The principal technical features of Roman sigillata wares is their red-glossy surfaces. Red slip is a thin layer of fine clay particles which could be fired to a black or red finish. Roman sigillata technique to create best red glossy surface and control of the kiln oxidizing conditions is very similar to the Greek pottery production.1 Not all, but many of the sigillata bowls and plates carry stamps of the artist sometimes accompanied by the name of the owner of the atelier.2 Rouletting, ornamental slip applications (barbotine), mold-forming and applied ornament manufacture within mold are techniques practiced in the Hellenistic East and Italy from the end of the 3rd century BC. The pottery of Roman period exhibited certain stylistic trends, some of Italian origin, others resulting from the exchange of ideas. The debate about localizing the first production center is focused on the techniques of manufacture and use of clay material that originates from the Hellenistic styles of manufacture.3 Plate 1 (Hayes 1997) 1 Hayes 1991. 2 For all the published stamps; Oxé-Comfort-Kenrick 2000. 3 Hayes 1997, 12; Hayes 1991. 4 Slane 1991;1997. 5 Tekkök-Biçken 1996, 32. 6 Zabehlicky-Schefennegger 1996;1997; Beyll 1993. 7 Zabehlicky-Scheffenegger 1996. Glossy black slip of Campana Ware production in Italy from the 4th to the 1st Centuries BC, Eastern Sigillata A and Pergamene Sigillata products in similar fashion from the middle of 2nd Century BC are antecedents to the Italian and Eastern Sigillata industry. Eastern Sigillata A and Pergamon products often illustrate the transition between black-to-red slip technique.4 From 100 BC to the 1st Century AD some of the series of Pergamon workshops use two colors efficiently as ornamentation.5 One of the first production center of terra sigillata in Italy was Arezzo, where the name Arretine is adopted for the earlier sigillata production. The production shifted to Gaul soon after. Western Sigillata products from different workshops were distributed all around the Mediterranean from the 1st Century AD. Some potters established new workshops in the east. (Tralles, Ephesus) Eastern products imitated traded forms, and adopted local ware groups into sigillata styles.6 The terminology often used to define the differences between the Eastern and Western Sigillata production series, such as; Samian or Arretine was long ago abandoned, recent studies has shown the variety of production.7 Plate 1 MAP Italian Sigillata, mostly the products of Arezzo were studied and classified by a German scholar Dragendorff in the 19th Century, he grouped standard set of table wares such as cups, bowls, saucers, plates and numbered them by form and style.8 Plate 2 Terra sigillata wares shared the table service with Roman glass cups, bowls, plates or silver ware depending on the social status of the family. Our knowledge of Roman pottery comes almost entirely from archaeological finds, especially the complete vessels found in graves, and in shipwrecks.9 References to pots are rare in literary texts and documents. The Roman writer Martial published between AD 86-103 mentioned terra sigillata cups used by the élite to take pills showing the rank of the wares compared with the silver cups normally used by the élite. Greek vessels illustrate motifs painted by an individual artist, showing his artwork on the vessel, whereas Roman pots exhibit potter's craft. Figured decoration is rarely present, it tends to be in the form of stylized individual renderings of well known motifs. The exception to this can be seen on red-gloss Arretine ware and lead glazed vessels of the time of the emperor Augustus and his successors.10 Gaulish red slip pottery bowl With relief decoration of tendrils and buds Roman, AD 40-85 AD 40-230 AD 40-80 AD 40-90 Plate 2 http://www.potsherd.uklinux.net/atlas/Class/TS.php Plate 3 The relief ornament on these vessels reflects the taste of the urban elite. The relief examples of Arretine ware inspired other contemporary crafts. Some of the stylized floral forms and figures were used as decorative elements of contemporary silver and glass. Troy benefited from the trade that reached north of the Aegean. Terra sigillata imports came from different centers of production in Italy.11 Plate 4 Among the examples are the rectangular stamped examples from the workshop of C. Vibienus Faustus of Arezzo signed CVB and C.VIBIE, another potter C.Fastidienus signed C.FAS, another example from the Lower City houses was an external rectangular stamp on a chalice from the workshop of M.Perennius Bargathes of Arezzo, and Hermaiscus of Pozzuoli with a planta pedis (foot) stamp signed HERMAI. At Troy and other sites in the Aegean after the middle of the 1st century AD eastern products were preferred to the western sigillata. Çandarlý-Pergamon and eastern Sigillata B groups dominated the whole trade in the Aegean.12 Loeschcke studied and classified ÇandarlýPergamon production series that is sometimes hardly distinguishable from Italian groups.13 Plate 4 Troy West Sanctuary chalice with relief decoration (Tekkök 2003, fig.1, n.13) Alternative styles developed after terra sigillata slipping techniques. Colour Coated Ware; a fine table ware production with smooth, shiny surface slip was often decorated with simple leaping animals as sign of hunting. The style was most used on beakers in Britain and Gaul. The decoration of the fine beakers is extremely high quality with a relief ornament made by piping clay onto the surface of the unfired vessel using a nozzle. The examples from