in ESK. To celebrate World
Mathematics Day various activities took place in all
mathematics classes including the building of incredibly accurate trundle wheels and proving mathematical formulae using oranges!
For Pi Day, activities took place with contributions
of the Y9S students, Ms Gökyay, Ms Barutçuzade
and Ms Ahmet. There were competitions for the
best Pi Day poster and for memorising the value of
Pi to the most decimal places. The winner of the Pi Day poster competition was Berk Yıldırım, the runner-up was Selinay Hürses and third place was taken by Leah Swanson.
The memorising pi digits winner was Jacob Swanson, with Esra Ali in second place and Cansu Kutay
coming third.
There were also sales of pi-shaped cakes and cookies which were brought by our teachers and students. The sale took place all day long during the activities and the money we raised from was donated to the immigrants in Nicosia.
We are so thankful to all the students, teachers and their parents for all the support.

Dünya Matematik Günü ve Pi Günü kutlamaları artık ESK’da bir gelenek haline geldi. Dünya
Matematik Gününü kutlamak için muazzam kesinlikte dönen tekerleklerin yapılması ve matematik
formüllerinin kanıtlanması için portakalların da kullanıldığı çeşitli etkinlikler tüm Matematik
sınıflarında yer aldı.
Pi Günü için yapılan etkinlikler 9S öğrencileri, Ms Gökyay, Ms Bartuçuzade ve Ms Ahmet’in katkıları ile
gerçekleşti. En iyi Pi Günü Poster yarışması düzenlendi ve Pi değeri ondalık sayı olarak ezberlendi. Pi
Günü poster yarışmasının kazananı Berk Yıldırım olurken ikinci sırada Selinay Hürses, üçüncü
sıradaysa Leah Swanson yerlerini aldı.

16 Nisan Perşembe günü 1. Sınıf öğrencilerimiz eğitici ve aynı zamanda bir o kadar da eğlenceli bir
gün geçirdi. Öğrencilerimiz 23 Nisan ve tutumluluk temalarının işlendiği bir dizi etkinlik gerçekleştirdi.
Müzik eşliğinde büyük bir dikkatle dinledikleri masalı konuğumuz Aydın Bulut eşliğinde dramatize
ederek büyük keyif aldılar. Bunları yaparken dinleme, dikkat toplama ve drama yeteneklerini ön plana çıkardılar. Etkinlik sonunda oynadıkları küçük bir oyunla da birlikte hareket edebilme ve grup
ruhunu yakaladılar.

Fun Children’s Day Activity for Year 1 – 16 April 2015

On Thursday, 16th April, our Year 1 students had a fun packed, educational day. Students took part in
a series of Children’s Day and sparingness themed activities, ranging from drama to finger painting.
They really enjoyed listening to the story which was dramatised by our guest Aydın Bulut. During these
activities, children developed their listening, concentration and drama skills. The day ended with children playing a game which required them to move together and develop team spirit.

part of their Geography learning they took their aliens on a tour of the school to help them describe

etmelerine yardımcı olması için uzaylılarını okul içerisinde bir geziye çıkardılar. Uzaylılara
gerçekleştirdikleri rehberli geziyi takiben çocuklar ESK ve ana özellikleri ile ilgili çok ilginç
bilgilendirme broşürleri hazırladılar.

The children in Nursery have recently started exploring the range of instruments in the Primary Music
Room. We are looking at creating our own fast and slow rhythms and trying to recall and repeat familiar beats. The children are enjoying the range of instruments on offer, and are learning to take turns
and work together to use them correctly. We are looking forward to many more Music Room lessons
to further our understanding of instruments and rhythm.

Nursery (3 Yaş Grubu) çocuklarımız İlkokul Müzik Odası’nda bulunan çeşitli enstrümanları keşfetmeye
başladılar. Kendi hızlı ve yavaş ritimlerimizi yaratmaya ve duyduğumuz tanıdık vuruşları aklımızda
tutup yeniden tekrarlamaya çalıştık. Çocuklar sunulan geniş yelpazedeki enstrümanları denemekten
büyük bir keyif alırken, sırayla kullanmak ve doğru kullanım için birlikte çalışmak gibi becerilerini
geliştirme olanağı buldular. Enstrümanlarla ilgili bilgimizi ve ritim anlayışımızı daha da genişletmek
için bu gibi Müzik Odası derslerimizin tekrarını iple çekmekteyiz.

Year 4 Mountain Walk – 23 March 2015

Year 4 completed a mountain walk in the Bellapais area as part of our mighty mountain topic.
Children observed a variety of geographical features such as: rock formations, crevasses, climate, fire
breaks and wildlife. We also noticed lots of different types of human pollution. We were helped by
some secondary students who are completing their International Duke of Edinburgh award. They were
fantastic and answered endless questions. It was a useful opportunity to impart some of their training
and knowledge of their course to an enthusiastic crowd. A lovely time was had and all slept incredibly
well that night!
4. Sınıfların Dağ Yürüyüşü – 23 Mart 2015

4. Sınıflar olarak ‘Muhteşem Dağlar’ konulu tema dersimiz kapsamında Bellapais bölgesinde bir dağ
yürüyüşü gerçekleştirdik. Çocuklar; kaya oluşumları, yarıklar, iklim, orman yangınlarının yayılmasını
önlemek amacıyla yaratılan şeritler ve doğal yaşam gibi çok çeşitli coğrafik özellikleri incelediler.
Ayrıca yürüyüşümüz sırasında insanlar tarafından yapılmış olan çok farklı çevre kirliliği türlerine de
rastladık. Bizlere bu gezimiz sırasında Duke of Edinburgh ödülüne yönelik çalışmalarını tamamlayan
bazı lise bölümü öğrenciler de yardımcı oldu. Tümü de harikaydılar ve kendilerine yöneltilen sayısız
soruya yanıt verdiler. Bu, lise öğrencilerimize, eğitimlerinin bir bölümünü ve öğrendiklerini meraklı bir
kitle ile paylaşmak için oldukça yararlı bir fırsat oldu. Çok iyi vakit geçirdiğimiz bu gezi sonrasında
gece, herkesin deliksiz uyuduğuna eminiz!

