This May in the town seems to be warmer and
gloomier than the previous years. Still, everyone
seems to be happy despite their small worries
and lives closed for any surprises. However, this
happiness is a little disturbed by the arrival of
Muzaffer who has made up his mind to shoot
a film in this town where he had passed his
childhood. His father, Emin, is bent on saving the
small forest he cultivates on his property from
confiscation by the authorities. His nephew, nine
year-old Ali, who wants a musical watch. He has
to carry an egg in his pocket for 40 days without
cracking it, according to terms of an agreement
made with his aunt, who has promised in return
to convince Ali’s father to purchase this much
wanted item for his son. And Muzaffer’s cousin,
Saffet, who is a young town dweller whose
affords are all doomed to failure by bad luck (or
is it by his own rebelliousness) and who dreams
of going to Istanbul.

What is capitalism?
A grey, healthy, funny, intelligent, happy, selfish,
rich but lonely bunny. Big factories, hamburger
menus, colourful pop songs, extinct animals, quiz
shows and Paris Hilton.
What is capitalism?
Let’s not fool ourselves. This isn’t just about
money. Today, it is more than that. Four
teenagers who sleep with rich people for money
rent out a room of their apartment to a guy just
back from military service. Their struggles of
identity, conflicts of hierarchy, and the spiralling
violence of every passing day make their parties
ever wilder. They battle with the naked realities
in the colourful but abstract world they have
created. Meanwhile, the guy from the military
searches for an answer as to why he is struggling
out in the streets of this cruel world.
Baks Bani is the dark story of the purchased and
the purchaser.

Homicide teams receive a tip-off which leads
them to a buried coffin in the Youth Park. Inside
the coffin is an old woman. On first inspection,
it’s reckoned that the woman was buried alive.
Behzat Ç., a homicide specialist, has never
encountered a murder case like this before.
Firstly, it’s incomprehensible why the old woman
would be killed in this way. The old woman was
the mother of a retired police officer. When
he begins investigating the officer, Behzat Ç.
finds himself running up against a number of
obstacles. The retired officer is known in the
organization as ‘Memduh, the Avarell Dalton’,
while the person who executed the crime calls
himself ‘Lucky Luke’. Along with his teammates
Harun, Hayalet and Akbaba, Behzat Ç. scours
every corner of Ankara in an attempt to catch
the accomplices, Gorbachev Hasan and Pembo.

After retiring from the State Forestry Office,
Faik moved back to his hometown and started to
farm the land he inherited from his grandfather.
A sharecropper family takes care of his land and
flock of goats. His son and his two grandsons
arrive one hot summer’s day for a vacation.
They come at a time when Faik’s conflict
with the neighbouring nomads is escalating.
The gathering provokes both unsettled family
disputes and the family’s conflicts with the
tenant farmers. For Faik, however, the major
threat to his community and land is the nomads.

Ahmet is a single man who describes himself
as ‘close to women, but far from love’. For this
summer vacation, he comes to his usual place,
the Blue Lodge, a cosy guesthouse by the sea.
Here he will meet two attractive women, Bahar
and Esra, who are also best friends.
Esra takes an instant liking to Ahmet, but when
Ahmet meets Bahar, a piano virtuoso who plays
at a choice venue in the neighbourhood, feelings
begin to stir deep in his heart.
The owners of the Blue Lodge, Kerim and
Zeynep, are going through a critical stage in
their marriage. So are Halil and Erica, a couple
from Germany.
Nezih Ünen graduated
as an engineer from
Boğaziçi University.
He has always been
interested in music,
photography, writing
and drama. In his 20-year music career as a
composer, he has produced film music as well as

to make his first film, the documentary Lost Songs
of Anatolia, which became something of a cult film
because of its unique style. The film was shown at
many international film festivals including Istanbul,
Thessaloniki and Montpellier. Blue Lodge is his first

The ‘village guard’ system has played an
important part in the escalation of the Kurdish
problem in southeast Turkey and caused
heartrending suffering among the local people.
This film aims to reveal the evils of the system
in which village guards, who are paid and armed
by the government, have been terrorizing the
people by exploiting the power the state has
conferred. lt deals with the steady increase in
the killing of women, the outcome of prevailing
militarism and a male-dominated social system
which controls women and female labour. Dirt
sets out to expose the ‘dirty’ mechanism behind
the village guard system and the murder of
women.