Britain and Gaul feature elaborate decoration featuring deities, scenes of hunting, sports of the circus and arena. The technology of Roman pottery is widely studied. Today the technique used differ from the methods in antiquity. In antiquity potters were experts of clay beds, they knew how to use them efficiently. Recent ethnoarchaeological studies has shown similarity of the arrangement of the officina, efficient production season, household organization to produce wares in the Aegean.15 They occasionally imported clay but the workshops mostly situated not far from 6-10 km. from their workshop. They used clay tanks to settle clay and get rid of impurities; the best clay was the plastic one with less impurities. The slip was the same product as the clay but finer and well levigated portions of it. The research has shown that production ranged from part-time activity to fulltime employment of specialised potters. The pottery production sites held numerous separate workshops clustered together. Most of the plain forms were formed on the potter's wheel fired in specialized kilns. Molds were used multiple times and utilized until the decoration deteriorated or broken. The potter prepared his individual mold, two methods were used, either he made a new mold or he adopted a new copy from the earlier one. This procedure led multiple copies of the mold series he produced. Clay molds were used by glass workers as a prototype to glass molds. Scientific analysis to establish the chemical composition of the glossy surface of Arretine ware were not answered. Some fake copies created further debate on the authenticity of some production series.16 The studies has shown that the layer of fine clay particles fused by heat during firing, which resulted by selecting clay with certain minerals. Petrological analysis, chemical component analysis to assure the differences of clay used by different workshops is widely studied by scientists to distinguish individual production centers. Some of these questions were answered by using thin section analysis of the clay after firing, and X-ray fluorescence on clay origins.17 Some problems remain since most of the original clay beds are under modern settlements in the Mediterranean.18 Dragendorff Form 11 AD 40-55 www.potsherd.uklinux.net/atlas/types/sigillata/index.php In the West Sigillata production shifted to Gaul in the first century AD. The tradition was carried by Italian potters such as Ateius and Rasinius from Pisa and Arezzo. Gaulish production center La Graufesenque used simple relief decoration of tendrils and buds reflecting taste of first century AD. One stamped example in the British Museum in London with a stamp on the floor of the vessel reads 'OFF(icina) BASSI (et) COELI' ('from the workshop of Bassus and Coelus') illustrating the name of the workshop as OFFICINA.14 In the eastern Mediterranean, Eastern Sigillata B products of early date adopted plain forms of Italian terra sigillata featuring stamps that link the production to Italian masters as well. Plain sigillata forms were produced in glass as well. 11 Tekkök 2003, fig.1 nos.17-21; Heath-Tekkök 2006, see http://classics.uc.edu/troy/grbpottery/html/it-sig.html 12 Hayes 1981; Meyer-Schlichtmann 1988; Zelle 1992; Tekkök 2003a 13 Loeschcke 1912; Meyer-Schlichtmann 1988. 14 Oxé-Comfort-Kenrick 2000; http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/gr/g/gaulish_red_slip_pott ery_bowl.aspx 15 Tekkök 2008b; Tekkök 2003b; Tekkök 2000. 16 Porten Palange 1989. 17 Olcese 1993. 18 Tekkök 2008a; Akyol-Tekkök et.al. 2007. Potters in the Mediterranean under the rule of the Roman Empire and the influence of early Christianity continued to use the red slip technique up until the 7th Century AD.19 Workshops in North Africa adopted the shiny gloss of the earlier sigillata groups, Pergamon and Çandarlý workshops applied slip that sometimes hard to distinguish from earlier Italian Sigillata series.20 North African products from the modern area of Tunisia were exported widely throughout the Mediterranean. Applied motifs produced from molds or stamps were used on vessels. Figure choice on vessels may indicate a special function, not used as table wares but to hold drinks in the amphitheater. Doðu Terra Sigillatalar açýsýndan, Tralleis'in önemli bir üretim merkezi olduðu kabul edilir. Bunun yaný sýra, yapýlan kil analizleri de Tralleis'in üretim merkezi olduðunu desteklemektedir10. Ý.S. 150'lerden sonra üretimin giderek azaldýðý düþünülmektedir. Ýmparatorluk dönemi boyunca cam üretiminin yaygýnlaþmasý, yerel nedenlerle ekonomik hareketlerin azalmasý, hastalýk gibi etkenlerin buna neden olduðu düþünülmektedir. Tralleis'te 2006 yaz sezonunda yaptýðýmýz kazý çalýþmalarýnda olaðanüstü sayýda terra sigillatanýn ele geçmesi, mühürlü parçalarýn bulunmasý, Tralleis'in bir üretim merkezi olduðunu kanýtlamaktadýr. Bu çalýþma sonucunda Tralleis'in kil yapýsý diðer yerleþimlerde bulunan B grubu sigillatalarla birebir örtüþmüþtür8. Hayes'in yaptýðý sýnýflandýrmada ise bu grup, 14 no.lu form dahilindedir. Çünkü Tralleis'in Erken Roma Ýmp. Mitt, Beiheft 40, 1995 · V.Gassner 1997; Gassner V., Das Südtor der Tetragonos Agora Keramik und Kleifunde, Forschungen in Ephesus XIII1/1,1997 · H.Goldman 1950; Goldman H., Excavations at Gözlukule, Tarsus, Volume 1,New Jersey,1950 · J. ANTÝK SÝNTER ASTAR YAPIMINDA KULLANILAN KÝLLERÝN KALSÝNASYONUNUN ASTAR KALÝTESÝNE ETKÝLERÝ Prof. Sevim ÇÝZER, Doç. The last is a large multi-chamber whistle of my own design, similar to the one in the exhibition at the Ataturk Museum