Our Y4 Mighty Mountain Walk – 23 March 2015

As part of our Topic Mighty Mountains, today we went on our mountain walk.
We took the school buses up the hill, to the bottom of the mountain. We got off the buses and got
into our small walking groups.
We started walking up the mountain, along the way we came across many different things. We saw
lots of wildlife such as Butterflies, Bees, Ladybirds, Birds, Worms and Flowers.
We saw many types of rock such as Sandstone and Granite, there were a variety of colours within the
rocks.
We came across a number of types of human pollution along the way; bottles, paper, plastic bags,
cars and men cutting down trees.
We reached the top and sat down to have our delicious picnic from school. We ate our sandwiches
and fruit, any leftover food we shared with the birds and other wildlife.
We then began our descent back down the mountain where we met up with the buses.
We really enjoyed our day and had a lovely time on our mountain walk.

programa konuk oldu.
Programda öğrenciler, okullarını tanıtmanın yanı sıra, okulda gerçekleştirilen sosyal ve kültürel faaliyetlerini de dinleyicilerle paylaştı.
23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı hakkında bildiklerini ve bayrama dair duygularını
aktaran öğrenciler, Atatürk’ü de andı. Teknolojinin hayatımıza etkilerini de anlatan öğrenciler, kitap
okumanın önemine dikkat çekti. Temiz ve doğal bir dünyada yaşamak isteklerini dile getiren The English School Of Kyrenia öğrencileri, gelecek hayallerini de dinleyicilerle paylaştı.
Year 6 Students Visit to Radio Güven – 18 April 2015

ESK Year 6 students Nehir Tüylüoğlu, Doğa Soydemir, Derin Akay and Doğa Karaatmaca were guests
to the radio programme ‘School Time’ on Saturday, 18th April 2015.
During the radio programme students talked about their school and shared some of the school’s social and cultural activities with the listeners.
Students while commemorating Ataturk, talked about Children’s Day and their feelings about the celebrations. They also commented on the effects of technology on our lives and drew attention to the
importance of reading books.
ESK students mentioned that they wanted to live in a clean and natural world and ended the programme by expressing their dreams about the future.

IB Art Exhibition – 2 April 2015

Over the last two years our IB students have been working very
hard to complete their Visual Arts course. As part of this course
the students were required to showcase their artwork in an exhibition. It is not required for this exhibition to be viewed by the
public however we felt it would be a wasted opportunity if people
were not given the chance to view this fantastic work.
Therefore some of the IB students arranged a private viewing of
the exhibition on Thursday 2nd April 2015 at 18:30 to 20:00.
The exhibition was held on the first floor of the main ESK building.

bütün bu çalışmaların bir kısmını sergileyeceklerdir.
Başlangıçta sergi, halka açık olarak düşünülmemişti ancak bu derece harika çalışmaları diğer insanların beğenisine sunmamanın gerçekten yazık olacağını düşündük.
Bunun sonucunda IB öğrencilerimiz, 2 Nisan Perşembe akşamı saat 18.30-20.00 arasında halka açık
bir sergi düzenlediler. Sergi, ESK ana binanın birinci katında gerçekleşecekti.

Chillin’ With Jazz! - 18 June 2015

After a focused year of revising for exams and weeks of rehearsing
for their own end of year performance it was time for year 6 pupils
to be treated to a surprise intimate musical performance.
At ESK we have many talented parents and it was lovely to be approached by a parent who was once a professional Jazz Musician.
The children stared in awe as they were introduced to the brass
instrument, the trombone and were taught about its technical features. Then the music began to play, the highlight for the children
being a medley of short jazz pieces; a style of music many were
not familiar with.
Thank you Mr Horada for sharing your passion for music with the
children, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Using the words of Louis
Armstrong; ‘Hot can be cool, and cool can be hot, and each can be
both. But hot or cool, man, jazz is jazz.’

Year 4 Film Gala - 25 June 2015

In Year 4 our topic this term was ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ We have studied a range of different genres
of film and had an insight into the world of films. This led to the children creating their own short, silent film, focussing on using expression like Charlie Chaplin and more recently Mr Bean. Children
were responsible for writing, filming, acting and recording their own films, not an easy job! There were
tears, sweat and many disagreements but in the end we were left with 13 wonderful films!
On the evening of Thursday 25th June Year 4 walked the red carpet to attend the premiere of their
films at ESK’s first ever film gala. Everyone glammed up for the occasion and once the obligatory red
carpet pictures were taken by the paparazzi and they were settled with their popcorn and drinks the
films began to show. Initially not a sound could be heard as the children and parents waited in anticipation for the showing of their film. Copious amount of applause and laughter soon filled the air and
it became very clear that we have many talented actors, actresses, directors and producers in the
year group! Get your autographs now before they begin their journey to superstardom!
Well done to the children in Year 4 for their hard work and determination in the filming process.

4. Sınıf Film Galası - 25 Haziran 2015

4. Sınıflarla bu dönem Tema dersi konumuz ‘Işık, Kamera, Hareket!’ti. Birçok farklı film türü üzerine
araştırmalar yaptık ve dünya filmlerini de tanıma şansımız oldu. Bu da çocukları ifade güçlerini
kullanarak kendi sessiz kısa filmlerini oluşturmaları için heveslendirdi, tıpkı Charlie Chaplin ve Mr
Bean gibi. Çocuklar kendi filmlerini kaleme alma, çekme, sahnelerinde oynama ve kaydetmekten

25 Haziran Perşembe günü 4. Sınıflar öğrencileri ESK’nın ilk film galasına katılmak üzere kırmızı
halıda yürüdüler. Herkes bu etkinlik için çok şık giyinmişti ve paparazziler tarafından çekilen zorunlu
fotoğraflardan sonra patlamış mısır ve içecekleri ile birlikte filmin başlaması için hazır oldular.
Başlangıçta velileriyle birlikte kendi filmlerinin gösterilmesini bekleyen çocuklardan çıt duyulmadı.
İlerleyen dakikalarda ortam alkış ve kahkaha ile dolup taştı ve ortada açıkca görülen bir şey vardı ki,
4. Sınıflar arasında çok yetenekli aktör, aktris, yönetmen ve yapımcı bulunuyor! Onlar ünlü birer yıldız
olmadan imzalarını almayı unutmayın!

