Match press kit
Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid
Match background
Triumphant when the teams met on UEFA Champions League matchday one, Club Atlético de Madrid host
Galatasaray AŞ requiring only a draw to reach the knockout stage.
• While a point will suffice for Atlético, victory is essential for Cimbom to still have a chance of going through.
• Atlético got their campaign off to a successful start as Antoine Griezmann doubled his tally of UEFA Champions
League goals in a 2-0 win in Turkey on 15 September.
Previous meetings
• Galatasaray have drawn both previous away games against Atlético: 0-0 in the 1973/74 European Cup first round
and 1-1 in a 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie.
• In the most recent game, Kader Keïta cancelled out José Antonio Reyes's 23rd-minute opener.
• The lineups at the Estadio Vicente Calderón on 18 February 2010 were:
Atlético: De Gea (Asenjo 71), Valera, Forlán (Jurado 58), Raúl García, Agüero, Paulo Assunção, Ujfaluši,
Domínguez, Reyes (Salvio 86), Simão, Perea.
Galatasaray: Leo Franco, Uğur Uçar, Elano (Ayhan Akman 82), Arda Turan (Barış Özbek 90), Keïta, Neill, Mehmet
Topal, Mustafa Sarp, Hakan Balta, Servet Çetin, Caner Erkin (Dos Santos 36).
• Hakan Balta played in both legs of the tie while Sabri Sarıoğlu and Emre Çolak also remain in the Galatasaray
squad.
Match background
Atlético
• The 2014 finalists continued their sixth group stage campaign with a 2-1 home loss to SL Benfica on matchday two,
their first continental defeat at the Vicente Calderón since a 2-0 reverse against FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa
League round of 32 in February 2013.
• Atlético are taking part in the competition for the third year in a row – the first time they have achieved that feat.
• Last season they put together four successive home victories, winning their three group games in Madrid with a 10-0
aggregate score. They overcame Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 at home in the round of 16 to draw the tie 1-1 on
aggregate, winning the ensuing penalty shoot-out 3-2.
• The Rojiblancos then drew 0-0 at home to city rivals Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals before bowing out 1-0 on
aggregate.
• Atlético have lost just one of their 13 fixtures against Turkish sides, 1-0 at MKE Ankaragücü in the 1999/2000 UEFA
Cup first round second leg having won 3-0 at home.
Galatasaray
• The Turkish double winners continued their 14th group stage campaign with a 2-2 draw at FC Astana on 30
September.
• On matchday three they recorded their first European victory in 11 games with a 2-1 defeat of Benfica, who prevailed
by the same scoreline in the reverse fixture.
• In last season's group stage Galatasaray suffered successive 4-1 defeats on their travels – against Arsenal FC and
Borussia Dortmund – before a 2-0 reverse at RSC Anderlecht. They finished bottom of Group D.
• Galatasaray have not won an away UEFA Champions League match since a 3-2 success at FC Schalke 04 in the
2012/13 round of 16 second leg – their third away victory in a row and one that secured a 4-3 aggregate triumph.
Their away record since then is D2 L8.
• Cimbom's best performance came in 1988/89 when they reached the European Cup semi-finals.
• The 3-2 defeat of Real Madrid in the 2012/13 quarter-final second leg (3-5 overall) ended Galatasaray's 12-game
winless run against Spanish sides stretching back to another 3-2 success against the Merengues in the 2000/01
quarter-final (another 5-3 aggregate defeat).
• Their record against Liga opponents is W8 D6 L16 (W1 D4 L9 away).
Coach and player links
• While with SS Lazio, Diego Simeone lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in the 2001/02 first group stage.
• Galatasaray signed José Rodriguez from Atlético's city rivals Real Madrid in summer 2015.
• Wesley Sneijder (2007–09) and Hamit Altıntop (2011/12) have had spells at Real Madrid.

Match facts
Atlético
• Atletico are eight games unbeaten (W5 D3) since their matchday two loss to Benfica.
• Fernando Torres is on 99 goals in all competitions for Atlético. He has not scored since 19 September.
• Filipe Luís's first international goal helped Brazil to a 3-0 defeat of Peru in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 17
November.
• Luciano Vietto returned from appendicitis as a second-half substitute in Sunday's 1-0 win at Real Betis Balompié. He
had not played since equalising against Real Madrid on 4 October.