of Culture. EXPERIMENTS IN TERRA SIGILLATA Vince Pitelka, USA My talk will focus on several things. First I will discuss the use of terra sigillata in the classes and workshops I teach and in my own work, and then I will present a short survey of North American ceramic artists that use terra sigillata in interesting ways. Slab-Built Box - Ball-Clay Terra Sigillata, Soda-Fired - 2007 Blackware Bonfiring: An International Approach I have been working with terra sigillata since 1986. My first attempts were based on the recipes for terra sigillata available in ceramics books and magazines, and I was not satisfied with the results. I began a series of experiments, working with advanced students in the ceramics program at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Through our research, we discovered the work of German ceramic chemist Henrich Schumann. In the late 19th century Schumann was searching for an appropriate coating for sanitary sewer pipe, and he analyzed shards of Roman pottery, discovering that there was a micro-thin coating of fine clay particles on the surface. Schumann’s subsequent research provided valuable data that we incorporated into our own work at U-Mass. Ultimate, I wrote an extensive handout on terra sigillata that has been expanded and updated over the years to become the article on “Super-Refined Terra Sigillata” that is now on my website. At the same time that I was conducting research into terra sigillata, I was also concerned that the techniques and aesthetic of ancient and tribal clay were neglected in most art history classes and ceramics classes, and began offering workshops covering this material. Of special interest to me were the various blackware firing processes by which a terra sigillata could turn black, either by reduction of ferric iron, or by impaction of carbon particles in the surface. Bird Jar - Coil-Built - Fired in Blackware Bonfire - 2001 This series of images shows the blackware bonfiring process. The pieces have been coated with a red earthenware terra sigillata and polished by rubbing with plastic sheeting. The pots are wrapped in newspaper and placed in a raised cage constructed of rebar (steel reinforcing bar used in concrete construction) and lined with scraps of sheet metal. A mixture of dried cow manure and sawdust is interspersed among the pots. Once all the work is in the cage, the wares are covered with more sheet metal scraps, and a small fire is kindled beneath the cage. The fire is slowly built up over about 90 minutes until it is a blazing bonfire completely encompassing the cage. Once the fire has died down a bit, the same manuresawdust mix is shoveled quickly around and onto the cage, and the whole thing is immediately buried in dirt, sand, or ashes, trapping the rich carbon smoke. The resulting dirt pile is watched carefully over the next few hours to make sure that no smoke traces are escaping, which would indicate that oxygen is entering at the base of the pile. This could damage the blackware effect. After several hours, the cage is unearthed, and if all has gone well, the wares will have turned jet-black. Coil-Constructed Pots Most ancient and tribal pots are built using some variation of the coil construction method, and this has been an important process in my own work. These pots are built using the Nigerian approach to coil construction, where the coils are smeared together without using any slip or water. I have always enjoyed large pots, and derive a great deal of satisfaction from making these vessels. In my experiments with terra sigillata, I have started soda-firing some pieces to 1250 centigrade. After the bisque-firing, this jar was coated with a ball-clay terra sigillata and polished, and the orange flashing is the result of the soda-firing. I do not recommend applying terra sigillata after bisque-firing unless the piece is going to be salt-fired or soda-fired, because otherwise there will be problems with the terra sigillata flaking off. Vaporglazing processes like salt and soda tend to provide enough flux to attach the terra sigillata securely to the surface. Slab-Built Cruets - Colored Clays and Terra Sigillata Soda-Fired - 2004 Coil-Built Jar - Ball Clay Terra Sigillata - Soda-Fired - 2007 My fascination with variations in pattern and texture on ceramic surfaces has led me to experiment with colored clays, and these are just a few representative examples of large coil-built pots laminated with complex colored clay patterns. These pieces do not use any terra sigillata. Slab-Constructed Pots Fired in Aluminum-Foil Saggers My work with the blackware bonfiring process led me to experiment with aluminum-foil saggers, where the terra sigillata-coated pieces are wrapped in aluminum foil packets along with sawdust, dry eaves, and other combustible materials. The packets are tightly sealed by folding the seams repeatedly, and are placed in a gas kiln, fired to approximately 500 centigrade, and held at that temperature for four hours. It is important not to exceed that temperature, because the aluminum foil will start to decay, and oxygen will be admitted to the saggers. These slab boxes were fired in this way. The first three are coated with a red earthenware terra sigillata, while the last two feature a ball clay terra sigillata. Some pieces, including this slab-built teapot, were coated with glaze inside and terra sigillata outside, and were glaze-fired to 1060 centigrade in an electric kiln. After the glaze-firing, they were fired as described above in the foil saggers. Slab-Constructed