Quality is neither on the screen nor on paper, it is in publishing! “Ekranlar sizi de yormuyor mu? Kitap kokusu olmadan yapabilir misiniz? Onları öldüren çağın taleplerine karşılık “Don’t the screens tire you? Can you do without the smell of books? Can a screen give you as much joy as leafing through a magazine? Do you read on the screens or is this just perusing? What do we make out of what we do when there is so much distraction on the screen? Why are books on the digital age printed?” Do not think that I am not in sync with the age I live in or that I do not follow any progress whatsoever because I started by saying such things. Do not just click to turn the page. Recently a perception operation has been ongoing especially among those who are working in digital media that traditional media is over, that it is in the throes of death. But is this really the case? Are we all so uninformed about the world when trying to put forth quality news with a traditional media understanding. Is publishing out of joint and are we lagging behind? Those who fit the times but present quality news will win As the director of a publication and a communication professional who has caught up with the digital times even before internet media, I am saying that I am glad we are traditional. I believe that this is valuable and permanent. All that come with instant messages are nothing but instant illusions… Let me explain what I mean: according to the history of communication and the communication models and theories that have been proven many times, each new technology that emerges shapes the world of communication but does not kill it. What kills them is that they do not meet the demands of our age… Communication is only changing its medium. If you have a quality publication, it will be quality in any medium. On the other hand, what determines quality in publishing is not the number of clicks, but quality publishing with a mind geared towards the right public. You can reach us not only our printed 5 editör notu editor’s note verememeleri... İnanın benim yatak başucumda bir radyo magazine but also through digital channels as well. Of course we can also reach you through the same means. We are in a double sided process. In other words, traditional media is not ending, but emerges out stronger than it was before. When TV emerged as an aural and visual medium, there was a common perception among people that this was the death of radio which is an aural based medium. However, over time it was seen that this perception was completely wrong. The radio also fit our times and became our road trip friend in the car or our best work colleague at work. It is right beside us whenever we want thanks to internet which is one of the most important advantages of the modern age. Believe me, I still have a radio on my bedside table and I still start the day with it. What I mean is that no media is in the throes of death. There is only a changing understanding of 6 hala var ve güne onunla başlıyorum. There are about 3 thousand pigeon breeders in Bursa. There is a habit to breed pigeons as a neighborhood tradition especially in the historical districts of Bursa. Pigeon lovers come together at bird shops or bird markets and talk for hours on end mostly about pigeons while watching in awe as they fly around. Indeed, terraces are very as important as the number of bedrooms and living rooms while renting a house. When you tell people that you breed pigeons, their response is always the same: “This is a sickness...” But you understand how deep this love goes when you find a chance to spend some time with them. You admire these people full of love for animals as you see how attentive they are to the bird fodder they use, to taking care of the birds and their training to fly. The pigeon lovers of Bursa also have a source of pride. Because the pigeon known as “Roller” is a rare bird of Bursa that goes way back in history. Indeed, this bird is not known as “Roller” outside of Bursa but as “Bursa Bird”. It goes by the name “Kesme” around the Thracian region and Edirne, but is known as “Bursa Roller”, “Bursa Tümmler” or “Rouleur de Bursa” in other parts of the world. Bursa Roller Pigeon Breeding and Sustenance Association and the Veterinary Faculty Department of Zootechnics and Genetics are working actively to ensure that this bird does not lose its unique properties and does not become extinct. They have registered the Bursa Bird but they do not think that it is enough. The Bursa bird shines just like the Green Tomb with its green color over a black shawl. It has one of the richest and brightest furs in the world… It is very rare. Even though it is one of the best known roller birds, those that do indeed roll while flying are very rare indeed since they do not find the chance to fly that often. And most people think that the “Bursa Bird” no longer rolls... This is mostly due to the fact that these birds are purchased and sold based on their costumes (appearance). Even though not all bird lovers act the same way, the underlying reason for this special bird to lose its unique properties is this. It is told that rollers were birds that flew down by rolling over and over about 30-40 years ago. But now they cannot do so. Its main attribute is its “speed”; it is a very “athletic” bird and can rise so high that it cannot be seen with the naked eye. These birds can also fly much greater distances than other types of pigeons. An adult Bursa Bird can stay in the air for up to 7-8 hours. This unique property is “as precious as gold” according to the breeders; however it is lost over time due to fear of losing them or fear of the birds being hunted down by hawks. The owners of rollers do not want their birds to fly so much… Today, roller birds can fly for about 3-4 hours on average. They cannot roll even though they are among the real roller birds… It is very difficult to track them in the air! Their speed in the air is also due to the properties of their species. Bursa Birds that fly with wings at a half-open stance can fly at dizzying speeds. Rollers can rapidly rise up or descend and they are great tumblers as defined by those who breed pigeons… Even though they are quite tough due to their nature, they can be quite timid in comparison with other pigeon species. In addition, they are also very sensitive to twinkle, which is another term that the pigeon breeders would know… Even though Bursa Bird is mostly bred in central Bursa, there are also breeders in the İnegöl, Mustafakemalpaşa districts as well as Eskişehir, Afyon and Istanbul. However, it is almost impossible to come across this species of birds outside of Bursa. These traditional birds of Bursa have certain characteristics that can be traced for generations since they date back 60-70 years as a tradition passed down from fathers to sons. This unique species has various colors such as black wing white tail, white wing white tail and a sebaceous gland on their tails. Geniş ve dışa çıkık bir göğsü, uzun ve kalın yapılı and bottom parts of the tail of Roller birds are black and they have a 12 wire tail structure with a thin white part underneath. Bursa bird is a family tradition and a heritage of Bursa for the locals as well as a source of life since it is so rare… Those who breed these birds do not even give importance to material issues, because the Roller means heritage for them and they only give importance to ensuring that no one else has the same bird as theirs… These birds rarely change hands unless there is some respect or friendship in between. That is why it is very difficult to come across Rollers at pigeon bazaars… The history of the species of Bursa Bird also dates back to the Ottoman era. All the way back to the time when the Ottoman Empire was established and Bursa became the capital in 1335. It is known that these birds have been brought to Bursa in 1387 by Kara Timurtaş Pasha who was the vizier at the time. It is estimated that the commander brought the Bursa pigeons from the regions he passed through in 1389 during the Battle of Kosovo. In short, Bursa Bird breeding has been ongoing for over 600 years. A wide and protruding chest and a long, thick beak are what strike the eye at first glance. The cute face with large eyes is something else that makes one smile… Roller is an ideal pigeon with a proportionate body and wingspan and it is also different from the other pigeons with its protruding forehead. The thick structure around the eyes of real Rollers is white and distinct, whereas Rollers that have started losing the attributes of their species have yellow or red fur around their eyes. Importance is given to black or bluish white color in the eyes. Almost no other pigeon species has the black hue that the Bursa species has. Indeed, the terms “just like the Bursa Bird” is used frequently when describing the bright black color for other pigeon species. In short, Rollers are very different and qualified in terms of the attributes of their species when compared with other pigeons. Their opalescent, bright black color is carried by red feet which are also unique to their species. White nails in the feet are standard from the ankles down with no fur or lint. It is very difficult to define Rollers in the air. Because even though they are flown in groups of 10 on average, they rarely fly together. They follow each other but end up scattered with a slight distance in between. They fly quite high and do not stop until they can no longer be seen. They do not need any companion while flying. They are flown in groups so that they can better display their flying properties. Rollers are quite nervous when they are about to fly but it is beyaz gagası ise bakınca ilk göze çarpanlar. Beyaz tırnakların standart olduğu ayaklarda bilekten aşağısının temiz yani kesinlikle tüysüz ve tozluksuz olması da gerekiyor. quite probable that they will go very far as soon as they are set free. It is a noble attribute of their species that they fly without giving heed to the other birds or the groups they come across in the air. The real Rollers beat their wings feverishly and suddenly open their wings so that their heads are right over the tail after which they start rolling. It is quite difficult for them to land and they can only make a sudden landing after several failed attempts. They also suddenly change altitude in the air which is a joy to watch. They can rise up or descend very rapidly. They suddenly dive in a 45 degree angle while flying high up in the air after which they start to rise rapidly again. They can also use this attribute to throw off the hawks or the sparrow hawks chasing them. They can also get used to their owners or coops very quickly and can find the way back home easily while ignoring the other birds they come across. Just one training session is enough for them to remain loyal. Bursa Birds also have other attributes that set them apart such as the facts that they are easy to maintain, they make good parents and they are very strong… One can come across pure and perfect families even today since Bursa Bird breeders are very sensitive to maintain them which is a source of pride for all the locals of Bursa. 