Carnations make up around 60 percent of the cut flowers grown in Turkey and rank as the country’s
leading flower export. For some, red, white, yellow, pink or variegated carnations are a message of
heartbreak; for others, the flowers mean heartbreaking labour. Such is the case for immigrant workers
employed in the glasshouses of Kumköy-Çiçekli in the Antalya region of south Turkey... Carnation seeks
to give voice to the hardship and injustice suffered by immigrant workers by revealing the despair,
poverty, deprivation of their predicament and the lack of awareness surrounding it.

Inspired by the works of Lefebvre and Braudel, the documentary proposes to explore the texture of
an urban space. It takes the example of Fener Balat, a district in Istanbul’s old city which is currently
subject to an urban transformation project. The residential area is explored from the perspective of a
woman, who moved to Istanbul from the Black Sea in 1958, and her invisible everyday life.
Artizinconnu has worked as an assistant director, reporter, film critic and translator. She contributed a conceptual
video to an architectural project in 2005. Since 2008 she has been independently researching and producing projects
on the place of urban space and its contradiction in the construction of personal and social memory.

a ‘Meister Schüler’ from the University of the Arts (UdK). While initially a painter, she is now experimenting with a

Freedom is a notion charged with different opinions and connotations whose interpretation varies
from one person to the next. By presenting the thoughts and way of life of prison inmates, the film
helps us to question the freedom concept in our own minds. ‘Insiders’ are in prison because they were
‘outsiders’ throughout their lives. In other words, they actually fall outside the general paradigm. In a
way, they are no different from us. Who is the outsider? Us or them?