Pots Soda-Fired to 1250 Centigrade My own work is mostly slab-constructed and soda-fired, and I like the effects I get with a terra sigillata coating soda-fired to 1250 Centigrade. The red earthenware terra sig on this boxes gives a nice dark red-brown lustrous finish, but the most successful pieces have been those coated with a ball clay terra sigillata, such as the coil pot you saw earlier, and this slab box and small teapot. I am especially interested in contrasting surfaces on the vessels I make, and these teapots and cruets feature a combination of terra-sigillata-coated surfaces on the textured areas, laminated colored clay patterns, and bare clay on the handles, spouts, and raised base. The soda firing affects the various surfaces in different ways, and produces a rich variety of effects and varying degrees of gloss. North American Artists Using Terra Sigillata in Their Work George McCauley, from Helena, Montana, uses terra sigillata on his figurative sculptures. These examples are soda-fired to 1250 centigrade. Ramsburg, from Fairbanks, Alaska, creates retroindustrial interpretations of classic pottery forms, using patterns and textures that look like industrial steel plate, and various appendages that look like steel pipe fittings, all coated with red or white terra sigillata and fired to 1060 in an electric kiln. Beth Cavener Stichter, from Columbus, Ohio, has received a great deal of attention recently for her work, which addresses cruelty to animals. Her large, aggressive, beautifullymodeled sculptures of rabbits, goats, and other animals are coated with various terra sigillatas and fired in a number of different firing processes. Anna K. Ramsburgh, "Ewer", 2006 Emmett Leader, from Northampton, Massachusetts, does architectural sculpture that addresses the destroyed synagogues visited by his ancestors in the villages of Snyatin, Slonim, and Beltsy, Poland. His terra-sigillatafinished forms are all invested with Hebrew imagery and symbolism from these sites. Some of these images depict a large installation representing the inside of a synagogue, using the same woodworking techniques and decorated with Leader’s ceramic forms. On a high shelf are photographs of some of the destroyed synagogues. Edward Eberle, from New York City creates vessels decorated with very precise, graphic, elaborate figurative imagery done in stark black terra sigillata on a white surface. The late Christine Federighi lived in south Florida and did large-scale figurative sculpture vaguely referring to ancient iconic forms, mummy bundles, and obscure figurative references from a variety of cultures. Her pieces were finished with a combination of fired ceramic materials including colored terra sigillatas and glazes. Beth Cavener, "Nowhere to go", 2003 Irina Okula, from Ipswich, MA, fires her polished terra sigillata-coated bowls to 1000 centigrade in saggers with a variety of combustible materials and chemicals, achieving a remarkable range of color. Linda Keleigh, from Neptune, NJ, also does sagger-fired vessels, but packs combustible materials against certain parts of the forms, achieving areas of jet black that contrast dramatically with adjacent colored areas and bare clay. Stephen Robison and Kathleen Guss, from North Carolina, do unique functional pottery that is wheel-thrown and altered using terracotta clay. The pieces are coated inside with lowfire glazes, outside with colored terra sigillatas, and fired to around 1150 centigrade in an electric kiln. Emmett Leader, "Trip to Snyatin", 2007 Marilyn Levine, "Anne's Jacket", 1990 The late Marilyn Levine was Canadian by birth but lived and worked in Hayward, CA. Levine became famous for her “trompe l’oeil” clay imitations of leather garments, purses, and luggage. She achieved extraordinarily-realistic leatherlike surfaces, finished with terra sigillatas. Susan Low Beer, from Ottawa, Canada, does life-size figurative sculpture that addresses the interaction of people in groups, especially people who are controlled or subjugated in a negative way. These images are of pieces in her installation “Rocksbreath,” from 2001. Bennett Bean, from Blairstown, NJ, has had a big influence on contemporary North American ceramics due to his willingness to use both fired and post-firing effects on his sculptural vessels. He starts out with a coil-built vessel form, which is coated with a white terra sigillata and sagger fired. After the firing, he works the surface with finely-painted marks and patterns using acrylic and oil paints, and often uses gold leaf internally or externally. The result is a very rich mixed-media combination of colors, patterns, and imagery. Irina Okula, "Untitled", 2003 Brian Ransome, from St. Petersburg, FL, builds elaborate clay whistles, flutes, and drums, many of which are coated with terra sigillata and soda fired to 1150 centigrade. Mary Hindman, from Eugene, OR, creates sculptural “pod” forms that hang on the wall in groupings. The pieces are coated with terra sigillata, and fired in saggers or with the horsehair raku process. They do not refer to any specific culture or tradition, but bring to mind ceremonial vessels or mummy bundles seen in various ancient and tribal cultures. This is just a short overview of recent and contemporary work that incorporates terra sigillata. Many artists are looking for surfaces that do not have the gloss and coldness of glaze, or else they seek a connection to the work of ancient and tribal cultures. Terra sigillata has proven to be an extremely versatile medium that can