39 40 41 odak noktası focus 42 Yüksek irtifadan Bursa Bursa from a high altitude “Bu işin birçok yöntemi var. Aykut Güngör is an important name of aerial photography in Bursa with many significant works in this field and today we discussed his many years of experience, memories and all details of aerial photography. Shall we first talk a little bit about Aykut Güngör? I was born in Gaziantep in 1974. I came to Bursa in 1991 for my education at the Uludağ University. I have been living in Bursa since then. I started my professional career as a photo journalist at Olay Newspaper in 1996 and I am still working there. How did you get involved in photography? When and how did you realize your interest? I was interested in outdoor sports when I was a student. It was during this period that I started taking pictures to document the places I visited and afterwards I started taking nature photos for more aesthetic reasons. I had no knowledge of photo journalism until I started working at the newspaper. How and when did you become interested in aerial photography? Firefighting and forestry activities carried out by the Regional Directorate of Forestry were shown during this time. I first started aerial photography like this. I had the chance to take pictures of many important regions during my first flight. There were helicopters of Nergis Holding. I took pictures of many different regions as part of my work. Then the number of these flights increased. I worked in many different projects. In 2003 I participated in a paragliding course, but I did not fly solo after the 22nd flight due to some different reasons. However, I flew with one of the best pilots in Turkey at many different regions of the country and took many pictures. I did not receive any special training in this field. I was lucky enough to have the chance to fly. I made the best of it and turned it into something efficient. How would you define aerial photography to someone who has no idea about it? Hiç bilmeyen biri için hava fotoğrafçılığını nasıl tanımlarsınız? No special equipment is necessary for aerial photography. It would be wiser to select the equipment according to the type of photos you want to shoot. You also need to select your equipment according to what you fly in. For instance you cannot take any lens with you if you are flying tandem paramotor. You have to choose the right lens prior to your flight. Başınızdan geçen bir 48 adventure you would like to share with us? There were some minor problems 2 – 3 times while I was paragliding. But they were things we could overcome. I experienced no difficulty while flying in planes or helicopters. If I had then we wouldn’t be making this interview now. I flew with an analog camera instead of a digital one while I was paragliding over Ölüdeniz. It was years later that I learned how insufficient I was about paragliding. I left the controls of the wing and took 4 rolls of dia until I landed at the Belcekız Beach. I thought I could land on the sea and so I packaged those rolls in waterproof bags. I did not know at the time that you should never let go of the wing controls while paragliding. It is pleasing to realize the danger I experienced years after it. Is there anyone you take as an example in this field? Google Maps. What is the biggest difficulty you experience? The most difficult part of aerial photography is to convince the pilot to fly at the altitude and speed you want. Weather conditions come after that. If your body is partially outside the helicopter, the pressure that the pal (the propeller lever) applies on your body can make life difficult for you. Planning before the flight will make your life much easier. What kind of works did you do in this field until today? What did you do? For instance were you a part of any special project? I have over 90 thousand photos most of which are shot over Bursa. I took part in many different projects. The aerial photos of Bursa I took prior to 2000 are significant documents now. I had the chance to document Bursa from the sky before urbanization became so intense. The ruins I saw by chance and photographed last year while flying over Iznik (Saint Neopytos) were declared as one of the 10 most important discoveries by the American Institute of Archeology. Do you have any dreams or projects you wish to accomplish in this field? There are still many places to fly to and many pictures to shoot and this field is still developing. You can now take such photos on the ground without flying. You can take aerial photos by attaching cameras to small drones you fly via radio frequency without risking your lives. However, the two are very different. The only objective is not to take photos when flying. My first priority is to be flying. Çocuğunuzla o an kullandığınız obje/cisim hakkında sohbet edebilirsiniz. Şeklinden ve detaylarından bahsetmesini isteyin. Görevinin dışında başka hangi alanlarda kullanılabileceğini düşünmesini sağlayın. Gene çevrenizdeki nesnelerden yola çıkarak hikâyeler yaratabilirsiniz. Örneğin; beraber bulaşıkları toplarken bulaşık makinesindeki çatalla ilgili komik bir hikâye oluşturabilirsiniz. Kurabiyeler pişerken “Şimdi ne konuşuyorlar acaba?” diye sorabilir, beraber ilginç fikirler bulabilirsiniz. Birlikte yeni yemekler yaratabilirsiniz. They can express themselves freely without any presumptions thus leading to an infinite creativity. They can make very different things even with very simple materials. Even though what they make does not always mean something for us, they are all trials that will play significant roles in the development of their creative thinking. These skills are actually the building blocks of a questioning and creative person even though they seem insignificant during the first years of our lives. It is actually very easy to look at life from the perspective of our children and to develop their creativity devoid of all stereotypes: leading a simpler life and spending as much time as possible with our children. Playing games with them will enable us to better understand their perspectives on life. We can think of many simple activities that will trigger creative thinking while giving us the opportunity to spend fun times together. What we should pay attention to is putting forth an attitude that does not try to place them in certain molds and that enables their imaginations to soar. Talking about objects that we see in our everyday lives makes us realize details that we had missed before. You may chat about the object you are using at the time with your child. Ask him/her to talk about its shape and details. Try to make him/her think outside the box and tell where else it can be used. You can make up stories using the objects around you. For example; you can make up a funny story about the fork in the washing machine while taking out the dishes. When baking cookies, you might ask, “What are they talking about now?” and find some interesting ideas. You can make new recipes together. You can even select the ingredients randomly. This will give the message of, “I am open to new and surprising things,” to your child. Give importance to his/her ideas as well and use the materials they suggest even though you think it will be bad. If the result is really bad, your child will have at least learned by trying and he/she will feel proud because you valued his/ her opinions. Where are you looking? Bu iki terim bizim iletişimde The currently accepted definition of psychology is as follows: Psychology is the scientific examination of the behaviors of human and animals. What we see in people is not limited with behavior. There is also an inner life underlying all behavior. The behaviors and inner lives of people are among the most interesting topics according to scientists. Why did a person we are communicating with or we are observing behaved in that manner? What were the underlying inner life and emotions? Did you ever think about the answers to such questions Did you ever look at people from this perspective? I do not know about you, but I am aware that scientists have been striving to find these answers for centuries. The events that make up the topics of psychology are related with the environment and relations of people. Because people are curious about the inner workings of the objects and events around them. I would like you to give extra attention to this sentence. As you can see, people are more curious about other beings and events around them than their own selves. People unknowingly focus on distant things first. It is not a coincidence that Assyrians and Egyptians first examined the stars, planets and the sun. Because stars, planets and the sun were the most distant objects they knew. As a result, astronomy has been one of the earliest developing scientific disciplines. They have started from the most distant. Otherwise they would have to start from themselves and examine their inner beings. When we examine the chronological start and development of science, we observe that people have started with astronomy and then moved towards themselves with mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Finally, social sciences such as sociology and psychology emerged towards the end of the 19th century. So, where are you looking at? To what is far away and distant or what is close and inside? Do you look outside when faced with different events and situations or do you look inside yourself? What kind of a person am I? What are my attributes? What are my skills and abilities? What is my intelligence level? How are my relations with my emotions? What are my anxieties? What are my weaknesses in human relations? How can I develop my personality further? Her insan hayatının bazı dönemlerinde duygusal zorlanmalar yaşayabilir. Böyle durumlarda bakış açınızı değiştirmede, doğru açılara odaklanabilmede ve sorunlarınızı çözebilme becerisi kazanmada yardıma ihtiyacınız olabilir. Böyle durumlarda profesyonel yardım almakta tereddüt etmemelisiniz. Or do you prefer to focus on the other instead of your own self? Psychology books mention the “You Language” and “I Language” terms. These two terms are two different styles that we use in communication. Do you focus more on what the other does while conversing or do you focus more on your emotions and thoughts? Do you react as, “You offended me”, “You ruined it”, “You are useless”, “You are terrible”, “You are hopeless”, “It’s all because of you”, “You are rude”, “You are thoughtless” or; “I am offended”, “I felt terrible”, “I felt bad”, “I am hurt”, “I thank you for trying to make me happy”, “I feel closer to you because you think of me”? The psychological problems we experience are actually due to our perspectives being wrong. One of the most important functions of psychologists is to show us the right perspective. Anyone can go through various emotional hardships during different periods of their lives. In such cases you may need some help to shift your perspective, focus on the right things and acquire skills in solving your problems. You should not hesitate to seek professional help in such instances. 