A Day of Musical Performances - 16 June 2015

After many weeks and months of attending lessons and clubs it would be criminal not to showcase
the musical talents of our ESK Primary pupils!
Many pupils from years 1 to 6 had the opportunity to perform to intimate audiences, consisting of
family and friends. There were a total of six performances throughout the day including: a guitar, a
recorder and two piano performances. Singing from the Primary school choir began the concert listing, with modern dancing from the dance club bringing the musical marathon day to a close.
For many of the children, performing in front of an audience was a first and they all did tremendously
well. Congratulations to all the performers, I do hope they will return in September to continue to develop their musical talents further.
May I also thank all the tutors for their hard work with their pupils; we are lucky to have such a motivational musical team working with our Primary pupils at ESK.

Year 1Transport WOW Day – 18 June 2015

We had fun during our transport and journey wow day. We all
dressed up as drivers of different types of transport for example
some of us dressed up as doctors, pirates, pilots and paramedics. In
Literacy we did some writing linked to transport stories. In maths we
used Beebots to learn about directional language. We made the
Beebots go on a journey. In the afternoon we went on a bear hunt
journey around the school. It was fun we had a map to help us with
clues. We had a challenge to carry out at each activity. We found the
bear in his tent the bear was so happy he left us biscuits as a treat!

Ulaşım ve seyahat günümüzde çok iyi vakit geçirdik.
Hepimiz de farklı taşıt araçlarının şoförleri gibi
giyindik; örneğin, doktorlar, korsanlar, pilotlar ve
sağlık görevlileri. İngilizce dersimizde konu ile bağlantılı taşıt hikayeleri yazdık. Matematik dersimizde
de yönlendirme dilini öğrenmek için Beebots kullandık. Öğleden sonra ise okulun etrafında ayı avına
çıktık. İp uçları ile bize yardımcı olabilecek bir haritamız vardı; çok eğlenceliydi. Her etkinliği sürdüren
aktiviteler yaptık. Ayımızı çadırında bizi beklerken bulduk, çok mutluydu ve bizlere hediye olarak
bisküvi bırakmıştı!

Telsim – Foder Photography Competition - 10 June 2015

Two of our students, Aylin Akyildiz and Selinay Hurses in Y8, have won a
three-week photography course in a competition organised by FODER
(Cyprus Turkish Photography Association) and TELSIM. Their photos
were considered worthy to be exhibited during the award ceremony
which took place on Wednesday, 10th June 2015.
TELSIM and FODER organised this photography competition for children
to promote photography and culture on the island. The theme of the
competition was “Life in Cyprus through the Perspective of Children”.
“I fell in love with taking photographs, with wandering around finding
things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The photograph is a
document of that performance. When life gets blurry, adjust your focus!
I began to realize that the camera sees the world differently than the
human eye and that sometimes those differences can make a photograph more powerful than what
you actually observed. The photograph is completely abstracted from life, yet it looks like life. That is
what has always excited me about photography. When I entered to this competition I was very excited
and nervous at the same time. I thought that I would never win but I tried to stay positive. And at the
end I received a gift that I would never forget in my life which I am very grateful for! I love

Year 2 Florence Nightingale Day – 3 April 2015

Children and staff in Year 2 celebrated the life and times of Florence Nightingale on their hospital day.
The day was to reenact the life and conditions of soldiers and nurses during the Crimean war.
Year 2 children have been learning how Florence nightingale and her team of nurses improved the
quality and care for patients at Scutari Hospital.
The children came dressed in fantastic costumes and enjoyed role playing a variety of scenarios.
Supported by the CESV (Civil Emergency Service Volunteers) the children were trained in basic first
aid and safety.
A great day was had by every one!
2. Sınıfların Florence Nightingale Günü– 3 Nisan 2015

2. Sınıf öğrenci ve öğretmenleri hastane gününde Florence Nightingale’in hayatını ve dönemlerini
kutladı. Bu günde Kırım Savaşı sırasında askerlerin ve hemşirelerin içinde bulundukları şartları ve
hayatlarını canlandırdılar.
2. Sınıftaki öğrencilerimiz Florence Nightingale ve onun ekibindeki hemşirelerin Scutari Hastanesi’nde
hastaları için kalite ve bakımı nasıl geliştirdiklerini öğrendiler.
Çocuklar okula harika kostümler giyerek geldiler ve çeşitli senaryolarda aldıkları rollerin keyfini
çıkardılar.
Ayrıca CESV (Sivil Acil Durum Hizmet Gönüllüleri) sağlık çalışanlarının katkılarıyla çocuklar temel
ilkyardım ve güvenlik konusunda eğitim aldılar.

World Book Day: Y7 Book Characters – 6 March 2015

In order to celebrate reading on World Book Day,
Year 7 students designed masks of their favourite
book character in Art and participated in an outdoor activity during English class. The masked
students formed two large circles in the school’s
amphitheatre, one of which turned clockwise to
face a different book character each time to introduce their character and talk about the book. In
addition to Year 7 classes, Year 8 and 9 enjoyed
taking part in a World Book Day Quiz and designing creative book covers and descriptions of their
favourite books.
Dünya Kitap Günü: 7. Sınıf Kitap Kahramanları – 6 Mart 2015

Dünya Kitap Günü’nde okuryazarlığı kutlamak amacıyla 7. Sınıf öğrencileri Resim derslerinde en

gerçekleştirdikleri bir etkinliğe katıldılar. Maskelerini takan öğrenciler okulun amfitiyatrosunda iki
tane daire oluşturdular, içte bulunan dairenin saat yönünde gerçekleştirdiği dönüş ile her seferinde iki
farklı kitap kahramanı karşılaşıp hem kendi karakterleri hem de yer aldıkları kitaplar ile ilgili bilgi
paylaştılar. /. Sınıflara ek olarak, 8. Ve 9. Sınıf öğrencileri de katıldıkları Dünya Kitap Günü Bilgi

kalıcı bir öğrenme gerçekleştiriyorlar hem de eğleniyorlar.
Öğrencilerimiz, derslerini değişik tekniklerle işlerken yaratıcılıklarını da
sergileyerek oldukça güzel ve verimli çalışmalar sergiliyorlar.
Araştırmalar yaparak araştırma tekniklerini, oynayacakları metinleri
yazarak yazılı anlatımlarını ve bunları sözlü olarak sergileyerek de sözlü
anlatımlarını geliştirme yolunda hızlı adımlarla ilerliyorlar.
Dramatization Technique in Turkish Lessons - 18 March 2015
Year 7 Students are using Dramatization Technique in their Turkish lessons. Students have been developing life-long learning skills and having fun under the theme of ‘living and learning’.
While the students experienced different techniques during their lessons, they also had the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity while producing beautiful work.
They are rapidly improving their research skills through the investigations they are conducting, their
writing skills with the play texts they are writing and also their verbal expression skills with their performances.

