Üç yanında bomboş uzanan çöllere inat, kumların ortasında
ve Basra Körfezi kıyılarında serap gibi yükselen bir şehir…
ubai’yi ziyarete gelenlerin çoğu,
uluslararası kavşak niteliğindeki
Sharjah Havaalanı’nı tercih eder,
ancak benim durumum biraz farklı.
Umman’dan karayolu ile varıyorum
Dubai’ye. Dubai, “modern” ve “farklı”
sıfatlarını isminin önüne katarak, çölün
üzerinde yükselen bir vaha. Her geçen gün göğe doğru
biraz daha yükseliyor, ergenliği yaşayan bir çocuk
misali, gün be gün daha da uzuyor, büyüyor. İşte tam
da bu nedenle, Dubai’ye karadan varmak gerçek bir
deneyim, öyle ya yakınlarda Dubai’yle yarışabilecek
düzeyde, silueti bu denli heybetli bir yerleşim yeri daha
bulunmuyor. Dubai, çölün ortasında bir serap gibi
belirip yükseliveriyor.

crossroads, but my case is a
bit different. I went to Dubai
from Umman by highway.
Dubai is an oasis rising on
the desert adding adjectives
like “modern” and “different”
before her name. Each day, she rises to the sky a little bit more,
like a child in teenages, grows and gets taller every single day.
And for this reason it is a real experience to reach Dubai by
land; for there is no other settlement around compatible with
Dubai, having a silhouette as magnificent as hers. Dubai
appears in the middle of the desert like a mirage, and rises.

Hedef: Gökyüzü…
Dubai’de farklı şekil ve ebattaki yüzlerce gökdelen, bir
devler ordusu misali deniz kıyısı boyunca sıralanıyor.
İnsan eliyle yaratılan bu manzaranın tam ortasında
Dubai’deki en uzun binaların bile en az iki katı
yüksekliğinde, dev bir ok görünümündeki Burç
Halife, göğü delercesine yukarılara uzanmış bulutlarla
yarışıyor. Üstünlüğünü şehre ilan ediyor sanki. (Spot
1) Şehir ise bu gayretin altında kalmıyor. Eh, hakkı da
var doğrusu. Yıllık ortalama sıcaklığın otuz derecenin
üstünde ve susuzluğun alışılagelmiş bir durum olduğu,
her türlü coğrafi dezavantaja sahip çölün ortasındaki
bu şehir, varoluşunu ve ününü dünya alemin duyduğu
zenginliğine borçlu elbette. Tıpkı deniz suyunun petrol
sayesinde bitkilerle tuzdan arındırılıp içilecek kıvama
getirilmesi gibi, elektrik de petrol sayesinde üretiliyor.
Şehrin inşasında Pakistan, Hindistan, Bangladeş ve
Filipinler gibi Asya ülkelerinden işçiler çalışırlarken,
şehirdeki Arap nüfusu % 17’lerde seyrediyor. Birleşik
Arap Emirlikleri, şu anda dünyanın en fazla göçmen
nüfusuna sahip ülkelerinden biri. Dubai de bu
durumdan payını fazlasıyla alıyor.
Rekor peşinde!
Dubaililerin anlattıklarına bakılırsa, 1963 yılında, henüz
bir balıkçı kasabası olan yerleşimdeki toplam araba
sayısı sadece üçmüş. 1991’de yalnızca tek bir gökdelen
Dubai semalarına doğru yükselirken, şimdilerde bu
sayı dört yüzü bulmuş durumda. 1930’lara kadar inci
ticaretinin merkezi durumundaki Dubai, 60’ların
sonlarına doğru petrol ve ticareti ön plâna aldı ve o
zamandan bu yana durmak bilmeyen, 90’lı yıllarda ise
şaha kalkan bir ilerleme yoluna girdi. 2000’li yılların
Dubai’si rekor peşinde bir şehre dönüştü. İnsan yapımı
“en uzun” yapı, “en yüksek” otel, “en büyük” alışveriş

Goal: The sky…
In Dubai, hundreds of skyscrapers in different forms, and
sizes line on the coast of the sea as if resembling an army of
giants. Just in the middle of this scenery created by humans
is Burj Khalifa looking like a giant arrow, twice the size
of other buildings in Dubai on the least, reaches up as if
tearing the sky, racing with the clouds. It is like declaring
its superiority to the city. (Spot 1) The city also responds
this effort. Well, actually she has the right to this. This
city in the middle of the desert with every geographical
disadvantage, where average yearly temperature is over 30
degrees C, and lack of water is a daily incident, of course
owns her existence, and fame to the world-wide known
prosperity. Just like sea-water purified of plants, and salt
can be drunk thanks to the oil, electricity is also produced
thanks to the oil. Workers from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh,
and Philippines worked in the construction of the city and
the Arabian population in the city is something like 17%.
United Arab Emirates is at the moment one of the countries
with the largest population of immigrants. Dubai takes
advantage of this on the most.

