Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi Derneğinin (International Association for the
History of Religions: IAHR) düzenlediği XIX. Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi Kongresi 24–
30 Mart 2005 tarihleri arasında Japonya’nın başkenti Tokyo’da gerçekleşti.1
IAHR’nin ya da IASHR’nin (International Association for the Study of History of
Religions)2 1950 yılında kurulduğu düşünülürse, bu kongre IAHR’nin bilfiil düzenlediği XII. uluslararası kongredir. IAHR’nin kuruluşundan önce düzenlenen uluslararası Dinler Tarihi kongreleri şunlardır: I. kongre: Paris (Fransa) 1900,3 II. kongre:
Basel (İsviçre) 1904,4 III. kongre: Oxford (İngiltere) 1908,5 IV. kongre: Leiden

1950 tarihinde gerçekleşen Amsterdam kongresi esnasında kurulan Dinler Tarihi Derneğinin adı IASHR (International Association for the Study of History of Religions: Uluslararası
Dinler Tarihi İncelemeleri Derneği) olarak kararlaştırılmıştır. 1955 tarihinde düzenlenen bir
sonraki Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi Kongresinde, dernek başkanı olan İtalyan Dinler Tarihçisi
Raffaele Pettazzoni’nin teklifi üzerine İngilizce dil yapısına daha uygun olduğu düşüncesiyle
dernek adının International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) şekline dönüştürülmesi kabul edilmiştir (C. J. Bleeker, “Important Decisions Taken at the Congress in
Rome”, Numen, 2/3 (Eylül 1955), s. 236).

24 Mart 2005 Çarşamba günü başlayarak 31 Mart Perşembe günü sona eren
Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi kongresinin bu yılki ana konusu: “Din: Çatışma ve Barış”tır. Alt konular ise “Savaş ve Barışın Dinî Boyutları”, “Teknoloji, Hayat ve Ölüm”,
“Global Dinler ve Mahallî Kültürler”, “Sınırlar ve Tecritler”, “Din İncelemesinde Metot ve Teori”dir. Bu konuları tartışmak ve bu konular hakkında bilgi alışverişinde
bulunmak üzere 66 ülkeden 1650 bilim adamı kongreye katıldı, ki bunların 900’e
yakını Japonya’dandı. 11 Eylül 2001 olaylarının akabinde düzenlenen bu ilk uluslararası Dinler Tarihi kongresinin ana konusunun dinlerin barış ve çatışma sürecindeki
rolü üzerine olması hiç de sürpriz olmadı. Zaten ilk gün, açılış seremonisinden sonra
“Dinler ve Medeniyetler Arası Diyalog” konulu konferansta sunulan tebliğler, medeniyetler arası diyalogun gerekliliği ve dinin bu diyalog içerisinde ne gibi bir rol oynayabileceği konusu üzerinde durdu. Japonya’daki United Nations University’nin
rektörü olan Hans van Ginkel’in sunduğu ilk bildirinin konusu “Dinler ve Medeniyetler arası Diyalog: Bir Anlama Kültürü İnşa Etmek” idi. Burada van Ginkel, vurgunun
din üzerinde değil de diyalog üzerinde yapılması ve anlamlı diyalogun yaygınlaştırılması gerektiğini ifade etti. Van Ginkel’e göre diyalogun tanımı başkalarına kendi
fikirlerini dayatmak değil, başkalarının fikirlerini anlamak olmalıdır. Fakat bu tür bir
diyaloga giren tarafların başka medeniyetleri anlamaya çalışmadan önce kendi medeniyetlerini iyi anlamaları gerekmektedir. Van Ginkel’in belirttiği diğer bir önemli
husus da kendini değiştirmeye hazır olmayanların diyaloga hazır olmalarının mümkün olmadığı noktasındadır. 41

Yedi gün süren bu kongrenin ikinci gününden başlamak üzere son gününe
kadar 334 panelde 1.400’den fazla bildiri sunuldu.42 Bu paneller arasında 12 tanesi
İslam’a hasredilmişti: Hangi meselelerin ele alındığı hakkında bir fikir edinmek bakımından İslam ile doğrudan ilgili olan bu panel konularını şu şekilde sıralayabiliriz:

Kippenberg’in 27 Mart Pazar günü akşamı verdiği “Gazveye hazırlık: 9/11 Saldıranlarının Manevî Kılavuzu” konulu konferans, 11 Eylül 2001 olaylarından sonra Batı
dünyasında bir kısım çevreler tarafından oluşturulmaya çalışılan yeni bir İslam imajına güzel bir örnek teşkil etmiştir. Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi Derneği başkanı Peter
Antes’in “günümüzün en önemli Alman dinler tarihçilerinden biri” olarak takdim
ettiği hemşerisi Kippenberg, 11 Eylül olaylarının İslam ile bağlantılı [related to
Islam] olduğu için bu bağlantıları [relations] bulmak gerektiği düşüncesiyle konferansına başladı. Bu sözde bağlantıları oluşturmak üzere Alman teolog, farklı yerlerde bulunan ve bu olayları tertipleyen teröristlere ait olduğu iddia edilen dört şüpheli
mektuptan hareketle tezini savunmaya çalıştı. Kippenberg’e göre bu olaylar, örneği
İslam tarihinde sıkça görülen gazvelere benzemekte, dolayısıyla da bu tür şiddet

Diğer taraftan bu kongre esnasında IAHR’nin yeni yönetim kurulu seçildi.50
2000 yılından bu yana IAHR başkanlığı yapan Peter Antes yerine eski başkan yardımcısı Rosalind I. J. Hackett seçilerek 1950 yılındaki kuruluşundan bu yana

Ülkemiz açısından bu kongre ayrı bir tarihî değere sahiptir. Zira 1994 yılında
kurulan ve 23 farklı üniversiteden 89 üyesi olan Türkiye Dinler Tarihi Derneği’nin
(TÜDTAD) 1999 yılında IAHR’ye yaptığı üyelik başvurusu, TÜDTAD başkanı
Abdurrahman Küçük ve başkan yardımcısı Mehmet Aydın’ın da hazır bulunduğu 27
Mart 2005 Pazar günü yapılan IAHR icra komitesi toplantısında kabul edildi ve bu
üyelik, kongrenin son günü olan 30 Mart 2005 Perşembe günü IAHR genel kurulunda ilan edilerek resmiyet kazanmış oldu.52 Ayrıca ulusal çapta faaliyet gösteren
TÜDTAD artık uluslararası bir kimlik kazanmış olması dolayısıyla 2006 yılında Ankara’da “Sekülerleşme ve Dinsel Yeniden Canlanış” konulu bir konferans düzenleme
işini de üstlendi.
Dünyanın birçok yerinden gelen bilim adamlarının bir araya gelerek bilgi ve
tecrübelerini paylaştığı bu kongre boyunca dikkate değer hiçbir aksaklığın meydana
gelmemesi büyük ölçüde Japon organizatörlerin bir başarısıdır. Bundan dolayı da
kongre tertip heyetini tebrik etmek gerekir. Kırk yedi sene önce yani 1958’de de
Uluslararası Dinler Tarihi Kongresi Tokyo’da gerçekleşmişti. Bu kongre hakkında
İsrailli dinler tarihçisi R. J. Z. Werblowski’nin izlenimlerini yarım asır sonra aynı yerde gerçekleşen bu kongre için de söylemek mümkündür: “Kongrenin teknik organizasyonu konusuna gelince bu hususta söylenecek tek bir şey var: mükemmeldi.”53