ESK ‘Let’s investigate’ Science Day – 16 June 2015

Tuesday 16th June saw Science taking centre stage at ESK yet again. Children came to school
dressed as scientists prepared to investigate in our chemistry, biology and physics lab themed classrooms for the day. Parents were invited to drop in to experience the science taking place and were
thoroughly impressed with the children’s knowledge and natural inquisitiveness and even learnt a
thing or two themselves! We even had a special visitor from the British High Commission who enjoyed
observing the many experiments taking place. Children also had the opportunity to explore the secondary science labs witnessing a range of scientific equipment in action in a real lab setting. A fantastic time was had by all!

ESK ‘Haydi Araştıralım’ Fen Günü – 16 Haziran 2015

16 Haziran Salı günü Fen Bilgisi yine ESK’nın odak noktasıydı. Çocuklar günde okula birer bilim insanı
gibi giyinip Kimya, Biyoloji ve Fizik laboratuvarı temalı sınıflarımıza araştırma yapmak üzere geldiler.
Anne-babaların de davet edildiği günde, velilerimiz çocuklarının bilgileri ve doğal araştırmacılık
becerileri karşısında fazlasıyla etkilendiler, hatta kendileri de bir iki şey öğrendiler! Dahası İngiliz
Yüksek Komisyonundan gelen özel misafirimiz de gerçekleşen pek çok deneyi izleme olanağı buldu.
Çocuklar Ortaokul Fen labaratuvarına gidip araştırma yapma, çeşitli bilimsel gereçlerine gerçek
labaratuvar ortamında tanık olma fırsatı elde ettiler. Herkes için harika bir gün oldu!

“North Side Story” Performed by Y6

The performances or ‘North Side Story’ took their audiences on a
musical journey to Girne Town. Here two very different groups of children, the Balinalar and the Yıldızlar both were striving for a place to
live, to play and to be free. With time they overcame their differences
and were united, eventually becoming one community!
The original script and songs from ‘West Side Story’ were the inspiration for this musical adaptation. The music of Leonard Bernstein
could never be improved upon but the script and lyrics could be
changed to bring the storyline closer to home; from America to Kıbrıs
and specifically the town of Girne.
The ESK amphitheatre was the venue chosen to present the performances and saw a dramatic transformation. The Girne town streets
and sewing shop were two engaging scene sets, drawing the audience deep in to the storyline.
Along with great sets, costumes and choreography came the songs
and their meaningful lyrics; these unfolded the story of these children, their trials, their hopes and desires.
After a standing ovation and unending applause the pupils gave the audiences
what they wanted an encore.
Thank you to everyone that made this production possible and made my vision a
reality. After many hours of sweat from; singing, dancing, sawing, painting and
‘heavy lifting’ etc, the show was a huge success. The children were outstanding
and really did us proud.
‘I can honestly say that was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen! I was
blown away by the singing, dancing, staging…. It was amazing!’
‘Everyone who made the show such a resounding success deserves a hearty
round of applause….The way the text alterations had taken place to make it a
true ‘North Side Story’ touched the heart, and a lot of skill was on show from every student….This inclusivity is hard to achieve and to direct….you all did a wonderful job! The set and
the setting were excellent as well, great work!’

Nursery Children’s Trip to the Wild Duck –12 May 2015

Nursery enjoyed an educational trip to ‘The Wild Duck’ in Lapta. Many of the parents came along and
joined in with the fun and activities which were planned to extend the children’s ‘in class learning’.
The children experimented with floating and sinking toys in the splash pool as well as receiving some
early swimming lessons from Mr Morris to build up their confidence in water.
They created some fabulous observational drawings of chickens, ducks and turkeys, linking with our
life cycle topic and helping the children to understand what will be coming out of the eggs currently
incubating in Nursery.
They had fun challenging their physical abilities on the bouncy castle and the large climbing equipment.
Finally, the children talked about the things they had seen and done while enjoying a picnic in the
shade.
It was a very enjoyable experience for all and a lovely way for children, teachers and parents to share
some time together.

Nursery (3 Yaş) Çocuklarının Wild Duck Gezisi- 12 Mayıs 2015

Nursery bölümü Lapta’da faaliyet gösteren ‘The Wild Duck’ a yapmış olduğu eğitim gezisinden büyük
bir keyif aldı. Birçok velinin de katıldığı gezimizde çocuklar ‘sınıf içi eğitim ve öğrenimlerine’ ek olarak
planlanmış eğlence ve etkinliklere katıldılar.
Çocukların su içerisindeyken özgüvenlerinin artması için öğretmenimiz Mr Morris’ten aldıkları erken
yüzme derslerinin yanısıra, yüzen ve batan oyuncaklar üzerine deneyim kazandılar.
‘Yaşam Döngüleri’ isimli konumuzla bağlantılı olarak gözleme dayalı bazı harika tavuk, ördek ve hindi
çizimleri yaptılar. Bu halıhazırda Nursery bölümümüzdeki bulunan kuluçka makinesindeki
yumurtalardan ne çıkacağı ile ilgili öğrendiklerini de pekiştirmelerine yardımcı oldu.
Zıplamalı kalede ve yüksek tırmanma oyuncağında fiziksel becerilerine meydan okumaları da çocuklar
için çok eğlenceliydi.
Son olarak çocuklar gölgede gerçekleştirdikleri piknik sırasında gezide gördükleri ve yaptıkları şeyler
hakkında konuştular.
Hepimiz için çok keyifli bir deneyimdi; ayrıca öğrenciler, öğretmenler ve velilerin birlikte zaman
geçirmeleri için harika bir olanak oldu.