Tired of the noise and pollution of large cities,
a group of environmental intellectuals abandon
the big city and return to nature. They build a
brand new village with shabby old stone houses
on a block of land they purchase. They name
their new village ‘Ecovillage’. Their intention
here is to enjoy life through ecological tourism,
organic farming, and arts and culture. At first
they coexist happily with the village folk from
whom they purchased the land and old stone
houses. In fact, there’s even attraction between
the leading intellectual character, Camille, and
Ali, the village headman. She is a European
character who settled in Turkey after years of
working for environmental organizations like
Greenpeace. Meanwhile, the village headman Ali
has never left his village and has no education
- a typical village person. The emotional bond
between them develops in a humorous yet
strange manner.

anthropology at a university in Istanbul. To

warden of a crumbling church in the city, with
Gülizar, whose husband has gone missing while

‘Hicaz’ translates literally as ‘barrier’ or
‘obstacle’.
Hicaz is the first film of the trilogy, Hicaz,
Saba and Nihavend. It tells the story of
various characters suffering from physical or
psychological complaints… Their complaints
are as much modern-age diseases as they
are old as human history: loneliness, despair,
disaffection and, perhaps most importantly, lack
of communication…
The film is made up of five different stories. Each
story revolves around a different struggle and,
just as in the world we live in, each character
impinges upon the other, consciously or
unconsciously.

Patient conservationists will feast on this
slowpaced, contemplative mountain hike made
by 56-year-old Muzaffer Özdemir, best known
as the lead in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s award-winning
Distant. With barely a sliver of a plot to hold it
together, this stunning collection of aweinspiring
landscapes combines with images of modern
intrusions into the heart of nature, all of it
backed by brief dialogues and spells of narration,
for what would be best described as a litany for
a self- destructive age. An ode to nature and
an insistent indictment of those who destroy it
arbitrarily. Home is an ideal choice for festival
exposure, screened at the Adana Film Festival
and already on its way to the Tokyo competition
next month, this debut shows a keen eye for
visuals combined with a toned-down elegiac
mood that may not be sufficient for mass
audiences, but should draw the attention of art
cinemas. (…)

in 1980. He made his
first short film with his Super 8mm camera in 1975.

The town of Çayırbağı in Trabzon province
suffers from frequent fires, but is without a fire
truck. When no support is forthcoming from
the twin towns declared by the local mayor, he
approaches the mayor of Diyarbakir for help
when the two meet at an official function.
The answer he receives is positive. One of
the fire trucks surplus to Diyarbakir’s needs
is cleaned up, painted and made ready to be
sent to Trabzon. A municipal worker by the
name of Kosman is delegated to drive the fire
truck from Diyarbakir to Trabzon. Kosman, a
likeable Black Sea nationalist of around 30, has
never met a Kurd in his life, nor ever set foot
outside his hometown. Worse still, his thoughts
about the south-east of the country are based
entirely on hearsay. So the idea of the fire truck
coming from Diyarbakir is not to his liking, and
he puts his foot down, refusing to go. In the
end, however, Kosman is persuaded to set off
from Trabzon, and one morning he arrives in
Diyarbakir, seeing the city for the first time.

‘Unless he is ruthless with himself, a wise man
can have no pride.’
Muharrem pressgangs his old friends into inviting
him to dinner, no matter that he hates and is
hated by them. The dinner starts off with a few
harmless gibes and trivial shows of bravado; but
as time wears on and heads become fuddled,
the conversation progresses steadily into the
inglorious past. Old grievances come tumbling
out into an ugly showdown.
As the night becomes charged with tears, anger
and regret, the outrage spills onto the dark
streets, into sleazy hotel rooms. Although they’re
in league and he’s on his own, Muharrem has
made up his mind. Either the filth is cleaned up

A massive explosion rips through a busy street

from Turkey to London and Washington, DC. A

The explosion is just the beginning. “Labyrinth”

devastating attack that will plunge Turkey, the
only democratic Muslim country in the region,