57 estetik estetic İfadenizi değiştirmeden estetik kalmak mümkün It is possible to stay aesthetic without changing your expression Son yılların en favori ameliyatsız cilt germe tekniği tartışmasız Örümcek Ağı Estetiği. Medikal ipler Estetik International Teknik tüm avantajlarını cilt olan her yerde gösterebilme yapısına Spider Web Aesthetics is inarguably the most popular non-surgical facelift method of recent years. The biggest advantage of the Spider Web Aesthetics that I developed in 2011 is that it preserves the natural expression of the face and makes no compromises from the original look. Our skin; it is everything we have, the reflection of our body, its protector and also a structure in trouble with gravity while hinting at our age and sometimes making us seem even older than we really are. Our skin needs support no matter how well we take care of it and provide additional support via preventive treatments. Spider Web Aesthetics has a mechanism that can support the skin without any surgery. On the other hand, people are scared of facing a loss of expression in such applications. They also do not want to face the risk of not being able to smile as they did in the past, have a cold facial expression, looking unnatural or artificial. Spider Web Aesthetics is successful in all these, you can return to your self 5-10 years ago without changing your expression. The most important reason behind the Spider Web 58 Aesthetics name is that it is a method that is designed with inspiration from nature. The method is carried out by weaving a systematic structure that is as strong, pure and harmless as a spider web underneath the skin. Knowledge of anatomy and good hand workmanship are musts. The body reacts as soon as medical threads are woven underneath the skin and the collagen amount increases to freshen up that area. It starts weaving its own biological web around these threads. One first wonders, “Does it hurt?” when one hears about needles and threads. No, there is no pain. The skin is locally anesthetized using anesthetic creams. The natural web that the body weaves itself remains intact even though the threads disintegrate within 6 months. On the other hand, the lifting effect is observed, the skin becomes tighter, lines disappear and most important of all the skin is revived. The method has the ability to show all its advantages on all areas of the skin. For instance, if one desires the revival of the neck, interior arms and legs, belly, breast and in short any region in the body, we can apply the method there. You can immediately go back to your social life after Spider Web Aesthetics which is a nonsurgical method. Our patients put on make up and leave our clinics after the operation without any delay in their lives and moreover, they start smiling at mirrors thanks to their refreshed skin due to increasing amounts of collagen. 59 60 61 efsane kareler legendary shots Mutluluk bir listeye sığsaydı If happiness could fit in a list Gösterime girdiği 2007 yılında herkesi, kendi “Bucket List”ini yapmaya teşvik etmiş; hem oyuncu kadrosu hem de konusuyla sinema tarihine derin izler bırakmıştı. On the wing of a fly, on the smallest piece of rice, on the feather of a bird that drops down from the sky… Art can find us anytime, anywhere and in any form. Just like in the artworks of the micro-miniature artist, painter and jewelry designer Hasan Kale from Bursa. Bu üç parçaya belki biraz da cahil cesareti katarak He creates his works of art using overlooked details of life and even from materials that have been put aside as trash. His objective is to be able to open up new windows to life and create different perspectives through his art… The dimensions of the materials he uses decrease every year. Being farsighted does not hinder him. Hasan Kale has reached international success with his works and together we talked about the micro-art movement that he pioneers, about how he turns every detail in life from a piece of hair to the skin of an onion into a work of 79 yakın plan close - up kendi çizgimi oluşturdum. Mikro art and how he has become “the man who fills in a fig seed”. Where and how did your journey start? I was born in Bursa İnegöl, but I have been living in Istanbul for a long time now. I met with colors and lines at an early age. I was 5 years old when I realized that I had an interest in painting. I painted for many years. I am one of those who could not continue school due to the hardships in the 80s. So I am a high school graduate individual and a selfeducated artists. Indeed, I am an ordinary man with extraordinary deeds. What was the starting point of micro-art which you have pioneered? I continued to paint after completing my military service. I had the chance to discover my interest in miniature art during this period. I wanted to take classes, but no one wanted to teach. I didn’t understand why and I did not question it too much. What I did was to choose my own tutors from the past. I locked myself in the house for 6 months and learned about the fineness of Sultan portraits from Nakkaş Osman, color and harmony from Levni and the fluency of the brush from Mehmet Siyahkalem. I created my own style by maybe adding some courage of ignorance to these three. Because while doing all this, I had no unethical intention such as signing my name underneath artwork from old periods using the technology of our day. While working on what I learned and my observations, I realized that I could draw about 20 – 25 lines in one millimeter and that none of these straight lines touched each other. I had only one question in my mind at the time: how smaller could I go? This question opened up two roads in front of me. I was either going to act and try to seek the answer to this question or I was going to lead a life saying “I wish”. So is this how “the man who fills in a fig seed” was born? Of course, I might have exaggerated a little bit. When I asked this question to myself, it was three in the morning and I went into the kitchen. The one piece of bean I saw as a canvas was the start of everything. I initially thought of trying out rice and lentil, but I was scared and I decided that beans were more doable. The painting that took shape on the bean that night was the starting point of the road that I went on to create a brand new means of communication for the entire world. Over time, I worked with rice and lentil as well to create about 300 artworks. And of course fig seeds… The materials I used started to vary and get smaller. Pasta, gourd seed, butterfly, bird feather, fly wing, fish scale, onion skin, hair strand… Everything that I could get a hold of and the many details in life were now parts of my canvas. Today when I think back, I can see that I have done the right thing. I keep on telling myself that I have done the greatest thing by choosing the first option and striving to find the answer to the question that I had asked myself. Do the materials that keep on getting smaller make life difficult for you? I am farsighted, I have such a sanat; uykusuz geçen günler, geceler demek. Her şeyden önce mutluluk. My hands never shake when I am working, I am lucky in that aspect. Contrary to what comes to mind, I do not use any magnifier or such a device. I only wear my glasses prescribed by my doctor. Of course I cannot know what will happen in the future, I mean if I will have to use a microscope as I get older or not. This is a work of love. Not something you can do if you really don’t want to or If you do not really love it and put forth your heart out for the sake of it. It requires too much effort, time and attention in comparison with other forms of art. Microart means sleepless days and nights. It can take from about two days up to two months. People think that they are completed very quickly because they are small, but this is not the case. What did you gain by pioneering this art form and by putting forth your works of art in this field? First and foremost, happiness. Because this was a dream about which I wasn’t sure where it would lead. Being able to accomplish this makes me happy. In addition, there has been an immense base of followers outside of Turkey even though it is not known too well here in my country. Introducing my country and my city to the world as a local of Bursa is something that makes me very proud. Recently, I am one of the artists who have been the topic of the highest number of news worldwide. I’ve been to countries that I did not even know the name of and met people with languages foreign to me. More than a billion people know this art. There are many people now who do not speak the same language but who have found a means of communication through this art form. It is very popular abroad even though it is not appreciated a lot in our country. It is followed by both art lovers and artists. Reporters write news articles here as well but “Mikro sanat; hayatın içinde değersiz görünen, bir köşeye atılmış, unutulmuş hatta çöp kabul edilen her şey bir sanat eserine dönüştürüyor. “Micro-art transforms every overlooked detail of life and even materials that have been put aside as trash into works of art. This was one of my goals. To open up new windows to life and create different perspectives to everything that is known to exist but has been overlooked. To create capsules of art using “trash”. 