Nursery Fun Day – 29 & 30 June 2015

Nursery children had lots of fun on the last two days of school. On
Monday they came into school dressed up as their favourite character.
The children were also asked to bring into school their favourite toy or
teddy for their special picnic in the afternoon. Earlier that morning the
children decorated happy face biscuits for the picnic.
On Tuesday, to celebrate the beginning of the summer holiday, they
enjoyed the water play and paddling pool. It was fun for all the children as it was for the staff too.
We will all remember happy memories of Nursery E.S.K 2014-2015.
Nursery (3 Yaş) Eğlence Günü- 29 ve 30 Haziran 2015

Okulun son iki günü çocuklar çok eğlendiler. Çocuklar Pazartesi günü okula en sevdikleri karakter gibi
giyinip geldiler. Öğleden sonra gerçekleşecek özel piknikleri için en sevdikleri oyuncak veya oyuncak
ayıyı getirmeleri söylenmişti. Piknik öncesinde çocuklarımız pikniğe özel bisküvilerini mutlu yüzlerle
süslediler.
Salı günü, Yaz tatili kutlamalarımıza başladık; çocuklar su ve kendilerine hazırlanmış eğlence
havuzları içerisinde oynayarak keyifli zaman geçirdiler. Çocuklar için de öğretmenler için de oldukça
eğlenceli bir gün oldu.
Hepimiz de Nursery (3 Yaş) bölümü olarak 2014-2015’i mutlu anılar ile hatırlayacağız.

Year 2 ‘Our Town Kyrenia’ Trip – 29 April & 6 May 2015

As part of the Year 2 topic ‘Our Town Kyrenia’, we did investigation about
where our food comes from and the produce we grow locally on the Island.
In addition to this our topic looks at significant buildings in the local area.
We therefore planned to take the children to the Wednesday market and
then onto Kyrenia Castle.
At the market the children bought lots of fruit and vegetables as well as
some dairy products. The sellers spoke to our children and told them where
the food comes from and how it is grown. Some children bought plants
which could be used in food like a mint tree.
Next, we went to the Kyrenia Castle. We walked around the big castle in
small groups and found out about the history of the castle. The children particularly enjoyed entering the dungeons!
Finally, we walked along the harbour and sat down for an ice-cream before
heading back to school. The children produced some fantastic pieces of
writing about the trip and what they had learnt. We all had a great day out!
2. Sınıfların ‘Kasabamız Girne’ Gezisi – 29 Nisan ve 6 Mayıs 2015

2. Sınıf Tema dersimizin bir bölümü olan ‘Kasabamız Girne’ ile bağlantılı olarak yiyeceklerimizin
nereden geldiği ve adada yetişen ürünler üzerine bir araştırma yaptık. Dersimiz kapsamında ayrıca
bölgedeki önemli binaları da inceledik. O nedenledir ki çocuklarla Çarşamba Pazarı ve Girne Kalesi’ne
bir gezi gerçekleştirmenin uygun olacağını düşündük.
Pazarda, bazı süt ürünlerinin yanı sıra birçok sebze ve meyve satın aldılar. Satıcılar çocuklara
ürünlerin nasıl yetiştikleri ve nerden geldikleri konusunda bilgi verdiler.
Daha sonra, Girne Kalesi’ne gittik. Bu büyük kalenin etrafında küçük gruplar halinde bir yürüyüş
gerçekleştirdik. Çocuklar özellikle zindanlara girmekten büyük keyif aldılar!
Son olarak okula dönmeden önce limanda yürüdük ve oturup dondurma yedik. Çocuklar gezileri ve
öğrendikleri hakkında harika yazılar yazdılar. Hep birlikte çok güzel bir gün geçirdik!

This term Year 3 took us on a live musical adventure through the history of Blues music starting with
the African slave songs, moving onto the Boogie Woogie style and then arriving at the Rock and Roll
era.

12. Sınıf Münazaraları – 2 Mart 2015
12. Sınıf A-Level programı öğrencilerimiz Türkçe dersleri kapsamında, eğitim ve öğretim yılının başından itibaren oldukça başarılı
münazaralar gerçekleştirmektedir.
Öğrencilerimin hararetli bir mücadele içerisinde sergiledikleri münazaralar, oldukça verimli geçmiştir. Böylece gerçekleştirdiğimiz her bir
münazara ile onların bu konudaki tecrübeleri artmış ve başarı seviyeleri de yükselmiştir.
Bu münazaralarla, öğrencilerimin ders dışında başka kitapların ve
kaynakların okunup incelenmesine katkıda bulunmak, konuşma
becerilerini geliştirmek, düşünceleri arasında bağlar kurarak düşüncelerini kusursuz bir şekilde dile getirmelerini amaçlanmış olup şu an itibariyle bu amaca ulaşmış
olduğumuzu görmekten mutluluk duymaktayım.
Öğrencilerimi bu güne kadar gerçekleştirdiğimiz münazaralar boyunca gösterdikleri nazik tavırlarından
dolayı kutluyorum.
Year 12 Debates – 2 March 2015
Year 12 A-Level students have been conducting very successful debates since the beginning of the
academic year. The debates which the students presented in a passionate struggle proved very productive. Hereby, every debate helped them increase their success and experience on the subject.
These debates were aimed to give students reasons to read books different than their course books
and resources, to improve their speaking skills, to make connections amongst their thoughts and express them perfectly. I am very happy to see that we have succeeded this aim.
I would like to congratulate my students for their kind and caring attitudes during the debates.

Year 6 were treated to a wonderful talk about
Africa when they were visited by Charles Obi, a
Nigerian who’s studying in North Cyprus. His
detailed information and wonderful slide show
allowed the children to gain a real insight into
many elements of African life. He talked about
traditional dress, foods and dances. Part of the
talk focussed on the wonderful selection of
animals that are found in some parts of Africa,
many of the children expressed an interest in a
safari experience sometime in the future.
Charles was asked many questions by his audience, all of whom agreed that he’d given a
great presentation and taught them many valuable facts.

A special visitor joined the Year 6 students for
a presentation on life skills and preperation for
the transition into Secondary. Uraz Ṣentürk, a
form graduate from English School Kyrenia,
met with the students to discuss how his path
had led since graduating. He is already know
and admired by many of the students for his
basketball skills, previously one of the best
players in North Cyprus. He gave valuable
advice and tips on organisation skills, being
prepared on a daily basis and explained the
importance of following your heart when

talk prompted many questions and was very
thought provoking, giving the students a clear
message of how important it is to rise to life’s
challenges in order to become a sucessful
individual.

