ABOUT THE FESTIVAL:
i)AIM OF THE EVENT: Since its establishment in 1996, Flying Broom aimed providing
gender equality, strenghtening women status and finding solutions to problems stemming
from inequality and expanded its work in these fields. Flying Broom International
Women’s Film Festival has the same goals and intends to widen the discussions on these
subjects by using the visual power of cinema and the wider target groups the festival
could reach. It aims to mediate for women filmmakers to meet with each other and other
women in the national and international sector and make the films produced by women
and their effort both behind and in front of the camera visible.
ii) SUMMARY OF THE REALIZATION OF THE EVENTS
Press Meeting: The press meeting was held on April 26 at 17.00 in Kuğulu Park with the
participation of cinemalovers of Ankara. The openair press meeting was event to
announce the festival programme and DJ Alper Fidan contirbuted to the festival spirit
with his “Yeşilcam Film Music”
performance.

Opening and Award Ceremony: The
opening ceremony was held on May 8 at
19.30 in Ankara State Opera and Ballet
stage with cinema and theatre artists Şenay
Gürler and Yetkin Dikinciler as hosts. Along
with the award winners, national and
international festival guests, representatives
from the cinema sector, film critics,
representatives from supporting Embassies
and institutions and cinemalovers of Ankara
attended the opening ceremony. On the
night, Flying Broom Honorary Award went to
Muhterem Nur, the Bilge Olgaç Achievement
Awards went to Alin Taşçiyan ( Film Critic and President of SİYAD-Film Critics Association
FIPRESCI-International Federation of Film Critics), Zeynep Özbatur Atakan (Producer –
Producer of Nuri Bilge Ceylan films –Founder of YapımLab), Şebnem Sönmez (Theatre
Artist), Nezahat Gündoğan (Director), Natali Yeres (Art Director), Çiçek Kahraman (Film
Editor), the Theme Award went to LİSTAG (LGBTT İstanbul Family Group) and the
documentary film Benim Çocuğum/My Child (director: Can Candan). After the award
ceremony, Ankara State Opera and Ballet Modern Dance Group performed “The Art of
Expression” and met with the audience. “Öteki Bisiklet” group supported the festival by
pedalling through the Ankara State Opera and Ballet from Kızılay at 19.00.

Film Screenings: Within the framework
of the festival, the film screenings started
on Friday May 9th at Kızılırmak Cinema
and Saturday May 10th at Goethe Institut
Ankara. Under 15 sections, 107 films in
narrative feature, documentary, short
and animation categories from 42
countries. Screenings ended after the
21.00 session on Thursday May 15th.

Workshops:
Producing Workshop for
Women: “Women Touch on
Film Producing” workshop was
realised on Friday May 9 at
10.30 in Gazi University Faculty
of Communications Conference
Hall with the moderation of
producer Zeynep Özbatur
Atakan and collaboration of
YapımLab. 30 people attended
the workshop. It lasted for 3
hours. Application for the
workshop was announced in
Flying Broom’s website.

Film Reading and Film Criticizing Workshop:
The workshop was realized on Saturday May 10th at TED
University FSA Cultural Center Bayraktar&EAG lecture
hall with the moderation of Alin Taşçiyan, film critic and
president of of SİYAD-Film Critics Association FIPRESCIInternational Federation of Film Critics, and collaboration
of SİYAD. Due to the moderator’s applied content
planning, the workshop was limited to 30 people. It

Scriptwriting Workshop: The
workshop was realised on Sunday May
11th at 14.00 in TED University FSA
Cultural Center Garanti lecture Hall with
the moderation of the scriptwriter and
producer of Ramin Matin’s film
“Kusursuzlar/ The Impeccables”. Due to
the moderator’s applied content
planning, the workshop was limited to
20 people. It lasted for 2 hours.

Buğday Association for Supporting Ecological Living “Women’s State of
Mind: 7 Activities from 7 Women” Workshops: within the framework of the
festival, different workshops for 7 days were held with the collaboration of Buğday
Association For Supporting Ecological Living with limited number of participants.

City-Space-Gender Forum: The forum was
realized on Tuesday May 13th at 18.30 in Goethe
Institute Ankara with the contributions of Ankara
University Faculty of Communications academics
Betül Yarar, Funda Şenol Cantek and Sevilay
Çelenk and with the collaboration of Solfasol
newspaper. Organizations participating the forum
as speakers: Öteki Bisiklet, Kavaklıderem
Derneği, Ka Fotoğraf Geliştirme Atölyesi, Kaos
GL, LİSTAG, Solfasol, Anadolu Kültür ve
Araştırma Derneği, Alternatif Anne, TransDer,
Dikmen Dayanışması, Uçan Süpürge(Flying
Broom), Kadın Dernekleri Federasyonu. In the forum that hosted up to 200 people from
different backgrounds like journalists, architects, urban planners, craftsmen, students,
labourers, unemployed, activists etc., Dr. Burcu Şimşek from Hacettepe University
Faculty of Communications screened a video from her workshop in Kuğulu Park on digital
storytelling.

