THE MESSENGER
~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~
February 2013
Volume 59, Issue 2
We are God’s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God.
What a day for a daydream,
What a day for a daydreamin' boy.
And I'm lost in a daydream.
Daydream by Lovin’ Spoonful
It is that time of year when, like many of you, I start to daydream. With the weather in its typical
unpredictable state—moderate one day and cold another—I daydream of days when the temperature is
steady and the sun is shining. On particularly cold days, I dream of sandy beaches and good books. I am
all in favor of daydreaming. There are some who claim daydreaming is a waste of time and accuse those
who daydream of being “lollygaggers.”
In defense of lollygagging, I say it is out of our daydreams from which visions of the future come. Most
daydreams contain the phrase “What if?” What a wonderful catalyst for dreams and hopes. It is in our
DNA as Christians to ask that “What if?” question. We can dare to ask “What if the world embraced one
another as brother and sister? What if we could eliminate hunger in our lifetime? What if we could
alleviate suffering?
However, as Christians, we must respond to the “What if?” with the question “Why not?” Our response to
“What if?’ is only limited by our imaginations. There is literally nothing we cannot do. If we did not think
so, wouldn’t our churches and food pantries be empty? Wouldn’t we keep our wallets in our pockets?
Wouldn’t we turn a blind eye when we see acts of violence in the media? Too often, we hinder ourselves
by thinking we cannot change the world. Of course, we can change the world. We have the opportunity
every single day. The problem comes when we try to change the world in big and grandiose ways. We
need to start smaller. What if we change the world for one person? What if—there’s that question
again—we were to extend care and compassion to he/she who is hurting? If we can make a difference in
one person’s life and invite him/her to do the same, soon we will have a tidal wave of care and
compassion that could spread throughout the world.
I challenge you to daydream. If you are not familiar with how to do so, here are a few tips:
Find a comfortable space.
Empty your mind of all your responsibilities.
Do not allow yourself to use the words “no” or “can’t.”
Allow your mind to go wherever it wants to go with no limitations.
As a church, it is wonderful to daydream together and to dare ask the questions “What if?” and “Why not?”
I invite you to join me in daydreaming and to imagine the possibilities for Salem Church.
Blessings,
Pastor Jerry
Did You Know?
now?
Who ran the following article in the Edwardsville Intelligencer on February 8, 9, and 10,
1955: “LOST – TAKEN BY MISTAKE – Gray topcoat at Alhambra Salem Sausage Supper,
January 29. I have someone else’s coat. Please check lining of your coat pocket, you may find
bond issued in my name. Also lost 200 feet of heavy duty cable on spool on Route 140.”?
We sincerely hope Thomas Dobrinich was able to exchange the coat he took by mistake for
his own. Thanks to the coat check operated by the youth and young adults of Salem,
diners at the Sausage Supper can have someone looking after their coats and support the
youth at the same time with a donation.

“By Faith”
Faith”
(Suggested Reading: Hebrews 11)
The games we play have changed throughout our lives and continue to change. I still look fondly on the
simplest and most enduring of games. I trust the game "hide and go seek" is still played, and children still
race after lightning bugs on summer evenings. While I do not recommend this game, when I was young
the game we played involved running atop the rail of a train track, competing against another on the
opposite rail for both speed and distance. The first to touch a foot to the ground lost. In the game, no one
looked at their feet, and eyes were always surveying the rail several feet ahead, as our feet struck rightly
and rapidly the place we considered a moment ago. We trusted that what we had previously witnessed
would still be firmly in place.
How often has God brought us through in life? How many times has our heart overflowed with
thankfulness, as we were carried out of the dark valley in the loving arms of Christ? Life is certainly more
mysterious and less predictable than a rail of steel, yet the love of God is infinitely greater in strength and
adaptability than any rail of steel. Abraham was called to go to a place that God would show him—a
place unseen and unknown to Abraham. By faith, Abraham stepped out on the intangible promise of God.
In practical ways, we trust in both material and conviction to some degree. There is a general assumption
that vehicle drivers will conform to one set of rules. If you are sitting as you are reading this, did you
examine the structural soundness of the chair before sitting? Friends, I have broken chairs by sitting in
them, and I have seen many times a vehicle driver who ignores the singular set of rules that we are
required to obey. The Lord does not break His own law nor can the Lord be broken.
May joy and fellowship be yours in the journey for we are in God's hand.
Pastor John

EXHALE - YOUTH NEWS
This thing called love, It can lift you up never let you down
Take your world and turn it around, Ever since time nothing's ever been found
That's stronger than love
~ Johnny Cash
Whether you are still in school or have been married for 50 years, there seems to be this hesitancy about
a day in February. The fear of not getting the right gift for your significant other or not having a significant
other to buy the perfect present for or just simply forgetting about it all together. We get so caught up in
worrying about how to make the day perfect that we tend to ruin it, as well as miss the point.
Don’t get me wrong, I love getting candy, and watching the face of someone get a stuffed bear the size of
a 5 year old child is awesome, but we sometimes take these gifts out of context and forget that this day is
based on one main ingredient in life, love.
I can remember being terrified when I was in elementary school that at the end of our Valentine’s Day
party, I would walk up to the edge of the board where my white paper bag was taped up, look inside, and
see nothing but the inside of a white paper bag. Of course this was never the case, but this was a
legitimate fear of mine while growing up. I no longer have this worry when it comes to the thought of love.
I receive and notice it in every instance I can. In fact, I don’t even have to hunt it out anymore, I just
simply receive it. This is what this obscured day in February should be about, love. It should be a
reminder to go that extra mile, do the little out of the ordinary things for not just the people who are close
to you but to EVERYONE.
As Christians we are lucky enough to be taught infinite love, a love that never wavers or bends and
certainly one that never runs out. This should be our message. This should be our act. When
approached this way, a once terrifying day to some now becomes a day where we are reminded that
going out of our way to show and tell everyone we love them a little more then we normally do isn’t all
bad—not even a little.
Love Wins,
Nick Atkins-Harris

Spring Mission for Salem Seekers
The Spring Mission for Salem Seekers, toddler through 6th grade, is to collect non-perishable items or
money for the two local food pantries. The two local food pantries we support are the Highland Area
Christian Service Ministry’s Food Pantry in Highland and the Alhambra-Hamel Ministerial Alliance’s Bread
of Life Food Pantry in Hamel. We are encouraging the students to bring non-perishable items on Sunday
morning in addition to their offering or in place of their offering. We will place the non-perishable items
around the altar in the Gathering Room.
When the students collect 100 items, each student will receive one Bible Buck. When we collect 200
items, each student will receive five Bible Bucks. With each additional 100 items collected, each student
will receive a token of appreciation. Each dollar collected will count as one item.
We appreciate all the support we receive from the parents and families of the church. If you would like to
help the kids, please bring your items to the Gathering Room. Thank you.

Thank you for your kindness and time in
preparing and sending me a care package. I
brought it to my unit where my Airmen enjoyed it
very much. Your gift of microwave popcorn was
very much appreciated by many in the unit after
one of my Lieutenants set the timer wrong on our
microwave and burned the popcorn so badly that
we had to get a new microwave. Our new
microwave is a great improvement over the old
one. The cookies were a great treat and have
been enjoyed by everyone.
The mission of my unit is to provide intelligence
and situational awareness of events and activities
around the world to space warning crews. Our
mission is to accurately report the type of mission
launch throughout the world that would endanger
our nation or our friends. We do not have a 24
hour open dining facility on base, but our mission
requires us to have personnel on duty 24 hours a
day, so your treats were a great blessing. Thank
you once again for your kindness and generosity.
Very Respectfully,
