I try to decide where to go upon leaving the university.
My list includes Stiklai (the street which used to harbor
glass masters in the past but now is lined with shops selling
linen clothes), Kalnu Park (for those who look for a shade in
summer), Dominikonu Street filled with antique stores,
the Dominican Church, Gedimino Street (filled with shopping lovers) and St. Anne Church (which Napoleon thought

chain of peace where 2.5 million people hold hands to connect three Baltic cities. I’m not worried about how long my

şehir. Karaya ahşap bir köprü ile bağlanan bir adada
bulunan masalsı bir kalesi var. Kıyıdaki kafelerden
birinde göl, orman ve kaleyi içine alan manzaraya
karşı oturmak büyük keyif. Yelkenlilerle dolu göllerin
çevresinde yürümek de. Kışın göller donuyor, kimi zaman motosikletle buz üzerinde gezenler bile oluyor.
Trakai’de fırsatlardan biri de kale ve göllerin üzerinde
balonla uçuş. Manzara o kadar güzel ki, yeşilliklerin
içine indiğinizde uçuşun bittiğine hayıflanıyorsunuz.
Vilnius’tan ayrılırken, defterime aldığım notlardan birini okuyorum: Üniversitenin gözlemevindeki
plakada “Buradan itibaren yol yıldızlara gider” diye
yazıyor. Ben de yıldızlı bir gecede kentten ayrılırken
Užupis anayasasının 16. maddesini anımsıyorum:
“Herkes mutlu olma hakkına sahiptir.” Gülümseyerek
mırıldanıyorum: “Mutlu olma hakkınızı Vilnius’a giderek kullanın. Boşa gitmeyecek.”

a great pleasure to sit at one of the cafés on the lakeside
looking at the view that encompasses the lake, the forest
and the castle, and so is walking around the lakes where
sailboats swim. The lakes are frozen in winter and sometimes young people ride motorcycles on the ice. Another
opportunity in Trakai is riding a balloon above the castle
and lakes. The view is so beautiful that you feel sorry that
it’s over when you land on the greenery.
I read one of the scribbles on my notebook as I leave
the city: The plate at the university’s observatory reads:
“From here on, the road leads to the stars.” On a starry
night back home, this reminds me of the Article 16 on the
Uzupis Constitution: “Everyone has the right to be happy.”
I mutter to myself, smiling: “Use your right to be happy by
visiting Vilnius. It won’t go to waste.”

The main street in Trakai is named
Karaimu because this is where the
Karaims live. They speak a little
Turkish and are very excited to
serve you kybyn, a kind of pastry
with meat and cheese which is very
popular among locals. Their cuisine
includes dishes that resemble
Turkish cuisine with tiny differences in taste and cooking methods,
such as stuffed pastry, yazma
(another kind of pastry), meat and
vegetable stew, another kind of
stew called “çanak”, fish wrapped
in leaves and stuffed eggplants.