The ordinary women of an ordinary
neighbourhood have never been so dangerous!
Life will never again be the same for the women
who knock on the door of their new neighbour,
Eylem, a psychologist who has just been
dumped by her fiancé. Nor for the men who
make their lives hell... Füsun, the hairdresser,
Gülnur, a resigned victim of daily beatings from
her husband, Vartanuş, a tireless carer to her
bedridden father, and Goncagül, the frustrated
mistress and would-be wife of her mafioso
lover, band together around Eylem, perhaps
to be joined by all the country’s women. The
adventure of these characters and their crusade
against all forms of violence comes wrapped in a
pink scarf!

The film opens with one of the great milestones
of the 20th century... Kemal, a university student
of around 20, hears news of the fall of ‘socialism’
on a tiny radio in the shambles of his shared
student flat. Before his eyes, a world view he
has newly espoused, that has shaped his value
system, is being destroyed by the people who
live within that very system. Despite the debacle
unfolding on their doorstep, the revolutionary
organization Kemal belongs to continues
resolutely with its struggle in universities and
labour circles, defying all kinds of police and
state oppression. If Kemal’s political struggle
is consuming, so too is his emotional world.
He nurses a platonic love for Leyla, a political
comrade, his feelings so intense that they
sometimes overtake his revolutionary duties.
When his closest friend and comrade Abidin is
killed under police torture, Kemal is recruited to
the armed wing of the organization by Pala, the
local man in charge. As such, he is now illegal.

Ozan is a 10-year old boy living in a small
coastal town on the Aegean. His friends make
fun of him, calling him an ‘infidel’ because
his grandfather Mehmet is an immigrant from
Crete. Ozan is afraid of being isolated. He gets
angry at his family, especially his grandfather,
and stubbornly challenges them, insisting, “We
are Turks”. Mehmet Bey, Ozan’s grandfather, is
a respected shopkeeper in the community. He
takes the people of the town under his wing,
and helps them with their problems. Mehmet
Bey is known for his tolerance and his grandson’s
attitude not only has him worried but grieves
him as well. Mehmet Bey and his family were
torn from their land and forced to migrate from
Crete during the population exchange when he
was just seven years old. Mehmet Bey’s greatest
desire is to see the land of his birth before he
dies. My Grandfather’s People describes the
spectacular transformation of a family and their
country through the eyes of a 10-year old child
and his grandfather living in a small town.

The story opens with a lavish wedding ceremony
in rural Anatolia. A middle-aged groom with a
large moustache and his bride, covered in a red
bridal veil; guests dancing around them and
guns fired into the air: an extravagant wedding
ceremony is being held with two bands of
drums and horns. At the end of the celebrations,
which last until midnight, the bride is led
ceremoniously to the bridal chamber. The bride
and her sister-in-law are then left alone in the
room, and the sister-in-law gives the bride a
final briefing on nuptial customs. From now on,
the camera remains inside the bridal chamber.
With her face draped in a red veil, the bride sits
waiting for the groom, reacting oddly to the
noises she hears outside.

Süha has an accident. When he regains
consciousness, he seeks help in the nearest
village. All the inhabitants are gathered in the
cem evi, the place of worship for the alevi
muslims. Süha looks at the gathering through a
window. As the ritual goes on, four men come in
carrying a coffin. Ali Rıza stands up and asks for
a religious burial for his son Ismail. “Impossible”,
answers the leader of the ceremony, “he
committed” suicide. Ismail, explains that Ali
Rıza was training to become a perfect person,
the ideal aim of the religious path for the alevis.
Disappointed by the answers given by his elders,
he cut himself out and had visions. He didn’t
stand being taken for insane. While observing,
Süha remembers his own intricate story as a left
activist, through jail and a lost love. As the coffin
is ordered out of the cem evi, it falls down.
Süha sees himself inside it and runs to his car
shouting: “I’m not dead”. He tumbles. A truck
driver who looks like Ismail helps him up saying:
“You and I still have a long way to go”