Küçük balıkçı kasabasından kalanlar…
Bu ön bilgilerden sonra, “Dubai’de vakit nasıl geçer?”,
“Nereleri gezilir?” sorularını cevaplama vakti geldi.
Şehrin gelişiminde, öncelikle turizmin canlandırılması
hedeflendiği için, Dubai’nin merkezinde ve çevresinde,
yapılacak ve görülecek bir çok şey var. Ancak bu turizm,
“eski dünya”da görmeye alışık olduğumuz türden bir
anlayışı yansıtmıyor. Dubai 70’li yıllara kadar küçük bir
balıkçı kasabası, “tarihi miras” anlamında sunacakları

Chasing a record!
If Dubaians are to be believed, in 1963 the number of cars
in the settlement, which has been a fishing town then, was
three. Only one skyscraper was rising onto the skies of
Dubai in 1991, and this number is around 400 nowadays.
Dubai the center of pearl trade until 1930’s, put emphasis
on oil, and commerce at the end of 1960’s, and set off a
road to progress, never ceasing, and rearing up in 1990’s.
Dubai of 2000’s turned into a city running after records.
The “longest” building made by humans, “the highest”
hotel, “the biggest” shopping mall, “the largest” ice rink in
a closed space, the restaurant, and pool on the “highest”
spot, the mosque with “the longest” minaret, and many
more... Gigantic buildings confront you on every part of the
city but none of the rivals is compatible with Burj Khalifa
823 meters long, and worth of billions of dollars. Another
remarkable advancement in the city in recent years is the
creation of artificial land pieces. “World Archipelagos
Project”, one of the islands created by humans couldn’t be
completed because of 2008 crises but island assemblages like
“Palm Jumeirah” or “Palm Jebel Ali” have already taken
their place in the Persian Gulf. (Spot 2)
Remnants of the small fishing town …
After this foreknowledge, it is time to answer questions;
“How does one spend time in Dubai?”, “Where to see?”
As the development of the city has aimed livening tourism,
there are many things to be done, and seen at Dubai’s
center, and around. But this tourism doesn’t reflect the sort
of mentality we are used to see in “the old world”. Dubai
has been a small fishing town till 1970’s, thus, the things
they can present in the name of “historical inheritance”
are limited. Though, it is possible to enjoy cultural tourism
in Deira, and Bur Dubai regions forming the old center of
Dubai. The old buildings intensifying around Al Bastakiya

oluşturan Deira ve Bur Dubai bölgelerinde kültür
turizminin tadına varmak mümkün. Al Bastakiya

Geçmişinde inci ticareti ile ün salan Dubai’de özellikle
kumaşçılar arasında yer alan küçük dükkânlarda uygun
fiyata her türlü inciyi bulmak hâlâ mümkün. Burası
şehrin en ucuz bölgesi aynı zamanda. Bu nedenle,
Ortadoğu ve Güney Asya’dan gelen göçmen nüfusun
çoğunluğu, yerleşmek için bu bölgeyi tercih ediyor.
Bu bölge, bir bakıma Ortadoğu şehirlerinin “klâsik”
görünümüne sahip. Eski merkezin dışındaysa bambaşka
bir dünya uzanıyor.