Women of Resistance Exhibition: “Women of Resistance” exhibition, created with the
inspiration of this year’s street movement reference through the lenses of 15 different
photo artists was opened on May 10th in Goethe Institute Ankara. 150 people attended to
the opening realized by member of the parliament Aylin Nazlıaka. In the exhibition
created in collaboration with an Ankara newspaper ‘Solfasol’; a total number of 120
photos by Beyza Kural, Can Mengilibörü, Çiçek Tahaoğlu, Fahri Akşirt, Hülya Anbarlı,
Murat Yiğit Paker, Nur Yılmazlar, Özlem Mengilibörü, Selcan Kula, Sinem Babul, Şermin
Tükel, Tuğba Tekerek, Tanju Gündüzalp, Vedat Gün and Figen Öztürk were exhibited.
The preparations of the exhibition took three weeks. In the prepation period the photos
were collected; and among 200 photos 120 were selected. The selected photos were
printed as photoblocks according to the exhibition plan. To announce the exhibition two
alternative posters were prepared and printed. Different announcements were prepared
for traditional media and social media. The exhibition lasted until May 17 th in Goethe
Institute for visitors.

Subject: buluTiyatro, founded by Ebru
Nihan Celkan with the principle of “The World is our Home” in 2012, is a thetre group

that produces plays about people, hope and conscience in the interseption of personal
and social, local and universal. Fourth production of buluTiyatro Evim! Güzel Evim
focuses on the concept of ‘family’. Who do we mean when we say “family”, how do we
look at family, is it private what happens “in the family”?, if so who’s privacy? Is “our
family” different from “other families”?
Evim! Güzel Evim!, written and directed by Ebru Nihan Celkan, invites the audience to
the living room of a family of four. If family is a play, then Evim! Güzel Evim! Wrecks the
rules of the play and creates a new “playground”. Evim! Güzel Evim! tries to explain how
we say this phrase and for what it’s worth through the eyes of women.

Closing Ceremony: The Closing Ceremony
where the Young Witch Award and FIPRESCI
Prize would be given to its owners, planned
to be realized at 19.00 in Kızılırmak Cinema
on Thursday May 15th was cancelled due to
the accident happened in Soma Işıklar Mine.
The Young Witch Awards was given to Ayris
Alptekin with her role in Zeynep Dadak and
Merve Kayan’s film Mavi Dalga/The Blue
Wave. From the “Each Has A Different
Color” section, the FIPRESCI jury Sophie
Charlotte Rieger (Germany: Kino-Zeit.de, Twitch.com, Filmosophie.com), Marilena Iliesiu
(Romania: Film Magazine) ve Selin Gürel (Turkey: Milliyet Art Magazine) selected My Dog
Killer (director Mira Fornay, Slovakia, 2013) among the 12 films in the section to deem

International Women's Film Festival, appreciate the work of a
director who displays the issues of family, racism and violence
through a symbolic journey of the main character. The eternal
recurrence of the same, in this case prejudice and racism is
expressed on the level of content as well as style. With an
impressive cinematography, long shots, plan sequences and
elaborate soundtrack, the director shows her ability of cinematic
storytelling. [Thus, this year's FIPRESCI award goes to My Dog Killer

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) gathers an international jury each
year to grant one of the films screened in the Each Has a Different Color section in the

“A WITCH FROM THE NORTH: EDITH CARLMAR” SECTION
Edith Carlmar, who is known for being the first female Norwegian film director, was born
in 1911. Having met Lillebil Ibsen, who was a dancer and an actress just like herself, and
director Tancred Ibsen in Det Ny Teater in 1936 opened doors to her career in movies.
During the WW2, she did not want to work in Nazi conrolled Norwegian film industry so
she took a career break. Carlmar returned to her career in 1946. Her first movie “Døden
er et kjærtegn/ Death is a Caress” premiered in 1949 and was the first film noir in
Norwegian cinema. Edith Carlmar introduced Liv Ulmann to the cinema world with the
character ‘Gerd’ in her last movie “Ung Flukt (1959)/The Wayward Girl”. When she
passed away in 2003, at the age of 92, she was working on a screenplay about sex
workers/prostitutes. “A Witch From The North” section we started last year with Mai
Zetterling movies will bring three movies of Edith Carlmar to the festival audience this
year.