We are all as similar to, and different from each
other as the seeds of a pomegranate. Yet we are
still a collective whole, just like the pomegranate
itself. It’s the crust of faith that keeps us
together, the faith that we have for each other.
But what if the crust cracks? What if we begin
to doubt everything and our trust in each other?
What if we lose our sense of justice? What if we
seek our own justice? Won’t the seeds scatter
everywhere like a cracked pomegranate?
The Pomegranate tells the story of a woman
seeking her own justice. The Pomegranate
questions the justice of four people with
different beliefs in a house, in half a day and in
their own realms of faith.

male relationships in Yusuf’s circumscribed
life. His wife, Aslı, is hospitalized with a lung
complaint. The introvert woman slides into a
state of gloom, suspecting she has cancer. Her

Yusuf and Aslı meet a young woman, Elena,
in hospital. Elena seems destined to struggle

the result of violence inflicted by the man she
lives with. She spends two days in hospital with
Aslı, but then contacts Yusuf again a few days
later. Elena is in grave trouble and has nobody
else to turn to except Yusuf. Yusuf helps her.
Having gone through many painful experiences,

older brother Yılmaz, will he be able to become a
snake hunter like him? Yılmaz is a snake hunter.
Following in his father, Hacı Halil’s footsteps,
will he be able to become a smuggler like him?
Hacı Halil: There are no more paths open to him.
They’ve already cost him one of his legs. But he’s
looking for that one last path to take, that one
last journey. Will he be able to make it through?
The script depicts these three country men:
the child, the teenager and the elder. They all
feel lonely and are all looking for love, or for a
woman to fill the emptiness inside them. They
struggle to make their lives complete. But nature
isn’t the only harsh aspect of this place: life, too,
can be brutal on these people who dream little
dreams in a little place.

Şêristan comes down with a serious illness. Her
last request is to be buried in the village where
she was born. The thought of returning to the
village frightens Mîrza, but out of respect for
Şêristan, he agrees to her wish. Hêvî opposes the
idea from the beginning. As he sees it, there’s
no point in going back to be buried in the soil of
‘that place’. Mîrza is equally obstinate and insists
on Hêvî coming. As a result, Mîrza, Şêristan
and Hêvî set off by train. Şêristan conceals her
identity as an Armenian as well as her first
marriage. She dreams about her village and her
old husband, Arto. Her greatest wish is to get
back to her village and be buried there. Before
reaching Diyarbakır station, Sêristan dies. Mîrza
and Hêvî leave the train in Diyarbakır with her
body and continue by bus to Batman.

Mehmet has just moved to a new house.
Amongst his belongings he has made a discovery:
a tape he recorded as a child to send to his
father, who was then working abroad. As
Mehmet listens to the tape, memories come
flooding back. He’s concerned about his mother,
Basê, living on her own in the small town of
Elbistan. Mehmet travels there to try to convince
his mother to move in with him and his wife
in Diyarbakır. In Elbistan Mehmet finds that
there’s only one thing on his mother’s mind: his
eldest brother, Hasan. Her only expectation is
that Hasan will return home and start a family.
Basê believes that the silent phone calls she has
been receiving are from him. Mehmet works in
his mother’s garden, takes care of long overdue
repairs and slowly enters his mother’s world. At
the same time he searches for the tapes which
he’s sure his father sent his mother. Basê tries to
persuade him that there are no tapes. Mehmet
doesn’t believe his mother and carries on the
search; a search that leads him to uncover his
family’s secrets.

Her small and safe life is shaken to the core
when Sevda learns that her husband Cezmi is
having an affair with Zuhal who is his colleague
at the hospital. The “other woman” Zuhal got
divorced a couple of years ago and is now a
single mother of a sick, 10-year-old boy. Like all
single women, she tries very hard to stand alone,
with many things taking up her time and energy.
Her office affair with Cezmi isn’t only about an
unexpected joy and sexual relief to her life, but
it’s more importantly about an expectation of
safety. Sevda, going along with her mother’s
advice, keeps up the day to day flow of their
home-life like clockwork, keeping Cezmi in the
dark even while she sets out to find Zuhal using
all the fastidiousness being a housewife has
taught her. However in a short while she realises
that Cezmi’s passion for Zuhal runs deep. With
the return of Mustafa, Zuhal’s ex-husband, who
wishes to win back his wife, the delicate balance
between the three of them is completely upset
and they are all pulled towards a violent end.