82 not many people come and find me. I usually see foreign news about myself. This is the sad part. Because I have so many things to tell if only one would ask. Other nations and countries have laid claim to many things that have sprang forth from our lands. I don’t want the same thing to happen to this art as well. As I mentioned at the start, I do not care about being popular, I just want people to know that the origin of this art is Turkey, that micro-art is a Turkish art form. What do you do to spread the word about micro-art and to make more people learn about it? For example, do you give lessons? I am also a jewelry designer and I give lessons in this field, but there is no one I can teach micro-art to. Because I do not see enough patience and interest in the people around me. The youth of this day and age are very impatient and their common ground is to earn more money. Such long lasting things that require patience, love and toil are not preferred by them. There are some who are interested to become popular, but this is not enough. Actually they might put forth works that are much better than mine, but they have to see this as an occupation. An occupation that forces them to take earning money out of their focus. There has to be some people who do not earn money or who can take such risks so that these kinds of art forms can blossom. So, even thinking about such a form of art can be considered extraordinary. Can we say that micro-art and art in general has some “madness” in them? I believe that all art works include Yapılan her sanat eseri biraz delilik içerir bence. “Çöp”lerden sanat kapsülleri yaratmak. a bit of madness. And they should. What separates micro-art from other forms of art is that it requires more patience, labor and attention. There is no turning back. You have no luxury for error. The piece you are working on can become trash with just one line or one slip of the hand. This is a means of expression. An art form through which you reflect your perspective towards life. It is something that can only be carried out with love and infinite patience and I believe it is the reason I am alive in this world. Sooner or later we will depart from this world. But our names and souls should carry on with what we leave behind. Think of Leonardo, Picasso, Osman Hamdi. It is the traces that they have left behind which make us talk about them even hundreds of years after their passing. It is no coincidence that I can think 83 yakın plan close - up Mikro sanat adına gelecek için planlarınız neler? Üretmenin, tasarımın sonu yok ve bu konuda hiçbir eğitim almadan, yalnızca kendi kendimi yetiştirerek bu noktaya geldiysem ne mutlu bana diye düşünüyorum. of only Ahmet Ayık when I hear the word wrestling. We can give many such examples. Every good thing that we do comes back to us sooner or later. People should do what they know best and what they are good at. They should know how to appreciate what others have done and to pursue what they can do instead of looking at others and saying, “I can do this too!”. Just as I expect support for my art, I also try to support other forms of art and other artists. Especially Turkish artists living abroad. This is the case not only for artists but also for those who support art and artists. We all have different tasks in life. I know my task; it is to create. To ensure that this art form survives. Maybe it is the task of some other person to embrace it and to make all the world learn about Bursa and Turkey. Who accomplishes this is not important. Be it Hasan Kale, Ahmet or Mehmet; doesn’t matter. An artist from Bursa has made all these. A Turkish artist has developed it. This is the important part. I don’t care about being famous, I want to make this art form be well known. Even though this way of thought is seen as modesty, it is the right thing to do. If everybody could think in this way, all labors would see the value they deserve and everyone would be happy. What are the contributions of micro-art to you and to the world of art in general? Handcrafts will never fade away even if technology advances as much as it can or the human factor is diminished as much as possible. They have survived for hundreds of years and they will continue to do so in the future as well. Contrary to the ever shifting fashions of technology and the changing and modernizing world, handcrafts will always be present. Micro-art is such a craft. I perform this art with my naked eyes but it requires magnifiers to view. I communicate with foreign people in a language that I have created thanks to this art; I toil in a pioneering form of art. Of course, nothing can replace the peace and happiness this gives me as an artist. Yes, I had to sacrifice a lot throughout these 20 years. I could have earned a lot of money in other fields, but I do not care since this was not my priority. It is very enriching for me to have created works of art with no criteria in the world. Micro-art transforms every overlooked detail of life and even materials that have been put aside as trash into works of art. This was one of my goals. To open up new windows to life and create different perspectives to everything that is known to exist but has been overlooked. To create capsules of art using “trash”. What are your future plans for micro-art? I opened many exhibitions in Bursa, Turkey and all over the world. Some of my artworks are on exhibit at different museums as well. However, the most important goal I have in this field is to open up a museum. I want it to be in Turkey but after toiling for 10 years in this field, I started saying, “I can open this museum in any country that gives the attention that micro-art deserves”. I did not give up and I never will. I also met a group in Japan. I am considering a book project with them that includes all my works in their original dimensions. A special book that comes with a special Hasan Kale signed magnifier that everyone will want to see even if they are interested in micro-art or have heard it for the first time. I wish I could have found the support I need here in Bursa and had the means to carry out this project in my own country. What do you do other than micro-art? How do you spend your time? I design jewelry and work as an art director for a motorcycle manufacturer in Turkey, but I am so into micro-art that I can easily say I have no other life. Because I make use of the works of art I create while designing jewelry as well. Apart from all this, for example we designed a motorcycle with 1903 parts for the stadium opening ceremony of Beşiktaş. Production and design have no end and I am very happy when I think that I have succeeded all these without any education and by my own efforts. 85 bakış açısı point of view Bir bilet; yeni bir hayat A ticket; a new life “Tazminatımı alıp sırt çantamla yollara düştüğümde geride bıraktığım, bana göre “gri” olan hayatın baskısından, ağırlığından kurtulmuştum artık. Her şey nasıl başladı? Hayatım düzenliydi, görünüşte her şey yolundaydı. Serviste gidip There have always been changes that we could not dare to carry out throughout our lives, places we wanted to go but never could or things that we wanted to do but were not able to spare time. However, we are surrounded with examples that inspire and lead us to accomplish all such things. Gizem Altın Nance is one of those people with an interesting life story that can change our perspective towards life or even help us give it a whole new direction, since she has quit her job she started right after graduation and changed her life with a ticket she purchased when she started traveling all over the world by bike. A single sentence summarizes her perspective towards life: “Be happy no matter what you do!” First of all, can you tell us about yourself? I am a nature lover, bicycler and traveler mother of a 3,5 year old girl living in Istanbul Büyükada, born in 1974, graduate of Faculty of Economy, Co-President of Wheat Association; but first and foremost a “happy” person. This happiness is related with your interest in “going”, right? Most definitely. I was 25 years old when I took that first step and left everything behind. Now, I can say that I have passed onto a settled life, but following that desire to go has provided me with a life that I am really happy to be living in. How did it all start? With a ticket, quitting from work, a bicycle and a Green Card application… My life has more than one turning point, but they all complement each other when I look at the big picture. After graduating from the university, I accepted the fact that I had to work just like every other young person does and I got a job. This is one of those things that the society, the system teaches us which we do without ever asking why. You go to school, graduate and start working. I worked with this mentality for about 2–3 years. However, I could never feel happy. All right, I had a good job, my income was fine for a new graduate. I had an organized life and everything seemed to be going fine. But I was unhappy and my only goal in life was to be happy. Going back and forth between home and work by a shuttle, spending the working hours inside four walls… All these did not suite me or my perspective of life and I had to do something. I did not know what to do and how to go about it, because there was no example I could look up to and find inspiration. I told all these to my boss and submitted my resignation. My boss was very understanding and instead of accepting my resignation he suggested to fire me and pay my compensation. This compensation enabled me to purchase an interrail ticket for a one and a half month long Gizem Altın Nance 87 bakış açısı point of view “Evimizi, arabamızı, ne kadar eşyamız varsa hepsini sattık. Burada 6–7 Europe trip. Thus, my boss became one of the hidden heroes of the turning points in my life. At this point, let us talk some more about the “interrail” ticket that made you write the book “Buy a Ticket”. What is it exactly and what effects did it have on your life? Interrail is a ticket that gives you unlimited travel rights in second class trains throughout Europe. But it is not an ordinary ticket. This system provides a wonderful opportunity to young people with less money who wish to travel. As someone who has lived and experienced it, I can say that interrail is also a ticket to adventure, to becoming a world citizen, to freedom and to discovering yourself. The book entitled “Buy a Ticket” is another ticket to a whole new life that I started by following the urges within me, as well as a book I wrote to open up new windows for people who read it. These were what I thought when I started writing what I experienced, what I felt and what I lived through. When I received my compensation and hit the roads with my backpack, I was saved from the pressure and weight of the life that in my opinion was “grey”. Colorful days awaited me. What I had to do was to discover myself along with the world and to savor each and every moment I experienced. And that’s what I did. What was the second turning point and how did it come about? It was a Green Card application that I had forgotten all about and indeed an application that was actually made in my name by a friend of mine. I hit the roads again and this time went to the States. I lived here for about 6–7 years. I met my spouse, I settled down. I had a house, a car, everything. I was living the American dream, but there were things that did not go right. Because somehow I had once again drifted into a way of life that did not fit my perspective. A book I read at the time which told the story of a couple who sold everything they owned to yıl yaşadım. Eşimle tanıştım, bir düzen kurdum. Evim, işim arabam her şeyim vardı. Her şeyin her zaman mükemmel olması elbette imkânsız. Hastanede verdiğim yaşam savaşı bile beni o güne kadar yapmış olduklarımdan go on a world trip gave me the inspiration I needed. That urge to “go” had been revived again. I turned to my husband and said “come on”. We sold whatever we had; our house, our car and all our furniture. What remained was what our bikes could carry. A pair of pants, at most two shirts and some