öğrencilerle bir araya gelerek önceki
kazanımlarının mezun olduktan sonra onu
nasıl yönlendirip yardımcı olduğunu anlattı.
Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın en iyi basketbol oyuncularından
biri olarak bazı öğrenciler onu önceden biliyor
ve hayranlık duyuyorlardı. Günlük hayatta
organizasyon becerileri üzerine değerli
tavsiyeler ve ipuçları veren Uraz önemli
kararlar verirken içlerinden gelen karara
yoğunlaşmanın öneminden bahsetti. İlham
veren konuşması birçok soru ve düşüncenin
ortaya çıkmasını sağladı ve öğrencilere başarılı
bireyler olmaları için yeri geldiğinde karşılarına
çıkan engellerle mücadele etmenin önemini
vurguladı.

ESK Secondary Drama News 2014-2015

We have had a phenomenal year in Drama in the Secondary School this
year, with talented students showcasing their skills, and curriculum drama firmly on the rise. With the arrival of a new Head of Department
change always occurs but the students have responded amazingly to the
new emphasis on academic results as well
as extra-curricular events.
In late November the Year 7 Drama students
produced their own Pantomimes, cumulating
in public performances for our Foundation
students from PY. The younger students were impeccably behaved and
clearly enjoyed the efforts the Year 7’s had gone to.
December saw three excellently attended performances of ‘Grimm Tales’
which was suitably gothic and macabre, whilst also full of high energy and
comic relief. There were so many amazing individual performances that it
is impossible to name them all, but the four Year 13 IB Theatre students –
Selin, Bato, Selin and Ecem - deserve a special mention for their hard
work and effort. Miss Claire Studdart did a fantastic job co-directing and it
was an utter joy to lead rehearsals with such a remarkable cast.

On the academic side of things, in the Autumn and Spring terms Year
11 GCSE students took part in two six-hour assessment workshops,
demonstrating maturity and creative flair throughout.
In late January some of the Secondary students performed for selected Year 4’s, another excellent demonstration of the collaborative
links that we have been building between SY and PY.
In March the Year 13 students completed an IB Showcase with a devised performance piece that toyed with light and dark, as well each
creating One-Man Shows to perform. The very first AS Level Drama
cohort in Year 12 also presented their examination monologues
which were focused and inventive.
April brought the final practical examinations for the Year 11 GCSE
Drama students and the Year 12 AS group. All of the pieces were outstanding with exceptional performances from the AS girls in particular. We are especially proud of all that these students have achieved and look forward to seeing well
deserved results in the three examination courses taught this year.
In May Ms Dorothy Feszczak and I led the auditions for
‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare, which will be
staged in November. Another dedicated cast have already been giving up many extra hours rehearsing and
developing their skills, and we look forward to performing for you in the Autumn. Next year we will also
be welcoming Mrs Oya Akin back into the department,
which is especially pleasing as it means drama won’t
be a ‘one-woman show’ anymore, and this will give us
the opportunity to expand further. Exciting times are
ahead as we continue to flourish!

Leadership workshops certified by the Chartered Management Institute
(CMI), London - 22 April 2015

ESK had the pleasure again of running a series of leadership workshops for Year 7, 8 and 12 students in April. What a fantastic 3
days! The courses are designed by education and leadership experts at TFL Education Ltd to help prepare our students for the realities of living and competing in a global workplace – to prepare
them to be tomorrow’s leaders.
According to TFL Education’s website, there is growing research
which highlights how character traits and leadership skills are directly linked to flourishing at school and in the workplace. To succeed, individuals will need to demonstrate qualities such as perseverance,
resilience,
courage,
selfesteem, honesty, humour, optimism, trust, loyalty, integrity and enterprise. Crucially, the course emphasises that these behaviours
are not inherited. They must be taught, modelled and encouraged.
Mr Eric Liddell of TFL Education led these workshops for us again and was impressed by the energy
and insight of our students. An overwhelming number of Year 7, 8 and 12 students took part in the
workshops and found them thought-provoking, enlightening and enjoyable.
For Key Stage 3 we offer a three-module course, taken over three years. Each module results in a certificate accredited by the prestigious and world-renowned Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in
London. The UK Education Secretary has awarded grants to UK schools running these courses, in
recognition of their value. This year’s Year 8s enjoyed the second module in the series and remembered an impressive amount from the workshop they had done last year. The Year 12s were challenged by a whole day of activities to prepare them for their entry into higher education and the world
of work. The course and the certification will be invaluable when these students make their university
applications next December.
We look forward to offering the next module in leadership to our students next year.

rearing chicks in an incubator in Nursery. We
are proud to say we have 5 beautiful chicks,
all different colours, healthy and chirping happily.
We also have duck eggs and turkey eggs.

Secondary School International Day

The second ESK International Day took place on Wednesday
24th June and was a superbly educational and enjoyable day
for students and teachers. Brazil, China, Ghana and Morocco were the countries assigned to the students of each
house. Several students and teachers made a laudable effort to dress in national costume for the occasion.
The tasks for the day were time-sensitive and challenging.
Within the first 2 hours, students had to research their country and produce a dazzling display board of graphics and information. This was an exceptionally demanding task as it required discussion, delegation, organisation, team-work, prioritisation, negotiation
of roles and selection and sorting of relevant information. All the displays produced on the day were
indeed dazzling, with some superb arts and crafts and much creativity o show. At break time, we had
the pleasure of sharing a superb selection of national foods brought in by teachers and students.
Food is an international language and our plates emptied fast, helping to raise a total of TL334 for
charity. The second task of the day was to research the arts of the country, with the aim of creating a
presentation and performance of the visual arts, music and dance, poetry or drama. Again, this involved research, selection, analysis of capabilities and talents within the group and the allocation of
responsibilities. Such tasks are no mean few, given that each country group was made up of students of different ages, backgrounds and personalities. The day culminated in superb performances
of music, dance and visual arts in the Great Hall. The audience was wowed by the hidden talents and
confidence of our students as they took to the stage and performed admirably after such a short research and rehearsal period. It was heartening to see our students encourage each other to take
part; and what a wonder it was to see some of our shiest, quietest students blossom on stage.
Our hope is that everyone who participated learnt a great deal about different cultures, the value and
logistics of working under strict time constraints and within large groups of varying abilities. Such
events are a valuable addition to the curriculum and, as well as being of great educational value, are
enjoyed by all participants. We look forward to the next ESK International Day.