bir oyun parkındaymışsınız hissine kapılıyorsunuz.
Dubai hakkındaki “lüks ve eğlencenin her rengini
tatma” klişesi kısa sürede doğruluğunu kanıtlıyor.
Alışveriş cenneti dünya başkentleri, bu konuda Dubai
ile karşılaştırılamaz bile. Burada ölçülerin, konforun,
lüksün ve elbette ki fiyatların kesinlikle sınırı yok!
Alışveriş merkezleri, şehrin her bir yanını sarmış
durumda. Şimdilerde sayısı 70’e ulaşan Dubai’deki

region were built at the end of 18th century. Dubai
Museum, a sample of these buildings, hails visitors in the
interior part of Al Fahidi Castle.
In this part of Dubai markets of fabric, fruits, and spices
stil attract attention. It is stil possible to find all sorts of
pearls for convenient prices, especially in the small shops
between fabric sellers in Dubai famous in the past for
pearl trade. This is also the cheapest part of the city. Thus
immigrant population coming from Middleeast, and South
Asia prefer this part for settling. This region in a sense has
the “classical” look of Middleeastern cities. A completely
different world expand outside the old center.
“Play ground” for adults!
When you face contemporary Dubai, you feel like you
are in a play ground for adults. The stereotype about
Dubai being a place “to experience all colours of luxury,
and entertainment” prove to be true in a short time.
Capitols of world considered as heavens of shopping can’t
be compared to Dubai in this sense. Here, there are no
limits to comfort, luxury, and of course prices! Shopping
malls have packed all part of the city. The rivalry among
shopping malls in Dubai which have reached the number
70 at present, is on the highest level. Thus each has

Tunusia you will see the museum/part where you can
get information about the life of famous voyager in the
Egyptian themed part. (Spot 3)
In search unlimitedness…
Dubai continues to develop, and grow rapidly, and this
means the visitors will see innovations each time they come
to the city. The fact that one forth of the cranes used for
construction on the world are in Dubai gives an idea of
non-stop construction of the city. (Spot 4) Future projects
in entertainment sector are waiting to be realised. Some
parts of the entertainment center “Dubailand” worth of
64 billions of dollars have already started to render service
slowly. Climbing to the sight platform on 124th floor of
Burj Khalifa is like setting an example to the unlimitedness
of entertainment concept. If you prefer to go outside the
city you can witness the vast sands of the desert, wonderful
sunsets, views of virgin nature.
If you want to get closer to “luxury” for the last time, before
leaving the city, don’t miss to drop by Atlantis Hotel on the
coast of Palm Jumairah Island. Watch the aquarium of 11
millions litres, urging the limits of broadness, in the lobby
of this five stars hotel. This giant aquarium hosting tenths
of fish species owns its main fame to the shark that has
been left to the sea in 2010 but letting the shark free didn’t
diminish its fame.
Shortly, Dubai might be perceived by some as a place where
“modern” and “facile” life styles climax, this city at the peak

Dubai’deki alışveriş merkezleri içinde İbn-i Battuta, ayrı
bir dikkati hak ediyor. Burası sadece Arap Yarımadası’nın
değil, belki de dünyanın en orijinal alışveriş merkezlerinden
biri. Bu alışveriş merkezi, 14. yüzyılda Batı Afrika’dan
Çin’e kadar İslâm dünyasını karış karış dolaşmış ünlü
seyyah İbn-i Battuta’nın seyahatlerine referansla dekore
edilmiş. Merkezin her bölümü, ünlü seyyahın ziyaret ettiği
yerlerden biri temel alınarak hazırlanmış. Sadece alışveriş
yapmak için girdiğiniz bu binada, bir anda kendinizi
dünya seyahati yaparken buluveriyorsunuz! Çin’in devasa
kapıları, gerçek boyutlarda bir yelkenlinin boylu boyunca
uzandığı bir bölüme açılıyor. Başka bir yolu izlediğinizde
ortasındaki fil heykeliyle gözünüzü alan Güneydoğu
Asya kısımda buluyorsunuz kendinizi. Sağda solda göze
çarpan dükkanlar, lükse ilgi duyanları içeri davet ediyor.
Merkezin İran temalı kısmı, çinilerle süslenmiş bir kubbeyi
barındırıyor ve Fars diyarını çağrıştıran hoş ezgiler bu