undergarments. That’s all. I was on the road again, but this time I was not alone. So the world tour by bike started. What did you experience along the way? “We sold whatever we had; our house, our car and all our furniture. What remained was what our bikes could carry. A pair of pants, at most two shirts and some undergarments. That’s all. I was on the road again, but this time I was not alone.” Of course everything cannot be perfect all the time. We had moments which were not pleasant. There were times when we could not find food, or sometimes even water. I will never forget such a time when I found an orange in my backpack that I had forgotten and we shared it with my husband and ate it savoring each and every bite while inhaling its perfect scent. It was tastier than all the delicious foods I ate throughout my life. We first passed through Europe by bike and then started a journey from Istanbul to Sydney as part of a project that we started for the acceptance of bikes as a transportation vehicle. Kazakhstan was included in the second stage of the tour. I was hit by a wedding convoy here and I was brought back to Turkey in an ambulance. Even the life and death struggle I gave in the hospital was not enough to make me feel regret for all that I had done until that day. You know, there are movies about this. “Into the Wild” about the life of Christopher McCandless is one of these. I watched this movie with a friend of mine who is also a traveler like me. When I cried at the end of the movie, she said, “Why are you sad? He lived it.” I remembered this during that difficult time. I had already told my husband before we departed. I was not going to regret this decision no matter what would happen to me and I was ready to pay the price of my own decision whatever it be. Don’t all these require too much courage? Actually no. It is because of this perception that I tell everyone to turn off their TVs and even take 89 bakış açısı point of view pişman etmeye yetmedi. Bu konuda filmler vardır bilirsiniz. Christopher McCandless’in hayatını anlatan “Özgürlük Yolu” filmi bunlardan biridir. Çünkü her şeyden önce bakış açımı değiştirdim. Vapurla, otobüsle, bisikletimle istediğim her yere gidebiliyorum. Hiçbir şey satın almıyorum. Evdeki her eşyamız, kullandığım her şey ikinci el. Her şey kendiliğinden gerçekleşti. Ben kendime döndüğüm, bakış açımı değiştirdiğim, nasıl bir hayatın içinde gerçekten mutlu olacağımı anlamak için kendime zaman verdiğimde bir şeyler yerine oturmaya başladı. Bisiklet yolculuğuna çıkarken eşya konusunda lüksümüz yoktu. Yalnızca 4 çanta. Bunun dışında her şeyi sattık. Şimdi her sabah kahvaltımda ekmek kızartırken o kokuyu içime çekiyorum. Tadına doyuyorum. Şükrediyorum. Çünkü kıymetini biliyorum. Tatmin olamadıktan, şükredemedikten sonra neye sahip olduğunuzun hiçbir önemi yok inanın. Kızım da benim gibi olmaya başladı. Henüz 3 yaşında ama mesela bir evi tarif ederken, them out of their house if they can. I am living a settled life since the past few years. I live in a house among trees in Büyükada with no TV where I cultivate my own vegetables, fruits and I am very happy in this way. Because first and foremost, I changed my perspective. We are not living in an evil world as it is popularly known. TVs show it that way to us. All are illusions, smoke and mirrors. I met so many nice people along the way. These cannot all be coincidence. There are also good people in the world. And they are actually more in number than we think they are. There were people who shared their bread and water with us. Fate takes you to where you need to be once you step through that threshold and you meet the people you need to meet. If this is an act of courage, yes, it was courageous to take that first step through the threshold. Wasn’t it difficult for you to pass onto a settled life? What kind of a life did you build for yourself here? Not much. First of all, I cannot say that I am completely settled and that I am not going anywhere else. But I was always saying before that if I ever were to settle down, I would do it at Büyükada where I have been living for the past 6 – 7 years and where you can almost see no motorized vehicles. And that’s what I did. I do not and will not have a car; besides I do not have a budget that I can allocate to purchasing a car. I can go anywhere I want by boats, buses and my bike. I purchase nothing. Everything we have in our house is second hand. I do not have any luxuries and I do not wish to have any. I am not after more than what I need. This was not something I planned or that I was after. It all happened by itself. Things started to fall into place when I turned into myself, changed my perspective and spent some time to understand the kind of life that I would be happy to live. We had no luxuries when we started our bike trip. Only 4 bags. We sold everything else. And when we got back we realized that we actually did not need more. The only luxury I have in my house is a toaster. Believe me when I say that it gives me a happiness that many people with expensive cars cannot feel. Because the smell of toasted bread was the one thing that I missed the most during my travels. Now I take a deep breath every morning when I toast my bread for breakfast. I savor every bite. I am grateful. Because I know its value. Believe me, what you own is not important at all if you do not know its value. My little girl is also growing up to be like me. She is only 3 years old but for example when she is trying to describe a house she remembers it by the surrounding trees and plants. Because that is how her perception developed. I cannot know what will happen over time. Maybe she will live a life on the road or maybe she will want to lead a corporate life. Probably the world will be much different than today when they grow up. That is why the only thing I want for my daughter is “happiness”. It does not matter how, so long as she is happy. Do you have plans to “go” somewhere quite soon? As I said, the road is ongoing for me, for us. I should not boast a lot but I am sure that I will never work at a nine-to-six job. Probably I will not sell everything I have and go on another world trip again. At least not now. I am sure that I will never watch TV for the rest of my life. I suggest this to everyone. Turn off your TVs. After chatting for 10 minutes with someone, you can understand if they watch TV or not. At least try it out for a while and see how much things will change. Choose yourselves. You will be happier with less things. Live like you want to live. Then you will not have any debts as well, or credits that you need to pay for years and years… Do not think what the value of the house you wish to purchase will be in 5 years’ time. Live a happy life in a home where you feel happy. Believe me, this is not as difficult as you think it is. It is not as difficult as you fear it is. Talk to and meet people who have accomplished all these things. Read books and watch movies that will inspire you and support you to take that first step through the threshold. Change your perspective and first of all change it towards yourself. etrafındaki ağaçlardan, bitkilerden hatırlıyor. Just like building small plots of land in glass bottles to keep up with the “terrarium” trend of recent times… Doğanın davetkâr güzelliklerine karşı koymak pek mümkün değil, özellikle güneşin yeniden boy gösterip bahar aylarının enerjisiyle dolduğumuz dönemlerde... The number of people who sell everything they own in urban life to throw themselves onto the bosom of nature or those who decide to spend the rest of their lives in villages is increasing every day. We see them in the news and read their interviews 93 bilgi hapı information pill insanların sayısı gün geçtikçe artıyor. Whereas others think that it is quite early for such a dramatic change and decide to bring nature back to their homes, rear gardens or offices. “Terrarium” is the latest trend of recent times and it is a stroke of genius to meet just such a demand and to unite men with nature. Terrarium is a word that is coined after the word “terrain” meaning “land” in English. It is a simulation of nature in which one can grow suitable plants and animals and even transform it into a “paludarium” (simulation of a sea or lake) by acquiring a large enough container and adding some wetland. If you cannot go where tropical plants and exotic animals live, you can make them come to you by establishing a plot of land the dimensions of which are up to you. Even though terrarium has become popular in the last couple of years, it is actually an expression that first emerged in the 1800s. It is a plant preservation method that was accidentally discovered by Nathaniel Ward, a nature loving doctor in London who wished to protect the plants he planted from the pollution of the air they were exposed to. You can either use a cup as small as your palm or build a glass space that is large enough to meet the demands of the plant or animal you wish to look after. After deciding on the dimensions, all you have to do is to select the soil base and the temperature in accordance with the plant or animal you wish to grow. You have to know which plants are better suited to such environments if you wish to grow plants in your terrarium. The same goes for animals as well. For example, plants such as baby’s tear, fittonia or short ferns and cyperus are preferred whereas reptiles such as hamsters, iguana, frogs, turtles, chameleons, snakes are animals that are preferred. Everything can be used as terrarium from a candy jar to an old aquarium, from a wide enough bottle to a glass that is the size of a dinner table; you can build up a small world in your house or your office. Because, terrarium has an environment in which living things can survive as well as a system that is similar to that of the world. A carbon cycle takes place when you put together the right material and close off the lid. You can set up a terrarium with your own efforts or get help from professionals and creative designers who are interested in this issue… 95 film şeridi storyboard Hayallerinin peşinde bir kadın A woman chasing her dreams İlk oynadığı sinema filminde, 15 dakikalık bir performansla Oscar’ı kucakladı ve bir anda tüm dünyanın gözdesi oluverdi. En İyi Yardımcı Kadın Oyuncu ödülüne layık görüldü, yılın kadını ilân edildi. Lupita Nyong’o 12 Yıllık Esaret’in ardından, bu yıl gösterime girmesi beklenen Yıldız Savaşları’na katılmaya hazırlanıyor. She won the Oscar with a 15 minute performance in the first movie she starred in and suddenly became popular all over the world. She was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and was deemed the woman of the year. Lupita Nyong’o is preparing to take part in the Star Wars this year after 12 Years a Slave. Kimine göre bu güçlü Lupita Nyong’o Lupita Nyong’o started her career from the top and made a fast start… She was always modest despite this huge