Where the Fire Burns is a road story. Ayşe

urgent operation. Her family is hugely supportive
at first, but during the operation the girl is found

Her father Osman, who takes on the task of
killing her, sets off on a trip with Ayşe. While
Osman is plotting to poison his daughter, Ayşe is
blindly unaware of his intent. This trip by father

Zenne Dancer is the contemporary story of three
unlikely friends: Ahmet, a hyper-masculine gay
(bear), Can, a male belly dancer (Zenne), and
Daniel, a German photojournalist. The three find
themselves up against systemic, institutionalized
and culturally embedded homophobia which
leads ultimately to the tragic death of Ahmet
at the hands of his own father. Through their
dynamic friendship and the events that unfold
around them, the film explores layers of
intolerance along masculine/feminine, east/
west and traditional/modern lines in Istanbul,
a city that is itself geographically, culturally
and historically at the very crossroads of those
divides.
One day, Ahmet and Can meet Daniel, a German
photojournalist newly arrived in Istanbul who’s
working on a coffee-table book about the city.
The three of them forge a friendship and Daniel
and Ahmet grow even closer as a relationship
begins to blossom between them.

Deniz is a high-school girl growing up in a small
town on the west coast of Turkey. She and her
close friends, Esra and Gül, dream of leaving the
town one day to go to university in a big city. All
that stands in their way is the dreaded university
entrance exam, which they will have to take in
two years. The school year begins; Deniz’s father
starts a new company as he does every two
years; her mother organizes a local fundraising
event for Deniz’s sister’s school. One day, an
accident happens during a blackout: the valuable
picture that Deniz needs to deliver safely for
the fundraiser catches fire. In the aftermath
of this mishap, she slowly drifts away from her
friends and finds herself becoming infatuated
with two men: her school counselor and a fellow
student. As if the troubles and upheavals of
being a teenager weren’t enough on their own,
a major gas outage across Turkey brings life to
a standstill. All of a sudden, Deniz is no longer
alone in navigating the stormy waters of the
outside world.

Circle is the story of ordinary people in the
characters of Feramuz, Arif and Betül, who
conjure up interesting solutions to extraordinary
situations and obstacles generated by the
system. When the system we live in throws
up weird and incomprehensible obstacles
and regulations, we tend to strive to adapt to
the system instead of trying to change it. We
strive to survive by creating even more weird
and extraordinary solutions. In a way, this
attitude is hope for hopelessness, a solution
for the insoluble. A character of this nature
has always come to be worth telling. As in the
logical argument of philosopher St Augustine
“Credo quia absurdum” (I believe it because
it is absurd), the absurd has the power to be
irrefutable and indestructible. The seemingly
isolated stories about each character that tell
of their lives, needs, goals, and methods in fact
take us to the picture of a system that makes
people think and do the extraordinary.

In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in eastern
Turkey, Berfé, an old woman, and Jiyan, her
young granddaughter, are troubled when the
only man of the household, Temo, the son of
one and father of the other, is arrested and
taken into custody by the local gendarmerie.
The commanding officer has received word that
the villagers are hiding guns. It is announced
that all the men of the village will be kept in
custody until their families submit and hand
over the guns they are hiding. But the problem
is there are no guns, at least to the knowledge
of these two blameless women. Despairing and
on their own, Berfé and Jiyan are faced with a
long journey in search of a gun that they can
exchange for their beloved Temo. But how can
their innocence and naivety find a way out in
a system that threatens, eventually, to drag
them into the sullied world of an interminable
conflict?

her obligatory marriage to waiter Şero (45) and

of buying a house like the ones she cleans and,
with no security or benefits in her job, saves
obsessively to this end. Ahu Öztürk (Istanbul,

Çeşme, a summer resort on Turkey’s Aegan
coast. While it bustles with tourists during the
summer months, the town is calm and deserted
in May. This is when two sisters from Istanbul,
Lale and Yasemin, both in their early 30s,
have to come to Çeşme, their early childhood
playground. After five years of minimal
communication, the two women find themselves
in their late grandmother’s summer cottage
once again. Initially, everything seems fine: the
weather is beautiful, the sea pristine, and the
town basking in off-season tranquillity … But the
usual dynamics of sibling comfort and irritability
are at play. Little by little, questions are raised:
Why are these two women really here? And why
do they gradually become so emotionally vicious
towards each other? Once the burden of a
devastating secret is revealed, it’s up to them to
decide whether this will bring them closer than
ever before or push them apart forever.