Öykü Yarışmasında Üçüncülük – 9 Mart 2015
Yenidüzen gazetesi ve Deniz Plaza işbirliği ile düzenlenen 4. Öykü Yarışması’nda okulumuz öğrencisi
Darem Kadiroğulları 3.lük ödülünü kazanmıştır.
Bu yıl dördüncüsü düzenlenen, Kıbrıs’taki devlet ve özel okullarda öğretim gören ilkokul ve ortaokul
düzeyindeki öğrencilerinin yoğun bir ilgi göstererek katıldıkları Yenidüzen-Deniz Plaza Öykü
Yarışması’nda, 9. Sınıf öğrencimiz Darem Kadiroğulları, yarışma jürilerinin titiz değerlendirmeleri sonucunda, yazmış olduğu öykü ile 3.lük ödülünü almaya layık görülmüştür.
Öğrencimizi tebrik ediyor, başarılarının devamını diliyoruz.
Third Place in Short Story Competition – 9 March 2015
ESK student Darem Kadiroğulları was awarded 3rd place in the 4th Short Story Competition organised by Yenidüzen Newspaper and Deniz Plaza.
Primary and Secondary students from both state and private schools all over Cyprus showed great
interest in the competition and after the jury’s careful evaluation Year 9 student Darem Kadiroğulları
was awarded 3rd place.
We would like to congratulate our student and wish her continuous success.

18 Mart Çanakkale Zaferi ve Şehitleri Anma Töreni – 18 Mart 2015
Okulumuz öğrencileri, 18 Mart Çanakkale Zaferi’nin 100.
Yıldönümü ve Şehitleri Anma Günü için Karaoğlanoğlu
Şehitliği’nde düzenlenen oldukça anlamlı bir törene
katıldılar.
Tören, bir dakikalık saygı duruşu ve ardından hep birlikte
coşku ile söylenen İstiklal Marşı ile başladı. Daha sonra
törene katılanlarca, protokol sırasına göre şehitliğe
çelenkler bırakıldı. Günün anlam ve önemi ile ilgili yapılan
konuşmaların ardından, törene duygusal şiirler okunarak
devam edildi.
Her milletten verilen kayıplar ve askerler anılarak törenin
kapanışı gerçekleştirildi. Bundan sonra, törene
katılanlarca, şehitlik ziyaret edildi ve mezarlar üzerine kırmızı ve beyaz karanfiller bırakıldı. Bu arada
duygusal anlar da yaşandı.
“Tüm insanların barış içerisinde huzurla yaşayacakları bir dünya”da yaşanması dileğiyle!..
18 March Canakkale Victory and Martyrs Remembrance Ceremony – 18
March 2015
Our students participated in a very sentimental ceremony which was organised at the Karaoglanoglu
Martyrdom for the 100th Anniversary of the 18 March Canakkale Victory and Martyrs Remembrance
Day.
The ceremony started with a minute’s silence followed by the singing of the national anthem. Then, in
order of protocol, wreaths were left in the martyrdom. Following the speeches which underlined the
importance of the day, the ceremony continued with poetry readings.
The ceremony concluded with the remembrance of all the soldiers, from all nations who lost their
lives in this battle. After that, the martyrdom was visited and red and white carnations were left on the
tombs. It was a very sentimental ceremony for all.
With hope of a “world where everybody lives together in peace”…!

6. Sınıf Dünya Şiir Günü Dinletisi – 20 Mart 2015

Year 6 World Poetry Day Evening – 20 March 2015

Y3 Salamis Trip – 30 & 31 March 2015
As part of their Romans topic, Year 3 visited the ancient city of Salamis and learned how the city was
built and destroyed hundreds of years ago. We found out why the Roman statues lost their heads,
looked at the oldest painting on the island and discovered the Roman toilet system was a very public
and shared experience!

3. Sınıf öğrencileri, Romalılar temalı derslerinin bir parçası olarak antik kent Salamis’e bir gezi düzenlediler. Gezi sırasında kentin nasıl inşa edildiği ve yüzyıllar öncesinde nasıl yıkıldığını öğrendiler.
Romalı heykellerin kafalarını nasıl kaybettikleri öğrenmenin yanında, adadaki en eski tabloyu görme
ve Romalılar dönemindeki sisteme göre tuvalete gitmenin oldukça uluorta ve paylaşılan bir deneyim
olduğunu keşfettik!

Okulumuz 9. Sınıf öğrencileri, Türkçe derslerinde işledikleri “Doğa ve Çevre” teması kapsamında, yaşadığımız
çevreyi yeşillendirerek örnek bir çalışmaya daha imza
atmış oldular.

Nur eşliğinde, Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti Tarım ve
Doğal Kaynaklar Bakanlığı’na bağlı Orman Dairesi
Müdürlüğü’nün Çamlıbel’de belirlemiş olduğu alana 16
Mart 2015, Pazartesi günü “Ağaç Dikme Etkinliği”ni
başarıyla gerçekleştirdiler.
“Hayat Boyu Öğrenme” felsefesiyle hareket eden okulumuz öğrencileri, büyük bir heyecanla fidanları
yetkililerden teslim aldılar ve 120 çam fidanını diktiler. Bu sırada renkli görüntüler de ortaya
çıktı. Ellerinde kürek ve çapalarla fidan diken öğrenciler, doğaya duyarlı olan herkesi de fidan dikmeye davet ettiler. Etkinlik, öğrencilerimizin ağaç ve orman sevgisini bizzat yaşayarak öğrenmeleri
açısından oldukça yararlı bir faaliyet olmuştur.
Bu etkinlik sırasında doğayla başbaşa oldukça eğlenceli zaman geçiren öğrencilerimiz burada kısa da
olsa bir piknik yapma fırsatını da elde ettiler. Dikilen bu fidanların gün gelip orman olacağı ve böylece
gelecek nesillere duyulan sevgi ve onlardan beklenilen ümitlerin bu etkinlikle anlam kazandığı da
öğretmenleri tarafından öğrencilere önemle aktarılmıştır.
Bu yararlı etkinliğin gerçekleştirilmesinde emeği geçen herkese buradan sonsuz teşekkürlerimizi
sunarız.

