MATCH PRESS KIT
Match background
FC Internazionale Milano have recovered superbly well from the shock of losing to Trabzonspor AŞ on matchday one,
winning their next three games. It means they approach the return fixture in Turkey with a four-point lead in Group B
and are just one victory away from ensuring they finish top of the pool.
• Trabzonspor, in their debut season in the UEFA Champions League group stage, followed their stunning victory at
San Siro – secured through Ondřej Čelůstka's late goal – with a 1-1 draw at home to LOSC Lille Métropole thanks to
Gustavo Colman's second-half penalty. A 3-0 defeat at PFC CSKA Moskva halted their impressive early progress, a
goalless draw in the matchday four return leaving the Turkish team third in the standings, level on points with CSKA.
• After that matchday one setback Inter began to put their campaign on the right road with a 3-2 win in Moscow,
substitute Mauro Zárate striking late after the visitors let slip a 2-0 lead. Another away win followed, Giampaolo Pazzini
scoring the only goal at Lille, and in the return against the French champions strikes in either half by Walter Samuel
and Diego Milito paved the way for a 2-1 Inter win.
Previous meetings
• The clubs crossed paths in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup first round, Trabzonspor winning 1-0 at home thanks to Tuncay
Soyak's late strike. Inter went through after a 2-0 home victory through goals from Alessandro Altobelli (48) and Fulvio
Collovati (84) after Iskender Gönen's 51st-minute dismissal.
• The teams for the first leg, played in Trabzon on 14 September 1983 were:
Trabzonspor: Şenol Güneş, Turgay Semercioğlu, Necati Özçaglayan, Kemal Serdar, Osman Denizci, Hasan Vezir
(Şenol Ustaömer 46), Güngör Sahinkaya, Tuncay Soyak (Ersoy Gökhan 88), Hasan Sengün, Levent Erköse, Iskender
Gönen.
Inter: Zenga, Bergomi, G Baresi, Pasinato (Ferri 63), Collovati, Bini, Coeck, Marini, Altobelli, Müller, Sabato.
• Current Trabzonspor coach Şenol Güneş played in goal for the Turkish team in both games.
Match background
• Inter have won only one of their three other away games in Turkey – beating Adanaspor AS 3-1 in the 1981/82 UEFA
Cup first round. They drew 0-0 at Beşiktaş JK in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round, winning 3-1 on aggregate, while
their most recent visit was a 1-0 loss at Fenerbahçe SK in the UEFA Champions League group stage in September
2007.
• Before matchday one Trabzonspor had not taken on Italian opponents since 1999 when they lost 2-1 at home to
AS Perugia in the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round. Their other home games against Serie A sides, both in the UEFA
Cup, resulted in a 2-1 defeat in the 1994/95 third round against S.S. Lazio while the 1993/94 second round meeting
with Cagliari Calcio ended 1-1.
• The two victories against Inter are Trabzonspor's only successes in eight matches against teams from Italy.
Team ties
• On 11 November a Poland team including Arkadiusz Głowacki and substitutes Adrian Mierzejewski and Paweł
Brożek lost 2-0 at home to an Italy team for who Giampaolo Pazzini and Andrea Ranocchia started and Thiago Motta
came on at half-time.
• Alanzinho and Júlio César played together in Brazil for CR Flamengo in 2003.
• Čelůstka spent six months on loan at US Città di Palermo in 2009/10, making his only appearance as a substitute
in a 3-1 win against Emiliano Viviano's Bologna FC.

Injury news
• Burak (hip) and Giray Kaçar (groin) started on Friday after shaking off injuries that ruled them out of the second leg

• Paulo Henrique returned from a knee injury suffered in training on 5 November.

MATCH PRESS KIT
• Coutinho scored his first club goal of the season as Inter recorded only their second home win in Serie A this term.
Marco Faraoni came on to make his debut in the Italian top flight.
• The fixture at Genoa CFC on 6 November, postponed because of flooding, has been rescheduled for 13 December.
• Juventus inflicted Inter's second home league defeat of the season on 29 October. The Nerazzurri only lost once at
San Siro − against AC Milan last term − in their previous three Serie A campaigns.
• Inter have shipped 17 goals in their first ten league fixtures; it took until the 18th game of last season to concede
the same amount.
• Inter lost 3-0 to SSC Napoli on 1 October, their heaviest home league defeat since a 6-0 reverse against AC Milan
in May 2001.
• Claudio Ranieri marked his first game as Inter coach with a 3-1 victory against Bologna FC on 24 September, 48
hours after replacing Gian Piero Gasperini. It was the Nerazzurri's first win of the campaign.
• Gasperini, who took over from Leonardo on 24 June, was dismissed on 21 September following the previous day's
3-1 defeat by Novara Calcio. He oversaw just four competitive fixtures – three losses and a draw.
Injury news
• Coutinho, out since 13 October with a thigh injury, made a scoring return on Saturday. The 19-year-old replaced
Wesley Sneijder in the starting XI after the Dutch international picked up a thigh muscle strain in the warm-up; an
injury that rules him out of the trip to Trabzon.
• Maicon and Yuto Nagatomo finished the Juventus game with respective thigh and calf problems. Júlio César was
ruled out for a month after picking up a thigh injury against Atalanta BC on 26 October but returned on Saturday.
• Walter Samuel and Thiago Motta (both thigh) returned on matchday four.
• Iván Córdoba, not in Inter's UEFA Champions League squad, is back in action after six months out with a knee
injury.
International duty
• Giampaolo Pazzini scored the second goal in Italy's 2-0 friendly win against Poland on 11 November.
• Luca Caldirola played every minute of Italy's 2-0 victories against Turkey and Hungary on 10 and 15 November in
2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying.
• Dejan Stanković, capped 102 times, retired from international football following Serbia's failure to reach the UEFA
EURO 2012 play-offs.
Miscellaneous
• Massimo Moratti presented Michel Platini with the Giacinto Facchetti International Prize on 14 November for his
distinguished services to football, both as a player and as UEFA President.