Jin is a 17 years old girl. The film opens with
Jin running away in the mountains. She spends
solitary days and nights in the mountains and
forests. Her aim is to get to a big city and her
dreams are of wider worlds previously unknown
to her. She has chosen to rebel in order to see,
read, learn, love and laugh; in short, in order
to live. Her body small but sturdy, and her
willpower fresh but strong, she manages to
create a space for herself in the wilderness. To
make a start somewhere, she descends into the
city only to find herself faced with a series of
difficult and distressing incidents. She can’t fit in
and feels forced to run away from everything and
everyone… Her soul has been heavily wounded
much like her body. In utter despair, she returns
to her solitary existence in the mountains. Jin
searches for a way to cling to life.

Karnaval is a humorous love story about a doorto-door salesman and a cake maker ‘finding each
other’ thanks to a carpet cleaner when both are
drifting after respective family blows.
In the outskirts of Izmir, Alis (36) has been living
in his car since getting kicked out of home by
his father. In the meantime, though, he has been
applying for jobs which his mother marks for
him in the newspaper. He eventually finds a job
as a door-to-door salesman for Karnaval carpet
cleaners, which leads him into an extraordinary
liaison. Demet (33) has been looking after her
father since her mother passed away. While
she makes cakes in her father’s wedding hall,
she dreams of moving to Istanbul one day and
opening her own patisserie shop. None of her
expectations in life has materialized until she
meets Alis.

Toprak is the middle child of a family who have
gone to Çukurova as seasonal workers. Although
he’s six, Toprak has yet to start school and yet
to be issued with an identity card. His 15-yearold elder sister is forced by her father to get
engaged to a man her grandfather’s age in
exchange for a hefty bride price. Zeliha, Toprak’s
younger sister, loses her sight after contracting
polio. All the family except Zeliha work as
labourers and try to make enough money to
last for the rest of the year. However, when the
children’s grandmother dies, the family have
to take Zeliha with them to the fields. Toprak
is very protective of his blind sister and can`t
bear her getting upset; he almost plays the role
of a father to her. He has a different way of
describing the family’s problems to her. In his
fairytale world, the family must go to the land of
the Cotton King and make Zeliha a sea of cotton
in order to save the sick princess.

This film is based on a true story about a man
who hid out in a mine after committing murder.
Zeynep, the leading female protagonist, is the
common denominator of the story, in which the
director explores the psychologies of two men:
Cemal, who regrets having committed murder,
and Cumali, who is pursuing the murderer with
the intention of killing him, but worries about
doing so. The woman, Zeynep, is the dominant
figure in the story. Zeynep is currently married
to Cemal, but some years earlier she had a
passionate affair with Cumali, who was married
and had a child. The story is told through
flashbacks and hallucinations, mirroring the
psychological states of the characters in the
film. Past and present, reality and illusion are
interwoven. As time goes on, Cemal’s fears are
transformed into courage. He pleads with his
hunter, Cumali, to kill him; but his pursuer no
longer dares to do so. Erden Kıral (Gölcük,
1942) studied ceramics
at the Istanbul Academy
of Arts. He has written
on film for newspapers
and magazines. He
has made nine award-winning feature films. On
Fertile Lands, won the Best European Film Award
in Strasbourg; A Season in Hakkari, received the
Silver Bear, FIPRESCI, CICAE and Otto Dibelius
Awards at Berlin; The Mirror was nominated one
of the ‘10 Best Films of All Times’ by the European
magazine. He has been a member of ‘Berlin
Akademie der Künste’ since 1984. Kıral draws on
his cultural heritage and sensitively conveys the
sociopolitical conditions of his country without
falling into the trap of exoticism. He succeeds in
addressing an international audience thanks to the
honesty of his perspective, the universality of his
concerns, and the artistic integrity of his films.