“I Have a Dream…” Martin Luther King Inspiration

I have a dream, that one day people will stop making the world around us
into rubbish. That they would plant flowers and trees everywhere, make
big, green parks for dogs and people to enjoy, not little plastic ones that
break quickly.
I have a dream, that one day people will stop hunting animals like birds
and rabbits. Already, there are lots of butchers with meat. Why be greedy
and selfish? Why not be happy with what there is? Let the poor animals
live and there won’t be lots of selfishness around.
I have a dream, that one day people would stop throwing their dogs out.
There are already thousands of dogs about. A dog home is best for street
dogs and people’s pet dogs. It would be good to see that people care.

Year 7 Celebrate ‘International Day of Happiness’ – 20 March 2015

The 20TH of March is a very special day marking the ‘International Day of Happiness’ celebrated in
149 countries worldwide. In 7K we organised an assembly to celebrate the true meaning of happiness, aiming to make our friends and teachers happy. We discussed the meaning of happiness and
we all agreed that happiness is not materialistic but in fact priceless. Happiness is a combination of
many wonderful things, but the root of all happiness starts by first learning to love yourself, and then
follows: health, family, friends, education, peace, flourishing, joy of loving animals, and the list goes
on!
Maybe we cannot study happiness and maybe we are not born with it, but we can definitely find it. We
can make ourselves happy by being grateful for living a life many people and children around the
world do not have the privileges of. We can make ourselves happy even in the hardest moments by
being surrounded with the right people. What makes us happy is the gift called life.
The students worked in groups to organise the assembly. The first group introduced the special day
and spoke about the meaning of happiness; the second group prepared two PowerPoint presentations to visually show happiness around the world and shared pictures of students and teachers in
various moments of happiness; the third group shared their own happy stories; the fourth group selected three teachers from ESK to get their symbolic prizes as a sign of their appreciation and to
simply make them happy. The assembly ended with a happy dance, where teachers and students
shared moments of priceless joy and laughter.

7. Sınıflar ‘Uluslararası Mutluluk Günü’nü Kutladı – 20 Mart 2015

20 Mart, dünya genelinde 149 ülkede kutlanan ve çok özel bir gün olan ‘Uluslararası Mutluluk
Günü’dür. Bizler de 7K Sınıfı olarak arkadaşlarımızı ve öğretmenlerimizi mutlu etmeyi amaçladığımız
ve mutluluğun gerçek anlamını kutlayacağımız bir etkinlik hazırladık. Öncesinde mutluluğun anlamı
üzerine tartıştık ve hepimiz de gerçek mutluluğun maddi bir şey olmadığı, tam aksine paha biçilemez
olduğu konusunda hemfikir olduk. Mutluluk pek çok harika şeyin bir karışımı olmakta, kökeninde
kişinin kendisini sevmeyi öğrenmesi ile başlamakta, ve sonrasında: sağlık, aile, arkadaşlar, eğitim,
barış, kişisel gelişim, hayvan sevgisi, ile liste devam eder!
Belki mutluluğu inceleyemeyiz ve mutluluk bize doğuştan verilen birşey değil, ancak hepimiz onu bulabiliriz. Dünyada pek çok insan ve çocuğun sahip olmadığı ayrıcalıklara sahip olan bir yaşam
sürdüğümüz için kendimizi mutlu edebilir ve müteşekkir olabiliriz. En zor anlarda bile etrafımızdaki
doğru kişilerle mutlu hissedebiliriz. Bizleri mutlu eden şey, yaşam adı verilen bir armağandır.
Öğrenciler etkinliği hazırlarken gruplar halinde çalıştılar. İlk grup, bu özel günle ilgili bilgi vererek,
mutluğunun anlamı üzerine bir konuşma yaptılar; ikinci grup hazırladıkları iki PowerPoint sunum için
derledikleri fotoğraflarla dünya genelinden öğrenci ve öğretmenlerin mutluluk anlarını görsel olarak
gösterdiler; üçüncü grup kendi kişisel mutluluk hikayelerini paylaştılar; dördüncü grup ise ESK öğretmenleri arasından seçtikleri üç öğretmene, onları mutlu etmek ve ne kadar müteşekkir olduklarını
göstermek için sembolik armağanlar verdiler. Etkinlik, öğrenci ve öğretmenlerin paha biçilmez
eğlence ve kahkaha dolu anlar sergilediği ‘Happy’ şarkısı eşliğinde yapılan mutlu bir dansla son erdi.

Year 10 Students Measure Their ‘Horsepower’ – 3 June 2015

Year 10 IGCSE students recently carried out an exercise
to measure their maximum power output or horsepower. The experiment involved individual students running
as fast as possible up a set of external stairs at the
school. Our new technician, Ms Amy Garnham, helped
out with the experiment to ensure total safety at all
times. A person’s individual power can be explained as
‘the rate of doing work’. The students first measured
the total height of the staircase and then timed themselves running up the stairs. Having initially
measure their weight, they can then work out their power in watts – this is their weight times height of
stairs, divided by time to run up the stairs. Some students were incredibly powerful, registering almost
1 Horsepower in the experiment!
10. Sınıf Öğrencileri ‘At Güçlerini’ Hesapladılar – 3 Haziran 2015

10. Sınıf IGCSE öğrencileri son günlerde gerçekleştirdikleri bir egzersizle azami güç çıkışlarını ya da at
güçlerini hesapladılar. Deney, öğrencilerin bireysel olarak okulun dış cephesinde bulunan merdivenlerden mümkün olan en yüksek hızla yukarıya koşmalarını gerektirdi. Yeni fen teknisyenimiz, Ms Amy
Garnham, deney boyunca güvenliğini sağlamak için yardıma hazır bulundu. Bir kişinin bireysel gücü ‘iş
yapma oranı’ olarak açıklanabilir. Öğrenciler önce merdivenlerin toplam yüksekliğini hesapladılar, daha sonra ise yukarıya koşma sürelerini hesaplamaka için zaman tuttular. Öncesinde hesaplamış
oldukları ağırlıklarını kullanarak – vat olarak kendi güçlerini hesaplayabildiler; ağırlıkları çarpı
merdivenlerin toplam yüksekliği, bölü merdivenleri yukarıya koşma süreleri. Bazı öğrenciler oldukça
güçlüydüler ve deneyde neredeyse 1 Atgücü kaydettiler!

Primary had a super start to their summer holidays, when they had a water play afternoon! Everyone
had a brilliant time playing in the water, bubbles and with the hose pipe, then drying off together in
the sun!
The best thing? Getting your teachers drenched!
