Za’fî-i Gulshenî, wrote five shahrangizes which had been emerged during sixteenth century. So he had been one of the most important representatives of this sort of shahrangiz. ÖZET: Şehrengizler, bir şehrin güzelliklerini, gezilip görülecek yerlerini, öne çıkan kişilerini anlatmak amacıyla kaleme alınan eserlerdir. Za’fî-i Gülşenî, edebiyatımızda XVI. yüzyıldan itibaren görülmeye başlayan bu türde beş örnek vermiş olmakla türün önemli temsilcilerinden biri olmuştur. Bu yazının konusu, onun bugün Makedonya sınırları içinde bulunan “İştip” hakkında yazdığı şehrengizidir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Mesnevi, Şehrengiz, İştip, Za’fî, XVI. Yüzyıl Osmanlı şiiri. INTRODUCTION: 96 Bilal Çakıcı I had previously made a presentation on the shahrangiz of Giannitsa (Şehrengîz-i Şehr-i Yenice-i Vardar) by Za’fî.1 Apart from this work, the poet has also four other shahrangizes, 2 of which were composed in the poetic form of mathnawi (couplet) and 2 in the muhammas (five-line stanza) form. This paper will introduce his shahrangiz of Shtip (Şehrengîz-i Şehr-i İştife). Stating that “Pīr-i ţarīķat İbrāhīm-i Gülşenī’nin veled-i necībleridür”, the work Tezkire-i Şu’arâ-yı Âmid reports that the poet, whose real name was Muhammad, 2 was the son of Sheikh Ibrahim-i Gulshenî, one of the founders of the Gulshenî order. Nevertheless, this information should be treated with caution as no other work makes such mention.3 From the phrase “Ķuţbu’l-Ćārifīn cenāb-ı İbrāhīm-i Gülşenī ķuddise sırruhū 1 “II. Dil ve Edebiyat Araştırmaları Sempozyumu (24-26 May 2004)” jointly organized by the Department of Turkish Language and Literature of the Faculty of Letters at Ankara University and the Society for Language and Literature Studies [Dil ve Edebiyat Araştırmaları Derneği]. For a general overview of the shahrangiz genre, information on the poet, the text of the shahrangiz and its analysis, the reader is referred to the text of this presentation. 2 About the life of the poet, see Türkçe Yazma Divanlar Kataloğu, Maarif Vekaleti Matbaası, Istanbul, n.d., Vol. I, p. 113 (The information presented here are based on the work Tezkire-i Şu’ara-yı Amid by Ali Emiri Efendi); Esrar Dede, Tezkire-i Şu’ara-yı Mevleviyye, (ed.) The Shahrangiz of Shtip by Za’fî 97 ĥulefāsından olup... ” 4 in the work Tezkire-i Şu’ara-yı Mevleviyye, it is obvious that Za’fî was one of the caliph (deputies) of Ibrahim-i Gulshenî. In Esrar Dede’s work Tezkire-i Şu’ara-yı Mevleviyye, which offers the richest information about the poet, it is evident that he received lessons from Shahidî Dede, Shuhudî Dede, Gunahî Dede and Arshî Dede, that he was a man of a humble spirit, and that he adopted the Mawlawi path. Other information reported in the tezkires is as follows: Dedicated to his instructors and friends, most of his poems were composed in the sort of tahmis and terci‘ by nazire (imitative piece of poetry),5 he treated Sufi themes in his poems, he was keen on traveling6 and died in 1543 (950 A.H.). The poet’s passion for traveling is also evident in the following couplets found in his shahrangiz of Giannitsa and Shtip: “murād itdüm ki seyr idem cihānı teni ĥāk itmeden devrān ĥānı” gezerken pā-bürehne ben fütāde Yeñice-nām irişdüm bir sevāda” … “bu dünyā-yı denīyi itmeyüp ķayd gezerdi dehr içinde arayup ŝayd dilerdi ŝayd ide daĥı ġazāli gör āĥir n’oldı ol şūrīde-ħāli gezerken mīşe-i gerdūn içinde ŝan ol mecnūn gibi hāmūn içinde irişdüm bir diyār-ı cān-fezāya naćīm-āsā maķām-ı dil-güşāya 4 Genç, Tezkire-i Şu’ara-yı Mevleviyye, p. 314. Divan; 1 dibace (preface) in prose, 1 münacat (prayer), a panegyric on Hadrat Ali, 3 mülemma (multi-language) poems consisting of couplets in Turkish-Arabic-Persian-Chagatai languages, 9 kasides (panegyric), 6 terci’-i bend (stanzaic poem with a refrain), 25 murabba‘s (quatrains), 6 tahmis (cinquains), 5 shahrangiz, 393 gazels, 2 mufreds (single couplets), 3 chronogrammatic verses (tarih), 2 terci‘s (stanzaic poems) – one in Arabic and the other in Persian –, 2 tahmis (cinquains) in Persian, 42 gazels in Persian, 2 chronogrammatic verses (tarih) in Persian and 2 gazels which were later added to the main body of the work in the final page. Consisting of 139 sheets with 200x160 mm dimensions, the divan was inscribed on white paper in the rik’a script of 17 lines. Its binding was embellished with ebru (marbling). On the first page of the book there is the waqf stamp of Ali Emirî.7 The Divan of Za’fî incorporates five shahrangizes, three of which were composed in the poetic form of mathnawi (couplet) and treat the cities of Giannitsa, Shtip and Metun as the theme. The other two were composed in the muhammas (five-line stanza) form, one about the city of Âbqir, and the other titled as “Der-Sitâyiş-i Mahbûbân” (praising of beloveds). As it is the case in general with the mathnawis composed in this genre, the shahrangiz of Shtip 8 also keeps the number of couplets small, does not fall in line with the classical mathnawi division and moves on to the 7 Türkçe Yazma Divanlar Kataloğu, Vol. I, p. 113. In the title of the shahrangiz and the fourteenth couplet, the name of the city is referred as “İshtife”. This pronunciation is apparently closer to “Schtipje,” the old name of the city of Shtip (see Şemseddin Sami, Kâmûsu’l-A’lâm, Tıpkıbasım (fascimile), Kaşgar Neşriyat, Ankara 1996, Vol. 2, p. 972). 8 The Shahrangiz of Shtip by Za’fî 99 main theme following a brief prelude. In the mathnawi consisting of 83 couplets, following a prelude giving account of the blessing of youth and his passion for traveling, the poet goes on to tell about the natural beauties of Shtip, makes mention about a locality named Pinarbashi visited by everyone particularly during the spring and spectacular for its sweet waters. He subsequently eulogizes with six couplets each the persons named Ibrahim, Ali Balî, Islam, Mushti Ali and Sultan Mahmud, who are notable figures of Shtip distinguished for their several characters. As seen in almost all examples of the shahrangiz genre, the end of the mathnawi includes a concluding part containing arz-i hâl (appeal) and dua (prayer). The poet concludes this part with a gazel of five couplets, and declares that he finished the shahrangiz in 1540 (947 A.H.) with a chronogrammatic verse he added at the end of the work.
