s the heat increases, the
amount of water needed for
our garden plants also needs
to increase. We must pay attention
to details in order to properly water our plants for them to survive
the summer months. The most
important thing to keep in mind
is; while increasing the amount of
water we must make sure that we
are not drowning the plants, but
give them just the right amount.
To assist our plants, make sure you
find a breezy area for all your balcony plants that prefer shade and
cool air. If you can’t move them,
create shade for at least %30-%40
of each plant.
You must always remember to water plants that are in pots during
the hot summer months. If you
have any plants that haven’t been
watered for a long time and have
dried up, immediately move them
to a shady area.

rtan sıcaklar ile birlikte bahçedeki bitkilerimizin de su
ihtiyacı arttı. Yaz aylarında
bitkilerin sulamasına çok dikkat
etmemiz gerekiyor. Burada dikkat
etmemiz gereken en önemli noktalardan biri; bitkilerin su ihtiyacı
fazla, fakat onları aşırı su ile boğmadan yeterli miktarda sulamaya
özen göstermeliyiz.
Gölgeden hoşlanan balkon bitkilerinizi vakit kaybetmeden gölge
ve serin yerlere taşımalı, taşımanın mümkün olmadığı durumlarda %30-%40 gölgeleme malzemesi
kullanarak onları gölgelemeliyiz.
Özellikle balkonlarda saksılarda
yetiştirilen çiçeklerin saksıları
aşırı güneş ışınlarından korunmalıdır.
Bu sıcak aylarda özellikle saksı çiçeklerinin sulanmasına özen gösterilmelidir. Eğer susuz bırakılan
ve toprağı kuruyan çiçeğiniz var
ise, hemen gölge olan bir ortama
alın, saksınızdan daha büyük bir
kaba su doldurun, saksıyı batırın
ve hava kabarcıkları bitene kadar
suda tutun. Bu şekilde sulama yapılmayıp, saksınıza normal şekilde
sulama yapılırsa, verilen su saksının dibinden çıkıp gidecektir.
Yeterince sulama yaptığınızı düşünürken çiçeğinizin köklerine su
ulaşmadığı için zaman içerisinde
onu kaybetmenize neden olacaktır.
Sıcak aylarda çiçekler sabah ve
akşam üzeri sıcakların azaldığı saatlerde üzerlerine su gitmeyecek
şekilde yeterince sulanmalıdır.

Ensure you water your plants either early in the morning or in
the evening when the weather is
cooler to stop the plants burning.
Make sure none of your flowers
are dry and if there are any, water
them as explained above.
When dealing with grass, during
the months of June and July, allow it to grow a bit longer. You
must keep an eye out for harmful
insects, fungal diseases and mildew. During August, try not to
trim your grass too short, the only
time that short trimming would
be appropriate is towards the end
of September. Always remember
to water and take precautions
against insects during the August
heat.
Regularly water all fruit trees and
if there are any branches that have
died, cut the branch off so the tree
can continue to live.
Just because it’s hot, don’t give
up on the plants with the thought
that “nothing will grow in this
weather”. During the July – August period Vinca, flowers known
as Rustem Pasha Flowers, Silk
Carnations, Purslane (Portulaca),
and Paper flowers are all types of
beautiful plants that can grow in
intense heat. These plants will
bring life to your gardens until the
end of November.

Sıcaklar geldi, “bahçeye çiçek
ekilmez” veya “bu sıcaklarda
hiçbir şey olmaz” demeyin. Temmuz-Ağustos ayı içerisinde Vinka,
Rüstem Paşa , İpek Karanfili, Semizotu Çiçeği(Portulaca), Kağıt
Çiçeği ekmeye devam edebilirsiniz. Bu çiçekler Kasım ayı sonlarına kadar bahçelerinizi şenlendirecektir.

O
rchids vary in many different
types; some originate from tropical areas and are known as epiphytic plants (epiphytic plants grow
on top of other plants. They do not
damage them and they do not root
themselves, they only get minerals
from the rain and the plant they are
growing on). Some grow on mountain soil. There are over 35 thousand
types of orchids and with over 100
thousand hybrids, orchids are the
largest plant – family.
The most popular type of orchid is
the Phalaenopsis. Phalaenopsis was
disovered by the Dutch - German
botanist Karl Ludwig Blume. The
named derives from a butterfly Karl
believed it looked like a butterfly
named Phalaena which also looked
like an opsis. This type of orchid is
the most common type, the main
reason for this is that they are very
beautiful and do not require much to
grow.
Their natural habitat is Eastern Asia
in the tropical forests in the west of
Philippines and Sri Lanka. These
forests are sometimes very hot and
sometime cold, therefore these
weather conditions made these
plants strong enough to survive in
many households. They bloom twice
in one year and the flowers last from
2 to 4 months.
After Poinsettias, it is the second
most sold type of flower. As soon
as the strong red colour fades on
Poinsettias, they are thrown away
and replaced with new ones, this is
why they are sold more than orchids.
Orchids live for long periods of time,
that is why once bought, an orchid
can live for years in a household.

Doğal yaşam bölgesi Asya’nın doğusu, Filipinler ve Srilanka’nın batısında bulunan tropikal ormanlardır. Bulunduğu bölgelerdeki yaşam
koşulları nedeniyle zaman zaman
kuraklığa, bazen soğuğa yada yüksek neme maruz kaldıklarından ev
ortamına kolayca adapte olmuşlardır.
Yılda iki kez çiçeklenirler. Çiçekleri
2 ile 4 ay arasında solmadan kalabilir.
Atatürk çiçeğinden sonra en çok
satılan çiçektir. Atatürk çiçeği yapraklarındaki kırmızı rengi gittikten
sonra genellikle atıldığı için sürekli
yenileriyle değiştiriliyor olması satış
rakamını artırmaktadır. Orkideler
çok yıllık bitkilerdir. Bir kez alındıktan sonra uzun yıllar evlerimizde
kalırlar.

The popularity of orchids continue to increase
as it still is one of the most elegant type of plant.
They can be seen in marriage proposals, as
buquettes at weddings, or sometimes they are
just there to give a message hard to put in to
words. Orchids are not only known for their
beauty as plants, but they are also used as an
ingredient in icecream and in the hot beverage
“salep”. So they remain a part of our lives for
both summer and winter. The now world known
Maraş icecream owes its fame to the powder derived from orchids.