• José María Giménez (thigh) and Juanfran (adductor) are doubtful; Jackson Martínez (ankle) has been ruled out.
Galatasaray
• Selçuk İnan and Burak Yılmaz are serving one-game bans.
• Galatasaray parted company with Hamza Hamzaoğlu on 18 November, naming goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel
as his temporary replacement the following day.
• Taffarel watched his side squander the lead three times on Saturday in a 3-3 home draw with Antalyaspor.
• On Monday Mustafa Denizli, who had spells as coach of Galatasaray between 1987 and 1989, and from 1990 to
1992, agreed an 18-month deal to replace Hamzaoğlu. Taffarel will remain in charge against Atlético.
• Appointed last December, Hamzaoğlu guided Cimbom to the Turkish Super League title, Turkish Cup and Turkish
Super Cup. His record as Galatasaray coach was: P52 W33 D9 L10.
• Galatasaray's eight-match unbeaten run ended with defeat by Benfica on 3 November. They lost again four days
later – 4-3 at Rizespor, who struck twice in added time – their cause harmed by the 88th-minute dismissal of Umut
Bulut.
• The Turkish double winners, having led 2-0, drew 3-3 with Bosnian champions FK Sarajevo in a friendly on 14
November. Olcan Adın and Sinan Gümüş were among the scorers.
• Hamit Altıntop has resumed training, having undergone a left knee operation in early August. Lionel Carole (out
since 25 October, hamstring) is still injured.
• Emre Çolak earned his second cap, three years and one month after his first, as Turkey drew 0-0 with Greece on 17
November.

Club Atlético de Madrid - Galatasaray AŞ
Match press kit
Wednesday 25 November 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time)
Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid
Head coach
Club Atlético de Madrid: Diego Simeone
Date of birth: 28 April 1970
Nationality: Argentinian
Playing career: CA Vélez Sarsfield, AC Pisa, Sevilla FC, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Internazionale Milano, SS
Lazio, Club Atlético de Madrid, Racing Club
Coaching career: Racing Club, Club Estudiantes de la Plata, CA River Plate, CA San Lorenzo, Calcio Catania,
Racing Club, Club Atlético de Madrid
• Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18,
making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired as
Argentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later he
left for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for one
season – alongside Diego Maradona.
• Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to
add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina.
• Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia
double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second
spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.
• Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and River
Plate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointment
in December 2011 at Atlético.
• Led Atletico to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey final
triumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off FC Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league
title since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Simeone won the Supercopa de
España at the start of the next season, which ended with Atlético finishing third in the Liga.
Galatasaray AŞ: Cláudio Taffarel
Date of birth: 8 May 1966
Nationality: Brazilian
Playing career: SC Internacional, Parma FC (twice), AC Reggiana 1919, Club Atlético Mineiro, Galatasaray AŞ
Coaching career: Galatasaray AŞ (goalkeeping coach, twice), Brazil (goalkeeping coach), Galatasaray AŞ
(caretaker, twice)
• After five years in his homeland with Internacional, Taffarel moved to Parma in 1990, helping the newly promoted
club finish sixth in Serie A in his first season. Part of the squad that lifted the Coppa Italia in 1991/92 and the
European Cup Winners' Cup a year later.
• A spell at Reggiana followed in 1993/94, a campaign that ended with Taffarel saving from Franco Baresi and Daniele
Massaro in a FIFA World Cup final penalty shoot-out as Brazil overcame Italy to win the trophy for the fourth time.
• Taffarel spent the next three years back in Brazil with Atlético Mineiro before his long association with Galatasaray
began in 1998 – the same year he earned the last of his 104 caps for Brazil, with whom he also landed the Copa
América in 1989 and 1997.
• A league and cup double was secured in both 1998/99 and 1999/2000, Galatasaray also becoming the first Turkish
club to win a European trophy with a UEFA Cup triumph against Arsenal FC in the latter campaign. Further
continental success followed with victory against Real Madrid in the 2000 UEFA Super Cup.
• Hung up his gloves in 2003 after two more years at Parma, picking up the Coppa Italia once again. Returned to
Galatasaray as goalkeeping coach in 2004 under former team-mate Gheorghe Hagi, leaving a year later, but was
back in 2011; had a brief stint in interim charge in 2014, and again 12 months later after the departure of head coach
Hamza Hamzaoğlu.