be used in many ways in addition to what is seen in ancient Greek and Roman wares. Stephen Robison-Kathleen Guss,"Covered Jar", 2003 Mary Hindman, "Five Pods", 2000 Brian Ransome, "Three Whistles", 1998 OAXACA A FESTIVAL OF LIFE, A FESTIVAL OF FOLK CRAFT. Charles Wissinger, USA OAXACA VALLEY Flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, bordered by the Guatemalan frontier to the south and surrounded by a barrier of forbidding mountains, indigenous Oaxacan culture evolved in relatively isolation. The first known artifacts found exhibit Olmec influence. The earliest settlements seem to have been a collection of Zapotecans who moved into the region from the south east. Over time these people coalesced into ever larger units resulting in the creation of Monte Alban a grand city state that controlled all of the Oaxacan highlands. Approx 500BC construction began with the City reaching its zenith in 500AD and being abandoned by the year 1000AD. At its peek The Central Oxacan Valley hosted a population of perhaps 35,000. Mixtec influences begin to appear around 300AD and by 900 to 1520 they and the Zapotecs ruled Oaxaca. These two cultures were primarily farmers who seemed to coexist in an uneasy alliance that periodically flared for flared into violence. This arrangement appears to have remained relative stable until the1480's when the Aztec encroached. In 1494 they sacked the ceremonial center of Mitla. Axtec dominance was short lived as they were displaced Spanish Conquistadors in 1521. Initially the Zapotecs and Mixtec hailed the Spanish as liberators. In short order the intentions of these strange new liberators became abundantly apparent. In a fevered lust for riches, Spanish conquistadors set about destroying all that was indigenous in the name of Christ and the king,. Thus religion, tradition political and social structures were supplanted by European models. Needless to say this devastation of native culture at the hands of Spanish overlords brought unimaginable hardship and despair to all of Mexico's ingenious people. Fifteen ethnic groups reside within the boarders of Oaxaca and numerous variants of indigenous Zapotec or Mixtec language are spoken in addition to Spanish. Over time indigenous cultural and religious traditions have blended with European Catholicism to produce a vibrant hybrid. Myriad annual festivals provide a stage for folk traditions and arts to animate the cultural milieu. An otherwise oppressive existence is enlivened by an inner optimism that speaks out with whimsy and satire, often in vivid color. Oaxacans celebrate life and their cultural roots with a passion that is unparalleled. A network of villages dots the central valley. Nearly all villages are known for at least one form of folk craft production. In many communities these craft forms have evolved to be the principle source of income for the habitants. This is particularly critical to this arid environment that sustains unpredictable subsistence farming at best. Few other viable means of generating income are available of making a living are available. Clay production, as practiced today, has relatively little connection to pre Spanish conquest ceramic in terms of style or tradition. The proliferation of folk craft production, as witnessed today, is a relatively recent phenomena that is tied directly to the expanding tourist trade and to limited export. The Spanish conquest affectively destroyed the character of most pre-Columbian clay making, replacing it European sensibilities. In time the incorporation of industrially manufactured utilitarian goods became increasingly integrated into daily life. This caused a further decline Oaxaca's ceramic production. Metal, glass and later plastic utilitarian items left little practical need for indigenously made clay vessels. The imagines and material presented in this lecture are limited primarily to the Central Valley of Oaxaca, its villages and the capital city. The intent is to provide a brief overview of the culture and folk traditions of a remarkable a people who continue to persevere in the face of extraordinary hardships. Far beyond merely surviving, they celebrate life! . The clay production that did survive later expanded as tourism increased. By the mid 1900's Oaxacan folk was being discovered by arts by international collectors such as Rockefellers. The southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca continue to suffer greatly at the hands of a federal government that has done little to improve the economy or living conditions within the region. Thus living and working conditions have been very slow to improve. or to promote tourism and export. Though pre Columbian styles and traditions virtually disappeared clay processing and forming techniques have changed little from pre conquest times. Clay is locally dug from the earth and processing by hand, a very labor intensive process that is often a carried out as a family activity. Clay forming is limited to the most basic techniques as potters' wheels, moulds or other labor saving devices are none existent. Firing processes have changed little since ancient times. Greenware pieces are once fired in kilns made of local adobe brick and clay. These are generally cylinder shaped and set completely above ground, or are partially buried, or set completely under ground with the top of the kiln being flush with the ground surface. The most renowned pottery produced in Oaxaca is Barro Negro (black pottery) originated in the Dona Rosa Studio in