the aquarium with the largest visual front on the world,
underwater zoo, SEGA play ground of 7000 meters, and
ice skating ground.
A thematic shopping mall…
Ibn-i Battuta among shopping malls in Dubai deserves
a different attention. This is perhaps one of the most
original shopping malls not only on Arab Peninsula but
also on the world. This shopping mall has been decorated
in reference to journeys of famous voyager Ibn-i Battuta
who had travelled in 14th century, inch by inch the
Islam world from West Africa to China. Each part of the
center has been prepared based on one of the places that
the famous voyager has visited. You find yourself on a
world trip in this building you went in just for shopping!
Gigantic gates of China open to a part where a sailing
boat in actual size reclines. If you pursue another part,
you find yourself in South-eastern Asia part attracting
you with the elephant sculpture in the middle. Shops
standing out on both sides invite all interested in luxury.
The Iranian themed part of the mall bears a dome
decorated with glazed tiles, and nice melodies reminding
Persian land accompany this magnificent vision. Before
proceeding to parts with a blast from Andalusia, and
muhteşem görüntüye eşlik ediyor. Endülüs ve Tunus esintili
bölümlere doğru devam etmeden önce, Mısır temalı
kısımda ünlü seyyahın hayatı hakkında bilgilenebileceğiniz

Dubai, gelişmeye ve büyümeye hızla devam ediyor ve
bu da ziyaretçilerin şehre her gelişlerinde yeniliklerle
karşılaşacakları anlamına geliyor. Dünyada inşaat amaçlı
kullanılan vinçlerin çeyreğinin Dubai’de bulunması,
şehrin dur-durak bilmeyen inşası hakkında güçlü bir
fikir veriyor. (Spot 4) Eğlence sektörüne yönelik gelecek
projeler de gerçekleştirilmeyi bekliyor. 64 milyar dolarlık
“Dubailand” eğlence merkezinin bazı kısımları, yavaş
yavaş hizmet vermeye başlamış bile. Burç Halife’nin
124. katındaki gözlem platformuna tırmanış ise eğlence
anlayışının sınırsızlığına bir kanıt teşkil ediyor adeta.
Şehrin dışına çıkmayı tercih ederseniz, çölün uçsuz
bucaksız kumlarına, harika gün batımlarına, bakir
doğa manzaralarına şahit olabilirsiniz. Şehirden
ayrılmadan önce son bir kez “lüks”e yakınlaşmak
isterseniz, Palm Jumairah Adası’nın kıyısında bulunan
Atlantis Otel’e uğramadan geçmeyin. Bu beş yıldızlı
otelin genişliğin sınırlarını zorlayan lobisinde bulunan

11 milyon litrelik akvaryumu seyre dalın. Onlarca balık
çeşidine ev sahipliği yapan bu dev akvaryum, asıl ününü
2010 yılında denize bırakılan köpekbalığına borçlu,
ancak köpekbalığının salıverilmesi ününde bir eksilme
yaratmamış.
Lafın kısası, Dubai kimileri tarafından “zengin” ve
“yüzeysel” modern hayat tarzlarının zirveye ulaştığı
bir yer olarak algılansa da, lüksün ve eğlencenin
doruğundaki bu şehir eleştirilere aldırış etmiyor ve
insan eliyle yaratılan bir “cennet” olmanın kıvancıyla
durmaksızın genişliyor, yükseliyor ve sınırsızlığın
peşinden koşuyor.
Damak zevki…
Damak zevkiniz için “lüks” peşindeyseniz, Burj Al
Arab Oteli, Grosvenor House Hotel, Hilton Dubai
Creek ve Raffels Otel gibi göz alıcı yerleri tercih
edebilirsiniz. Al Dhiyafah Caddesi’nde ise Lübnan,
İran, Fas, Türkiye, Lübnan ve Mısır mutfaklarını
barındıran daha uygun fiyatlı lokantaları bulabilirsiniz.
Caddenin kuzey ucunda lezzetli salata ve iyi kızarmış
ızgara et yiyip Akdeniz mutfağının tadına varacağınız
Sidra Restoranı’na uğrayabilir, diğer yanda kuzu eti
ve deniz ürünleri sunan Pars İran Kitchen restoranını
keşfedebilirsiniz. Oud Metha’da bulunan Khan
Murjan Restoran’da ise Kuzey Afrika ve Ortadoğu
mutfaklarının en leziz örneklerini Arap ezgileri
eşliğinde tadabilirsiniz.

created by humans, and runs after limitedness.
Palate…
If you are searching for “luxury” for your palate you
can choose flamboyant places like Burj Al Arab Hotel,
Grosvenor House Hotel, Hilton Dubai Creek, and
Raffels Hotel. On Al Dhiyafah Avenue you can find
restaurants with more convenient prices bearing the
cuisines of Lebanon, Iran, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt.
On the northern side of the avenue you can drop by Sidra