accomplishment at an early age… Famous brands sought after her, world famous magazines added the “style icon” or “woman of the year” titles to her “Best Supporting Actress” title. Whereas she preferred to be as modest as to say that the interest directed towards her should not be more than she deserves while savoring the happiness of making one of her childhood dreams come true. We got to know her as Patsey from the movie “12 Years a Slave” based on a true story which won many awards… She was the supporting actress of the movie but she gave life to the suffering slave with a performance surpassing many leading roles… She starred in unforgettable scenes with a performance of just 15 minutes and won the Oscar. She had always wanted to be a successful actress, but had not dreamed of attaining such a huge success in the first movie she starred in. This award meant the word “impossible” faded forever. Nyong’o sees herself as a Kenyan despite the fact that she was born in Mexico City in 1983 and she returned to her country when she was one year old due to the fact that her father became the Minister of Health in Kenya. She started dreaming during her “joyful” childhood in a crowded house with 6 kids. She always believed that her dreams would turn into plans over time and that she would find a way to reach her goals no matter how impossible they may seem. Yalnızca başarılı oyunculuğu ile değil kendine has güzelliği, some, this strong personality and success comes from her father known as a politician, from her mother who was a successful businesswoman and from her cousin who is accepted as one of the strongest women in Africa. But according to Nyong’o, the only secret of herself and her family was knowing that success was the desire one felt for his/her work as well as the joy one felt after accomplishing the task at hand. She went to university in America, received film and theater education at the Hampshire College and for a while worked as an assistant in the technical teams of movies. She then started taking part in theater plays while attending Yale School of Drama. After graduation she starred in a 2008 movie entitled East River as well as a TV series in Kenya known as Shega until the time we met her as slave Patsey. She was also awarded the Film Critics Association award at various festivals with her success in the movie which won three Oscars. Lupita Nyong’o was nominated in the Golden Globe and BAFTA and was also selected as the “Most Beautiful Woman in the World” by People magazine in the same year. Viewers were also happy for all these awards and successes because her performance in the movie had affected the viewers as well as the critics and she had sparkled on the white screen with a very short role. This was an enthralling light that was believed to last for a very long time. All the world was carried away with this light; all magazines, newspapers, directors and renowned brands had started seeking her. Everyone was in awe of Lupita Nyong’o not only because of her successful acting but also with her unique beauty, style and modesty… The young actress succeeded in attracting attention with her kind manners, sincere smile and warm looks as well as with her success and talent. Nyong’o mentioned in an interview that she was still in shock for taking part in an organization that she was watching in awe just one year ago while also starring in “Star Wars Episode 7” that will tarzı ve mütevazılığı ile de kendine hayran bıraktı Lupita Nyong’o… Her mother used to call her “space traveler” when she was a kid because of her fancifulness and now after many years she is preparing to become a real space traveler. has never boasted about her physical appearance. She had to wait to become 16 to find herself beautiful and this was only possible when she attracted the attention of a photographer in the town where she lived. After taking her photos, the photographer has told her that she looks great and even fabulous thus resulting in springing up her self-confidence in her beauty. She believes that beauty is the reflection of a loving heart on one’s face with pure and clean emotions and lives her life accordingly. Nyong’o received many film offers after following her success in 2014 and she is currently evaluating all of them while despite the long shooting schedule of the movie she is also keen on not giving up the theater which is her first love. Nyong’o has spent the last 10 years of all life dreaming to be a successful actress but she still thinks that she became successful in a very short period of time and thus believes that she has to keep on working more and more to deserve this. The titles she is given such as the woman of the year or the most beautiful woman in the world only make her feel abashed because she O artık bir güzellik elçisi, moda ikonu, stili, aksesuarları takip edilen, oynadığı ilk filmiyle Oscar alarak 2014 yılına imzasını atmış bir kadın… There are Dalmatian type coasts here – famous for its dogs – just like the coasts of Croatia that sprawl parallel to the sea full of a myriad of carstic islands. Even though these coasts do not host thousands of islands like the Adriatic Sea, you should definitely come here even if only to enjoy the perfect scenery that this wonderful coast type provides. The best way to do this is via boat tour at Kekova which is currently under protection… Actually we can summarize the issue with a very classical sentence. Kekova is a route where “Nature and culture intertwine”. You can reach here in two ways. The first is via a 3 hour long roundtrip on boats that set out from the harbor at Kaş, a district of Antalya… Whereas the other is via boat tours that start from the Üçağız Village in the Kekova district that reach here in about 35 minutes… A trip full of sun and sea sounds good, right? Then your route for this summer is set… Kekova Island has given its name to the region. However this island is not included in this route. Batıkşehir (Sunken city, Dolichiste), Kaleköy (Simena) and the village of Üçağız (Theimussa) which we can call as the entrance to the region… Kekova is the favorite of divers as well with its unique underwater beauty as well as its underwater flora and fauna with the clearest of waters in Turkey… Historical remains and amphoras dating back to the 7th century have been determined near Batıkşehir that has been submerged as a result of earthquakes that occurred between 141 and 240 B.C. Another spot you will see during the Kekova tour is the Pirate Cave… It can also be said that you will have a wonderful trip in boats where much superior and quality service is provided in comparison with many other touristic locations in Turkey. We can even say that the menus with mainly sea food open buffet Mediterranean Cuisine selections are more than necessary for a daily boat tour. The tombs of kings have become the symbols of Simena. They are everywhere. The most famous one is underwater as I already mentioned. The giant flagpole with the glorious Turkish flag that ripples in the wind at the peak of Kaleköy greets the Lycians who have lived thousands of years before and accompanies the heavenly nature. Kral Mezarları Simena’nın adeta sembolü. Her yerde karşınıza çıkıyorlar. Kalenin içinde küçük bir Roma Tiyatrosu var, hemen aşağıda ise onlarca lahit yüzlerce Roman Theater inside the castle and dozens of tombs dating back hundreds of years are still intact right below. Structuring is forbidden at Kaleköy which is a first degree historical and protection site. You can go everywhere via small paths. It is also a very pretty fishing village. There are fish restaurants at the beach so close to the sea that you can almost put your feet in the water. There are only four stone house pensions in the village with a capacity of about 100 beds. Those who wish to spend their holidays here should book in advance. Kaleköy is the preferred destination of those who seek silence and those who wish to rest and read. It’s as if Kaleköy is located behind a star gate that opens up to a place that is outside of time while also far away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle of daily life. The historical name of the Üçağız Village is Theimussa which means the Country of the Sun. There is a symbol of the sun on almost all ruins. There are also pensions and fish restaurants here as well just like in Kaleköy. The Tersane (Shipyard) Cove which was used for repairing 105 gezi - yorum travel - ing yıldır sapasağlam duruyor. Her yere küçük patikalarla varıyorsunuz. Gökkaya Cove is another frequent destination for daily boat trips with its intricate structure… The name of the Aquarium Cove is enough to make you understand just what kind of a place it is. Kekova shelters many boats since it is a natural harbor but actually there are many coves along it due to its coastal structure; it is up to you to stay or not. A boat trip to Kekova is simply a “wonderful idea” for those who are after routes where one can almost hear the Lykians strolling around, see every tone of blue and enjoy the pristine waters as if mermaids will pop out any second. When the summer is upon us, the heat is starting, the most ideal destination for the travelers who do not give in to laziness of the beach and are experience-oriented, is the route to the north. No, I am not talking about the Baltic States. But a German city which still could be considered as North European, the capital city Berlin. It is indeed ideal with its average summer temperature of 23-24 degrees. Enhance your point of view and stop seeing it as the 82nd city of Turkey. 108 Berlin - I Özgür Çakır We are talking about a city with a population of 3.5 million, the capital of a country which is sort of the leader of Europe, Germany. Besides, we are talking about Berlin which has seen two world wars and has gone through a division, with a deep history, blended with German discipline, is colorful with its multicultural structure, museums, has a diverse night life and entertainment sector; a city with a lot to offer. That is why you will need at least 3-4 days to visit Berlin, to enjoy and maybe sort of explore the city. Even I needed two issues of Dergibursa to narrate the city. There is a lot to see, a long list of things to do and considerable amount of history to digest. Well, it is your lucky day, because the following paragraphs summarize some parts of Berlin’s history. As your type-e-tive writer, the piece would be incomplete unless I Almanya gibi Avrupa’nın lideri konumundaki dev bir ülkenin 3.5 milyon nüfuslu başkentinden bahsediyoruz. Benim kendisini anlatmak için iki sayılık alana ihtiyacım oldu delved into the interesting and intriguing recent history. So, here you are... 2nd World War, the Berlin Wall, and the Cold War Years Ok, when I say history, apparently I did not mean I will go all way the back to Middle Ages. Our topic is the Second World War (WW2) and its aftermath. Berlin, the former capital of the German Empire, was also the capital of the Nazi Germany, of Hitler. Mentioning Hitler, a small footnote, even though you will visit many museums and historical places throughout your trip, you will nearly never come across that certain individual. As I understand, this dictator, who has only been a source of shame for Europeans and humans in general, and Germans in specific, is trying to be erased from our memories… mesela. Buyurunuz... 