Ankara, 1980... Elif, the seven-year-old daughter
of provincial parents, is determined not to
grow up. Hopeless at school, Elif buys a red
ribbon with her pocket money and pins it to
her pinafore on the way home in attempt to
convince her family that she, too, has learned

A triangular love story transposed on a major
environmental conflict which concerns the
whole Mediterranean basin: the near extinction
of the tuna fish over-caught for the Japanese
sushi market. Sevda is a modern young girl
from Istanbul, she comes to an isolated fishing
village to accompany her sick father, a solitary
writer supporting small fishermen against big
fishing companies. Two young men fall in love
with her, Ertan, the son of a tuna company’s
owner, and Levent, a simple villager employed
as a diver in the company’s tuna cages. A film
against prejudices and consumerism, in defense
of simple joys that nature offers, with an
environmentalist approach to the problems of
globalization.

As their friendship grows, they start taking Nigar

Where does all the dust, the grime and dirt
in our homes go? In Metin’s magical hands, it
disappears into thin air.
Metin (35) is Istanbul’s number one male day
laborer and one of a kind. Over years of practice
he has built up a special bond with his clients.
Cleaning their houses means not just working,
but also caring for them. And since he does his
job with such zest and joy, it’s no surprise that
he’s known as the best.
Metin is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He has
an awe-inspiring energy that takes everyone
by surprise. He doesn’t talk much, he doesn’t
gossip. His life is so well organized that he
doesn’t have time to stop and think. The
portable radio clipped to his waist is like his
charger, and he keeps it on all the time. The
radio plays mostly arabesque tunes, and Metin
sings along to the songs. To be a singer was his
biggest dream.

An Aegean seaside town in autumn in 1990s
Turkey…
Agapi, a Greek woman in her 80s, was born
and brought up in the town, but then left for
Greece during the struggle. Now, however,
she returns to find her childhood house. She’s
accompanied by her granddaughter, Elpida, who
is in her 20s. Agapi’s house now belongs to Yaşar,
a young Turkish man in his 30s. Agapi is eager
to buy the house back, but Yaşar is adamantly
against selling. The old woman and the young
man are both stubborn. The three strangers
begin to share a house together. Yaşar wants to
renovate and convert the house into a boarding
house. Agapi tries to stop Yaşar renovating the
house. Elpida doesn’t understand why they’re
in that house, or for that matter, the town.
Her grandmother’s silence confuses her. As
the days go by, she grows bored of constantly
arguing with Agapi and starts to see the ordinary
fisherman Yaşar in a whole new light.

“Man is created of anxiety.”
Euripides
Life ambles on in a small Anatolian town: Cemal
is a linesman in local football matches, Yasemin
works in an egg factory, Defne sells books from
her stall in town, Doctor İrfan is busy with his
patients… This is a town of two suns and three
full moons. Cemal, who can see through walls,
despairs of life when troubles overtake him.
In his effort to deal with it all, he looks for an
answer in Yasemin, who can move entire objects
with the touch of her fingertips. But Defne, who
can stop time, is destined to muddle things up
before long. The invisible primary school teacher,
meanwhile, is trying to ease Cemal’s concerns.
But then Yasemin’s immortal boss does a bunch
of things that undermine the teacher’s advice.

International Filmmor Women’s Film Festival on Wheels
9 March-8 April 2012 – Istanbul, Çanakkale, Hakkari, Van
Filmmor Women’s Film Festival is held every year in Istanbul
and goes on to tour different cities at the invitation and
with the support of other women’s organizations. Festival
screenings are categorized into sections carrying themes
like ‘violence against women’, ‘honour’ and ‘body’. The
programme also focuses on the place of women’s cinema
and includes collective presentations, Q&A sessions, panel
discussions and workshops. Intentionally, there is no
competition section, a decision based on the argument that
women don’t need to compete with each other, whereas they
do need to stick together.