the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec. This work is hand made, produced without the aid of a potter's wheel or any other modern processing equipment. Clay is dug, wet to a liquid state, screened and poured into drying beds where nature takes its course. Upon drying to a usable consistency it is wedged and mad ready for the forming process. The round jar forms for which the family is famous are begun by taking a ball of clay holding it in one hand and punching out a cavity in the ball and stretching it down the arm to open and thin the clay. This is then placed on the flat side of one of two discs each with a flat and a concave surface. The two discs are set on the earthen floor, The first one flat side down and the second on top of it, flat side up. The top disc with the clay is then rotated on the bottom disc as the potter shapes the clay. Feet are often used to hold the discs in place thus keeping the piece on center as it is rotated and the vessel shaped. In this manner the clay is blown out and up into a graceful bulbous form. Larger forms are made in the same way with the addition of coils to increase the pots size. In this fashion quite large elegant vessels are created. Antonio Garcia, a meat market worker by trade, began working in clay, as a pastime, a quarter century ago. The village of San Antonio Ocotlan, is well known for numerous forms of folk craft production and Mr. Garcia has freely incorporated many area influences into his work. Over time he has developed his own individual style and he is now revered as one of Mexico's master folk artisans. In particular he has been recognized for his large-scale mermaids and later other monumental figures. With age he has become increasingly hard of seeing. Now other members of his family assist with much of the work. Mr. Garcia roughs out the basic forms and his grand daughters add the detailed finishing. Though occasionally polychrome pieces are produced most work is characteristically natural clay with no added surface treatment other then the vagaries of wood firing. Located in the town of Ocatlan de Morelos, the Aguilar family caries on a clay tradition bequeathed to them by their mother Dona Isaura who gained world renown for her whimsical figurative polychrome and raw clay pieces. Four daughters Guillermina, Josefina, Irene, and Conception Aguilar have assumed the mantel. With the death of there mother in 1968 they all found their own unique niches and continue the family legacy. Other members of the extended family have joined in and now four generations of Aguilars busily work in clay. The village of Santa Maria Atzompa situated on the outskirts of Oaxaca City boasts many fine clay artisans and is a major pottery-producing in the state. Clay working has continued on this site since the time of the Zapotecs. Poor soil quality, no irrigation and frequent drought made agriculture too unstable to support a population. Thus pottery- production emerged as the primary means of community support. Atzompa lives and breaths clay, the entire community is focused around clay production. Thus tradition and skills are passed on generation to generation. Many styles coexist. These individuals have formed a cooperative which has led to construction of, Mercado de Artesanias, an impressive craft marketing center in the village. Luis Garcia & Irene Blanco carry on the family tradition that was made famous by Luis's mother Theodora Blanco. It was Theodora's whimsical animal figures emerging from folklore departed from the typical work produced in the village. Here work received international attention and lead to a who new style of clay working which was adopted by many village craftsmen Angelica Vasquez and Dolores Porras, two of Blanco"s prodigies, have emerged as master clay artists in their own right parents potters age 10. As is customary, both Dolores and Angelica found their way into clay at an early age as their families produced traditional domestic ware Both have survived extreme poverty and appalling conditions. Their epic perseverance, spirit and talent have matured into unique individual styles. They have melded their rich culture roots with a sense of whimsy and raw talent to create work that has achieved international recognition and the flattery of been widely copied. It has only been in recent years that clay production propelled primary through tourism has been able to raise living standard any appreciable amount. In the case of the arts mentioned here all came of age in abject poverty. Most work is a family venture requiring extraordinarily effort. Most still live subsistence lives and no one has become affluent from the labor in clay. HELLENÝSTÝK DÖNEM ZÝNTER ASTARLI BERGAMA SERAMÝKLERÝ Yrd. Doç. Alp ÇAM, Lisans Öð. Didem AKDEMÝR Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, G.S.F, Seramik Bölümü Bergama, Ýzmir'in 100 km kuzeyinde, Bakýrçay Havzasýnda yer almaktadýr. In this way, not only I do state my origin-being Greek by birth and belief-but also that because this myth binds all of us, who deal with the art of Keramos, in a large family which has no nationality and frontiers, proves that such a humble material as clay can do what most of us can only dream: Unite people. The myth goes back to ancient Attica-Attica is still the name of the land where Athens is sited-when Keramos Atticos-son of God Dionysos and Ariadne, was nominated protector of the tile makers, the potters and the clay artists of the time. Whenever heavy clouds darkened the sky and raindrops started to fall, all of them begged him