2. Dünya Savaşı, Berlin Duvarı ve Soğuk Savaş Yılları Tarih dediysem Orta Çağ’a kadar inmeyeceğim tabii ki. Konumuz 2. Dünya Savaşı 109 uzaktaki yakın so far so close ve sonrası. Batıda Almanya Federal Cumhuriyeti’nin kurulması üzerine 1949’da -bugün nedenini bilmiyorum ama hafızalarımızda efsane bayan milli gülle atma takımlarıyla yer etmiş olan- Demokratik Almanya Cumhuriyeti (DDR) nam-ı diğer Doğu Almanya 110 Like almost all other European cities, Berlin was in ruins after the WW2. Invaded by the Soviet Red Army in 1945, it was divided into 4 sectors, like the rest of Germany, among the winners of the war, the 4 allied states, who later on parted ways dramatically. While the western ones (the USA, France, and the UK) invaded the west of the city, the Soviets had a say in the eastern part. If you look at the map you will see that West Berlin is on the East German land. Later on, Soviets put an economic embargo on West Berlin. The Western Allies, not losing heart, continued aerial support of Berlin which turned into a border post. After the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the west, in 1949 the German Democratic Republic (GDR-in other words East Germany) was established and for some reason it is embedded in our minds with its legendary ladies shot put team. However, since West Berlin belonged to FRG, it was granted some special rights. The crossing between east and west of Berlin were only made from certain spots and only for some authorities. The most famous one of those, which is today a hub for tourists, was the Checkpoint Charlie at the American part of the city. Civilians were not allowed to cross to West Berlin and snipers were placed on the borders. Still, after the division, until 1955, using the Berlin subway 270 thousand civilians crossed over to West Germany, that had great economic growth with the help of its Western Allies. Hence, the Soviet Union, regarding West Berlin as a menace, a castle of capitalism, a source of anti-propaganda, came up with the solution of building an actual wall. On August 12th, 1961, the temporary construction of the Berlin Wall was started and completed overnight. Other than the people jumping from the roofs and windows of the buildings adjacent the wall, the people who dug tunnels, the ones who tried to demolish the wall with their cars or the ones who left their border patrolling jobs and ran to the other side, the people who are today subjects of history books and museums, Berliners ilan edilmiş. Zamanın imparatorluk merkezi olan Mitte ile birlikte, Berlin’i inşa eden mimar Karl Friedrich Schinkel’in tasarladığı binalar, cross from east to west was stopped with severe methods and became impossible. The Berlin Wall turned out to be the embodiment of the iron curtain of the Cold War years for 27 years, drawing the line not only between East and West Berlin but also the fight between Communism and Capitalism. The old imperial center Mitte, buildings designed by architect Karl Friedrich who built Berlin, embassies, palaces, almost all of the museums including the Bergamo Museum where the Temple of Bergamo smuggled from Turkey is displayed, they were all in the eastern part of the city. The fate of the iron curtain and the wall is known. With perestroika, the border policies of Eastern Bloc Countries became more flexible, enabling East Germans to cross to West Germany through other countries, the Wall was rendered obsolete. Upon realizing this, the East German government announced its decision to demolish the Wall in November 9th, 1989. Starting from the Brandenburg Gate all barricades and check points were removed and within an hour hundreds of thousands of Germans piled up on both sides and the Wall of Shame was buried in history. Before too much time had passed, in October 3rd, 1990, both sides of Germany reunited and Berlin regained its integrity as a state city, becoming the capital city of Federal Republic of Germany. Turkish Population Of course when we say Berlin, we are talking about a European city where relatives of some of our readers probably live. The source of Germanic Chocolates from our childhood. Currently around 200,000 Turks of three generations live in Berlin. Though this number seems insignificant within the 2.7 million Turkishorigin people living in Germany, it is the largest number of Turks living in a city outside Turkey and also the largest foreign population in Berlin. The densest Turkish population in Berlin is the Kreuzberg district. Among the 150 thousand people that live in Kreuzberg, 50 thousand of them are foreign-origin people, 111 uzaktaki yakın so far so close büyükelçilikler, saraylar ve Türkiye’den kaçak yollarla getirilen Bergama Sunağı’nın sergilendiği dünyanın en önemli müzelerinden biri olan Bergama Müzesi de dahil olmak üzere müzelerin tamamına yakını kentin doğu kesiminde kalmış. 60’ya yakın turistik yer ve müzede ücretsiz geçiş, birçok yerde özel indirimler, Hop on-Hop off otobüsleri ile ücretsiz şehir turu ve süresi boyunca sınırsız toplu most of whom are Turks. We will get back to “Kroytsberg” issue later… Actually, Berlin is a golden opportunity for those who hesitate traveling abroad for language reasons. When you feel you are lost, you will definitely find some Turkish guy who will tell you to “go right from the super market, then to the left”. It is a rich global city, and you can ask for help in your mother tongue. What more do you want? Budget, Accommodation, Transportation Thanks to the large population of Turkish people living here, there are a remarkable number of flights from/to Berlin, incomparable to other European cities. With promotion tickets, you can fly to Berlin with domestic flight prices. I can say it will be a relatively cost-effective trip. You will definitely not see absurd prices like London or Madrid. I can also say the hotel prices are reasonable. Even if the under&over-ground public transportation is perfect, the place to stay is the Mitte district which is at the center. Before going into detail, if you are planning to see museums and it is your first travel to Berlin, my suggestion is, as was in many other cities, to get a “Berlin Pass”. It costs 79€ for 2 days, 99€ for 3. Though it seems too much at first, it is not when you do the math. It provides free entrance to around 60 touristic places and museums, discounts in many others and free Hop on-Hop off bus rides through the validity period along with free public transportation. You can buy it on-line and pick it up from the Hard Rock Café in Ku’damm. The booth is open from 10:00 to 17:00 and you need a printout showing your purchase. Brandenburger Tor The answer to the question “where to start?” is of course the symbol of the city, the Gate of Brandenburg. If JFK has come here during the Cold War to visit, he must know something, right? Do not miss it. Pose in front of this historical structure, shouting “Ich bin ein Berliner”. To the west of the square is the giant city park Tiergarten, up north is Reichstag, in the South the Holocaust Mahnmal and Postdamer Platz and towards the east is one of the most romantically-named streets I have ever heard, “Unter den Linden”-under the linden trees. I know it sounds a bit complicated when you count all of them at once. Do not worry; we will go through them one by one. The Gate of Brandenburg has 12 columns, six entrances and six exits. The columns create 5 passageways in total. Back when it was first built, the civilians had the right to use the outer two roads. The one in the middle was for the royals and important traffic only. On the gate stands probably the famous Quadriga, some sort of antique Olympic carriage drawn by four horses. It was designed as a symbol of peace in 1793. However, it became a toy in the hands of battling generals. When Napoleon defeated Prussia, he dismantled it and took it to Paris. When the Prussian General Ernst von Pfuel defeated Napoleon and invaded Paris, he took the Quadriga back to Berlin. The olive branch on it was replaced with an iron cross as a symbol of victory. When the Nazis came to power, they started using the gate as a symbol. During the WW2, the gate was damaged but not destroyed. East and West Berlin governments restored the gate but it was not opened until the wall was built in 1961. The iron cross of the partially damaged statue was removed by the East German’s Communist Government because it symbolized Prussian militarism. The iron cross was put back into its original place after 1990, when Germany was reunited. Reichstag Our next stop might seem odd for a touristic visit: the Parliament building. Do not roll your eyes. It has a quality which makes worth the visit; the glass dome. It is an example of marvelous engineering per its mirrors with different angles reflecting the sunlight into the parliament, refining and using the water from rain, producing electricity from the solar panels above it, and dazzling with its exquisite view. Do not forget to get the audio ulaşım. Batı yönünde önünde bulunan meydanın devamında devasa şehir parkı Tiergarten, hemen kuzeyinde Reichstag, güney yönünde Holocaust Mahnmal ve Potsdamer Platz meydanı, doğu yönünde ise duyduğum guides which explain in detail the Berlin view before you as you go up the spiral road to the top of the dome. It is both a building interesting and exciting to be inside and presents a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. One of facts the Germans take pride in about the building is that Hitler never set foot inside this building (it was unusable due to arson). On account of popular demand, you have to make a reservation to see the Reichtag. Unfortunately it is not possible to go and see it on a last minute decision. For the ones who missed the opportunity, the garden is very popular and available to dawdling. The sunbathers provide a nice contrast to the parliament building. Imagine people of Ankara sunbathing at the garden of the Turkish Parliament. Something like that. The Holocaust Memorial Our next stop is the area, which most probably attracted your attention while at the Brandenburg, composed of concrete slabs called the Holocaust Memorial, the 113 uzaktaki yakın so far so close en romantik isimli caddelerden biri olan Ihlamurlar Altında “Unter den Linden” yer alıyor. Böyle bir çırpıda sayınca biraz karışık oldu farkındayım. Telaş etmeyin teker teker gezeceğiz efendim. Brandenburg Kapısı on iki sütuna, altı giriş ve altı çıkış kapısına sahip. Devasa Memorial for Massacred European Jews. As the name suggests, it