Trabzonspor AŞ - FC Internazionale Milano
Hüseyin Avni Aker, Trabzon
MATCH PRESS KIT
Head coach
Trabzonspor AŞ: Şenol Güneş
Date of birth: 1 June 1952
Nationality: Turkish
Playing career: Sebat Gençlik, Trabzonspor AŞ
Coaching career: Trabzonspor AŞ (four times), Boluspor, İstanbulspor, Antalyaspor, Sakaryaspor, Turkey, FC Seoul
• Born in the Black Sea port of Trabzon, Günes became a legendary figure at his local club, keeping goal in the
Trabzonspor side that won the Turkish league title six times – and the Turkish Cup three times – during his 15-year
spell from 1972-87; also won 31 caps for Turkey, captaining the team on five occasions.
• Made the natural transition from player to coach at Trabzonspor after hanging up his gloves, moving up swiftly from
assistant to head coach; rejoined the club after spells with Boluspor and İstanbulspor, leading the team from 1993 to
1997, claiming the Turkish Cup in 1995 and a league runners-up spot in 1996.
• After brief spells with Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor he was appointed Turkish national team coach in 2000 and
proved an immediate hit, leading the country not only to their first FIFA World Cup finals in 48 years but all the way
to the semi-finals, and third place, of the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan.
• Left Turkey job after failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004 and returned to Trabzonspor but reign was brief and he
later resurfaced in Korea Republic – the scene of his greatest triumph – with FC Seoul.
• Returned to Trabzonspor for the fourth time in December 2009 and led club to Turkish Cup and Super Cup triumph
the following year, Trabzonspor then finishing second in the 2010/11 Süper Lig.
FC Internazionale Milano: Claudio Ranieri
Date of birth: 20 October 1951
Nationality: Italian
Playing career: AS Roma, US Catanzaro, US Città di Palermo, Calcio Catania
Coaching career: Vigor Lamezia Calcio, Campania Puteolana, Cagliari Calcio, SSC Napoli, ACF Fiorentina, Valencia
CF (twice), Club Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, Parma FC, Juventus, AS Roma, FC Internazionale Milano
• Ranieri played just six Serie A games for hometown club Roma before moving south to spend the remainder of his
playing career with Catanzaro, Palermo and Catania.
• Coached several lower-league teams before making his name with Cagliari, leading the Sardinian club from Serie
C1 to Serie A between 1989 and 1991. Moved to Napoli, guiding the club to fourth place in the top flight in 1991/92
only to be sacked the following season.
• Earned promotion to Serie A in his first season as Fiorentina coach, and won the Coppa Italia in 1996 before heading
abroad. Won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 1999 and then coached Atlético and Chelsea, whom he led to a
second-place Premier League finish and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04.
• Replaced by José Mourinho, a brief, unsuccessful, spell back at Valencia followed before Ranieri rediscovered his
touch in saving Parma from relegation in 2007.
• That led to a stint at Juventus, who dismissed him in May 2009. Ranieri rejoined his first club, Roma, four months
later, leading the club to second place in Serie A in his first season. However, he left in February 2011 only to return
to coaching seven months later, signing a two-year contract with Inter.

• Born in Yorkshire in 1971, Martin Atkinson began his refereeing career at the age of 16, stepping up to become an
assistant referee in the English Football League in 1998.
• Two years later he was appointed to the Premier League as an assistant, a role he filled until 2003 when he became
a Football League referee, moving up to the top flight in 2005.
• Atkinson has since been the man in the middle for some high-profile domestic fixtures, not least Liverpool FC's 2-1
win against Chelsea FC in the FA Community Shield in August 2006 and Manchester City FC's 2011 FA Cup final
victory against Stoke City FC.
• Appointed to the FIFA list in 2006, Atkinson, who counts training and keeping fit among his hobbies, enjoyed his
first European experience as a referee in summer 2007, taking charge of one game in both UEFA Champions League
and UEFA Cup qualifying.
• Regularly used as a fourth official in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying, he took charge of the Moldova-Turkey game in
October 2007 and stepped up to the UEFA Champions League proper in 2008/09. The following season ended with
Atkinson working as fourth officials at the competition's final between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Bayern
München in Madrid and he took charge of the UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg between SC Braga and
SL Benfica in 2010/11.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones
• Holders FC Barcelona have avoided becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage
since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000
and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage).
• In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate
in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.
• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club
to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester
United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.
• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in
2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record
was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07
at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF
on matchday six.
• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's
1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.
• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years
and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then
sent off in the 37th minute.
• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195
days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
• Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real
Madrid.
• Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93),
Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage).
• Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including
MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC
Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva
and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group
stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98).
• Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona
scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage.
• MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by
Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96.
• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF
(2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one.
• Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva
went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on
matchday three of the same campaign.
• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for
a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04
Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus
both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
