A large range and quantity of solid, liquid and gas wastes such as ash, green liquor dreg and
rejects has been generated in pulp and paper mills. Dumping in landfills has for long been the
most widely used method for the disposal of these wastes. Green liquor dregs is the biggest
waste fraction at sulphate pulp mills. It is the insoluble, settleable materials involved in green
liquor clarification. They consist mainly of calcium carbonate, unburned carbon, a host of
sodium salts and some of heavy metals in small quantities. In this study, filtration of green
liquor dregs has been investigated to dewater the dregs solids from the mill to recover
additional soda, and reduce the discharge of these solids by using a vacuum filter system in
OYKA pulp and paper mill. In dewatering studies, dry matter content has been increased from
7-10% to 45-52%.