is a memorial dedicated to the Jews who lost their lives during the genocide. It is spread onto a vast space, creating delusions just by its image, turning into a labyrinth once you enter inside, a confusing and disturbing architectural structure; just as it was designed to be. There is also a museum at the same place. When you put it this way it sounds mundane, like it was constructed “just because they had to” but I think it is a sincere effort and it is impressive. Rather than covering-up the genocide, they face it and keep a constant reminder in the middle of the city to avoid its recurrence. Since it is an open air area, except the museum, you can visit it at any hour of the day. You cannot “not see” this monument on a 19,000-squaremeter area, formed of 2711 concrete slabs of different sizes, looking like giant tomb stones with no names on them, like the stelae-the burial stones of ancient Rome. An excellent visiting spot to remember, taking responsibility from the common ground of being human, feeling upset, to rest, spend some quiet time and contemplate. Potsdamer Platz We are at one of the most famous squares of Berlin. You can see street performers or open air exhibitions here. You can also see the remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall here. For some reason I do not know, it became a custom to stick gums on one of the remaining pieces. So the ones who like traditions and whose jaws have been aching keep this in mind. The well-known Sony Center is here too. It is an upscale building complex constructed in 2000, designed according to the futuristic lines of the Millennium, with lots of stores starting from Sony, fine examples of world cuisine, luxurious rental suites, offices, film and art museums, movie theatres, an IMAX theater, and a small Legoland. Moreover, there is free Wi-Fi for all customers. Outside this complex, on the main street there is the Deutsche Kinemathek Museum for Film and TV and in front of it is the Boulevard of Stars. Inside the stars on the ground are the names and signatures of popular people who made important contributions to the cinema sector. One of them is the Turkish director Fatih Akın. He has a remarkable place in the museum as well since it is the Modern German Cinema. It is like a temple for cinema lovers. The usage of space and its design is striking. Marlene Dietrich also has a noteworthy mention in the Museum. At the journey through time, the magical power of cinema and the enchanting atmosphere was well described and successfully passed to the viewer; especially the reflections of German cinema on the past century, movie excerpts, the lighting in the setting along with the surprising passages between places and objects. The German Television Exhibition opened in 2006 at the top floor presents a fun look to the 50-year history of East and West German TV. There are many familiar things starting with tutti-fruitti. It is really surprising. You are not allowed to take pictures inside. The security guides that spot you taking pictures come near you and make you delete the pictures one-by-one. Well, I took the risk for you… My recommendation for the ones who are willing to see a panoramic view of the city from above while you are in Potsdamer Platz is, as the name suggests, Panorama Punkt. It is less of a hustle compared to the Berlin TV tower with its shorter queue, more practical with its fastest elevator in Europe, and the fact that another iconic symbol of the city, the TV tower, is also visible sets it one step ahead. What else could you expect? Kaiser-WilhelmGedächtniskirche (the Destroyed Church) Our next target is another symbolic structure, “the Destroyed Church” and the surrounding shopping area. You need to walk from the Postdamer Square to west, by bir alana yayılmış, sade görünümüyle tezat algı kırılmalarına neden olan, içine girince labirente dönüşen, tam da tasarımcısının hedeflediği şekilde kafa karıştırıcı ve rahatsız edici bir mimari yapıt. When you get lost, lift up your head and look for a star. You cannot miss the humongous Mercedes star, 15 tons and 10m diameter, placed on the top of the Europa Center skyscraper. As a matter of fact, our destination is right next to it. This historical protestant church was built in 1895 in honor of the German Emperor Wilhelm 1st. It was severely damaged during a bombing in November 1943. During renovations, the winning project planned to demolish it but because of the reactions they decided to keep it as a monument. The new structure was erected right next to it creating a serious contrast with its modern design. The modern church built in 1959, which could be considered futuristic even today, definitely deserves a visit. The characteristic of this new structure is that it is formed of 20,000 small, square-shaped glasses. In the mornings, the interior of the church displays a sight which is dominantly blue in color and it leaves you in awe with its architecture. We are at the place for shopping enthusiasts. KaDeWe, located on the Tauentzienstrasse, very close to the Destroyed Church, can be categorized somewhere between the Turkish YKM and British Harrods. It is a shopping mall which has become one of the symbols of Berlin. As far as I am concerned, what you should do is get on the elevator and go 115 uzaktaki yakın so far so close Potsdamer Platz Berlin’in ünlü meydanlarından birindeyiz. 1895 tarihli bu Protestan Kilisesi, Almanya İmparatoru I. Wilhelm adına to the gourmet floor on the top. If shopping in KaDeWe did not cool you off, and you want to see more reasonable prices, let’s move on. Kurfürstrendamm, in other words Ku’damm, is a nice and wide boulevard which is an alternative shopping heaven in Berlin. Without naming names, let me say all world-renowned German brands have a store on this street. For those of you who do not want to hang out with the shopaholics of the group, the Hard Rock Café Berlin is also here. If this does not fly your kite, there is the Bauhaus Archive Design Museum; maybe you are interested in design and architecture. Tiergarten “Enough with the city”, come to the oasis. Tiergarten, the largest city park in Germany after the Englischergarten in Munich, mentioned in our previous issues with its 250 hectares square footage. This park is beautiful in every season. If you are at the Southwestern end of the park where I have left you, around the Destroyed Chuch, you will see the zoo and a bike rental place. It is so much fun to cross the park with a bike, getting lost in a forest within a city, come across a familiar place and diving back in, to losing yourself in the forest once more. In the middle of the park, on the Strasse des 17 Juni which cuts park from east to west, right in the middle of the Großer Stern (the Grand Star) square, there is the Siegessäule (the Victory Column). You have another tower to climb up and look at the view. Towards the west, you will arrive at a familiar place. The Gate of Brandenburg, the Reichstag or the Holocaust Memorial. The ones walking north and crossing the bridge on the Spree River will run into the central train station, Hauptbahnhof with its striking architecture. Little Istanbul Let’s get to Kreuzberg, the most interesting neighborhood of Berlin growing more and more popular recently. In 1960s, the immigrants from Turkey settled in – to be politically correct – the least popular part of West Berlin, right next to the Wall. The area called as Little Istanbul among the Turks of Berlin, was suddenly in the heart of the city when the Wall was demolished. The unusual atmosphere created by the effect of the Hip-Hop culture, Afro-American immigrants, and the Turks, in time, transformed into a whole new thing. Along with a Turkish neighborhood vibe owing to its large Turkish population, the area has an underground and bohemian taste to it. So, you can head to Kreuzberg towards the evening, have doner or “ocakbaşı (the type of Turkish kebab cooked in front of you by the chef)” for dinner, go to a “boutique” marginal bar where you will get to try crazy cocktails, after that listen to some seriously good live music at a rock bar. Do not be like “I am from Turkey, why would I go to the Turkish district”, it is really an experience. Unter den Linden, Under the Linden Trees Unter den Linden, the pedestrian street named after the linden trees it is lined with on both sides, has a very romantic name and is actually very romantic, stretching towards Lustgarten from the Gate of Brandenburg. If you are staying at the Mitte region, I could recommend it for a nice morning stroll. For breakfast, the famous Einstein Café will be waiting for you. Though it is a touristy place in a historical setting, you should at least have a cup of coffee. An apple strudel or a berlinerthe German doughnut would go well with it though. Take out your notepads and add it to your to-do list. The boulevard hosts many important structures of the city, from past to present. For example, the oldest building on Under den Linden, the old armory of the city is today the Deutsches Historisches Museum (Museum of German History). Just a little further is Kronprinzenpalais, the old palace of the princes of the Hohenzolleren house. Neue Wache built in 1817 as guardhouse for the royal troopsnow a memorial; Berlin Opera on Bebelplatz square, St. Hedwig Cathedral, and Altes Palais (the Old Palace) are all situated on this street. On the west end, bir anıt olarak yapılmış. Yıkık kilisenin çok yakınındaki Tauentzienstrasse üzerinde konumlanan KaDeWe bizdeki YKM ile Londra’daki the Russian and Hungarian embassies, the Hotel Adlon on the Pariser Platz can also be seen as you walk along. The Von Humboldts’ statues in front of the Humboldt University are interesting especially with the night lighting. Are there only historical buildings here? By all means, no. Souvenir shops, a fancy Mercedes Benz store, a couple of private touristic museums on the WW2 and the Berlin Wall… I know museums are all over the place. I have yet to name the most significant ones. Berlin is a real museum city with more than 700 museums. It is unbelievable. A little further ahead the Museum Island, the Pergamum Museum, and the Berliner Dome await you. I still have not mentioned the visual feast at the East Side Gallery; we have not taken the boat tour on the river. Alas, we are at the end of the pages of this issue where I can ramble on. We will pick up right where left off in the 30th issue. More to come in the following issue of Dergibursa. “Fortgesetzt werden”. To be continued… 117 uzaktaki yakın so far so close Harrod’s arasında bir yerde konumlandırılabilecek türden, Berlin’in sembollerinden biri olmuş alışveriş merkezi. Burası her mevsim ayrı güzel. Not defterlerini çıkarıp “to do list”inize ekleyiniz efendim. “Fortgesetzt werden”. 119 uzaktaki yakın so far so close Berlin’den 16 instagram karesi / 16 instagram shots from Berlin #dergibursa @dergibursa 120 @oscarsnapshotter