on their knees to protect their sensitive production which was drying under sun. And Keramos, always efficient, kept going everywhere, protecting and covering, until his name became synonymous to 'keramos'- the tile- and further on in time to the 'shelter', to the 'roof'. Protector of the guild of ' Kerameis'- ancestors of today's ceramists- he is the eternal and unique patron of all the clay workers in our country and the whole world, where the Greek word 'kerameiki' remains unchanged and the art flourishes. This primeval art, which has drawn a long line in the journey of man from the caves to our era, appears to us broad and many faced since it is not only an art in the strict sense of the profession, but a craft and a fine-art unified in one entity. Surfing in the different eras of what we call 'Ancient Greek ceramics' is quite a task. It would require time and knowledge that I do not possess. You see, admiring the Works of my ancestors has already been an unbearable weight, which, at a younger age, often made me wonder: -"What exactly am I doing"…. As time went by, an almost automatic, simple classification has put an order to the chaos. And this- I think can be useful to all of us, the lucky ones, who have a profession, which at the same time happens to be our hobby. A classification by color, shape and era for potters like myself, who can not remember, exact details and dates. At the prehistoric era color is present in Greek ceramics, only as accidental fire Marks from an unintentional reduction. During the early Neolitic age, 6000 B.C vessels found in different settlements of the Greek mainland, show this very case: pots clumsily made of a coarse Brown or beige colored clay, poorly fired, sometimes unfired, dried in the sun, or transformed by over firing. Bases and handles are absent. During the middle Neolitic era (5000 -4000 BC) the quality of the vessels improves dramatically. They become thinner, finer and better fired, in a variety of colors from almost black to white with many in between hews of beige and brown. They are decorated not only with impressed and engraved, but also with painted lines, fort he first time vertical and horizontal, which evolve to geometric designs and ornaments. They have - mostly - a reddish thick color on a light colored surface, which usually follows the shape of the vessel. Sometimes they are scratched (sgraffito) fired in reduction with a characteristic grayish color with darker decorations. The shapes of these items become popular and are produced in many parts of Greece, Sesklo being the most well known. Color is different clay, a slip applied by a brush made of animal's hair, by a pointed stick or by fingers. In certain areas vessels with shiny surface appear which reveal the evolution of the craft. The finding of the late Neolithic period (mid 5000 to the end of 4000 BC) show a great diversity. On the one hand coarse vessels of a dark color (settlements Tsagli and Arapi) with lifeless and dull mat decorations and on the other hand the blooming ceramics of Dimini, where unique technique, style and diversity of colors compete in imagination and perfection. The first use of the meander and the spire together with the engraved designs filled with white paste are characteristic of this episode in the long history of clay. The civilization of Dimini did not expand to other areas of Greece. In the Islands of the Cyclades (3000-1900 BC), evolution follows that of the mainland. Similar techniques, impressed, engraved, painted. The designs evolve from the grotesque to the most refined, sometimes though on different types of objects or vessels. At this stage we have to point out the appearance of animal-like and anthropoid vessels and the appearance of the potter's Wheel that enables him to obtain new means of expression. In Minoan Crete, ( 2500-1100 BC.) the evolution of technical means such as the potters Wheel and new types of kilns, enabled the potters-once more- to reach perfection. Well made eggshell ceramics appear, fired in the right way, with multi colored floral or animal decorations, on a black shiny surface (Kamaraiki Kerameiki, Anaktorikos Rythmos) Some of them have protruding elements, either light colored on a dark surface or the other way round bring Minoan ceramics to the top. In Mycenae,(1600-1100 BC) ceramics is at first, related to the late ceramic period of the mainland. But very soon, especially in the area around the Kingdom of Argos pottery is influenced by Minoan ceramics which to some extent had an influence all over Greece. Later, simplicity and stylistic symmetry cause the restriction of liberal decoration to plain decorative zones. Fort he first time, we find drawings of humans, mostly in battle. Geometric period (1000-700 BC) is the border between the true Greek art and all the prehistoric forms of art in the mainland and islands. The general spirit of simplicity and order is a fact. The Doric ideals and influences coincide with the descent of the last Greek tribe of Dories, and art-once more-follows a new path. Dark -on light colored, even white surfaces, decorations drawn with calipers and rulers by craftsmen and artists who seek the ideal, create an unsurpassable style, which applies on the everyday use vessels and the monumental funerary urns as well. Humans and animals are depicted in zones in more and more complex combinations which by repetition keep the general Geometric idea During the 7 th century B.C the eastern style appears, a style influenced by eastern prototypes. The art of Ionia, and