Founded in 1902, Lufkin Industries
has specialized in gears for industrial applications for over
100 years. Its global reputation as a manufacturer of highreliability equipment is complemented with a tradition of
rapid, responsive customer service. Since the early 1970’s, improved process technologies have
driven industry’s demands for gears capable of higher power levels, higher speeds, longer life,
and improved reliability. Lufkin has responded by developing the technologies, facilities, and
organization required to design and manufacture the new generation of high performance
industrial gear units.
In November 1998, Lufkin acquired Comélor, a company founded in 1941 and located in
Fougerolles, France. Comélor, now known as LUFKIN FRANCE, has an established reputation
in a wide range of industries as a gear manufacturer: iron and steel, metal processing, paper,
cement, sugar, rubber, material handling, refrigeration, petrochemical, power generation, oil
drilling, test benches, etc. The company is also well known for its flexible gear couplings.
LUFKIN FRANCE is now the cornerstone of Lufkin’s operations in Europe, which include complete sales and technical support, manufacturing, gear repair and field service.
ISO 9001 certification was achieved in June, 1995. Lufkin designs its products according to
Industry standards such as ISO, DIN, API and AGMA. In addition, the quality process, manufacturing
facility and products have been approved by the French nuclear industry.
LUFKIN FRANCE employs approximately 160 people and is strategically located in northeast
France near the juncture of France, Germany, and Switzerland.

Industry demands high quality products working under the most arduous conditions. For over 50 years, LUFKIN
has had a strong foothold in the field of gas, steam and combined
cycle turbines.
For instance, LUFKIN designs and manufactures special gear units with
quill shafts equipping Frame 5, Frame 6, LM6000 or other gas turbines in
the 20 to 90 MW power range.
LUFKIN inspects and tests each gear unit in accordance with customer’s
specifications and industry standards which may include the stringent API
requirements, this to deliver a quality and faultless product.
To this end, LUFKIN has installed a test stand recognized as one of the
highest in performance in the gear industry.
Thanks to its service network which is present throughout the world,
LUFKIN can perform field diagnostics and assistance in any power plant at
any time to provide quick response to its customers.

These units are often subjected to very specific operating conditions and benefit from the high
level of research and development undertaken by LUFKIN into gear drives. Some speed increaser
gear units are used on testing machines at speeds of more than 60,000 rpm where the peripheral
speed of the teeth can reach 180 mps.
LUFKIN is the engineering company most often chosen by test bench manufacturers for constructing these customized assemblies. One example is the plant built by Alstom which has been
designed to test electric motors for the TGV high speed train of the 21st century.

n the field of oil drilling, equipment manufacturers have
developed efficient and reliable operational solutions which are
designed to avoid expensive stoppages during oil extraction.
In this context, one-speed or two-speed Power Swivels have been designed which combine the functions of powering and lifting for drill string operation. This solution is
particularly interesting for directional drilling.
With its proven techniques, LUFKIN has designed and manufactured customized speed reducers
and two-speed gear drives with carburized, hardened and ground gearing and cast steel gear
cases, able to withstand very high mechanical stresses and meeting impact strength requirements at
low temperatures.
For the manufacture of these units, a special Quality Assurance program was implemented and
submitted to the DNV and LROS accredited inspection authorities.
LUFKIN is therefore able to guarantee the reliability of these components in service, despite the
adverse environment and bad weather conditions experienced on offshore drilling platforms.

LUFKIN has equipped each design engineer with the most advanced CAD station using
Pro/Engineer. Operations performed include 3D solid modeling and assembly, parametric
design and automation, mass properties, etc.
Finite element analysis is used to validate calculations of gear teeth stresses, and casing stresses
and deflections.
Rotor dynamics analysis is performed to determine damped rotor response, bearing stability, critical speeds and mode shapes.
In addition, many gear analysis and rating programs have been developed to ensure each design

t the core, the manufacturing and inspection capabilities have permitted
LUFKIN to produce gear units where capacities reach 60,000 kW, rotation
speeds up to 60,000 rpm (180 m/s) and torques of 100,000 mdaN.
To obtain this level of performance, LUFKIN has installed high precision machining, gear
tooth generating and grinding equipment.
LUFKIN has also made significant investments in inspection and control equipment to
ensure all products meet high quality levels. All rotating elements are dimensionally
inspected with a Höfler CNC gear checker. Each casing is geometrically inspected using 2
three-dimensional Poli coordinate measuring machines working in tandem, with a
space measuring capacity covering 20 m3.
LUFKIN uses skilled technicians to perform mechanical tests, metallurgical controls
and non destructive testing. All inspection results are compiled into a documentation
package for each project and can be provided as required.
In 1975, LUFKIN began establishing a Quality Assurance system which has resulted in
obtaining ISO 9001 Certification.

UFKIN’s performance testing facility allows engineers to monitor and gather data, insuring that each product meets or exceeds the most stringent industry standards and
particular specifications. To the customer, this means smooth initial start-up and years
of efficient operation.
Testing options include: Full speed no load testing to meet API 613, API 677 and AGMA standards,
dynamometer load testing and back-to-back locked torque testing for higher powered units.
LUFKIN’s test stand, driven by a 1,000 kW electric motor, is capable of delivering up to 2,000 l/min of
oil at a pressure accurate to within 0.10 bar and regulated to within ± 1°C with a filter rating of
less than or equal to 10 microns.
The data acquisition system is fully customizable to meet specific customer requirements
for sound, vibration and temperature information recorded in specified time intervals.

icro hydroelectric power stations are equipped with one or
more hydraulic turbines that can transmit several thousand
kW each.
These power plants are of primary interest to independent producers,
local communities and to companies that invest in the generation of
electricity from water power.
For low heads (less than 15 m), turbines run at low speeds requiring in
most cases the use of speed increaser units driving the generators or
alternators.
From the experience gained in this field and in close collaboration with
the turbine builders and project engineers, LUFKIN designs and manufactures speed increaser drives suited to a specific application.
Adopting this approach, LUFKIN has built all types of speed increaser
drives for Kaplan, Helix and Francis turbines with horizontal, vertical or
inclined axes.