Efxeinos Pontos- the ancient Greek were exorcising the Black Sea calling it Efxeinos, meaning kind to strangers- with the characteristic frivolous, rich decoration of the eastern coasts becomes familiar to the mainland because of the travelers and merchants who move within the Mediterranean and Middle East coast for reasons of "Commerce and Theory" according to Herodotus. Imaginary paintings of animal and stylistic ornaments like the " rodax" the trademark of that time, narrate the relations between Greece and East. Forms with rich curves with decorations based on the principles of the Melanomorphe or Black technique-black paintings on a yellow or light red surface-starts the journey from the Greek colony of Militos and applies to some of the Cyclades Islands, to Crete, Rhodes and Samos and of course Cyprus where we find unique pieces of ceramics of different periods. The whole era is considered an interval in between the evolution of Greek art which by no means had a real influence on it. And we come to7 th century B.C, when the leadership of Ceramic art passes from Corinthos to Athens where black ceramic art meets the most eminent era of the Greek ceramic legend. The period from the 7 th to 4 th century -when painting on ceramic surfaces starts to decline rapidly, can be undoubtedly considered the golden era of Ceramic art. The secret of the black shiny color of the Greek vessels has been a riddle which for years on end ceramists and chemist tried to solve. Substances like urine, vinegar and potash were the main suspects and had top priority in their research. However the results were poor and unsuccessful. Today we know that it was a kind of colloidal slip, made simply from very fine and pure red clay (the clay of Attica contains eight to ten % red iron oxide) fired in a very special way. Vessels were decorated with a thin slip for the background and a thick one for designs, fired to about 940-960 degrees on the Celsius scale, in an oxidizing atmosphere, giving a bright red for the thin application, and a darker one for the thick slip. The second stage was in a reducing atmosphere, which was created by the insertion of fresh leaves and branches in the kiln. By this reduction the iron oxide is transformed to Magnetite which is trapped in vitrified surface. In this way, two shades of black could be created in connection to the thickness of the application. On a third stage, the insertion of dry wood in the kiln, caused a re-oxidation, and depending on the skill of potter who fired the kiln, re-oxidation stopped when the first thin layer of paint had come back to its original red color, while the thick one remained black. Around 530 BC the red decoration almost monopolizes any ceramic surface. The epitome of ceramic perfection has been reached, at least as far as Greek art is concerned. The creation of the white funerary Likithos- my favorite ones - are my humble opinion- "la creme de la creme" of anything I have seen as far as now. Hews of violet color appear on them, probably due to manganese oxide. I can speak for about ceramics, but I think patience is a virtue that one expects of himself and not from the others who sit in front of him wondering how long will take that speech in order to finish. Yet, I want to mention two more things.. First of all, I would like to address a post- mortem praise to all the potters of the far past in recognition, of the social discrimination they suffered after having offered so much to the art of clay. It is known that the guild of the potters was considered to be third class citizens, members of a lower caste separated by specialty to three more castes: the one who fired the kilns belonging to the lower one, the throwers to middle, the Painters to the top. And second when I speak of ceramics, I do not only refer to vessels. Idols and statuettes, play an important role in what we call ceramic. With the beginning of the Roman period the decline of art is rapid and irreversible, So we arrive to the years of the Byzantine Empire and the ceramics of this era, which are completely different, influenced from the eastern ceramic tradition. White slip over red bodies, transparent lead glazes with iron, copper and manganese oxides producing yellow, green and brown colors, sgraffito techniques permitting the red clay to show underneath the glaze. Decorative designs, which vary through the time, some of them real masterpieces. Which after the fall of the Byzantine Empire give their place to the Ottoman art and its own characteristic ceramics . ABAUT MY MODEST EXPERIENCES WITH HIGH-FIRE TERRA SIGILLATA AND METALLIC SALTS RINA KIMCHE, Israel The materials in use: 1. White terra sigillata as base cover coat. 2. Iron Sulfate 3. Iron Chloride. 4. Cobalt Chloride 5. Cupper Sulfate 6. Potassium Bi-Chromate After I burnish my surface in the leather hard state I dry the piece to bone-dry. When dry I put the white terra sigillata white coat then I rub it with a soft fabric or soft plastic. White Terra Sigillata: 2,500 kg Ball clay 5.000 cc Water. (Rain water is best) 2,5 gr Calgon, dissolved in warm water. 125gr Frit I use the white Terra Sigillata, as mentioned before, I score or engrave a desired texture or some design into the TS coating, than I fire the piece to 1230c. After this firing the white Terra Sigillata turns Off White (Yellowish). Into the engraved texture or design, a white or colored porcelain slip is inlayed and the whole piece is fired again to 1000c. The result is a two colors or more beautiful design. You need to experiment.
